Has anyone figured out how to update profile/PRL after rooting? Also, the ##MSLNUMBer# code doesn't work either. I've tried it with and without those 3 files need for root disabled/enabled and get the same result. If you hit update PRL under settings, I get initializing application and that's it. Not an issue now, but just curious for future reference.
Or does the "active this device" under settings perform those update? I can get that to work.
I am trying to figure this out too

You are likely in the magical combination I found too, if you download foxfi it should work without any issue, but in about a week it ****s the bed
Reactivate phone in settings and youll get the ability back OR ##SCRTN# for a total network reset including updates of prls and profile

Hey guys, two things.
1. How I fixed this issue was, first I installed titanium backup. Then I went to settings and activate device, wait until it says "writing to device"
then hit the home button, go into titanium, BACKUP FIRST!!!! the following applications: Samsung DM Phone Interface, Samsung DM Service, and SecurityLogAgent. Then uninstall them, and restart your phone. That fixed it for me.
2. I have had so many issues with the firmware flashed for this phone, and I can't find stock anywhere, does anybody have a copy of stock for me to download for the sprint s7 edge?
edit:Just found a copy of stock. Trying to flash now. Will update with results

The update is failing for me as well. Stock rooted with TWRP and Xposed. After starting the update, the phone goes into TWRP and starts running an update script, but fails.

Definitely agree. I'll stick on Paul until it's proven safe to upgrade to mm. I don't even care if it's a stock mm rom. As long as I keep my bootloader unlocked.

Western NC here, BTW.
Just downloaded and installed. All the icons are yucky now. My phone was fully stock so did not have the same concerns as some of you with regards to boot loader et all. Location is Boston. Seems ok so far other than the yucky icons.

I want to make sure we can still unlock the phone. We should be able to get a complete CM13 now if the bootloader can still obtain perm unlock and we have perm root.
I haven't seen any new phone released since our Note 4s that delivers every feature I want plus more, so I'm planning on sticking with our note 4s for some time to come.

Ok so I rooted 7 days ago from a clean install from odin and did all the trickster/interactive, force gpu etc to make it running smooth. But today I started experiencing apps like soundcloud crashing and giving me notifications it stopped, and then finally google play did it, now I just figured restarting the phone would normally fix it. But no, all it did was reboot, after the carrier sign it just vibrates and keeps vibrating and never boots up even after 15 minutes.
So I decided to just do a clean install and unroot again with my sammobile download. So I rooted AGAIN and shortly after, it started doing it.
Then I did a clean install again and rooted, now it's working fine for now. Anyone experience this? I have 20 days to return the phone, I got it from swappa
Sounds like to me that something in your rom became corrupt which isn't uncommon with rooted and modded roms. I might have wiped the caches before bombing it, typically it's a good practice to make regular complete backups of your phone incase of things like this so you can just flash your backup and keep it moving without starting over. Sorry to hear you had to start over!

That's the next thing I did, wiped the cache from the recovery. Still had the problem, what I didn't do was force stop google play and wiped the data and cache from the app. But then again, after I rebooted, there was no way of doing that since it would never get past the carrier screen. I would have to do it before rebooting (I didn't actually think this would put me in a bootloop). Redownloading a new firmware from sammobile as we speak just in case it happens again. I'm also gonna have to try and see if it works during stock

Same thing happened to me on the S7E. Had the phone powered off for a day while I used another phone. When I turned it back on I couldn't open Google Play at all and was getting other fcs as well. Rebooted and it just stayed at the AT&T logo. Did a factory reset but after going through the device setup again, SuperSU wasn't there, so no root.
It all made no sense. I did nothing different than I ever did before. It seemed completely random.

Some Substratum theme options weren't yet working. A few random force closes. Security Log agent messages from some apps. Lag in the notification shade when playing Spotify (so possibly any media). It's not like Oreo is a big upgrade, so I'm not in a rush to get it.

You don't need root for Substratum. The $1.99 add-on does work and is probably required.

You can, but only by using the built in "my files" app.. Also go to settings>apps then tap the dots in the top right and tap special access and look at the bottom of the list. Do you see install unknown apps?
I hope they fix the theming issues, half of the icons get the stupid white border/frame. even when you turn off icon frames its stays. its the biggest reason why I switched back. This Beta is really stale this year. I have it on my s8 to and I'm not really impressed

Yes, that is the build that this is for....
I have two Essential phones.
One is still in the box waiting for 'O'.
Is there a way to receive OTA updates BEFORE I activate the phone?
This seems preferred rather than activating, doing the updates, then doing a Factory Reset for a clean start.
Thanks!

Makes sense, you just want to get the update and set it up fresh. I do that too sometimes when I can. You don't need cell service to get OTAs, unless it is some weird device that is relying on that. My essential phone was without sim card when I got updates.
When I got my phone I did all my updates out the box over WiFi without a Sim installed so yes you can

Oreo "O" is not yet available as an OTA update on the phone as its still in Beta.
You can go directly to the essential website (https://www.essential.com/developer/beta-builds) and download and install the Oreo Beta following Essential's Instructions. This really doesnt require an active sim card as you are doing all of the fun stuff yourself but you may have to wait a while longer for Oreo OTA.
Unless O doesnt mean Oreo than disregard this post.
House do you set up ADB without activation?

Oreo "O" is not yet available as an OTA update on the phone as its still in Beta.
You can go directly to the essential website (https://www.essential.com/developer/beta-builds) and download and install the Oreo Beta following Essential's Instructions. This really doesnt require an active sim card as you are doing all of the fun stuff yourself but you may have to wait a while longer for Oreo OTA.
Unless O doesnt mean Oreo than disregard this post.

You should be able to turn on the device and set it up via WiFi without ever having a Sim card in it.

Turn on without a sim card, on first boot, skip all the setup, and go straight to developer settings, and enable USB debugging and (maybe, not sure if this is necessary if not rooting) Enable OEM Unlocking.

I've lost track of what thread this was and what we're trying to do.
To answer the original question, YES, you can do OTA without activating with cell provider, just don't install the SIM card on first boot. It's like setting up a wifi only tablet.
Basically, you don't need to unlock bootloader if you're not installing TWRP/zip flashing, etc. You don't need to enter recovery/fastboot either if you're just installing OTAs. Your phone just needs to be on, connected via wifi, and you can skip a majority of the set-up steps.
Just doing OTA updates, right? Since you're going to be doing a full-wipe, it shouldn't matter what you do during setup.

Why would you have to register with Google? If that was the case just putting in your email address during setup would do that.
As was said, it would be the same as setting up a WiFi tablet. You'd get whatever OTA updates are available.
If you bought a Sprint phone then you may not get an update as often as the unlocked phones would since the Sprint variant does have Sprint and Telus specific builds.
Thanks Everyone!
I'm sorry. If the question is can you ota over wifi on an unactivated phone, then the answer is yes.
If the question is can you sideload on a phone that is not set up. Then I'm not so sure.

Actually (I might be wrong) but I think phones Locked to Sprint (and maybe Telus?) rely on Sprint to push updates.

Telus/Koodo phones are not locked
