Does Moto Z Have Miracast? - Moto Z Force Questions & Answers

Wireless Display Casting (Miracast) is not working on my new Moto Z Force. I have tried it with two different displays and both are not showing up under the nearby devices. The devices show up under WiFi Direct settings but it will not allow me to connect and display there. Worked fine on my Droid Turbo 2 but no luck with the Z. Was this feature removed?

Same here. Hoping it's a bug, but even if it is, we'll be waiting til 2017 for a fix.

According to Moto_Tom on the Moto Z forums, Miracast does not work with the Moto Z.

Sorry to drag up an old topic, but has there been any solution to this?
Coming from a Note 4 I used screen mirroring all the time for Kodi and now I'm stuck!
Is there another app that can share my screen to my Roku stick?
Thanks

I've tried many apps to get things like showbox to cast to Chromecast and I've found that LocalCast works best for me. I've been using it for the past 2 years and since has been very well updated. Here's the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.stefanpledl.localcast

What are good small devices to use for the Trusted Devices feature?

I like the idea of Trusted Devices but I'd like to pair it with something that's always on me so I almost literally never have to enter my PIN. The best would be something that's nearly as slim as a credit card that could go in my wallet or a very small nub that could go on my keyring. I've searched around but nothing seems perfect. Any ideas for this?
This is what you want, but it's not quite here yet.

Seems rather impractical, as you'd always have to be connected to the bluetooth device, so it would need to be charged, and your phone would be using more battery/staying awake whenever it is connected.
This is exactly what the Moto Skip is for, but it's not a trusted device in the sense that it stays on all the time and you don't have to do anything to unlock.
There are two types of Skip devices, though. One is more "active" and will wake and unlock the device. This is the "nicer" option, and it uses a magnet to clip onto your shirt, pants pocket, etc. The other option is the more "passive" Skip, which are the Skip Dots that come with the Moto Skip. They are stickers that do the same thing as the Skip, but you have to wake the device and then touch them. If you have the device sitting on a Skip Dot on your desk, in your car, etc. and press the power button, then pick it up, it will be unlocked. With the Moto Skip proper, you just touch it and the phone will vibrate and unlock.
I bought a Moto Skip when I got my Moto X because it was half off, but I've never really used it. I have a 30 minute lock delay on my PIN, and check my phone pretty often, so it doesn't really ask for a password that much. I also use Bluetooth trusted devices in my car, with the GM in car phone connection.
Depending on where you spend the bulk of your time, look into Tasker and Secure Settings change PIN/password settings based on WIFI connections (home/work WIFI might be your "safe zone"), and lock it up when you're not connected to those.
Just my thoughts.

I bet it works only on BT 4.0+ since it can't have a large battery (probably a CR2032 or similar disk). I know that some BT 4.0 devices have 1-2 years of life between charges, but don't have much range or capability.
You didn't reference your "Old" Moto, but it will work with the X.

For my purpose (and I believe the OP's) - having something on you that is a trusted device - a range of 6 feet and the capability to pair with another device are all that's required.

I've been waiting for something like this as well, but so far, nothing has popped up yet. Android central and the following posts are good. Was hoping the Chipolo would work but it seems to have lots of issues. Maybe the Gecko tag will work it is released.

The trusted device feature works wonderfully with both the Pebble and the Galaxy Gear watches. Conversely, I've had nothing but trouble with the Stick-n-finds. They refuse to pair for me.

Cast Moto X Screen to Chromecast

Cast Moto X screen to Chromecast!
Change build.prop line ro.product.device to hammerhead then save and reboot.
Easy!
I posted here in Android Development because those with unrooted phones can't do this...plus, it's just a downright cool tweak.

As mentioned prior, I was able to hack my build.prop, to convince Chromecast that my phone is a Nexus 5... After a reboot, the CastScreen option populated and just started working.
Initial thoughts... While it is still in beta, I figured with all the hype casting would be pretty polished by now.
Not so much.
The Chromecast struggles to produce video, and seems to heavily compress (or take a long time) to render anything. Photos do fairly well, but streaming video from phone to TV is totally useless.. I also recognized early on that the Chromecast doesn't seem to support 5g wireless, which would likely help a great deal with throughput.
I have seen a few YouTube videos showing better casting results, but using true Nexus gear. To be fair, there's a chance the Moto X isn't officially supported yet because Google may want to push all of this heavy lifting through our GPU.
Oh well, always fun trying new things.

