[Q] App stuck "Installing". How to cancel?

I made the mistake of trying to update a custom netflix APK to the latest Netflix out of the Amazon Appstore. Ever since, I've had an "Installing notification" and the app store lists the Netflix app as "Retrieving your app from the cloud."
I've rebooted, uninstalled the custom Netflix APK, reinstalled the custom APK, uninstalled again, and booted without network connectivity. I can't seem to cancel the installation.

I was unable to find a solution and Amazon's support couldn't help me, so I reformatted the device.
Warning to others: Don't ever click "upgrade" from the Amazon Appstore over a custom APK.

I had the same problem. Not sure how I got into the position but I had 3 apps downloading from the cloud forever.
Support could not come up with a solution so the only solution was to reset the device, I had to wait until the unit had 40% charge to do that. After I reset, it has worked fine since.
I did not try to upgrade anything yet when this happened. I think it might have had something to do with GetJar which I got before it showed the Kindle Fire as a supported device (just used another 2.3 droid device)

Zathbu is right. you're better off not trying to upgrade a sideloaded apk via the app store. one of the reasons being amazon stores its apps (meaning, the ones u get from their store) on the cloud, but sideloaded apks are stored on the device. and besides, i believe the apks from the amazon app store are treated differently. i have both android market and amazon app store on my phone and the apps i get from the app store are not "seen" by the market at all (even if they are present on both places)

I pretty much had the same problem. I had side loaded an APK of an App I had previous on my Droid phone, and then decided to download from the Amazon AppStore instead (better resolution of icon!). It even nicely said that I had an app installed that wasn't registered to my account, and would I like to overwrite it. Obviously, I said "Yes". The app just sat there installing forever, and no amount of reboots would fix it, or allow any subsequent app installs. Mistake....well temporarily.
The fix is this (if I remember correctly!):
1. Click on Settings (Cog)
2. Click on More (+)
3. Click on Applications
4. Ensure Drop Down says "All Applications"
5. Select Appstore
6. Select Clear Data (this won't affect your other installed apps)
7. Reboot
At that point, you should probably uninstall the offending side loaded APK file, using the same method above (Steps 1 thru 4). Instead of selecting Appstore, choose your app, then click Uninstall instead. Then install from the Appstore instead.

Glad someone found a GUI method of doing this. In case that doesn't work for some people, I also had luck clearing the contents of /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.venezia/cache/. You should be able to do that from an adb shell window, or a root-enabled file browser.
EDIT: After a quick brain fart, I realized that since that is technically on the "sdcard" partition of the OS, you should be able to remove those APKs from the cache with the Kindle tethered via the USB cable.

This is what I do, root not needed nor rebooting:
1) I use ES File Explorer to clear /sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.venezia/cache but any file manager should work.
2a) Use settings-> applications to clear the data and force stop Amazon appstore
2b) Or use any app manager or most app2sd apps to go to the detail page for the appstore and clear data and force stop. The app manager built into ES File Manager will work fine. I only list this as the second alternative since the other way uses the built-in settings vs. this requiring an app.
3) Go to the app section/tab on the launcher then select store to restart the appstore.

You can also install a task manager and kill the "AppStore" process. That worked for me.

I have had this issue for a very long time and could not find a lasting and solid solution. After researching the problem for a few weeks I found a solution that worked for me, finally.
The issue seems to have triggered when I used the Titanium Backup Pro Market tools to unlink and link apps to my market account and system apps were added by accident. This should work with any app that can link and unlink apps to and from the Market.
Here is the step-by-step solution for TB Pro:
1) Go to Market Tools -> Market Doctor and Unlink all User & System apps.
2) Reboot device.
3) Open any Root Explorer or Browser and locate and delete the file "market_assets.db" in "/data/data/com.android.vending/databases".
4) Reboot device.
5) Go to TB Pro and to Market Tools -> Market Doctor -> User Apps and link all the User Apps that you installed on your device from the Android Market. Make sure that no System App is linked.
6) Reboot device.
Then the apps you have linked to your account will appear again in Your Apps of the Market after a few minutes. If they do not then install a new free app or a free app that you had previously installed and uninstalled and your apps should appear soon.
In my case I had used all proposed solutions with no luck and this was the only solid solution. I used TB Pro and Root Browser Lite to do this. You could probably use MyBackup for free (30 days trial) to do the same process but if you had this issues chances are that you already have an app that can unlink and link apps from the market.

