Xperia XA rear camera "soften" picture automatically - Sony Xperia XA Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi guys, I've been experiencing this.
It makes the pictures look fake and out of details.
When you're focusing everything is nice and sharp, once you hit capture it all comes out blurry and soft. Please click on the links for some samples.

Any solution to this?

Hi fellow XA user,
First did you turn any image enhancers on?(display settings->image enhancement) did you toy with the camera settings (automatically resolution of back cam is 9mp but full is 13mp and the picture taking mode might have something to do with this.)
Cherrs

It looks like ordinary noise reduction, which unfortunately lies within the software and nothing that you can control.

I confirm - noise reduction is very strong with this one.

htc hd2 camera samples (purely amazing + tips to better pics)

hi all i have taken about 4hours today testing the camera to the end of my will, now i hope this thread will help other and i intend to include pics of every content and do a full review of the htc hd2 camera but here's a few samples while i get the review on the way
TIPS FOR BETTER PICTURES
- turn off wide-screen in the settings for true 5mp, if u have it on u get lower res Normal screen = 2592 x 1944 / Wide-screen = 2592 x 1552
- set white balance to the sunny settings in all condition not auto or u will get weird colors with most of ur pics (see samples below)
SAMPLE PICTURES UNEDITED - 5mp + very fine mode + touch focus + sunny (not auto whitebalance)
click for full res, untouched quality
the above pics where static objects great focus
now to compare auto whitebalance to sunny none auto setting all pics still full res, untouched quality
auto settings -------/------- sunny setting

EDIT: for people are unsure about the realness of these pics please download the originals here, just look at the image properties for proof

Thanks for your samples....
...the pictures seem to show a great deal of sharpening on them. Did you apply that in post-prod, or is it done automatically in-camera?
Also, as soon as I get my HD2 (which has been stuck in a post office all week-end... grrrr!!!!!), I will try to take a reference picture of a netural gray card, and then subtract it from real-life photos using photoshop. This should really get rid of the magenta color cast in the middle of each photo, though it would be a pain to have to do this extra step for each picture one wishes to keep...
Purely amazing? For me these look barely usable, but then I'm coming from an i8910, so I guess it depends on what you're used to...
If those are unusable then I'd like to see the pics the i8910 can produce, as to me the top pictures in macro mode look pretty good for a HTC camera
EDIT: Ok so for fun I decided to look up what the i8910 can do and ....wow!
Oh well, I rarely take pics with a phone so the HTC camera will have to make do
Those who come from WM phones the HD2 produces some of the best images and videos. At least there is a substantial improvement from the predecessor Touch HD.
Coming from the best camera phones from Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson etc. the quality is just passable.

hi mate some pointers,
1) Samsung i8910 OmniaHD = 8mp camera and omnia camera are good
2) we need to see full unedited pics to compare noise
good pics though
For me it looks like the HD2 Camera-App uses very agressive noise-reducing. Thats why Pictures look more fuzzy with lack of fine details.
Some users tell that this can be avoided by increasing the sharpnes in the camera-settings.
Please, some HD2 retail user can do this and post some more pictures here?
Yes that is true but megapixels only tells half the story, it's mostly down to the quality of the lens. I could find you similar examples taken with a 5MPx camera from Nokia...
Anyway here are much larger images. They're not full size but I doubt you'll find much noise in these images.
http://forum2.mobile-review.com/showthread.php?t=81427&page=31
Scroll to about mid point.
They might be a big improvement for a HTC device, but they are very much inferior to the photos from my old N95, or even my original Fuji 3MP digital camera.
Photos from an i8910 or a Satio are in a completely different league.
Still, I guess I should be grateful that HTC have made some improvement in this area, and I'm not actually buying the phone for it's photo taking ability.
Bagpuss.

very nice indead
Red tint in center
I notice a red tint in every sample pictures or videos taken with HD2 (I don't have one, seeing samples). Is this true or I need an eye check?
Amazing?
This pics looks like ****. At 100% have a lot of noise, bad colors and a constant pink tint in the center of the screen.
The camera of the HD2 is a really disaster like all the others of HTC.
Still though, they show improvement from previous HTC outings, for which I'm grateful.
geo tagging
Hi guys, I can't find the settings to turn geo tagging on when taking pictures, is it not possible with this phone?
Im talking about embeding location data on the image exif, I use to have nokia phones in the past, n96, n82, n95..
footprints is neat but I don't see it adding gps information on to the photo,
example of this use is when you upload images to flickr the gps location shows up on flickr.
any info on this appriciated
I think if you check the tweaks thread there is a post about turning on Geotagging.
If its not there try searching, I know I've seen at post on this in the last couple of days.
EDIT: Its in the tips thread (now stickied).
hi their focus is weird as touch focus is on which activates (spot focus) so u will notice because that the middle of the pics are focused and the rest isnt as the pics where at such close distance to the object, i will try and show the other focus modes soon

Absolutely FALSE. Pictures taken with TouchHD are by far sharper and with much better definition for details. Just take a look at those shots:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aldovanzeeland/3579556212/sizes/l/
And then.. take a look at this picture taken by the HD2.. utterly blurred, just look at the trees..
http://img252.imageshack.us/i/imag0021l.jpg/
I suppose, however, that part of the problem can be overcome by just removing the plastic protection from the front of the camera.. like we did with HTC Kaiser...

