Does anyone know where to get the latest rom from the original KIN run? The one that still includes the option for exchange email accounts?
I've tried google, and usually my googlefu is strong but it seems not with this. the latest build seems to be v1 build 2814.0
Also, from what I can see it would work, I'd just have to turn off the cloud stuff using the hidden menu afterwords... or am I wrong?
Thanks
This is actually one of the main problems. If we could get our hands on an actual rom from one of the KINs we would be in pretty good shape, and would be more likely to make progress.
Have you found any rom for a kin? If you have please let us know.
No, although I was only looking for an older rom build.
I'm probably going to call Verizon to try and get them (badger them) to give me an older ROM, since the phones are basically worthless to me without the Exchange email client... Unfortunately, when I looked up the Kin specs, all the sites I checked listed that feature.
Right now I'm hoping that I can either get an older rom on the phone (somehow) or that the newly announced HP Veer comes out on Verizon (also unlikely, since its Tech specs page only lists gsm and not cdma, etc).
I'll see what I can do about getting a ROM first though.
Well, I tried Verizon, and then Sharp.
After the hours on the phone, it appears that:
a.) Verizon could give me an older ROM, if I could somehow get ahold of the right person... since they reason they gave me for not doing it is "As the original equipment manufacturer, Sharp wouldn't let us do that."
b.) Sharp immediately says they have nothing to do with the phone after making it, and only Verizon can help me out.
So with that being a dead end, I can only see 2 options:
1.) Get the info from nvidia that lets us create roms for their tegra stuff (kin one is tegra as well, I believe) and then dump the current rom using their tools and modify it. I don't really think this will be possible, since I'm not an OEM, but I find it more likely than #2.
2.) Get ROM builds and tools from Microsoft. Given how... microsoft... Microsoft is, I really doubt this will be possible.
So, next week I will try #1 (calling them, if possible), followed by #2... but it really looks like its up to the people here to figure out how to dump the phone's current ROM. Given that it has a usb port (and people have gotten some access to the system), I believe its possible one way or another.
Seeing that our current attempts to do something good with the phone had no success yet, i must ask.
Are any news on this topic? I guess we can even just take the "tools" part or drivers, we can skip the rom things .
Maybe Conflipper can help us? It appears he was in the news digging through the original Kin, finding a possible foundation for an instant messenger.
www(dot)phonearena(dot)com/news/Instant-messaging-client-coming-to-the-Microsoft-KIN-handsets_id11919
(sorry add periods between - can't post outside links yet)
Maybe he knows something that might kick start the hacking process?

Sorry, been busy and only news I have on this front is depressing, so I didn't get around to updating quickly.
Can't get anything out of anyone, basically. nvidia wasn't helpful, microsoft wasn't helpful, verizon wasn't helpful, sharp wasn't helpful.
With Verizon, Microsoft, Sharp, it was more like a giant circle... each company would tell me that they couldn't help me, but the next company could, etc.
Calling nvidia just told me to fill out the developer application, but that didn't go anywhere.
It makes me sad because these phones would be awesome if we could actually customize and update them... although I guess there will eventually be replacements running android or something.
HP Veer (webOs) is nice, but it looks like it will be an ATT device, so...
I know the advantages of rooting a device. But I want to know what the disadvantages are there in specific to S7 Edge if I root the device.
So far I have rooted all the android devices but I'm a little hesitant to root the S7 edge. Suggestions are welcomed
1. Trip Knox
2. Void Warranty
3. Cannot use Samsung Pay
that's all! enjoy my root edge lolz
Samsung Pay is the only one that is stopping me at the mo. Although I am on the fence...
Knox will trip but if you are in the UK or some other countries that will not void your warranty anyway.

Just tripping knox really. No samsung pay if and when it ever comes to international devices. Tripping knox also tends to create a memory leak when flashing newer firmwares via ODIN which won't allow the phone to deep sleep. You wouldn't see this issue if you had never rooted. That said, developers have found ways around this bug within days of new firmware releases, so it's not a huge concern in my mind. (this was the case with both the S6 and Note5 when MM was first released)
Great thanks for the responses. What about OTA updates? Would we receive OTA updates if rooted, I do not think so. Heard that any changes made to the OS files would make the phone unflashable via ODIN as well is this true?
No OTA either but that is not something that I would find as a disadvantage tbh
agreed
i rooted mine the same day i got it, and haven't looked back
1. Trip Knox - pft, no great loss there lol
2. Void Warranty - oh well, i'm uk side, and couldn't give a toss anyway lol
3. Cannot use Samsung Pay - again, i'm uk side... it's not out here yet, and i wouldn't use it if it was lol
4. No OTA - in exchange for custom roms and customisation? not even a contest lol
1. No Samsung pay
2. Unencrypted internal storage (no one mentions this, kind of a big deal imo)
3. No Knox
4. Slower boot time
5. Random reboots
6. Memory usage and leaks
7. Incompatible or poorly tested xposed modules can cause a myriad of bugs.
8. Compromised warranty
9. No OTA updates