Edit 6 FEB 2012: This solution is temporary unfortunately. The cause of the problem is linking apps to the market that were not downloaded from the market or linking to the market from a backup that is quite old/corrupted. To sort this out there is an app now and you can find it from here:

It is called Market Fixer and it detects market links that are problematic and removes them to restore the My Apps functionality in the Market.

Cool thanks, I had already found that solution by myself and it works fine, but doesn't survive a hard reset, meaning everytime I flash a new rom with full wipe the problem comes back and I have to go through this again...
I tried to use another account with a full wipe and no problem, so my account must be screwed for life.

With 2 accounts setup at the same time, I can mysteriously buy apps !!!
If I delete the second account, bam, I can't buy anymore.
Looks like the simple presence of a "clean" account sorts things out for the corrupted one...

This hasn't occurred to me at any point. I can always purchase apps from the Market.

This is strange. Are you looking in the internal SD card? What rom are you running and which version of the Market you have installed?

I am using Root Explorer. From "/" i navigate to "/data/data/com.android.vending/".
At that folder is see these sub-folders:
app_carrier_billing
app_sslcache
app_uri_url_map
cache
lib
But there is no databases sub-folder.
I am using DarkyROM 10.4.2 and Market version is 3.4.4.

If it is ES Explorer you can't search file in root system with it.

You are missing the folders databases and shared_prefs then. What happens if you try to create an empty folder there called databases?
Alternatively you can search for the file "market_assets.db" to see where it is saved at. Root browser lite has both search and create new folder functions.

I use Root Explorer.
I created the "databases" folder under /data/data/com.android.vending/ and rebooted. Nothing happened. No files appeared inside databases. Then I "Force stop" and "Clear data" of Market app and reboot. After that databases folder disappears again.

This can only be explained by the fact that you are using a custom rom which is probably based on a previous stock rom than the one we have or it has been modified to affect that part of the market.
I also had an Android Market account corruption where apps I never purchased or never downloaded appeared in my apps when I logged into my account on the PC. Some of those apps would appear under my Apps in the Market for a long time. What I did was flash the latest rom XLA4 with Mobile Odin Pro (to not lose root), flash the CF root kernel to restore CWM functionality, wipe internal sd card/apps/data/factory reset/dalvik cache, install all the apps I wanted through the Android Market account on my PC and then follow the procedure I mention in my first post here. Now (today in fact) I checked my Android Market account online and all the "fake" apps are gone, the duplicates are gone and everything is in place. Also the Market on my phone is working great with no issues and all the apps I linked are there.

It seems to me that before this kind of application was not in the list of installed applications on the market or unable to uninstall.

System applications should not appear in your apps unless you updated an app like Youtube or Maps at some point, so that it will give you the option to uninstall it. You probably added them with TB Pro when you linked the apps to the market as part of the solution. I haven't added them in my case and added only the apps I have installed/bought from the market myself. Therefore, they are not in the Not Installed section.
Some apps indeed do not have the option to be uninstalled (even apps I have bought myself) but it is rare and you can still uninstall them using TB Pro.

Tried this just now on a Galaxy Nexus with ICS 4.0.2 stock rom. (Should this work on this phone too?)
Only thing I did different is I left a couple system apps (like maps etc..) checked during the restore market links in Titanium Backup...
Could this be the problem? Also after deleting the database file and rebooting, I spent about 10+ mins deselecting system and amazon apps from the restore market links, before actually running it. Did it repopulate the database before ran the fix links option and screw things up?
I tried also clearing market data to see if that would help but i did this after this fix did not work. It didn't help either.

