Upgrading ancient 4.3--->5.0 OF1 questions - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
i've been out of the loop for ages, and still rocking the ancient 4.3 rooted "root-de-la-vega" version
My questions are thus:
1- will updating to 5.0 OF1 via keys even work? or am i risking a brick/other fudge-up?
2- if the above is not supposed to work, what's the best way to go about this?
3- is it possible to use the wifi hotspot on the new OF1 build after rooting? i'm not a verizon client.
I searched the forums a lot, doesn't seem like anybody stayed on 4.3 for so long he'll have to do 4.3-->5 as well
Any answer is much appreciated. thanks

I can't tell you anything about Kies, sorry.
I unlocked my bootloader on 4.3 / MJ7 using the same binary from the bootloader unlock thread (@donc113's from post #318 or something) . It would probably work for you on your current ROM as well.
I kept the MJ7 firmware ( still have it! )
The M* series (MI9/MJ7/MJE) firmware will not boot the N* (4.4) or O* (5.0) stock ROMs. Similarly you have to use the TWRP -4.3 variant in the custom recovery for the same reasons if you retain M* series booting firmware.
Curiously, however MJ7 bootloader will boot the CM13 custom ROM, as will later bootloaders. I suppose that means the later bootloaders are backwards-compatible to the older DTB (Device Tree) meta data format used in booting 4.3 ROM kernels.
I am a VZW subscriber, so I don't know if there are issues using the CM13 ROM on other carriers.
good luck
PS CM13 has WiFi and USB hotspot/tethering built in. I would be using that ROM right now were it not for some GPS issues - the whole reason I stayed on rooted MJ7 for so long was because of the hot spot bug/"feature".

this is working fine.
I noticed, today, using a software to have infos about my device, and 3G signal (Signal network info) that my device has this bootloader :
I9505XXUBMGA.
it is too old (I bought it in May 2013, so the modem, boot loader etc... have more than 6 month now...
how can I update it ? where to find boot loader ? I find easily modem, but no boot loader.

Why in the world would you want to "update" your bootloader?
I think it would be worth your while to read up on bootloaders
before you end up with a shiny brick with a 5 inch black screen.
Here is a good link to find out what a bootloader is and does:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Bootloader
Bootloaders have nothing to do with the speed or the stability of the phone.
Good luck!

lol this is the first time I see someone wants a newer bootloader.. As the post above me, a newer bootloader won't make your phone faster ..Anyway you already have the latest knox one

hi,
no I don't look for speed.
I was thinking that it could have some impact when trying some ROM, like :
kitkat GE Rom which are not stable, even if the rom comes i9505GE official Google edition rom which should be stable...
I was thinking that the difference between a i9505 and a i9505GE could be the bootloader, as the hardware is exactly the same...
thanks
Olivier
You are on a pre KNOX boot loader so stick with it. No need to update. Updating to a KNOX boot loader will give you a knox flag once it a tripped there's no going back. With a KNOX boot loader you can not downgrade as well. I'm on the old boot loader and custom 4.3 roms work well.

Mobile ODIN is the reason
Hello,
I have a MJ5 bootloader and to use the app Mobile ODIN I am advised to use the MJ7 version or I might soft-brick my phone...
I already have the KNOX flag at 1, so I suppose I should not worry about that... And I can't find anywhere (I did search the forum and google) how to do this.
Before anyone asks.. I have and work with OS X and I am aware of Heimdall (ODIN replacement for macs). But I tried using it and it did not recognize my phone to download my .PIT file. Also, its quite confusing about heimdall packages instead of normal files..
So, Im going for Mobile ODIN which seems to be the easiest way to ODIN.
Can anyone help? Should I worry about anything else than KNOX flag that I am not aware of when changing the bootloader?
Thanks in advance.

Update and keep old bootloader

I'm currently on 4.3 with the original bootloader. Is it possible to update to an official touchwiz 4.4 or 5.0 rom and keep the old bootloader?
If no, are there any touchwiz roms modified to work with the old bootloader?
Does CM12 work well with the 4.3 bootloader?
Edit: I have the n9005 (n900x LDU to be exact) version of the Note 3.
You need to post in Q&A section mate but to answer your question no. Bootloaders are compatible with past versions of Android but not future versions. For example: 4.4 Bootloader is compatible witn Android 4.3 but not Android 5.0. Android 5.0 Bootloader is compatible with 4.4 + 4.3 but not Android 6.0 (if it even exists, but as i said, for example) hope this makes sense
P.S welcome to XDA
Are you sure about the backward compatibility? I read in multiple places that people couldn't downgrade to 4.3 because the new bootloader doesn't work with 4.3.
The 5.0 bootloader works fine with 4.3. I've seen and done it myself (I'm a flashaholic).
Do you have the n9005, n900 or some other version of the phone?
I have the N9005 mate.
So these threads are a bunch of baloney?

