Guide to upgrade KII-L21 to MM & active FP of Custom Roms. - Honor 5X Guides, News, & Discussion

Dear XDA & Fellow Community Members,
This Guide is for KII-L21 variant ONLY!
& hereby declare that not I nor XDA is responsible for any damage & or WW3 trigger of your device.
Try at your own risk.
Assuming you have variant KII-L21 ( cust version : C636D00x/C185D00x )
& also on stock LP firmware, rooted, bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed.
if not, search forum for BL unlock, rooting & TWRP installation guide.
Step 1 : Take a clean Nandroid of existing installation of your device.
Step 2: Flash stock recovery via ADB & Fastboot of your last known stock rom installed
this one worked for me : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24545070682210594
Command : adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery *recovery img name*.img
Step 3 : Download your exact firmware.According to cust version stated in "About Phone" of your last stock rom.
( cust version : C636D00x/C185D00x )
Cust : C636D00x >>> http://consumer.huawei.com/vn/mobile-phones/support/downloads/detail/huawei-gr5-vn.htm?id=82266
Cust : C185D00x >>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/how-to/kii-l21-gr5-marshmallow-ota-caputered-t3388491
Step 4 : Extract the zip & copy dload folder to your SD card. It'd be safer if a high speed fresh SD is used I suppose.
Step 5: Turn off your Device, the press the Volume up+Volume Down+power button at same time for 10 seconds,
then release the power button only. you'll see firmware upgrading. wait for upgrade to finish.
Step 6 : If you wish , you can set up EMUI, but not mandatory. now, flash TWRP again.
Step 7 : Download any build newer than 20th july of CM , download gapps Nano, flash together via TWRP
if any error is found, just factory reset from TWRP & flash again.
CM Thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/hon...-unofficial-cyanogenmod-13-0-nightly-t3344499
Step 8 : First boot might take few minutes, after booting, set up CM. Voila !!! FP works like charm ^_^
Extra steps >>>>>
if you want FP on Ressurection Remix, just dirty flash RR latest build just after setting up CM. it worked for me, not sure if it will work for you or not. if found boot loop, i'll suggest waiting for @maxprzemo to update RR.
& Again, Thanks to @crpalmer & @BadDaemon for everything they have done for our device. :good:
& also thanks to al the moderators & whole XDA community ^_^ :good:
:highfive: :highfive: :highfive:

UPDATED NEWBIE GUIDE v2.0

IMPORTANT NOTE !!- Before following any step or asking any question, please read the guide & the below comments very carefully & thoroughly
- You are choosing to make these modifications, I take no responsibility for bricked devices, dead or corrupt SD cards, accidental data wipe etc.
- This guide only supports users who have UNLOCKED their BOOTLOADER using OFFICIAL method
- I have dropped support for users who have UNLOCKED their BOOTLOADER using UNOFFICIAL method as it was risky & confusing
- This guide will be updated as new information, TWRP, methods are added. Do let me know if I have forgot to mention anything useful
MIUI ROM
MIUI (pronounced as Me-You-I) is Xiaomi's custom built firmware on top of Android like Samsung's Grace UX, HTC's Sense, OnePlus's OxygenOS which runs on their smartphones. MIUI is also the second most popular Android firmware, after CyanogenMod. MIUI is based on Android's AOSP base with its own modifications and extensive features over the top. At first glance it resembles like a hybrid between Google's Material Design and Apple's iOS. But unlike Stock Android or iOS, MIUI is very intuitive, feature rich and has multiple tweaking options.
MIUI is updated regularly depending on the development branch. Xiaomi takes reports, feedback and suggestions from the community, addresses the bugfixes and integrates new features upon request. Most of Xiaomi devices are regularly patched with monthly security updates. The flagship "Mi" series like Mi3, Mi4, Mi5 receive quicker Android version updates than their budget "Redmi" series like Redmi 2, Redmi 3, Note 2, Note 3 etc.
TYPES OF MIUI ROM
There are 2 development branches of official MIUI ROMs for all Xiaomi devices.
A) Stable Branch aka Stable Builds
- It is updated on a monthly basis or longer
- New features are added slowly after testing
- Higher system stability and less bugs than Beta ROMs
- It has a four digit numbering scheme (X.X.X.X)
- For eg. 8.X.X.X is MIUI8 Stable ROM
- Stable ROMs come in 2 variants
1. MIUI China Stable ROM
- This ROM is pre-installed on all Xiaomi devices sold in China
- It is made for the Chinese market & contains Chinese MIUI apps
- Google Apps are absent. You can install them manually or by using ADB
- It supports Chinese & English language
2. MIUI Global Stable ROM
- This ROM is pre-installed on all Xiaomi devices sold outside China
- It is made for the International market & contains English MIUI apps
- Google apps are pre-installed by default
- It supports 50+ languages
B) Beta Branch aka Developer Builds
- It is updated on a weekly/bi-weekly basis or longer
- New features are added quickly for testing
- Lower system stability and more bugs than Stable ROMs
- It has a three digit numbering scheme (X.X.X)
- For eg. 6.11.21 is MIUI8 Beta ROM for 21th Nov, 2016
- This ROM is not pre-installed on any Xiaomi device.
- You have to install Beta ROM over Stable ROM manually.
- Beta/Developer ROMs come in 2 variants
1. MIUI China Beta/Developer ROM
- It is made for the Chinese market & contains Chinese MIUI apps
- Google Apps are absent. You can install them manually or by using ADB
- It supports Chinese & English language
2. MIUI Global Beta/Developer ROM
- It is made for the International market & contains English MIUI apps
- Google apps are pre-installed by default
- Supports more than 50+ languages
Vendor aka Unofficial MIUI ROM
- Official MIUI ROM is found on Xiaomi devices that are bought from official channels
- Official channels include Xiaomi stores, flipkart.com, amazon.com etc.
- Vendor/Unofficial MIUI ROM is typically found on Xiaomi devices that are bought from unofficial channels/third-party resellers
- Unofficial channels include geekbuying.com, gearbest.com, banggood.com, ebay.com etc.
- Resellers take any of the official MIUI ROMs and modify it by injecting malwares, adwares, promotional apps etc.
- Vendor ROM may or may not contain Chinese MIUI Apps or Google Apps
- The Vendor ROM is then flashed by the reseller via EDL mode using MiFlash Tool, which bypasses LOCKED bootloader status
- Vendor ROMs can be identified by their odd 5 digit numbering scheme (X.X.X.X.X) eg. MIUI8 8.0.1.1.0, MIUI7 7.9.8.8.0
- You can identify a vendor ROM by comparing its version with official MIUI version here : http://en.miui.com/download.html
- Due to stability & security reasons, such ROMs should not be used and should be changed immediately.
- You should flash official MIUI ROMs using MiFlash Tool via EDL mode.
TWRP
TWRP stands for Team Win Recovery Project. It is a custom recovery used to flash ROMs, kernels & scripts, take full system backups, restore backups etc. There are multiple versions of TWRPs for the Redmi Note 3 Snapdragon (kenzo). Many new users are confused as to which version of TWRP to flash after UNLOCKING the BOOTLOADER OFFICIALLY.
Thanks to Xiaomi for the multiple hardware revisions, outdated kernel sources & the tiresome process of unlocking the bootloader, this device has become even more complicated for the developers as well as for the end users. Hopefully Xiaomi updates the kernel sources as soon as possible. This will result in a streamlined and unified environment for the developers while compiling ROMs and for the user for a better end user experience.

