My moto g4 is not auto dimming (at dark) or going to full brightness (in sunlight) automatically
I checked and the sensor seems to be working (using a lux app)
Any idea what's going on?
Thanks!

Not at the moment. I don't normally use it but I did enable it for a test. It worked fine when I moved from dark to light and back so I can confirm it does work.

Silly question, but do you have 'adaptive brightness' enabled in the display settings?

Not silly at all. I tried it on the Moto 2nd gen, 3rd gen and now the G4 and I never liked it on any of them. I have had better luck just setting mine on one setting and sometimes when I'm on the golf course or something in full sunlight, I'll bump the brightness up a little. It just never seemed to be the right brightness so I gave up on it.

When I unlock the the screen, there is a few second delay in the screen resuming to the set brightens.
I am on auto brightness but there is a few second delay after unlocking & when its gone to the home screen.
Anyone have this or have I got a setting wrong some where?
Ta
Well it is set to auto mode, I guess it is normal to take a moment to measure the ambient light and set a determined brightness.
Ya good catch. My note 4 does this every once in a while too. My note 3 or note 2 never did that and it had auto settings too?

Having read the reply below yours, out might be nothing to do with auto brightess.
Is anyone else noticing this?

I also have noticed that mine does take a couple second to change the screen brightness when the brightness setting is set to auto.

Yeah mines still doing it. Might be fixed with an update. Doubt it though.
My android HU is capable of dimming the screen automatically when i turn on the headlights. However, it is still too bright even after dimming. Is there a way to adjust the dimmimg level after the HU is triggered by the headlight signal that is connected to the illum wire?
Thanks

Hey,
You can just install Lux app and it will adjust the brightness depending on time during the day.
Hi staticx1,
i read this from Play Store:
■ [Paid Only] Use your ambient light sensor or camera(s) to read in ambient light.
So, maybe the pay version of Lux is able to take the ambient light level from the usb front camera?

You don't need a camera. Inside the app options you can define brightness based on time in day. It can read the location from your car GPS and determine what needs to be the correct brightness level. Make sure you choose night node and automatically night mode inside the options.

Ok thanks
But i would like to know if a front usb camera can be viewed like a "system camera" by android system and other apps, because i think that real ambient light measurement is better than gps based sunrise and sunshine calculation...

From what I've seen, you cannot use usb camera as the android system camera...
if you want to use Lux, you can define it as the following settings:

Still have not gotten this to work. I'd love to see a video of someone showing me this working properly. I'm going nuts w /lux

me two.... not working for me. Its not changing no matter what time I set...
I'm just using "screen filter" with nova launcher. I double tap the screen for dimming and one more time for regular brightness.
You could also use tasker for that but it's overkill in my opinion.
There's also the option of Twilight - from what I understand works in a very similar way to Lux: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid.lux
When I'm in a light room the screen goes brighter but if I walk into a darker room, the screen doesn't dim unless I lock and then unlock the screen.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Yep got the same here. Thought I had a faulty ambient light sensor but obviously not.

Just tried it by covering the light sensor to make sure, no problem here (G935F). My only concern related to brightness is that the s7 just has auto brightness, but no adaptive brightness.
Uncheck the auto box and recheck. Then don't touch the slider. It's usually because in marshmallow the slider moves with the auto bright and most people touch it which makes it hold position.

There seems to be a bug somewhere still. I just tried to move the slider while auto brightness is ticked and to cover the light sensor afterwards again and it still worked and to my surprise it even took into account that I lowered the brightness and took also a lower brightness at the covered state and took my initial setting after uncovering, pretty nice, so there is indeed still adaptive brightness. After ticking und unticking auto it went back taking the default steps for brightness as before.
Having the same issue here
Definately not touched the slider.
Also, I have tested the light sensor and it appears to work fine so definately a software issue. Though I imagine we will see some software updates to fix bugs shortly after the official release date.
So you can adjust the slider with the box checked and get various levels of auto? Does it learn?