Yes....i will post screenshots of me on 4.3 if you like?
I believe you, I'm just surprised as there are lots of threads that claim otherwise. Can you post exact steps of how you upgrade and downgrade? Maybe there's something special about the way you do it as others have obviously had problems with downgrading.
Also, can you respond to my other two questions (CM12 and touchwiz based roms that work with the old bootloader)?
Ideally I'd like not to upgrade my bootloader as this n900x (demo unit) that I have reportedly has major issues on new bootloaders (most probably because no new versions of the modem exist).

There is no special way of downgrading or upgrading, its just the normal way.
PS: One thing I should have mentioned, if you wipe before upgrading and all that (that's what I do) and wipe via TWRP and then reboot the phone after wiping via TWRP then the bootloader won't upgrade, at least that's what I think, cause that's what happened to me while I was upgrading from KK to LP, the bootloader wasn't updated because I rebooted the phone from TWRP. So to avoid that you need to turn off the phone (if you are in recovery) and then enter download mode by Vol Down and Power, once again, rebooting to download mode from recovery won't upgrade the bootloader, you need to manually do that by powering off the phone and so on.
Trough Odin, not through a custom recovery? What about my other two questions (CM12 and touchwiz based roms that work with the old bootloader).
No idea about CM12, not in that sort of stuffs.
You will flash the ROM via Odin yes, but my previous comment is only valid if you wipe your phone via recovery before upgrading. I always wipe my phone before upgrading (and this was a big platform upgrade from KK to LP), thus thought about mentioning that.
How can you tell which bootloader you have? I wiped everything via TWRP and then used odin to flash a 5.0 rom.
Not sure what bootloader I have though..
That's the thing, I don't know that either! I guess when you enter bootloader there might be a mention of it, or not, not sure really.
I wouldn't have understood that anyway if I didn't have the WiFi password reset problem with LP. A user then pointed out that my bootloader wasn't updated and thus the WiFi problem was happening, and he was right.

Cm12 works with any bootloader
I know it does. How well it works on the 4.3 bootloader was the question.

[Q] Koodo S4 upgrade questions

Hello Gurus,
I have the Canadian S4 (I337MVLUFNI2) running stock 4.4.2. I've just downloaded the Lollipop upgrade from Koodo but did not install.
I'm looking to root and flash CM12 or other ROMs, but I'd like to try Lollipop first.
Few questions about the upgrade:
-Will I be able to root the device after upgrading to Lollipop?
-If I don't like Lolipop, can I revert to my 4.2.2 using my Kies back up ?
-If I want to be able to evert, do you recommend that I root my 4.4.2 and take a nandroid back up first ?
(Battery life is important for me. If the upgrade turns out to be disastrous as some online reports indicates, I'd like to be able to go back to 4.2.2).
-What is the recommended way to root and install recovery for my device ?
Thanks to all..
Do what I did.
Backup all files to PC
Flash lollipop firmware through Odin which you can download from sammobile
Reboot into recovery and wipe data and cache(this will erase everything on phone)
Boot up phone and setup accounts
Then once finished flash this through odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293800
Flash twrp through odin
Boot up and copy files back to phone
Reboot into recovery and flash cm12 or whatever you want
So far, there is not a root method for Lollipop on the S4, nor does Xposed work for it yet (lots of issues with the way Samsung implemented ART to Touchwiz).
There is a keep root method in the S4 general Forum, which is just a way to keep root throughout the install of lollipop if you are already rooted on the current ROM you're upgrading from. I'm on my phone though so apologies for not linking it.
I'm not certain if a kies backup will restore after the upgrade, but even though the keep root method removes safestrap functionality, there is a way to get it working temporarily, which may provide some hope.
Seeing as you're using a Canadian model I don't think you need safestrap, and seeing as I do (AT&T model), I can't tell you how other recoveries will handle the situation.