For official users you can flash other ROMs with Alka TWRP as well.
For unofficial users you must flash Safe TWRP v2 after Alka to avoid hardbrick if you flash MIUI ROM.
I am running now stocl global rom with officialy unlocked bootloader.
How can I flash Alka recovery to backup and install cm13? just use adb flash recovery?
Thanks for the initiative, can you explain more about the partitions.
What if one doesn't have all the partitions backed up and flashed custom rom ( CM 13)?
Also please include the current version of TWRP for respective recoveries.

Santhosh's CM13 zip based on M firmware has M boot loader. After flashing the zip your bootloader gets locked & gets updated to M boot loader.
So if you want to revert back to MIUI based on Lollipop you need to take backup of each & every partition using Alka TWRP, other TWRP wont work.
This restores the phone back to L boot loader & preserves IMEI.

Can you also include them in the OP like official is on 3.0.2, alka on 3.0. Will be easier to keep track.
I think for officially unlocked bootloader the official TWRP should be used. You can flash the universal boot image patcher as a secondary ZIP if needed, and you can back up EFS with it
Hey all, I have successfully unlocked unofficially and flashed a alka via fastboot but I can't boot into recovery.
If I do adb reboot recovery it goes to a screen with a picture of my device which I assume is the stock recovery. If I reboot with Vol Up and Power I get the same thing. Any ideas? Thanks!
EDIT: I flashed "Safe TWRP v2" then Alka and it worked! Thanks OP
Nice information.
So the alka version is the best for official. Just want to know more:
1. Is that mean that backup/restore feature of cofface not backup all partitions?
2. Are there any differences between cofface and alka beside backup feature? Both seem not built from latest official twrp.
3. How about flashing (not restoring) other Rom from Santosh M Rom?
Thanks.
Sent from my Redmi Note 3 using Tapatalk
I installed alka version and it is in chinese, I am trying desperately to find a way to switch language, but all the guides online point to twrp theme manager, which does not work. any guide to change language from within twrp?
I flashed Cofface twrp also and the language is still in Chinese. there is no way to add some files somewhere to change the freakin' language?

1. Yes, only Alka TWRP is capable of backing up & restoring all partitions including bootloader.
2. Alka TWRP backs up EFS (IMEI) partition as well, Cofface dosent. Rest all features are same.
3. For official unlocked users : You can flash any ROM using Alka TWRP.
Unofficial unlocked users : You must flash Safe TWRP v2 before flashing any ROM else it will lead to hardbricking.

...but i want the official bunny bootloader back...
...how can i restore it back ?
...flashing with mi flash tool maby ??
Thanks for this post cos this finally clears up my confusions.... And well I suppose Cofface is good because rooting after updates is easy....But just one question....Exactly how do I install OTAs? It seems I cant install the small 150mb ota files so I have to install the fastboot rom...But do I have to wipe system before that? Because I tried flashing 7.3.6.0 update (fastboot rom 1.1gb) without wiping system and its still showing me on 7.3.5.0.... So what exactly is the method before applying OTAs?

You need to use recovery ROM, not fast boot.
And how to move from unofficially unlocked bootloader to official unlocking?

Hello guys,
I'm requesting you share it more to help others.
Don't blame me or other members if anything gets wrong with you or your device. Thanks
Things you need:::
Important Unlocked Bootloader officially.
1.MIUI fastboot ROM this http://bigota.d.miui.com/6.11.3/ken...1103.0000.00_6.0_global_f7309f8161.tgz (comes in *.tgz or *.tar not in .zip)
2.Xiaomi Mi Flash tool-BETA version.
3.ZCX TWRP.
4.CM14 CM14-firmware_20161115.zip from here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=385035244224398629
5. NitrogenOS(based on Android_7.1) http://xyyx-dev.ru/nitrogen-os/testing/nougat_7.1/kenzo/Nitrogen-OS-kenzo-20170106.zip