Please increasing the sharpness in your camera-settings (or set it to maximun sharpness)
And then take some pictures in good light condition with a lot of detail (maybe like the picture with the trees)

Z3 Compact no focus when close / macro [VIDEO]

Watch video below
The focus when close or macro is perfect with all smartphones (standard, Zenfone 2, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, ...) but with the Z3 Compact... look :
VIDEO:
drive.google.com/file/d/0B_nG40-uFJh7NUk0WTlMWTBjcVU/view?usp=sharing
Am I alone with this issue ?
Is it normal ?
Software or hardware ?
Can you try and tell me?
Thanks
I do not have any issues with close up or macro photos, they work perfectly fine, in fact, i find it working better then on any iphone or samsung ive tried so far...

Really???
Can you post a close macro sample of a key on your keyboard please. Like in my video.
Thanks
you cannot have the lens has close, but with the amount of details you'll still have a better macro than the older camera
this is because of the f2.2 lens
the z3 tends to indeed take better macro shots than the competition (yay! one thing the camera does sort of decent).. but yeah you cant stick the camera too close like you would with another phone. i know, it feels "unnatural" but try 1 more centimer away and compare the resulting picture instead
quick demo:
lens too close: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-...AAAOJA/qfnJKKFHX6Q/w1525-h858-no/DSC_1097.JPG
lens 1 cm away: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-...AAAOJQ/3eElMevMZ3g/w1525-h858-no/DSC_1098.JPG
/me goes clean this keyboard now
Thanks man, your pictures have the same "problem" of mine. So it's not a problem with my Z3C but it's normal for all models.
But I am a little sad about that because YES the pictures are good but when I see the PERFECT focus at 2cm with a 200$ phone... and my Z3C completly blur at the same distance... I don't understand.
I'm not here for know if the Z3C is a good phone or not... but only for know if when you watch my video (1sr post) and ou try to take the same picture thad me in the video, you have the same blur result ?
But anyway I saw your sample and you have same pictures than me. Thanks for help and taking pictures for me man
EDIT:
Look! That AWESOME focus of my chinese basic phone vs. Z3 Compact at the SAME distance :'(

Nobody can with Z3C take a picture of money at the same distance than me in my sample?

Z3 has a f2.2 Lens
And nope cant take picture that close but if i take it further away and zoom it looks the same
I can take that pic on my z1c (f2.0 lens) hehe

One Plus X Camera Samples

Video Samples of One Plus X Camera by some youtuber.
Front Camera - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMyjawiSG4s
Rear Camera - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAvlGPNpxvw
TL;DR, it looks like the X will probably have a decent daylight camera that produces somewhat soft & noisy images in low light, with quick focus & decent colors but a so-so AOSP-ish camera app.
GSM Arena's hands-on review is one of the few with any camera samples or evaluation.
HDR Off
HDR On
The image quality can vaguely be described as good. We could only test it indoors in poor lighting conditions. Considering the odds were stacked against it, we'd say the camera fared well and despite the lighting, the images are usable with good amount of detail and acceptable amount of noise. We'd like to test it more thoroughly in different lighting conditions but from our brief experience with it we are willing to bet the overall image quality is going to be pretty good.
The camera speed is also impressive. The camera launches and shoots quickly. The phase detection autofocus occasionally falters but is still quick even in low light.
The camera software is similar to the one on the OnePlus 2, which means it's really not very good. It follows the Google Camera app too closely, which honestly is far from user-friendly. There aren't many shooting options available and the app makes you feel like a novice who has just figured out how to take a picture. Those who want more control are bound to be left frustrated.
The camera app doesn't have any quick launch gesture by default but you can assign any of the capacitive buttons below the display to launch the camera by double tapping, but this only works if the phone is unlocked.

An immediate worry is the OnePlus X's camera -- the 13-megapixel sensor is supposed to be a highlight of the device, but I wasn't all that impressed. On the 28th floor of a tower in central London, the photos it spat out looked a little soft and noisy. With large windows on either side, the room wasn't exactly dark or dingy, so low-light performance could be an issue.

I have a z3 compact and I consider the X. Even though the z3c is, by many, appreciated for it's camera, for me, it's terrible. Mainly because of the freaking long time it takes to snap a photo (impossible to get a good photo of my kid). So I'd take a downgrade in "perfect conditions" for a faster camera that's reliable of snapping usable pics.
What do you reckon?

