So I've normally been good at figuring stuff out on my own when flashing custom roms, rooting, etc but it's been awhile since I've messed with it and it seems things keep getting tougher (or maybe it's just me). Anyway here is the story... I am currently running JasmineROM (Android 5.0 Lollipop) on my Verizon Note 3 (SM-N900V), but I was considering upgrading to a version 6 Marshmellow rom like Temasek. One problem is that for some reason, I never installed a custom recovery so I am not sure how to proceed. I guess my questions are:
1. Do I need to downgrade to Kit-Kat somehow to install TWRP, and if so, what is a good guide?
2. What is the best, fastest, bloatware-free Marshmellow custom rom out there for SM-N900V right now?
3. I looked at the installation instructions for TWRP and it says to only use a specific version depending on whether your bootloader is the upgraded kit-kat version or not. How do I know this? Would it be updated since I'm using a 5.0 rom?
Sorry for the noobish questions and thanks in advance for any help!
Easy answers:
1 you can not back rev to KitKat
2 you can not install any custom recovery until you unlock the bootloader
3 you can not install any version of Marshmallow until you have installed a custom recovery because there is no official Marshmallow for the Verizon Note 3
Look in this forum for how to unlock the bootloader.

a. Unlock bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...l/official-note-3-verizon-bootloader-t3359370
b. Install TWRP ( I used 3.0.2-0 ) the easy way: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager
c. Install CM13 ( This is the only MM ROM I could get to work on the Verizon network) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...opment/rom-temaseks-unofficial-build-t3364382
Thanks for the help! I managed to figure it out myself after realizing I needed to unlock the bootloader. Thanks for taking the time to post!

Use CF-Root for KK

or, like i did, use Odin to flash CWM (PhilZ) for KK and the SuperSU1.93 zip in Recovery.

I'm sitting here with my new Note 3, its an Snapdragon one, LTE, N9005, and i updated it manually to 4.4.2 using odin, and now i'm Freaking tired of touch****z (sorry. Don't mind the language.) and well, basically i don't get what to do, do i need to downgrade it? what do i need to install a recovery? how do i get root on stock? I hope that i don't seem rude, i just lost track, and i don't want to brick a seven hundred euro phone, understandable, so if somebody would help me out, I'd be super glad. and again thanks for a still awesome community XDA Members.

You can gain root by following the post above, take note that rooting might trigger your knox counter and void your warranty.
Since you've lost track search and read will be your best option.
So far so good.
Thanks for the Help guys, I managed to do all this and install Philz recovery, but other recoveries wont boot, when i tried to install CM11 through Philz i get Something about an kernel not enforcing, and nothing more but that looping over and over again. Is it even possible to install roms on it?
Any help would be super great

Are there any ASOP Roms on that out?
I Found out that Recoveries also changed, and install a CWM that works with 4.4. I'm pretty fine with it now!
Now i'll just be waiting for asop stuff like the rest of the note3 section. Thanks for the Help everybody!

Hi all,
I am interested in the CM11 ROM. Last night I spent 6hrs trying and failed, epically.
Here is what I did already:
1. Downgraded from 4.4.2 back to factory
2. Successfully rooted
3. Installed ROM Manager
4. Successfully downloaded CM11 and latest GApps
Then when I tried to boot into recovery it kept going to a screen with a little android guy lying on his back with a red triangle!!! I tried six times.
I got frustrated and just updated back to 4.4.2 and have been dealing with it. I am still rooted and have been able to remove my bloatware and other things you need root access for.
Any thoughts or help as to how I can install the CM11 rom?? I am happy running NovaLauncher and using DynamicNotifications to approximate it but really want to try out CM11.
Cheers and thanks!
Lucky there is no way to root on 4.4.2 yet or atleast no Recovery's yet it could be worse you're atleast rooted and it didn't brick your phone

Did you actually try flashing a recovery first? Just installing ROM manager won't install the custom recovery needed to flash ROMs. You have to do that step as well.

LG blocked the Loki exploit with 4.4.2 so you can't flash recoveries currently. You'd have to flash back to 4.2.2 to do that. Which if you want custom ROMs now its going to have to be done sooner or later. Which carrier and model number do you have? If you have an international D802 the above post by @zekurosu will work for you, otherwise don't use that one. You're gonna have to find the method for your model number.
My first guess was that you missed the flashing the custom recovery step, which people above me have already helped ya out on. For being new to Android you did fairly well, you just missed that one step.
Good luck!

