Each time I reboot, my notifications sounds and ringtones for all my apps seem to change to a bunch of numbers or change to a different tone, or no longer produce sound until I set them again. This applies for FB Messenger, the default one in settings, GravityBox. I use a few custom tones I dropped into the notifications folder. I'm rooted on TruPureX 2.9 for reference, and this has been happening for a long time. Anybody else facing this issue?
Is your SD card mounted properly after a reboot? Where are your ringtones? In SD or internal? And in their correct folders? I only "loose" them if I remove my sd card while the device is working.
Did you drop them in system/app/media folder according to what is? Or the SD notification folder?

I had them in Internal/Notifications, I moved them to system/media/audio/notifications for now and I'll see how they do. Thanks!
My only other concern is for the FB Messenger app, where that app is on internal storage but still changes to something random. It's the default messenger ping, but that might be a bug with the app itself. I'll report back after a few reboots.
Quick update, I moved them to system/media/audio/notifications on the Internal Storage, and the custom sounds retain after reboot now.

Seeing how the main ringtone can be changed to whatever you want, is there a way to change the notification sounds to custom sounds as well?
It looks as if the system folder under audio where the notification sounds live, it seems to be a read only folder so there doesn't seem to be an option to drop in custom sounds into there.
Is there an app that allows the changing of system sounds or does it need to be rooted and permissions changed...
thanks
jsut make a directory on your SD card like this: (SD Card root)/Media/audio/notifications
and put all your notification ringtones in that folder.

Just like he said, create the folder on your SD card called 'notifications' (don't have to be under '//media/audio/') and put your MP3s or whatever in there. You can do this for anything BTW, 'alarms', 'ringtones', etc.
That's what I thought, I made the mistake of naming the folder 'Ringtones' on my sdcard and they weren't showing up... so just renamed the folder to Notifications and then it was all good, thanks
Hello, I have searched around for solutions for this problem but can't find anything that helps me; I have an 8gb external sd card with some music, files, etc. stored on it. There are three problems I have noticed so far with this:
The music files are not found by the stock music player or any others except Tinyplayer
Pictures stored on the external SD card only show up in the gallery until the media scan runs and then they dissapear, but are still accessible through Astro.
And I am unable to transfer files from the external sd to the internal sd
As mentioned above I can still play music files with tinyplayer and access photos using Astro but this is a very annoying problem! I have also tried formatting the card (FAT32) but this has not fixed the problem.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Deleting this file solved my problem!
using astro you can copy and paste file from external to internal, but why do you want to do that?
after the media scan runs, the thumbnails will remain until you eject the external card again
using gallery picture viewer you can see external sd pictures
it use a music player called "player" way better than the stock player, and you can have the pictures anywhere and it will pick it up
The thing is I can't though, if I try to move a file from external to internal Astro brings up an error that says "Move Error - Move Failed".
When taking photos and videos I have set it to store them in the external card but after they have been taken they only appear in the gallery momentarily and then will dissapear even though the card is still in the device.
Save your files on computer and format sd from phone
Sorry I've tried formatting and the same thing happens annoyingly!

Find someone with a card and try with his. Yours might not be good
it sounds like the Internal SD card is the problem here, not the External
are you able to create any file or save anything into the Internal SD?

Same here with Astro.. If I try to copy with My Files works ok.
Media is OK (in Music app, Gallery, etc)
what ROM are you 2 running?
that doesn't sounds right to me at all
I copy and paste files often between external to internal SD card and viceversa using Astro File, and it works without the error message you guys have reported.
try upgrading to a newer version of Astro File
if "my files" app is working then it must be either a bug in Astro version you guys are running or a bug in the ROM
i'm on Astro 2.5.2
Saving files to the internal sd seems fine and I am using the stock ROM, not rooted or anything special!
I have found out I can move files from external - internal and viceversa using the My Files App! So that particular problem must be something to do with Astro, which is strange because I am also running version 2.5.2!
I still have the problem of not being able to see media stored on the external card through most apps though, so I will try @exadeci's tip tomorrow and put some songs and pictures on an alternative card and let you all know how it goes!
Thanks for the help so far though guys

YES! It's fixed, I created a .nomedia file on the root of the external sd when I first got the phone and forgot about it, just deleted it and everything is now fine! Thank you very much!

I seem to be having problems with the internal phone storage "Media Area." That's where the apps are moved when moving them to the SD Card. So all the time my phone loses contact with the media area and those apps are no longer available. I have to reboot my phone 3-4 times before they are accessible again.
Am I the only one having this problem? I've tried to unmount that partition but it just hangs and needs to FC. I'm wondering if I got a lemon and need to return it.