6.Any open Gapps package for android 7.1 on your requirement. I'm using mini version.
7.voLTE patch from here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634741250
nothing else
Q.Why fastboot ROM?
A.because it formats all the partitions also your internal storage (Take a backup 1st )and re-partitions all files on correct address. And this ROM uses the firmware that is mostly used on custom ROMs as I guess. I don't know I'm correct but that is what I think.
Q.Why NitrogenOS?
A.comes with less camera bug. Overall performance is good, can run substratum theme engine.
Q.Why voLTE patch?
A.it works on all voLTE or non-voLTE declared cm14.1 ROM. May be you will find your voLTE working without flashing it.
Q.Why ZCX recovery?
A.it backups all partition and have all the features of other RN3 supported recoveries(cofface, alka, official etc.)
Q.why cm14_15112016_firmware?
A.since it may lock your bootloader again but works great give a thanks to the developer of it.It is must to use this firmware for any force stop issue.
Q.Why RADON KERNEL
A.comes with stability and improves battery and performance get it here https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/development/kernel-t3414884
Follow these steps carefully and have patience!
Step 1
Flash the MIUI fastboot ROM v6.11.3through PC by using MiFlashTool using clean all option.
Step 2
after flashing, It takes too much time to setup your MIUI. recommended to use internet.
Step 3
now you find voLTE icon on this MIUI ROM.
Step 4
reboot to bootloader and check whether your bootloader is locked again or not. If locked, unlock again using official method.
Step 5
flash ZCX TWRP.
Step 6
reboot to ZCX. And take a backup of only these partition efs, firmware on your internel or in PenDrive(recommended).
Step 7
Make a folder like this "MIUI 6 efs" on PC and Copy the TWRP(/TWRP/backups/...) backup folder in PC from PD.
Step 8
Now copy these tools in PD CM14 firmware15112016, NitrogenOS, gapps, VoLTE_v2N_13-1-17.zip in PD and connect to RN3.
Step 9
Format system,data,Dalvik/ART cache,cache.
Step 10
choose install and flash the CM14_151112016_firmaware. It may lock your bootloader again. To check, reboot to bootloader from recovery and check by using fastboot oem device-info command on PC. If locked unlock again through official method.
Step 11
Now reboot to ZCX from fastboot. By pressing volume up button 1st and then power button when get a vibrate feedback leave power button(not volume up) untill the recovery window get shown.
Step 12
Now install NitrogenOS, install fpc_fix.zip(if you are using fpc fingerprint sensor, mine is fpc sensor so i flash it everytime), install Gapps and then restore the EFS backup you have taken(on MIUI6.11. blah blah).
Step 13
reboot to system and setup
If you find HD icon on status bar then good use it now or reboot to recovery and install
VoLTE_v2N_13-1-17.zip. now reboot you will definitely get that. If not then restore again the EFS partition.
You will surely get. If everything get done take a full backup of this ROM for future this ROM's EFS partition gonna work for you in future.
I'm SURE you will be stuck on this ROM
Everything is here latest android, Vulkan API, better battery backup and voice over LTE
Final
If it helps then thanks me and specially thanks to Sudeep Duhoon(https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4913907) for voLTE patch.
--to XIAOMI for giving the permission to you for unlocking youe bootloader.
--to all others.
--All credits goes to those who provide these fixes and tools
The voLTE patch will also work on non-voLTE android 7.1 ROMs.