I do not know if this fix will work with ICS. You can try it again only adding apps you actually purchased or installed free through the Market to see if that was the issue.

Thanks. I did try it again like you mention and still no luck. I did however do a complete wipe and reinstalled the stock rom. Initially the market was working, until I restored user apps with data with titanium backup, then immediately I was back to the same problem.
So like you said initially, its definitely related to Titanium Backup.

I followed your instructions carefully on my fully rooted OEM Rom Atrix 2, but it did not work for me the first time. However, I performed them again, only this time, for each and every one of the reboots (I rebooted using Quick Boot ver.4.1), on the way back up I booted back up into recovery, and wiped the cache. I am not sure how that could have made a difference, but it appears to have been necessary in my case. I have not installed a custom ROM yet (was waiting for bootloader unlocking, but it's not hopeful, so I'll be using some other method).

Well, it worked for a few days. Somehow, it broke again on it's own. I had not messed with any market links or anything. Didn't flash anything, and didn't even muddle with any system files. Just flat out, unprovoked, snafu for no apparent reason.

Version 4 provides more Samsung bloat removal, Google bloat removal, and as a bonus it can disable the power on sound.
Background
Samsung has a program running on most of its devices that pushes "Security Updates" onto the device. If you make the mistake of accepting this security update, even after you root your tablet, it will patch the hole and you will never be able to use towelroot or any other know exploit as of June 2014 to root your it again. So this must be immediately disabled after a successful rooting.
Your tablet is also equipped with Knox. One component of Knox is in the bootloader and checks the integrity of the recovery and kernel. If it sees anything has changed at that level it trips the knox flag immediately, which is irreversible. That component can almost never be touched. The second component runs when the OS is up and running and its main task is to monitor the activities of the apps in your system and shut them down if they act "suspiciously". When you are rooted and install SuperSU, this element of Knox keeps detecting the background root activities and shuts them down and gives you warnings. There is therefore a high level of risk there if you let root and knox exist concurrently. So after rooting, this second component of Knox should normally be disabled.
Finally, there are useless junk apps that most of us agree Samsung should have never shipped with the tablet, or even if they are useful we want them gone to get a better battery life.
I will call all of the above (updaters, Knox, and useles junk) bloatware. The scripts attached here can disable or enable the bloatware on your tablet, which comes in handy if you do not have Titanium Backup Pro to freeze or remove bloatware. And since someone will ask at some point, no, it won't trip your Knox!
Please read below and understand what this script disables before you use it. There may be an app on the list that you may actually want to keep.
Requirements:
Rooted Samsung Note Pro 12.2, SM-P905 international model.
Android Terminal Emulator: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en
The international version (P905) is tested with baseband P905XXUANA7, build P905XXUANC3 .
The ATT version (P907A) is tested with build KOT49H.P907AUCU1AND7 (thanks to @gerard0986 for testing the script)
Makes sure you download the version that is suitable for your tablet. It may work to varying extents for other models and firmwares.You try and tell me
If you are using models other than P905 or P907A, I can make a new script for you if you provide me with a "ls -R -l" dump of your /system, or even better, if you post your firmware somewhere online.

Generally speaking, you should always have a Nandroid backup before trying anything new. Also have a flashable ROM handy. I am not responsible if you brick your device while using these scripts.
To debloat:
1- Unzip the attachment and copy debloat.sh to your phone at /sdcard
2- Run the terminal emulator and type the following:
su
cd /sdcard
sh debloat.sh​3- Choose what you want to disable, or exit.
4- If you choose not to exit, the code does its thing and reboots your tablet. The bloat is gone now
To restore the bloatware:
1- Unzip the attachment and copy enbloat.sh to your phone at /sdcard
2- Run the terminal emulator and type the following:
su
cd /sdcard
sh enbloat.sh​3- The code will warn you:
Are you sure you want to restore the security/firmware/software updaters, and Knox?
They may immediately patch your system and make the existing root methods impossible to apply.
Then you can choose what to enable, or just exit.
4- If you choose not to exit, the code does its thing and reboots your tablet. The bloat is back now
Note that while running the debloat script you may get force-closing popups. This is normal; after all you are disabling these applications!
Limitations:
If you have previously removed bloat using other means this script CANNOT recover it for you. enbloat.sh can only restore what debloat.sh has disabled.
If you have debloated using an older version of this code and you want to try a newer version of it, first use enbloat from the older version to return everything to the original configuration and then use the newer version.
When you are restoring the bloat, it is best to enable "airplane mode" so that your tablet does not try to patch your system with a security update without your knowledge. You can disable the airplane mode after you debloat again.