Agreed. Who knows, with a bit of editing, the photos might turn out to be pretty good. My old HTC One V had only a 5mp camera, but it was really fast. In good lighting and with a little tweaking, it managed to take some surprisingly good photos. I think the OnePlus X camera will do just fine, especially for the price.

I found this interesting comparison with the camera on the Galaxy S6 Edge+.

While the S6-series win if images are viewed in detail on a computer (no contest), they look quite similar on a phone screen or on Social Media. This means that for most usages (FB, Instagram, email, text…) the OnePlus X photo quality is quite comparable to the best out there. It is only when you inspect the photos from up close, that the higher resolution of high-end phones truly shows the difference:

Exactly my question.
Why do low light shots have so much noise in them? My Nexus 5 has that too, I'm sure there is a technical term for it; what does one look out for when buying a camera to avoid that? Is there a way to clean it up with software?

The main problems are a small sensor (collects less light) and sub-par lensing giving a high f-stop (lets in less light). The software has to compensate by increasing ISO (sensitivity of the image sensor), and that's what causes the noise. It can't be photoshopped out completely, and trying will always cause a loss of image detail.
What to look for: A camera with a large sensor, large pixels, low f-stop and image stabilization.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

Hey. Does anyone else have this problem? See attached files. That green streak at the bottom of the screen.
nope!
picture quality is great, daylight pictures are wonderful, low light pictures are good with a lot of details if the subject is not moving.. if moving they kinda sucks but because acquisition time is long so it is difficult to catch a steady image... but in general in very happy and much better of previous Sony phones i had!

Hi, anyone having trouble with macro shots on this phone or is it just me? It seems like the minimum distance between the camera and the object I want to focus on has to be roughly 60-70mm if not more, which is very very far. My friend's s8 can do up less than 30mm without having focusing issues. Is there a setting I don't know about or is it just an inherent flaw of the phone?
Thanks.

Hi! I just got my xz2 compact and I noticed that parts on the left side of the images are a bit softer than the right side. Maybe its because the protector glass in the case is not flat compared to the lens? Or maybe because my camera is not calibrated well?

okay, now I as able to detect the kind of problem. Its actually has something to do with the focus capabilities. If you switch to manual mode and use manual focus, I found that the highest value (the mountain) is not infinity in my phone but quite a bit beyond. That way its already blurry. Is this the same on your phones? Is the infinity focus setting really infinity?
Photo quality in other camera apps
Hey,
I just bought myself a xz2c - coming from a z3c. I used to take pics with camera Apps like "a better camera" or "open camera" because the shots were superior to These from the Stock app.
So i tried the same on my xz2c but the quality is worse than the Stock app - it's more visible on the selfie cam. Why does this happen?
Even the shots through WhatsApp and instagram are strangely Bad. (Yeah i know that these Apps shoot lower res pics but the difference is huge now. Deffo not how it should be)
Clan somebody reproduce this with the front cam on other camera apps aswell?

I think it is generally a hit or miss if a third party app does well with the sensor on the phone, I don't own this phone but have experienced bad quality (not just res) pictures with these apps on other phones. Why not just stick with the stock cam if it's good?

Hi guys, curious, has anyone experienced choppiness when viewing through the camera? and the potrait mode is terrible contrary to much of the rave reviews.. the background blur is not uniform most of the time.. any advice or tips?

Agree, portrait mode is terrible, also all the photos add some kind of softening filter. Only good thing is that you can edit the center of the photo so you can move the bokeh effect.

For the price(460€) is just excellent
Well I use open camera mostly due to options. At low light I've found that the image quality is GREAT if you use 4MP(16:9) checked with 9MP and 12MP(always at 16:9 ratio).
In 4MP at very low light I was super impressed(always 100% jpeg quality in the open camera app). Test it yourself, it worth your time. Just make sure you have a steady surface
EDIT: uploading pictures 12MP, 9MP, 4MP
Image difference 2-3 seconds apart - 9:00pm (4MP>12MP>9MP). Don't know why 4MP is so much better(less MP is worse than 12MP)

What do you give up by using open camera (does tele and wide angle switch work and how is 4K video etc) so far I like the manual mode of the stock miui camera app but also like the idea of using a standard app off the play store

Well if you want optical zoom you still need to use the stock camera, 4K rec? you can but I pref 1080p also I do like to adjust the bitrate of the video and audio and open camera does have that. I use to use this app to my 1+1 too
I like to customize everything and miui camera well ..2-3 settings at best
P.S. Open camera also doesn't have panorama but talking to the dev and said he's planning to include a panorama soon - Did you check the low light quality in 4MP? impressive(compered to higher res)
testing