Yes.
I can't tell for sure, when I change further steps the previous seems to stick, at least to some extend so there is a logic behind it, but I can't tell for sure if it really is based on each step and sets it accordingly or if it's just changes the range it operates in. Anyways I'm a happy camper.
Also, I could reproduce the device not changing the brightness, when I put it to full at darkness it won't move anymore in auto. But as soon as I lower it again it will also change accordingly again, maybe at those with the stuck brightness the min brightness is only raised, but not lowered anymore, but just an assumption and doesn't help anyone atm unfortunately.
Use lux in play store

This is the first Galaxy phone I had, that Auto brightness actually works the way I like it.
It seems to be working fine now. It just takes a few seconds for the screen to dim (maybe I was being impatient).
After testing it further it's actually really good auto brightness.
It works, just takes some time to adjust to the lighting. Maybe the default settings are set to a certain time. Maybe with root we can adjust this..

It seems to only do it quickly when the device is lay down (as 954wrecker said). Maybe Samsung did that so it doesn't annoy you when using your phone.
this is definitely a bug imo... the auto brightness doesn't change for me either...

I also have an auto briteness issue, when I disable AutoBrite and set it manually about half my apps override the setting and enable AutoBriteness in the app's screen usually dimming the screen? SpadesFree one example and I do not see an override in the app.
Confimed that I'm having same issue, auto brightness not adjusting and slider not movingoing. Have to move it manually
Same issue. It needs to be fixed manually by editing services.jar (root needed)
Nothing else will work. None of google play apps will help with that issue. Does not matter what you do, it will always dimming if you don't fix it in framework.jar

Is anyone using Daydream VR here? I do, and I experiencing some really low brightness when I'm in VR mode.
My question is that it's possible to override somehow screen brightness when I'm in VR Mode? The users who use Daydream know that the moment you start the Daydream app the screen brightness get lower than default, and I can't change it, it's really annoying.

Have the same issue! Any one can help? Also, do Axon 7 have display settings for VR like Pixels? Cant find them.
Have you tried using manual brightness? My first thought is that it's the light sensor being covered making the phone think you're in a dark room. If so, it should be fixed by turning off the auto setting.

i dont have axon 7 but i know its amoled screen so
it uses PWM to have lower brightness (blinks fast on and off 240hz? some says? hw info app)
so its low brigthness may be to have better fps/hz
100% brightness has no pwm. (Pulse Width Modulation is not good for the eyes though, some are sensitive and others less so)
On Options --> Display, there's an option (at least in LOS) which says 'When on VR'
-reduce blur
-reduce flickering
Maybe try changing that setting if you can?
If you bought this phone because of its VR capabilities, don't install LOS since it still has trouble with VR and stuff
My Oneplus 5 (128GB) seems to adjust the Auto Brightness to aggressively. It Sets the bat to Zero in dim lit rooms.
Anyone Else experiencing this issue??
Yup, seems to randomly set it to zero for me, probably a bug.
Same here. needs optimization
It's bugged for me too.
OK, thanks for the answers, Guys. Than it will be patched soon I think.
Edit:
When you enter *#808# in Phone App you can Test the light Sensor. It seems to Return the value 0 or 1 in dimly lit rooms. And when i Turn on roomlight it is 38-45. Strange

For me is the same.
The hw is ok because with Lux autobrightness work well
Bye
Maybe it will be fixed in the next update.
Not good for me either. Wish they had kept it how stock android works. I prefer being able to set a "bias" of dim, middle, or bright screen that adapts to any condition.
This is happening to me too. Need to toggle the auto brightness off and then on again to make it work. Pretty annoying.
Frustrating issue. Brightness suddenly jumps to too low in dark environments.
Always when I unlock my op5 outside the screen is black and it needs to adjust the brightness again for me to even see something. I hope they fix this too.
Same here...hope this will be fixed soon as it is annoying af.

Yep, same here, new update 4.5.5 broke this again! Ridiculous.
you guys sure you got auto brightness activate ?
Has anyone tried screen_auto_brightness_adj setting in AutoTools custom setting? I think this might be able to fix the problem but I have not tried yet.
