Had the phone about 3-4 days now and so far been very please. Its a sim free UK phone and has been updated to latest official software as far as I'm aware.
My only concern is that the phone seems to get overly warm in most situations. I don't mean when gaming etc as I don't really play games but just general use. The back and sides seem overly hot to me.
I was under the impression this phone had the later 810 processor and had been throttled to stop exactly this problem?
Anything else that could cause this? Do I have a faulty phone or do others get warm?
I've also noticed an issue with signal strength and reception in that the phone seems to often jump from 5 to 0 bars.
Any help would be appreciated as I'm wondering if to exchange it or return for different model.
Thanks
Really just me?
Poor phone signal in area? Could be causing phone to warm up a bit more than usual, that or you have something else hogging down cpu in your phone.
The Qualcomm 810 still generate a lot of heat when the big cores goes online, v2.1 only slightly less aggressive. Same goes for my gf Xperia Z5 Compact using same cpu.
Thanks for the reply.
I've noticed it when using the phone while on network or WiFi. I mean it can be noticed after 10mins or so of Facebook, video playing (YouTube) or web browsing.
Also while using maps and having the phone on charge while driving really heats it up which I guess would be normal?
Have to have it on charge when on maps as it seems to drop 1% every minute
Charging while navigating will really make your phone almost glow from the heat, perfectly normal for this SoC, especially if you also have your screen brightness turned up to max.

when i listen music for about 30 mins + and running some programs such as adobe reader or opera, i can feel a warm in my hands from the battery. actually its more like to be said a relatively high heat felt by my hands !?
is this high battery heat normal? i mean for an everyday usage.
tnx in advance
Note: i did search but didnt find anything about LEO battery heating.
The battery can sometimes get quite warm, but it should never be hot. If it heats up to much you should probably get it looked at.
The battery in the HD was a lot worse than this. I think there may have been some issues, but HTC have worked on it. Thankfully, I don't know of any HTC phones exploding anywhere yet! lol
mine gets hot as well some times especially when I use igo in my car and charge the phone at the same time but also when playing a game etc.. but I read in the manual that this is normal... although I believe heat to an extent that can burn your hand its not normal.... mine never got that hold
just my 2 cents

Hello,
If you are using something like Opera, coupled with a number of applications that are cpu intensive, then you are going to get high battery drain which equals high heat output. Some of the heat will be coming off the cpu as well but the end result is the same.
The problem is worse if you are using wifi and/or gprs and you are in a low signal area, which means that the device and the battery need to work even harder to serve your needs.
If this happens again then check your location relative to wifi and gprs and/or reduce the number of intensive applications you have running at the same time.
If this fails then you may have a fault; however I think one or all of the factors mentioned above are linked to your issue.

ok tnx for replay guys...i accept this as normal situation, and yes i definety like to use igo8...and really its soo nice to have pda such LEO that can easily open and run several such programs!
thought I'd already seen this discussed on here somewhere but can't find it now when searching.. I've been having problems today with my phone getting quite hot around the top of the screen.. I took the battery cover off and it was noticably hotter just to left of the second mic (as viewed from the back)..
anyone else have this, and do you know what components are in that part of the phone?

I have this issue when i play games etc Don't know the reason though
I had mentioned this before...but most people replied here saying that it was normal....mine goes upto 38-40C while playing games...
It's probally the cpu that is there. All the phones are heating and that the arc is slim you feel it really quick. Nexus is heating when using GPS navigation.
But i agree the arc is heating really quick.
smart phone are ****ing laptops these days, does your laptop feel hot when you play game?
my phone was fine until today.. and it's only hot in that specific area.. not playing games though.. just surfing, facebook, xda..