I have an ATT D800 running 4.4.2. I can't decide whether its worth it to flash back to 4.2.2 to try again. Pretty happy with NovaLauncher + widgetlocke and fairly closely approximates what I am looking for.
For what its worth, I was in 4.2.2 when I tried the first time and failed. I think mackster is right, I didn't flash the custom recovery. I basically flashed back to 4.2.2->rooted->tried to boot into recovery (OVER and OVER) then gave up and upgraded back to 4.4.2.
Thanks for all the help. At least I now have a rooted phone and have been able to do some cool stuff with that. My goal is to get nexus 5 software in an LG G2 body (battery, camera, etc)
@android_nashville There's a way to have the best of both worlds. You can flash back to 4.2.2 (10d preferably) root, flash a custom recovery with Flashify or FreeGee. Both available on the play store. Then actually update to 4.4.2 following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2483043. Eventually, if you want to flash custom ROMs you're going to have flash back to 4.2.2 and do this process regardless. The 4.4 aboot image (bootloader) can't be bypassed with Loki. Its been blocked. But some brilliant devs basically found out they can make a hybrid setup, with the 4.2.2 aboot, and everything else 4.4.2. This way you can have the ability to flash custom recovery, kernels and ROMs.
Hello guys,
Please excuse my noobish question, but i need to find some good answer.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, model number SM-N9005 with Android version 4.4.2.
The phablet is rooted thanks to Towelroot. And from there i install Titanium Backup and many others intersting stuff that need/or not root.
I enjoyed Xposed and i'm thinking i want to enjoy CyanogenMod also.
Now ... my problems is that i am very confused about what i have to do next.
And after i spent some time to research this, i've come here for some guidance because i fell that i'm running in circle.
My questions are :
Do i have to upgrade to Lollipop first ?
Do i have to unroot from Towelroot and root again with Odin ?
As i saw that steps are as follow:
1. Need root
2. Install TWRP
3. CyanogenMod (as i saw 12 is the last and it's good for my device)
Many thanks !

1. Unique way to update to Lollipop (if you are rooted) is via ODIN. I don't recommend you update anyway. I still with android 4.4.2.
2. No. Only flash the new firmware via ODIN and root it then with ODIN too.
3. I don't recommend you install CyanogenMod if you are noob.
If you do want CyanogenMod, you only need to install TWRP, and then flash latest CM-12.1 nightly build in recovery. You do need to wipe /data first, though which means you will lose your apps and settings.
Always make backups!

So why do you dont recommend to me to upgrade to Lollipop ?
Is Kit Kat better at this time than Lollipop ?
If i will update via ODIN, is there a better way to do that ?
And ... Still have my question about what if i'll unroot (and how can i do that safe) and root it by examples via ODIN and then follow others tutorials with TWRP and CyanogenMod. I'm not confortable via ODIN (but if i find some good, trusted tutorials, i want to try it) because as i told you before i rooted my phablet, the easy way via Towelroot.

If you want a CM rom just flash recovery with odin. No need to root. Then backup your phone and flash the CM rom. No need to upgrade to lollipop either.
However if you want a lollipop TW based rom it's better to upgrade to lollipop first. Nevertheless you can still try lollipop TW custom rom without upgrading to lollipop first but some functions may not work well.
If you can root your phone with Towelroot and you don't want to use odin to flash the recovery, you may do so by dd with terminal emulator.

I can't seem to find a straight answer to my question since most of the info for the S4 is 2 or 3 years old now.
So I have a completely stock ATT i337 running Android 5.0.1 with the I337UCUGOK2 bootloader. My soft keys aren't working, so I would like to install a different ROM to try to fix. I understand I need to install CWM or TWRP first. So my question is this... Is my bootloader locked and I need to root my phone first before I can install either recovery? If so, what method do I need to follow for my version of Android?
I understand that with time there are improvements. Some stuff I've read makes it sound like there is a lot of automation in installing custom recoveries, and maybe I don't need to root first because they root for me.
Thanks.

Hi. Using a CID11 device w/ KINGROOT/SAFESTRAP
I know the bootloader is locked and all, but will I still be able to use CyanogenMod 13 ?
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=kltevzw
I know this is a noob question as the S5 is pretty locked down now 'geocold' is helping the enemy, but is it still at all possible to use CM13 with this safe strap option on a CID11 device.
also is there any other ROMs I could use that are similar with any kind of custom kernel that helps preserve battery life like in the past or is that a no now since the bootloader is locked.
lastly will I loose root if I can do any of the above.
....
very new to the S5 please bare with me lol

You shouldn't lose any data but a backup is always wise
According to the thread you have to be on rooted PB1 firmware and use safestrap
The guide is specific so follow his guide exactly
I would do a back up in Samsung Smart Switch or Samsung kies 3 before you use or use safestrap backup whatever you prefer

Oh ok, yeah since I'm on OK3 will I need to do the whole KingRoot method again? or if I flash to PB1 from ODIN will I still keep root/safestrap/bb not sure how this all works just started using the S5 today.
Also once that is all done, and I'm on a rooted PB1 ... I'll be able to flash threw safestrap to a MM 6.0.1 ROM ? but when I do this wont I loose root? and I thought root not able to be obtained on MM 6.0.1 with CID11 devices? this is where it gets to be confusing for me, sorry for all the questions

Yes I can not use android with out root lol, but thanks for showing me all this anyways its progress I guess, not sure if this handset was worth the money now knowing all this, but I'll stick with it.
I see no point in even bothering to run CM13 or any custom rom really with out the use of root. ehhhh anyway. Backing up my apk/data using a snazzy lil app called MyBackup Pro. for the migration.
Thanks for the help. Looks like I'll be staying on the 5.0 OK3 rom then since at least I have it rooted, and some kind of recovery even tho the whole safestrap touchwiz thing is not pleasing its better than nothing.
