Hi. My mother's Samsung Galaxy S5 is having a strange issue. The home screens are showing duplicate icons that if you press don't do anything. Also the notification bar at the top has icons that repeat themselves and overlap. I attached an image of what I'm referring to. She says this has been happening for over a month and sometimes when she goes to delete an image or two, she selects let's say 7 images and it asks to confirm to delete those 7, after she confirms it deletes ALL the images in that folder. WTF? She has lost a lot of images because of this. Her phone doesn't have an SD card.
Her phone has not been modified or rooted. In fact she is still paying it off at T-Mobile and has a few more months to go. Anyone know what the cause of of it is and how it can be rectified?

Looks like a combination of screen issues and software problems, would be better off exchanging it if you can.

She tried getting it exchange but said that she can't because she is not paying the $10 a month fee for that. Strangely enough, the phone recently received an over the air update for Android version 6.0.1 and the icons have changed. The home screen is still glitched though, but when you go to another menu such as settings, the notification bar at the top seems to fix itself and the icons no longer overlap. But the moment you go back to the home screen it's glitched again.
Would it be worth it to flash the stock rom myself back to the phone? If so, Is the orginal rom available? I've only messed around with my phone and my girlfriends, both of which are HTC Sensations, where I unlock the bootloader, flash the recovery, rooted them, ect...

Not entirely sure, it's worth a shot I guess. I don't have your model so I'm going to let someone else take over at this point

Has anyone else notice the 'dot bug' on the home screen?
if your on the main homescreen (screen 3), it should have 2 dots in each bottom corner indicating 2 screens to the right and 2 to the left.
if i go into an app from screen 5 and then exit the app by pressing the home button, it takes me to screen 3 however i have 4 dots on the bottom left - which is obv wrong!
I only noticed it after the new update (which i did manually)...i havent rooted.
Easy to reproduce, sounds like a simple bug and the developer of the activity needs a holiday
The same bug is affecting me - nice catch!
Same issue here, not so perfect phone now You'd think they'd test updates before rolling them out, saying that it is a minor thing but would be nice of them to sort it out as soon as possible and the Carrier | (pipe) issue too.
yeah i would think that they would catch something like that but i guess not. Some people are saying they are not experiencing the bug, mostly people that have received the update via OTA; then again others say they have. I still haven't updated figured i would wait for the OTA but i'm getting impatient..
Same here. Updated via OTA
I think everyone with the update has it. Doesn't bother me any; my screens are all different enough from each other that I can tell at a glance which one I'm on, so I never look at the dots.

Assume this requires root?
Did anyone just try pressing on one of the dots to switch screens, then going back? Mine had this when I first updated, but I did that, and haven't had it since (even after power down).

that doesn't solve it mikeybags, you'll see if you try it with an app on another screen, open the app from the other screen then hit home, you'll see the dots dont go back to ".." ".."
You don't even have to move screens or press the dots to fix this...
Just hold the background and move half-way as if you're changing screens and let go.
Fixed.
Why is this such a big deal?

yes sorry i was half asleep when i posted this and only afterwards realized this. well for all you rooted users that updated and are having this problem, there is your fix.
i have no idea how this has happened,
Used last yesterday to read the latest flash comic on the train,
Then went for a few drinks, home and today after getting up theres a line running across the screen close to the middle,
I gave the screen a couple of tap and the colour of the line changes, and after a few taps the line goes away then comes back while using the tab,
Currently running stock firmware without root...
Anyone have any ideas,
Have just contacted Samsung waiting for a reply...
I love this tab so it wont stop me from using but would live to know if its serious and in need of urgent repairs..
As there is still warranty valid, I would make use of it

I flashed PAC onto my Galaxy Note 10.1 just a few days ago when I ran across the PIE section in the settings, as I started toying with it I fell in love with how the nav bar was no longer hanging around the bottom all of the time, and I certainly liked PIE's interface better. However, ever since I started using the bottom 1/2 inch (interestingly about the size of the nav bar) hasn't been responsive to any touch input other than PIE. For example, if I was typing something, only the top of the spacebar would recognize a touch as a space, but the other, bottommost part would still operate if I swiped up to reveal PIE.
Is anyone aware of a fix to this problem, or is it just a tradeoff of having PIE, and this is just the way it is?
--John Galt from my GT-N8013
You can disable pie from the settings menu. You should also consider upgrading to 4.4 as JB is no longer receiving updates.
Well I know that I can disable PIE, but I want to know if the bottom of the screen not being functional is just something I have to deal with or if there is something that I can do about it.
I'm not aware of a 4.4 update for PAC for my device. I'm willing to try a nightly release, but I'm not sure how to tell what version a ROM is from the name of the .zip.
For example, what version is: pac_n8013-nightly-20140122.zip ? I can't anything except for "pac", "n8013" (my model no.), "nightly", and "2014".
The "0122" I'm not sure of.

You can move the pie trigger to the side of the screen to see if you get the full touch screen back...
0122 is the date of the nightly build. Up to 0128 is 4.3 and from 0303 will be PAC-4.4

Thank you for the clarification. I could be missing something, but there are no ROMs that have any release after 0128 (which I have now) for my device.
Seems like I'll have to wait for an update to roll around, but until then I'll keep playing with the settings and see if perhaps I have something not set properly.