One last thing...I encourage others to post their experiences here

I discovered this build.prop edit on my own yesterday and tested it out. I noticed the heavy compression at first but things smooth out after a few moments. Quality seemed to be fairly good from what I could see. I'm I've got an 802.11ac router really close to my tv that my phone was connected to on 5ghz (though my chromecast was connected on 2.4ghz n). So maybe that had something to do with it. Playing sonic dash showed smooth clean graphics, but the latency was just a tad too slow to rely on the TV as a screen and the phone as a controller.
Watching MLB.TV quality definitely suffered a little and wasn't quite as smooth. Perhaps that was because I was streaming so there was data going back and forth to the router.
Also, note there is another post on XDA with an app someone threw together to enable mirroring on any device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/har...experimental-enable-mirroring-device-t2812193
I would guess this performance will be on par with casting a tab from Chrome on your PC. I know that experience sucks.

I do this wired from a desktop and it works extremely well - video, audio, whatever. I haven't tried the phone yet... but I'd check your network.

Wired I don't have as much of a problem but wireless I do. Then again there are many factors but all network related. Chromecast in relation to the router, wireless devices currently using the bandwidth on the router etc...
Since most people are not hardwired to their network I think its a valid post to talk about wireless tab casting especially since you will be casting with your phone wirelessly.
I'll try this on my moto x today. I'm casting to Chromecast from my nexus 7 and it works good. Not a lot of latency , buffering or anything. Quick and all, so I'll compare it with this hack on the moto x..

This works on my Moto X pretty well. Latency is higher than my girlfriends S4, but it still works.

This version is great for people who rooted with pie root on version 4.4.2 since you can't modify your build.prop.

cast screen workin in moto x2013 trick
first open hot spot from any other android mobile . after that connect moto x wifi with that hotspot mobile after that you will easily uese miracast in moto x 2013... screen mirroring
.
You don't need to do this anymore. The Chromecast app now supports mirroring from any device via a button in the app.

Screen mirroring with Chromecast.

Seems that they finally got screen casting to completely work in the recent CM updates. Including a photo I took of my TV casting my screen. Sadly this is only able to just show that the camera is on making the TV endlessly repeat but it shows that it is working. I was able to play games and watch videos and the sound even went to the TV as well. If I hook up my wireless mouse with my otg cable and connect my Bluetooth keyboard I'll be set with the biggest screen I've ever seen android on.

Its only going to get better too. There's already so many more apps that work with it than there were a few months ago when I bought it. Screen mirroring was something people only talked about and wished could happen back then. You needed to have a miracast to screen mirror but even then it doesn't work like it doesn't on the Chromecast, im only noticing a latency of a fraction of a second. Enough to make playing games through your TV a little tricky but still doable.
very suprised dualshock 4 controllers work natively with otg cable... very nice combined with mirroring

This has worked wonders for me in my new car.
Now, I no longer need the MHL adapter and huge bulky HDMI cable to hook up to my stock in dash car radio screen.
Just the HDMI to RCA converter and the Chromecast. Works great!!!!!!! and takes up less space.

If I recall right, DS4 compatibility was within the Linux kernel, and was improved somewhat recently. But in any case, it is pretty nice that it works
I've been screen mirroring for a couple months now with a rooted Chromecast.

I'm just curious as to if the Moto z force supports mhl or slimport. I see that slimport is coming out with a USB c to HDMI this month.

My best guess is that it uses slimport. But I don't know for sure. I'd like to use my chrome cast but the point for me to use the adaptor is because I'm going to be moving it around alot to different places. So having to set up the Chromecast each time would get annoying for me.

Im curious as to mhl as well but before I bought multiple Chromecasts I was moving it from place to place...to alleviate the headache of retyping passwords I texted them to myself for easy copy and paste, just a friendly suggestion if mhl doesnt pan out

I tried the Chromecast and it won't work for what I need. I tried it with an n64 emulator and there was about a second delay between what happened on my screen and what happened on my TV. So I'm going to have to try an mhl and or a slimport.

How far are you from the router? Maybe upgrade or check your settings, I used it for FPse with an 8Bitdo Nes 30 Pro and had zero lag, that is why I recommended it.

Pixel 4 support mhl ?

Anyone know if the pixel 4 will support mhl cable please

Google want you to use the Chromecast. I am not holding my breath for it.
That's the problem.. without WiFi my chromecast ultra is next to bloody useless unless I turn my Mrs phone into a wireless hotspot...
Been there done that and 15gb of mobile data gone watching latest series of stranger things and a film...
It would make sense if Google would make the chromecast work with the pixels without having a WiFi connection because they don't support mhl cables.
Connect via Bluetooth etc so people can still use the chromecast

And it' getting worse. Chromecast can't even handle Hotel Wifi with an extra verification step. So there is no way to stream to an SmartTV in an hotel since they removed miracast too.
I saw an USB C to HDMI adapter in an store and was about to buy it. Glad I googled if the pixel supports that...
The only solution is to buy an FireTV Stick.

You are quite correct D4rk_nVidia. Had exactly this issue whilst camping in France. WiFi in site but required extra verification login to use it. That rendered the optoma uhl55 projector wifi useless and the chromecast too.
The thing I don't understand tho is why using a second phone as a WiFi hotspot eats your mobile data like it does..