Mine does the same, happened since day one, it wont be anything to worry about (I dont think)
If your worried about it overheating you could return it to where you got it from or even install setcpu and underclock it a tad.
same here, especially when surfing net
in my workplace where signal is not that good, that particular back area of the phone is hotter than when i'm at home. i'm guessing the 3g chip is in that area of the phone, not really sure though
This happened to me it is extremely hot when playing games and abit hot when charging I rang my network and they said they have never heard that it overheats so they replacing my new phone in the morning hopefully they come

If you are surfing internet, many flash ads may result in over usage of CPU and making your phone hot. Bad programing with flash which happens when companies hire cheaper developers...
Mine gets warm fast too... during navigation, game or downloading apps with 3G.
The processor area needs to dissipate heat to the outside surface and maybe since it is thin and plastic, we feel the heat easily.
Arc is a Hottie and hence it feels hot LOL.
I too experienced this, specially when charging and playing games. X10 gets hot in the battery area and this gets hot in a different area.
Well just received my phone lets see if anythings wrong with this 1

Good day everyone. I have a problem with my evo 4g. I'll try to keep my post detailed as much as possible, tho I'm a newbie.
anyway, I got this evo 4g 2ndhand. since it's cdma it's priced here in Asia way cheaper than the phones with sim slots. I noticed the battery life is somewhat short, and the phone was warming up. I don't know if this should be labeled as "warming" or "heating", or this might be normal, since these phones host 1ghz processors, not to mention a gpu without heatsinks.
I tried turning on airplane mode to disconnect all connections. since I have read in an article that I should avoid task killers, I didn't install such. I notice that whenever I am playing simple games, like doodle dash, after a while, the phone begins to become a little warm. also when playing videos 1% will be immediately decreased from the battery.
I would like to know if the heating or warming up is normal for an android phone, (since I have come from playing the psp and the nintendo ds, and as far as I could recall I haven't encountered warming issues such as this, but then those devices have thicker casings and have less components running them) I haven't encountered the blinking green orange lights yet, but afaik that'll only show up when it's charging. Also i've tried some battery temperature sensing apps the other day, but something must be wrong since it's been reading the temp, stuck at 29C. I'll try to install another one, and I'll update the results.
What would be the solution to my problem? any other settings here that should be tweaked? i tried factory resets, reformatting the sd. my android version is 2.3.3.
Thanks xda-developers.
Could be in my opinion your charging port that's making your phone warm up than usual. To know for a fact is when its starts boot looping numerous times. This has happen to me once before. Can u give us phone details? Hboot, version stuff like that would be helpful.

It's normal for the Evo to get warm and even a bit hot when used heavily. Playing graphics-intensive games will definitely get your phone warm. Basically it's nothing to worry about. If the phone gets too hot it will automatically shut itself down.
Hello everyone,
My new brand S5 overheats sometimes. I do nothing special when it overheats. No games, no heavy force on CPU. Even sometimes when it is just on my desk and I pick it up, I feel overheating.
When it overheats, I take battery out for around 5 minutes and then it will be ok for a while. Please help.
I was about to post the same.
My s5 seems to overheat even when not doing some very intensive ( like camera or gamming). Just today, after just using it to visit some webpages, it started to get hot on both the back and the screen.Does anyone else have the same problem of overheating with simple tasks?
I had the same issue with the s3 and i didn't want my next phone to heat up as much as the s3 did
There are a number of existing threads that have discussed this at length. You might want to do a search so that you can read the valuable information in those threads.
In short though, what makes you think your phone is overheating? You didn't give us any information about actual temperatures, app errors (if any) or.. well no information about anything. Give us some more details and we could give you better answers. Most often people have a vague impression that their phone is overheating when it isn't at all. Since we have no information, we dont' know if your phone is or isn't.
.
Thank you for the reply!
Well, it seems to just get too hot from what it seems to be considerable acceptable. I thought it heated up to much and so did some people that used my phone.
I was out today when i noticed it just by browsing the web (not on wifi, just on data and without any app errors), so i didn't get any temperature info but i do have a ir thermometer at home that i will use to get some info on the actual temperature. The rise on the temperature (again, don't know exact values but i will get back on those) was a bit uncomfortable, especially when using the screen that got a bit to hot as well.
Maybe i was expecting the phone to heat less than it does, so maybe its just the way the hardware works since it seems to be reports of excessive heat from phones like the z2 and the m8. Still, i will try get the temperatures when the phone starts to heat up to the same point i have experienced this past days and reply back here to see if its normal.