Mine just became in-accessible the other day, I just moved astuff from the internal to the sd while on USB mode.
Had to format. Wouldn't mount or anything & I think I was getting a "Internal Storage Defect" message. Works ok after the format..
I thought I was the only one. If I connect my Atrix to my macbook then umount it it's not accessible to the phone. I only have to reboot once though.

I actually use Browsix now until the problem is resolved. I'm writing down each of my custom ringtones now that I am running the beta to see if it is resolved. Let you guys know in a few through an edit to this post.
EDIT: From preliminary testing so far seems to resolve the issue of failure to remount storage.
With Safely removing hardware: Ringtones Are remounted properly with no issue, internal storage has no issue. will test with external storage later but so far looking positive
With just yanking out the USB cable without safely removing hardware: You might have to manually remount internal storage but ringtones are restored properly. Internal storage can be remounted with the Settings Storage option.

Thanks! I should have known better than to just unplug without safely removing but I usually don't do it on my tablet and it doesn't cause a problem..but after testing that's exactly what it was
sort of the same issue...
my problem is that the downloaded ringtones show up but the default ringtones like the att tone etc. dont show even though i can use root explorer to navigate to them and play them. Any ideas on what i could do to fix this? Im rooted on 1.5.7 and want to stay away from a full hard reset if possible. Thanks for the help for this n00b in advance.
I got my GS4 in Australia and recently flashed the latest HongKong stock rom. Everything works fine except the gallery app.
I am using Sandisk Ultra 64gb sd card. I have put some photos and songs into the sd card. Most of the songs are shown in the music app, just a few are missing.
However, all other photos in the sd card do not show up in the gallery app. In "My Files" they do!
I have tried re-format the sd card, using another sony card, reset the system and even exchange for a new GS4. This problem still keep annoying me.
Does anyone have any solution for this?
Update:
I used to unmount the sd card from the phone to transfer files. But today I used the usb cable to connect the phone directly to try see whether the problem solved. However, I found that there is some problems that are not related to the card. I am using Windows 8. There is pop-up window when I was transferring files into the sd card part. It is basically asking me whether copy the files or not because the device may not able to play or show these files. But I am just putting normal jpg files. What's wrong with that?? Is anyone know how to solve the problem?
Solved:
I get the problem solved by re-formatting the sd card using my S4 and I must use usb cable to transfer files so that all files are visible on my device. But it is too strange that they are invisible if you use other methods.. Also when I was transferring files, the windows warned me that those files may not able to view in my S4 and ask me whether to copy those files or not.
I just cannot understand what is the problem.

No... checked it a couple of times.
It is a directory called Photo's wit a couple of sub-directories. Strange because Quickpic gives no problem. But I want to use Gallery on my S4.

It is really strange. Even my Music Albums from the sd card show up and photo's do as well in Quickpic.
The only problem is that Gallery does not access my sd card.
Solution would be great!

Thx m8... will give it a try. But first backup my sd card
I can't copy or move (but I can delete or rename) files and folders on / from the SD card (SanDisk 8GB) of my unrooted Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime (SM-G531F) with Android 5.1.1. I still can create, rename or delete files and folders.
I tried with My files and ES File Explorer, then I formatted the card in phone and with SD Formatter.
With my PC I can copy or move files or folders on / from the SD card.
I changed the SD card with one similar from my Asus TF-101 tablet and the same phone problems occur, but the phone SD card works normally in tablet!
Many thanks in advance!

Please don't reset your whole phone, it won't solve the problem anyways.
With the advent of 5.1.1 Google added a new Media Security Protocol. The affect is that any app that doesn't have root securities can not move or copy files between Int and Ext storage, except those they generate.
The good news is that I know of a FREE file manager that can get around the problem by hooking into Androids Storage Access Framework.
One small problem is that the setting turns itself off frequently, so you have to go back in and turn it back on.
The better news is that it's footprint is only a little bit bigger than 'My Files' and it has a massive amount of capabilities and settings which are 100% configurable.
Enough of the suspense, "Ghost Commander"
Good luck, it's not for the weak of mind.
P.S. To get to the switch;
Top right three dot menu
Location
Home
Storage Access Framework
and search out the Mother directory of your Ext card, then select.
Grumpa
I know this is late but i just had this problem on my note 5.
Try installing / SandiskMemoryZone.Apk should let you move pics and files then.
