Hi guys,
I have been away from flashing custom roms for a long time. I'm on stock 4.3 with I9505 rooted, with TWRP.
I rooted the phone once I got it. removed all the bloat and customized it to my liking but now i'm locked to 4.3 version as I would need to flash a custom ROM or go back to stock and upgrade to official version.
I do not want the official release with bloat so want to look for options and suggestions.
1. What's the most stable custom ROM and android version that is safe and continously developed?
2. Do I need to take any precautions while flashing? I already have apps and data backed up on Titanium Backup.
3. Something else I need to be sure of before upgrading.
Thank you for your suggestions.
I just want my Android upgraded (not for Pokémon Go though). : )

AT&T S4 with 4.2.2 MDL. I rooted it way back when. I have CWM recovery installed. No AT&T Updates have happened because they always fail At the same time what are my options for getting 4.3 or for that matter when 4.4 comes out?
I have bloatware still. Use root for backups and a few other root required apps. I've run custom roms before when I was on my HTC Evo 3D. If I install a custom rom will I loose my current root / status?
If you want a stock rom minus bloat...

I would use these as starting points because they're modded slightly and if you want more, explore other roms.
Make sure you update your recovery to avoid any errors in flashing. You can also flash to the latest radio and revert if it doesn't work for you.
You won't lose root. You already have recovery, so you can always get it back.
There are 4.3 custom roms out there, there are people who want an S4 that came with MDL. I'd flash a custom 4.3 rom. We can even ugrade (flash) our modems to MF3, MJ5, MJ6 and flash back to MDL without ruining the phone like those who took the upgrades prior to root and got screwed by Samsung.
Do some research like above and for gods sake dont unroot your phone and take any OTA updates or you will regret it.
Just my advice.
I have a rooted N4 running 4.2.2 and I want to upgrade to 4.4 (or above).
I have TWRP installed and Franco.kernel installed.
I have lots of apps installed, so I am looming for a way to upgrade without loosing my apps and data and music etc...
I dont mind loosing root, Franco kernel and twrp, I just want to able to upgrade to the newer versions that are being released. Can anyone give me an explanation on what needs to be done?
Sorry for the noobish questions, I am not an expert.
Take a backup because if your going to flash any new cusdtom rom from 4.2.2 to 4.4 your gonna have to clean flash. If you go back to stock you will still lose data. I only know data lost ways. Maybe someone else knows another way
Hi,
I would really appreciate some advice on installing the latest 4.4.2 update on my S4 i9505.
I've been using the MIUI CM rom the last few days but have found it too buggy (it's actually getting worse with updates).
I've also tried installing the Samy Delux rom, although it installs it just won't boot.
My phones boot loader is currently unlocked (no knox, early version of 4.1.2), I know if I install the new OEM rom it will install a secure bootloader.
Can someone please advise if my phone can be rooted if I install the latest rom for my phone and what the process is.
In the past I was able to install a stock rom pre-rooted, but from what I've read on forums that's no longer possible ??
Any advise would be appreciated.
you can root 4.4.2 but you will trip knox
and you can flash Pre-rooted Roms via Recovery
Hi
I am going to root my G2 for the first time. its currently on stock jellybean.
I would like to know if I should root now on jelly bean and install a custom rom or upgrade to stock kitkat first and then root?
if I am going to a kitkat custom rom would it make more sense to upgrade to stock kit kat first or is it easier to root from jellybean?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of either?
Hi
Can anyone advise on the above? I know I should be reading all the forums which I will but was just after a quick general answer so I know where to start from. I'm not new to rooting and flashing roms but I am new to the G2.
Thanks
I would recommend updating to Kit Kat first then rooting using IOroot25. That way you will have the latest radio/modem stuff to use KK Roms
Depends on the ROM. If the dev says you have to have Kitkat modem or other stuff from Kitkat, then update and root with ioroot25. If not, it will be a waste of time, so:
Download anything you need from the new ROM and put all in your phone storage (so that if you accidentally brick you still have files to flash in your SD), root, install recovery (I suggest TWRP) and from there flash your ROM!
Hi,
i want to buy a new note 4 - the version 910f.
If i update the new phone with stock 4.4.4 rom to the latest 5.1.1 - will there be any problem if i want to install root or anything like this later on? Can i still install custom roms?
I want to now this, becqause if i update my new amazon fire 7 (2015) to latest stock 5.1.1 rom - there is no chance to start recovery anymore for installing custom rom. With only 5.0.1 all is good and i can install custom rom with recovery.
Is there a similar problem with note 4 or can i install latest stock rom and won´t get any problems later?
Only thing i found is that i can´t go back to 4.4.4 when installing 5.1.1? And i can´t go back to 5 when i´m installaing marshmallow because of changing partitions size?
So if i go to stock 5.1.1 it doesn´t matter, because i don´t want to use 4.4.4 and i can still use all stock roms and change to marshmallow later?

No problem if you don't plan to use 4.4.4. Note that if you update to latest 5.1.1
>your bootloader will be locked you can't go back to previous roms or use custom roms which are based on earlier versions such as 4.4.4 custom roms or 5.0.1 custom roms.
>you can still root your phone install custom recovery and install custom roms which have newer bootloaders. However rooting 5.1.1 is bit different because with android 5.1.1 there is an extra security layer in the kernel which detects and stops device from being rooted you need a "permissive kernel" to root 5.1.1. And then you can do whatever you like.
Would it be a better decision to stay on 5.0.1 for the moment and later install 5.1.1 custom rom? To not loose unlocked bootloader?
And one more question: if I deactivate bloatware in application setting off stock rom, is bloatware complete deactivated or is it still running in the background somehow?

You can install 5.1.1 with these bootloaders coj3, coi3, pok1 , coh4 these are safe and won't lock your bootloader. i'd recommend 5.1.1 over 5.0.1 because the difference is day and night in long term use (when u have many apps) 5.1.1 is much smoother and better battery life just don't install coj5 or newer bootloaders. I don't use custom roms because in my experience stock rom is the best custom roms have some bugs etc. If you deactivate bloatware in application settings then its no more running in background.
OK, thank you. But so I should deactivate ota updates and flash latest stock update with Odin, so that I don't get latest locked bootloader?
How can i update to latest 5.1.1 update and keeping the (old) unlocked bootloader?
Do i have to donwload version from smamobile and flash with odin? How can i disallow to update bootloader too?
And if i update with ota - i will get latest (locked) bootlader automatically - no chance anymore to remove it?
-----------------------------
I don´t want to root my phone the first time (because of knox) but later on i maybe want to root too.

There is no way to be sure if the older bootloader will work with latest 5.1.1 rom. So its better to stick with the bootloader which comes with the rom and yes if you update with OTA you will get latest 5.1.1 and bootloader automatically. Just go to sammobile and download 5.1.1 with COJ3, COi3, or POK1 (nordic countries). and Flash with odin.