Hybrid Properties
As I was thinking about the correlation between this problem and the nav bar, I realized that the nav bar was likely still active, but not visible because I clicked on the PIE fullscreen button in the quick settings. So I went to Hybrid Properties, clicked on interface, and set the "Nav. bar" slider to 0%, and clicked Apply. When that didn't work, I went back to that screen and found that the Nav. bar slider was all the way back at 100%. I've tried several times to get this to work, including adjusting the "Size" slider, clicking "Tablet UI" in the Launch screen and applying that, but nothing has stopped that slider from returning to it's default setting. Anyone know why this might be?
Almost every time I push the power button to turn the screen off and then unlock the phone again almost any app I'm in has been closed. I mean it can be literally lock the phone and unlock it right away and it takes me to my home screen instead of back to the app I was in. The app is still in my recents, but as soon as I unlock the phone it takes me to my home screen.
This is happening on my unlocked version directly from OnePlus. When I try it on my T-Mobile version it doesn't close the apps and unlocks right back where I left off. It also is working correctly on my Pixel 3 XL and the RAM management is currently absolute trash on that phone.
I'm using Nova Launcher on both phones, I have tried turning off battery optimization and advanced optimization and it still does the same thing. When I use the stock launcher this does not happen.
Anyone else seeing this or know how to fix it?

Thanks for the quick reply, it's really starting to annoy me and I'm running basically the same setup as you.
I've done everything short of a factory reset to try to fix it. I might have to do a factory reset when I have a little free time.

Thank you, well that helps me rule out that it has nothing to do with routing or bootloader unlocked. I was starting to think that might have had something to do with it because my T-Mobile version doesn't do this.

It doesn't always do it. I just did a test and the xda app was right there when I unlocked.
But it happened to me literally every time I locked the screen last night. Even for this short amount of time.

Same thing here it doesn't always do it but it doesn't have enough to be really annoying. I can't seem to find any Rhyme or Reason as to why it's doing it.
Edit: I just walked my dog for 10 minutes came back unlock my phone and it's still on this XDA page like it's supposed to be. SMH
Ok, so this has bothered me a lot as well and I have mentioned this and a few other issues in one of my earlier posts.
It's definitely a bug especially, as it does not happen everytime (only most of the times) and OnePlus has to fix it.
However, I do have a theory on why this happens. OnePlus has added a new feature (quick launch?) which let's you access app shortcuts when you press and hold the fingerprint scanner even after unlock. Now this overlay would presumably not work very well if you're inside an app.
So I think OnePlus takes you to the home page to prepare for this quick launch shortcut overlay display.
Obviously, this is a new feature and I believe needs some more development and bug fixing.
I would've hoped that at least turning the quick launch feature off would rid us of this problem, but sadly it doesn't.
Hopefully it's fixed soon.
can you guys check if you have my prob aswell?

I have a super annoying Problem when using Nova Launcher. My Dialer minimizes when i move my Phone away from my Ear. To reproduce: Open Dialer, minimize the Dialer, open again and make a Call, block the Sensor with your hand shortly. Looks like the Dialer crashes but it minimizes. For ending the Call i have to press the little icon in the Top Bar to maximize it first. Super annoying and with this Problem Nova Launcher is unusable. Somebody else with that Prob or someone have a suggetion to fix that?
I noticed the same problem, I thought I was just swing up to go back home before I hit the power button to turn off the screen out of habit and not realizing it. Glad to know I'm not crazy. I am stock from one plus but running Nova launcher.

I'm using the Google Dialer and not the stock one and I just tried it by covering the sensor and when I uncovered it the dialer was still there. But if I lock the screen and then unlock it it's gone.

Not my find but there's an update to the OnePlus launcher in the Play Store that once you update the issue with Nova goes away.
I updated from the Play Store and tried every single app on my phone and when I unlocked my phone they were still there no more going straight to the home screen.

Awesome find, thank you for posting this in the other thread and here. It fixed my issue.
This is great news! Thanks for pointing this out guys.
Thank god the launcher update fixed it!
Happy to find this topic! Thanks for the solution!
Hi, guys
Just bought the S10+ for 3 days. All good until today. It had 3 software updates and now after the second one I have the following issue -there is a white rectangle surrounding the text of the notification pannel when you swipe down to see it ( the one with wifi, mobile data , vibrate, bluetooth, portrait mode etc). I am not sure what it's called but I think you get it.
So basically I have the wifi icon for example but the text is not "wifi" in blue/white color and the black or white background but instead the text is surrounded by a white or black (if night mode is off) rectangle. Like a tag or something. It is annoying that I can't post a picture of it.
Is this a glitch or something ? It really annoys me.
Thanks !
I'm not familiar with that glitch. The first thing to try is booting into recovery and wiping the system cache which will likely fix your issue.
If you are using a theme that could also be the culprit--unlike the theme stores on Xiaomi and Huawei phones Samsung isn't good about warning users when a theme might be out of date or incompatible.
The last thing to try is a complete factory reset of your phone which hopefully won't be necessary.
When doing a factory reset due to the type of issue you are describing you are much better off using the fresh start option in the phone setup screen rather than choosing to restore from a Google Cloud backup because the backup can also restore corrupted system data that is creating your issue so you end up restoring your problem along with your apps.
Fixed it.
It's a stupid setting in accessibility - > show button shapes.
Thanks though.

I've never even heard of that setting but it's good you were able to fix it.
Before the S10+ I haven't owned a Samsung phone in quite a while but I'm definitely not a fan of One UI. Samsung baked in way too much useless garbage.