FWIW, mine tends to get overly hot also. Whether its just the fact that the screen has been on for a good long while texting or web browsing or other mundane tasks. My 2 previous phones, Sprint S3 and Evo 4G (og version) never seemed to get so warm doing so little. Sure its a larger screen than the S3 and more processor horsepower, but its the same screen technology and similar cpu architecture. Doesnt make much sense to me either. And all 3 phones have been in the platinum series cases from best but, similar ventilation and always worn in the hip-clip
You can't have a powerful phone that doesn't produce some heat. And phones of course are too small to have active cooling systems. If you had done a search you'd find that some heat is normal. You're assuming that the phone is overheating when there is no basis for that. You just didn't expect to notice any obvious heat.
You don't need a thermometer, you can install an app e.g. an Xposed module to report the processor temperature. Idle temperatures of ~ 35C are normal. Light load, perhaps 45C, heavy load ~ 65C. And if you are doing something processor intensive e.g. transcoding or some games and have a bulky case that causes your phone to run hot, you might see temperatures approach 80C. There is no (public) published TDP figure for the Snapdragon 800 series, but it's believed to be about 5 W. So these temperatures should not surprise anyone.
Auto shutdown i.e. what the manufacturer considers overheating is I believe 100C. Advances in semiconductor lithography do produce devices that radiate less heat in general but these temperatures are not out of line with other processors e.g. I have measured desktop CPUs that routinely operate as high as 90C.

I get like 40 -50 on light usage (browsing, checking mail).. and 60 - 65 on moderate use... and 70 - 75 on heavy use and on bootup.. so it's within the range? but the problem is .. it is not comfortable using such a hot touchscreen... after long use.. my fingers kind of hurt cuz it's too hot... My old htc desire never had this prob.. I am a bit pissed off that a device 2x the price of my old htc desire is that hot and uncomfortable to use...
---------- Post added at 07:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:07 PM ----------
and another problem is that while the cpu cools down if i let it rest, the touchscreen takes a very long time to cool off... needs at least 10mins so that it's normal...

Hei! I think your s5 is dead for a long time. But I have one with the same issue. Do you remember if you fix it somehow?!
I've been using chrome for a long time, but have noticed that occasionally while reading and article the phone will get noticably warm and take a big hit on battery life in a short amount of time. I downloaded the Firefox preview and haven't noticed the phone warming up while using it.
Has anyone else had the same issue?
That's somewhat expected imo. Chrome is a very demanding application on any platform, it's extremely RAM hungry which then = lower battery performance and excess heat.
The other thing is that this is now my 3rd Pixel phone for the 3rd year in a row and this Pixel 4 specifically really runs hot. Mine gets warm-hot with almost anything over very light use. Any social media, moderate web browsing, game or slightly demanding app and my phone gets noticeably warm. I think you're absolutely fine and have nothing to worry about.

And how's that normal?
My pixel 4 gets randomly warm (and that's typically happening when something is going wrong in background.. i still have to understand Android :/), it should stay cool to touch when using lightly!
OP, is Android System or Android OS or Google Play Services or Google app on top of battery usage? In general mines gets warm / hot when this happens. Once i had to clear Google cache + a restart to fix the problem. I hate this intermittent never ending Android battery issues..

Not usually. This issue (phone warm and fast battery drain) seems specific to chrome. It is sporadic and will go days without happening, but battery usage shows high drain from Chrome when it happens.
Do you still have the problem?
I was roaming and was connected via WiFi to dual band router that used same SSID for both bands (2.4ghz and 5ghz). While using the phone, no matter what I did, it was noticeable warm. Heck, even warmer than using it on LTE!
The band fluctuations were there, sometimes i saw i were on 2.4ghz, sometimes on 5ghz.
Now i am home via WiFi and phone remains cool, for basic tasks (Twitter, chrome, Instagram, etc). I am using 2 different SSID for each band, and i am connected to 2.4ghz band.
Wish Google let us force a band..
It's still an issue. It happens on both WiFi and LTE. It's not a constant issue, sometimes it's fine and sometimes it runs warm.

It may be some sites you're browsing consumes more resources (eg: JavaScript can put the CPU on work) or are full of ads?

That's entirely possible. My web browsing when it happens isn't very consistent. It's usually when I'm reading some article linked from Facebook.