Guide to flash Nougat if you face bootloops when upgrading

Hey guys!
This is just a simple post for you guys who want to make the jump to Nougat on the Snapdragon version of the Redmi Note 3, but face issues like bootloop or soft brick .
I tried many times to flash to Nougat and failed, so I thought I would document my experience for anyone who needs it.
The main problem I faced was an outdated bootloader.
Here, I have detailed the steps I took to flash Nougat successfully on my phone.
This does assume that you do have some experience and knowledge about the world of custom ROMs.
- disclaimer -
I am not responsible for any damage you may cause as a result of following this guide.
I am not affliated with any of the authors that wrote the guides that I will link in this guide.
The links are there purely for reference, and if you wrote one of the posts that I have linked in this guide, please message me to have your name at the bottom of this post.
- disclaimer end -
Here are a few things to note.
1) The version of MIUI you were on when you unlocked your bootloader.
2) Whether or not you have uploaded your bootloader
3) Whether you unlocked your bootloader officially
4) Whether you have permission to unlock the bootloader from XiaoMi.
5) Download and install the latest version of MiFlash
6) Download and install ADB and Fastboot on your PC
7) Boot into download mode to check if your PC recognises your phone. If not, reinstall the appropriate drivers.
A few websites you might want to refer to :
A MIUI forum page which teaches you how to flash/unbrick your Redmi Note 3.
http://en.miui.com/thread-235865-1-1.html
A MIUI forum page that teaches you how to repair your IMEI if it gets corrupted
http://en.miui.com/thread-245598-1-1.html
A guide to the XiaoMi deep flash cable as a kind of last resort(This is essentially Xiaomi's version of Samsung's USB jig; to force your device into download mode)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-how-to-flash-hard-bricked-redmi-t3490055
First, you may want to do a few things.
1) Check and double check your device codename (Kenzo for Redmi note 3 Pro, Kate for Redmi Note 3 SE)
2) Download the latest Global Developer ROM (There are .zip and .tar versions, for this guide we will be using the latter. I get my ROMs from here : http://en.miui.com/a-234.html )
After downloading it, decompress it until you see the file extension .tgz, then unzip it once more. At the end you should have one folder which contains some files and a folder called images.
3) Research and download the ROM and custom kernel of your choice
4) Check up and research anything you are unfamiliar with ( This is a great place to start : http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-redmi-note-3-available-twrps-t3406708 )
So, to flash the ROM, you can follow these steps. Do note that these steps worked for me at the time of writing and may not necessarily work for you.
1) Backup your stuff (Pictures, chats, contacts, etc.)
2) Go to developer options and check enable OEM unlock and ADB.
3) Reboot into bootloader.(adb reboot bootloader / vol- + pwr from power off state)
4) Use MiFlash to flash the global developer ROM you downloaded.
5) Use the MiUnlock tool to unlock your device.
6) Reboot to MIUI. (If you don't, you might face problems with TWRP demanding for password)
7) Boot to download mode again.
8) Install TWRP recovery.
9) You can now make a nandroid backup. Also make a backup of your EFS partition and keep it somewhere safe.
This assumes that you flashed the latest global developer ROM.
10) You can now flash the ROM and GApps.
11) If you want to install a custom kernel, finish setting up the phone before flashing one.
12) You can install Viper4Arise now if you want.

For those people who really want to install STOCK MIUI 9 / 10 GLOBAL STABLE ROM through TWRP Recovery on MI Max /Mi Max Prime. This guide has been simplified and involves less technical know how than my earlier guide. Do read on
This time, I will begin with the usual disclaimer. I am not responsible for your bricked device or devices failing to boot up following the procedure as described below.
This process will erase all your data[All Apps contacts sms etc will be lost]. Please ensure that you take proper backups.
This process will not wipe your phone's internal storage.
The good news, however is, if you follow these steps correctly, you can surely install and boot up successfully.
This guide works for Mi MAX Helium [MI Max Prime 64/128 GB] also with locked bootloader and TWRP. I have personally tried and tested in MI Max Prime 128 GB with locked bootloader and TWRP.
Should also work for MI MAX Hydrogen [MI Max 32 GB] provided the ROM described in step 1 below has to be Hydrogen MIUI ROM.
I will explain the steps in the manner as described below :
Step 1 : You need to download the recovery ROM Zip from the below mentioned link :

No, it will not interfere with bootloader. If the bootloader is unlocked, it will continue to remain unlocked
there is the miui version 9.5.5 from yesterday. You have to upload by miflash and then continue as in the guide. 9.5.5 corrects errors found in version 9.5.4