1- What is your firmware version?
2- Open the terminal emulator and type the following commands in there:
su
cd /system
ls -R -l > /sdcard/sysdump.txt
Then pm the file sysdump.txt which is saved on your sdcard to me.

I think the only existing models are SM-P900, SM-P905, SM-P907A and SM-P905V. I don't know what T-900 is.
If you are referring to model P900 (wifi only) this code may partially work but a lot of files are different between the two models so the outcome is a partial debloat. If you want, you can make a system dump file as I suggested in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55029414&postcount=5 and send it to me so I can make a custom code for you.
Edit: It appears that T900 is the Tab pro model which is a different device. This thread is for Note pro 12.2 and since I do not own a Tab Pro I cannot answer this question. Perhaps help can be found in the XDA's Tab Pro forum at http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-pro-12-10-8. or try these scripts as they are and see if it works for you.

Hey najoor, Im hoping that you can help me debloat my galaxy tab pro 12.2 sm-t900. I just bought it today and am shocked at the amount of bloatware thats included lol.
Basically I want everything removing that I can install through googleplay, leave the default browser.

Yes, that is part of bloat removal. To get Google bloat back run the enbloat.sh script and hit y when it prompts you about restoring Google bloat.

If i do the enbloat method will i have to reinstall knox ? Or will i still be able to keep it off?

When you use the enbloat.sh you only restore the stuff you choose. You don't have to restore everything. In your case you leave knox and other things out and only answer yes when it asks you if you want Google bloat to be restored.
The script is very user friendly. Just run it and follow the instruction. And just to give you peace of mind, these scripts do not delete anything from your system permanently so don't worry about breaking your system.

Debloat v5.0 removed Scrapbook from Air Command
The debloat worked fine but the Scrapbook app in Air Command is now showing error "no application found to handle this actions".

Removing apps is what a debloating script does. If you want your app back just run the enbloat script. All the instruction you need is provided in the original post.

Appreciated. I wanted to debloat but did not expect the scrapbook app to be debloated. Is there any way that I can retrieve this one app, without the rest of the garbage that will return if I "enbloat".
I recall finding the app the last time and renaming from .bak to .apk and it worked.

The app is either in /system/app or /system/priv-app. Rename app.apk.bac and app.odex.bac if it exists to app.apk and app.odex and reboot. I don't remember exactly which app is the one you need.

Download the latest tools from the AFH link near end of post. It includes the changes in the attached "jobs" zip. You only need "jobs" if you downloaded the tools before May 11
EDIT May 29: Playstore is currently unreliable. Until updated, use the workaround here.
UPDATE May 17: Install Other Launcher and Install Kingroot tools may not complete if Windows username has spaces. I'll fix in next update. Until then, if your username has spaces, use this fix.
Here are tools for the 2014 Fire HD 6 and 7. A little late, I know, but some of you who still troll the forums may find them handy. Download the tools from AFH link, extract and run RUNME.bat.
IF YOU PLAN TO ROOT, TURN OFF WIFI NOW!
Tested working on OS 5.1.2.1 and below, except:
- Current Kingroot can't root 5.1.2.1. You need to downgrade. See "ROOT OS 5.1.2", below.
- OS 4: Only OTA blocking is implemented in the Block/Unblock jobs. [5/13/16 UPDATE: Also, Play Store isn't working on OS 4.