Hey Zehlek, I'm coming from CM11 (details below). I'm trying to move to CM12 because CM11 is doing strange things with my GPS. Which version would you recommend that is stable for the SGH-I337M? I read the CM12 dev page, but I'm a little nervous about the whole "editing scripts" part of the process.
Current Software -
SGH-I337M

L720 Upgrading Modem and Android to Unlock Features

Current device:
L720, rooted android 4.2.2, baseband MF9, kernel kt-sgs4-08-09-2013, rom Negalite-WondeROM-r52.
What's up guys, I am just looking to upgrade to a newer android version and newer rom. When I've tried to update, I either usually lose data coverage or lose the ability to use the dialer. So my question is what kernel, modem, and rom version do I need to install to have access to the following features? -
Mostly, I just want to have my hotspot toggle on the pulldown menu (SQL editing hasn't worked for me), obviously native hotspot enabled, sound boosting mod, and to use emojis without installing an app that logs every key entry. I would also like to stay away from KNOX (even though I still don't fully understand what it does to the phones after being tripped?)
Do I need to unroot, let the updates come through OTA, then re-root and find a new rom for the android version?
Or do I do something like flash each android version by version until I'm all updated?
I've rooted and customized multiple phones with the help of xda, this is just the first time I haven't been able to solve my problem after many many tries at flashing. I am good with recovery, flashing, and odin, but I still don't totally understand differences in kernels, modems, and basebands.
I'd love a little help here too. Similar issues but on mf9 baseband and mk2 firmware, running SACs 4.3. I think twrp 2.6.3.
I'd love to know what I need to do to get my firmware updated and a working ROM installed. Please and thanks.
yall need to odin to at least the oldest version of the Android version you wish to move to. but first, you should know that the MF9 bootloader is a special one. it is one of the last Sprint bootloaders ever to not have a Knox trip.
this opens some opportunities for you -- upon updating via Odin, your phone would become a fresh knox 0x0 with valid warrantee (until your next root or TWRP) and also you could downgrade to the very first rom for the s4. I can't remember the fine details but I think it (MDC) was the only s4 rom that permitted some kind of CDMA editing or APN stuff. if interested you'll have to dig for whatever the perk was
if you want to update to jellybean 4.3, you'll need MJA* or MK2
*first bootloader on s4 both to prevent downgrading and include knox
for kitkat, odin NAE* or NG2**
*might permit downgrade to MK2
**notice! this is the final kitkat version! upgrading past here makes acquiring your MSL more difficult, so be sure to grab that first from any version NG2 or older and write it down. also, last s4 rom to (easily) UUIC unlock. it will stay unlocked
if you want lollipop 5.0.1 you'll need OD2* OH1** or OK3
*does not allow downgrade!
**some of the custom ROMs will require this version or newer.
I don't know if the s4 is one of them, but on some Sprint devices the APN settings are only (easily) accessible from roms with the XAS product code. factory default is SPR. you can change this with GalaxyTools (requires factory reset) or just odin the XAS version (might factory reset).
I know I might have created more questions than answered ...xda search & Google search are your best friends
edit: you can change your recovery to whatever you like, the only trick here is older recoveries don't like installing lollipop / marshmallow(CM13) ROMs -- I think TWRP 2.8 was the minimum? either way, just shoot straight for 3.0.2 there's nothing to lose.

galaxy s5 0F3 downgrade issue.

I have multiple s5 active phone one which had ne4 build installed and the one that my wife was using had been updated to the 0F3 build. I am new to android flashing and programming but had a tech background. Using odin I was able to downgrade the NE4 build to android 4.4.2 using the stock rom from Sam mobile which i was then able to root the phone. The problem is the phone with the 0F3 build. I am not able to downgrade it with the stock rom even after formatting. I have read where the reactivation lock could cause the auth. Failure when using odin. I have verified that block was unchecked and still the same problem. After more research I have read it is not possible to downgrade the system after upgraded to 0F3. So what I am wondering is there any roms out there that I could flash to the 0F3 build without issue? Is there a custom root able rom available? Thanks for any help I can get!! I'm stuck!
If you are not with one of the carriers that saddles you with a locked bootloader, then you should be able to downgrade.....
As far as i know, only 2 carriers are guilty of locked bootloaders......Verizon and AT&T......otherwise (Unless your carrier is a subsidiary of one of them) you should be able to downgrade.....
Have you tried flashing a pit file along with the firmware?
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
After doing more research that looks to be the problem both phones was bought from at&t at different times and have different builds. So the bootloader must be locked on the other phone. I was looking into the flash fire method but being that the phone is already on 5.0 and not rooted there is nothing I can currentry do to root it right? Since it won't let me flash a different rom even a downgraded 4.4.4 rom.