Before running a job, look here for any tips and instructions. This info is also in the readme.txt in the zip​
INSTALL PLAY STORE - Like it says. Works on both rooted and unrooted OS 5. Not for OS 4. EDIT May 29: Playstore is currently unreliable. Until updated, use the workaround here.
INSTALL NOVA LAUNCHER - Installs Nova to /system/priv-app so widgets work. If you just rooted, make this your first custom launcher. You can replace it or add a different one later.
INSTALL OTHER LAUNCHER Installs the launcher app in user_launcher folder to priv-app. Get the apk for the launcher you want (from apkmirror.com for example) and put it into the folder and run the job. EDIT 5/16/2016: Filenames must end with ".apk" No spaces allowed; replace with "_". (The tool will find spaces and pause while while you fix.)
HOW TO INSTALL GOOGLE NOW (also in Readme.txt):
It's much easier to install Google Now if Amazon is blocked, and you need a custom launcher to do that.
1. If you don't have a custom launcher installed, use Install Nova tool (installs Nova and blocks Amazon)
If you have a custom launcher, block Amazon so your custom launcher is running.
2. Get Google Now (small) from apkmirror.com, e.g., put into user_launcher folder and run Install Other Launcher job.
You'll boot to your "other" launcher
3. Run Google Now in app drawer and:
If prompted to Update Google App (Get it from Google Play), do it.
If prompted that other launcher is default, tap link to go to Amazon Settings. In Apps & Games>Manage all Applications: Swipe to All, scroll to your other launcher, tap it and see if "Launch by Default" is on. If yes, Clear Defaults. If no, go to your launcher settings and see if you can turn off default there.
Some launchers don't give up their default easily. If pressing home key doesn't show "Select Home App" after doing the above, run Block/Unblock tool and switch to Amazon. Then block Amazon again. After restart, press home key and you'll get "Select Home App" and be able to choose Google Now.
UNINSTALL LAUNCHERS - Uninstalls and deletes everything associated with a launcher installed to /priv-app. If multiple, prompts you to choose the one to uninstall.
INSTALL APPS - Installs all the apps in the user_apps folder. Put the apks into the folder and run the job. Filenames must end with ".apk" No spaces allowed; replace with "_". (The tool will find spaces and pause while while you fix.) Don't install a launcher with this; use one of the launcher tools.
BLOCK/UNBLOCK - OTA, ADS, AMAZON LAUNCHER, APPSTORE, AMAZON SEARCH
Except for OTA, these work only on rooted OS 5. OTA does a soft block on unrooted OS 4, hard block on rooted.
OTA: Disables update packages and renames DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk for a "hard" block. Unblock reverses it.
ADS: Blocks/unblocks the lockscreen ads.
AMAZON LAUNCHER: Block disables the stock launcher (Amazon UI) and the Appstore, which forces the home key to use your custom launcher. Unblock switches you to Amazon. Checks for custom launcher before disabling Amazon. Black screen with multiple custom launchers: If you haven't set a default launcher, disabling Amazon will boot to black screen. (System doesn't know which launcher to use.) Press home key (circle at bottom) for launcher choices. TIP: To easily switch between your launcher and Amazon, use @bibikalka's guide here to set up "one-tap switching" from launcher home screen.
APPSTORE: Blocks the appstore so in-app links take you to the Play Store (instead of throwing that stupid Appstore prompt). Amazon complains bitterly if you run this from Amazon UI, so use it at your custom launcher or just use the Amazon launcher block.
AMAZON SEARCH: If you have Google Search installed, blocking Amazon Search makes your launcher search bar use Google instead of Amazon shopping.
DEVICE INFO - Just some specs that I find interesting. Lazy man's way to find out which tablet is plugged in, OS it's running, whether rooted . . .
INSTALL KINGROOT, ROOT, BLOCK OTA - Installs Kingroot, prompts you through rooting and blocks OTA updates.
- Installs kingroot v.4.8.5 by default.
- You can skip installation if Kingroot already installed
- You can install a later version if available: Check for new versions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
ROOTING AND UPDATES: An update file can download while you're rooting. The Kingroot tool prevents it from installing as soon as you press Enter to tell the tool you're rooted. Then it looks for any downloaded file and if it finds one it tells you where it is and prompts you to delete.
Amazon says that updates install when the the device is not being used, but be aware that on OS 5 there's some risk. To minimize the risk, never leave the tablet idle while rooting. Just keep running Kingroot until root is successful and then press Enter to block installation of any download. (These instructions are in the tool.) To eliminate all risk, you can downgrade and root OS 4.5.3. On OS 4 the tool blocks update installation before rooting. (There's no way to do this on OS 5.) From OS 4.5.3, you upgrade with root in TWRP per bibikalka's root Tut.
True story: Kingroot once rebooted 5 times and told me "Root Failed" 3 times before finally succeeding. An update had downloaded to /cache, but the kingroot tool successfully blocked installation and found the file, which I deleted. So, although it's possible you could get upgraded, as long as you keep the tablet busy trying to root and then press Enter as soon as you're rooted, it's very unlikely.
REPLACE KINGROOT WITH SUPERSU - Installs W0lfDroid's sh script and prompts you through using it to replace Kingroot.
I reviewed and tested the script and it does (only) what it says: Removes all Kingroot (except Purify app, which tool uninstalls) and installs SuperSU. The tool uses SuperSU v. 2.4.6 for OS 5 (known working on OS 5.1.2) and SuperSU v. 2.4.9 for OS 4 (because 2.4.6 didn't seem to work).
FULL DISCLOSURE: I lost root one time after running this on OS 4. I think the problem was SuperSU 2.4.6 and that's why I changed it. I've tested many times and this only happened once, but you should know it happened. AFAIK W0lfDroid script is still the best free tool for the job.
ERRORS: Script was written to remove Kingroot from multiple android versions, so it tries to remove Kingroot files that don't exist on Lollipop. THIS PRODUCES LOTS OF ERRORS. THAT'S OK. I left in all commands so it will work on OS 4, too.
USE THIS SOON AFTER ROOTING. W0lfDroid's script should work fine even with root apps installed, but all I know for sure is it runs quick and easy on a "fresh" system.
ADB Sideload
There's an adb-sideload job in the jobs folder. I didn't put it on the menu because it uses commands that may not run on some systems. Also, if you know what you're doing, it's probably faster to manually sideload an update. If someone wants to try it, put the update bin file into adb_sideload folder and run sideload.bat.​WINDOWS TESTING: Script was tested on English-language versions of Win 7 Pro and Home. Some testing on Win 10. (Thanks @SpaceBananas!) There's nothing that can hurt your tablet, but there may be kinks to work out based on Windows version. Hope a tester will work with me to help make the tools accessible to everyone. Thanks!

ROOT GUIDE: Follow this guide to use Kingroot and the root tools to set up your tablet.
At this time, Kingroot can only root OS 5.1.2 (February 2016) and below.
You can downgrade OS 5.1.2.1 (March 2016) to 5.1.2 and root, as explained in Root Guide, but this is an exception!
In general, never downgrade in order to use Kingroot. It's the fastest way to a brick!
You may be able to safely downgrade a higher OS to OS 4.5.3, root, and then upgrade in TWRP per @bibikalka's root Tut. Before trying this on an OS later than 5.1.2.1, make sure the tutorial says it's safe.

I tried these tools on my Fire HD 7 running 4.5.5.1 rooted with KingRoot.
I was able to use the script to successfully switch from KingRoot to SuperSU as well as to install Nova Launcher.
However, I had issues with the script elsewhere.
The play store seemed to install okay and it let me put in my google account info. After that, things went down hill. I was able to open the Play Store app without it crashing, but I just kept getting the "Error retrieving information from server. [RH-01]" message . I tried numerous things to correct this, but nothing seemed to work. In the end, I downgraded to 4.5.5, wiped data, cache and dalvik, and then flashed gapps via TWRP. This worked out, so all is good now.
I also had trouble with blocking the default launcher. Nova seemed to install okay, but the default launcher still worked and was a constant nag with each press of the home button. I fixed this by freezing the default launcher via Titanium Backup.
I don't know if these issues are particular to 4.5.5.1, or if I'm just unlucky. Regardless, I still appreciate your effort for putting this together. :good:

Thanks for feedback. Tools apparently need work for OS 4.5.5.1. I tested pretty well on 4.5.3 and 4.5.5, but not 4.5.5.1. There may be some peculiarity there.
- The play store error has been reported on some 2015 Fires (using a different tool, but same method to install). It's unclear why it happens on some devices and not others, and they haven't found a fix, but it may be an OS 4 issue on the Fire HDs. I'll look into it.
- Nova & stock launchers: The block on stock launcher didn't work because it isn't implemented for OS 4. As mentioned at top of OP, only OTA block is available for OS 4. I'll need to add it in an update. Hadn't thought about need for it when using the Nova tool.
Would you please look in /system/priv-app folder and see if com.teslacoil.launcher.apk is at the bottom of directory? If so, are perms set to rw- r-- r--? Let me know and we'll proceed from there to get you widgets. Thanks.

Also, I did successfully install the AppWidgetPicker.apk and LiveWallpapersPicker.apk files to /system/app using the "kindlefree" app, but I think that about all the app did. These files are also chmod'ed to 644.

I've been using OS 5 for too long! Forgot you can't get wallpaper on OS 4 without fussing. It's unclear from your post: Did the pickers get wallpaper to work? This is the way we did it back when we always booted twrp and installed xposed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-wallpaper-custom-launcher-t3123009
As to widgets: What I meant is, you should have /system/priv-app/com.teslacoil.launcher_4.2.2.apk. Do you? I just retested this on 4.5.3. Nova (com.teslacoil.launcher_4.2.2.apk) got copied there and chmod'ed to 644 as it should and widgets are working fine.
No wallpaper is a bad problem, though, and no tool can fix it--unless that LiveWallpapersPicker DID work. Let me know. And let me know about /system/priv-app/com.teslacoil.launcher_4.2.2.apk.

I think I ended up installing Nova via the app store so that's why it wasn't on the system partition. However, my widgets seemed to work when I checked again. I have no idea why they wouldn't work when I first tried them. I did end up creating two simple scripts via the "Scripter" app that would enable and disable the stock launcher. I put them as widgets on the nova desktop allowing for single click toggling of the stock launcher.

The only reason I was trying to revert to stock was that I ended up getting into a situation where the stock launcher would continue looping back to the Welcome/select language screen. I wiped cache, data, and dalvik and reflashed the 4.5.5 rom which didn't fix it. I even tried that same approach including a wipe of system... same result. I was quite surprised to see the problem continue even after wiping everything. At that point I figured I go back to full stock and start over... BAD IDEA.
Anyway, I ordered a new one and it should be here tomorrow. I'm now curious if it's possible to recover the bricked device via the UART port on the motherboard. We'll see.:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

Yes, wallpaper works fine on OS 5. [For others who read this, on OS 4 the only way to get wallpaper is with Xposed (installed in TWRP) and the kindleBG module in the link I posted above. And BTW, although the tools don't block OS 4 Amazon launcher ATM, it can be done manually. Commands are here.]
Thanks for your input. Play store didn't work for me either this time, despite earlier success. Everything else except the launcher block (and other non-OTA blocks) does work, so for now I'm just going to edit post and see if there's any other interest in play store on OS 4. (I trust you'll get OS 5 on replacement or will want to update to it.)
As to TWRP: Once tablet is set up, booting TWRP isn't needed much except for upgrading. and bibikalka gives us lots of options for doing it.
Let us know if anything comes of UART port tests. You'd be the hero of the community!

Workaround for Windows username with spaces
The Install Other Launcher and Install Kingroot jobs may not complete if your Windows username has spaces in it. I'll fix this in next update. Meanwhile here's the workaround:
1. Right-click RUNME.bat and choose Edit. [file opens in Notepad]
2. Add a blank line under :: Set paths and run menu.
3. Type: SET "username=abc"
4. Make sure this section of RUNME looks like below and then save and close Notepad

This changes the username only for the tools. The rest of Windows continues to use the real username.

Used the tool on my Fire HD 6 (4th Gen) running a Rooted OS 5.1.2.1 to install a new launcher and block OTA's, ads, fire launcher, appstore, and Amazon search. Everything worked without issue! Thanks for the awesome and simple to use tool! Tablet is now almost pure Android. Great work!!!
Sidenote: Used bibikalka's TUT (http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-lollipop-root-gapps-t3163950) on my Fire HD 6 that was currently running Fire OS 4.5.3 with TWRP Recovery to obtain a Rooted Fire OS 5.1.2.1..

I adb'd the 5.1.2 upgrade to my slab this way.
$ adb push update-kindle-20.5.4.2_user_542168620.bin /sdcard/
3047 KB/s (663908627 bytes in 212.722s)
My OS is FIRE OS 5.1.2 Build Date March 31, 2016 1:37 AM.
I tried and got an error to the effect, "cannot upgrade because the upgrade you are trying is older than the one you have".
So I'm probably running an even later version of 5.1.2 where they blocked that loophole.
I'm just going to by a cheap Chinese slab and root that.

Yuh, I used sideload AND IT WORKED!!

Confirmed, this procedure worked for Fire (5th generation), however the amazon update file is different (see a few posts back)

I just got a fire HD 6 (4th Gen) with the 4.5.2 OS.
Everything I see talks about 4.5.3 and later. I have not turned on wifi, so basically in a holding pattern for now. I want to root/twrp and maybe a custom rom.
Can some give me advice on the best path to take? Should I upgrade then root? Or root then upgrade? Any advice is appreciated.

I've recently received a second NST and decided to start some tests which I didn't want to mess up my regular device doing.
My first item is GApps. UNLESS you absolutely MUST have Google Books (1.2.2 is the only working version w/sync--but no purchase ability), there is no need to install GApps. All of my apps which will run on the NST are perfectly happy without GApps, including many whose current versions (like MX Player and the NPR app) balk at running without GFS (Google Framework Services) on newer devices. I guess the old versions just predate all that.

Edit: I've come across an exception: Tasker and any apps generated from Tasker/App Factory (that includes my own USB one-touch toggles, Current Bookcover Screensaver, and Screenshot). It turns out that Tasker and its daughter apps have a built in dependency on two Google Maps library files. You don't get these by installing Maps (tried that...). Instead they are a part of GApps installation. But you can place these two files yourself to solve this issue (attached below--the xml file is zipped so you can actually download it instead of view it). Copy the files into these locations (you will need to mount /system as RW temporarily):
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Set permissions for both files to rw-r--r-- and reboot.

NONE of the apps in the GApps install package work any longer except for the rudimentary sync/account files that are needed for Google Books, and those must be set via GMail (which otherwise does not work). OK, Calculator works But you don't need GApps to run it. You also cannot sign in to Google or access the Market any more with the apps in the package. But installing GApps will clog your system with a bunch of apps churning away in the background, eating up your battery.
Realistically there is not much in the PlayStore for our devices and most useful apps need to be found elsewhere and sideloaded. However, if you have your heart set on PlayStore access, I recommend the Yalp Store (FDroid). It works well on the NST (I just used it to install MX Player), but you do have to update it from time to time when Google has made some sort of api change, and you cannot purchase apps this way.
Disclaimer: my test of apps is not exhaustive, of course. You may have the exception to my proposed rule. But I doubt it.

The easiest way is to use the Factory restore option of Nook Manager. That will trigger a reimage with whatever the device left the factory. On my recent acquisition that was 1.0.0! You can use the 1.2.1 update zip from the B&N website to get back to current ( barring the 1.2.2 update which I think is pushing out early Pacific Time on weekends--still have to check that).