Not getting updates isn't a disadvantage? You must have some mental deficiency.

Well had you put a wink or smiley face after that comment then I would not have taken offence! Who are You to state that I have a mental deficiency?!?
In all honesty, you are in the wrong forum if you find all the above a disadvantage, this whole place is pretty much about modding our phones!!!
Also, after years of using custom roms I actually find the opposite to most of your points when compared to carrier roms. The devs on here are extremely talented and tend to improve speed, stability, reliability and fix memory leaks and or other issues on delivered roms way before the carriers actually get round to fixing them.
I get the updates, but I get them by either side-loading or baked into custom roms!

I like modding and I'm probably going to root my edge at some point. I am just sick and tired of the misinformation and bias that is spread around here. You know not getting OTA updates is a disadvantage, don't play dumb. People should know ALL of the advantages and disadvantages of rooting and this community seems incapable of doing that (looking at root objectively and factually not as a gift from the android exploit gods).

My last word to you on the subject... I yet again beg to differ, I have found that OTA updates can actually cause more problems than they solve, these updates are generally sent out by the carriers to fix specific things but they do not spend enough time regression testing and inevitably end up causing other issues or forcing people to factory reset etc...
Please don't bother replying with any further insults, you are really not helping yourself!

i think you're the one who is deficient in these points. first, i don't know who's custom rom you have been using, but custom rom's are faster, not slower. they boot faster, and do almost every other task faster than the stock. why do you think everyone uses them? why do you think people are willing to forego their warranty to use them? BECAUSE THEY ARE BETTER. knox is a problem, NOT a solution. memory leaks...? it seems as if you have NEVER USED A CUSTOM ROM, because you are taking about things that rarely exist. not with the good custom roms anyway. no one cares about ota's, when you can get custom roms, which are ten times better anyway. AND, whenever there is an ota, almost all of the dev's are going to port anything worth while into the new custom roms update. so, i think you are extremely short sighted here. screw the manufacturers, as they try to keep control of your device. you don't really own your device, they do. because they are the real ones controlling it. go join the flock, and start grazing...

You can still use Android Pay if you unroot, while you can't use Samsung Pay at all if you trip Knox. But, only difference is that you can use MST with Samsung Pay, which is really no big deal. But well, everyone got their priorities.
Okay so I have rooted my phone and I am not able to use my galaxy app now. This is required for redeeming the free vr. Any help or suggestions?
I'm rooted and I have no issues with galaxy app or samsung member. (THO on samsung member I am prompted when opened that I've altered my device or such that may cause issues they can't resolve, or something along those lines)

Every single custom ROM I have used so far (on my old phone) has had some kind of bug/problem things like the phone trying to deep sleep while I'm still listening to music, connection with my watch cutting out for no reason, more battery drain from Android OS or some other stuff I can't turn off. Etc.
The brute fact is, the engineers at Samsung are just as talented if not more, and they have way more resources to do what they do. The only difference being they take more consideration for the general user where as devs here are only worried about the hard core geeks who will actually go through the trouble of flashing a custom ROM.
And no, there is no way custom ROMs can be more secure or reliable than stock. They may be faster, true, and have more geek features even I don't use like busybox or whatever, but normal people don't really care about that.
Also, most devs have a terrible sense of design, just the icons of the extra apps they introduce are horrible to look at. Sure you can download an icon pack and so on, but man! Do I get to have time to do anything else other than fiddle around with my phone?

yes, you've obviously made some very poor choices with the custom roms you have experienced. because not only me, but thousands of others write in on alllllllll of these threads about different custom roms, and the consensus is that these rom's are better than stock, in almost every way. and one fact you seem oblivious to, is that those engineers of samsung are constrained to the wishes of samsung, which is rarely in the favor of the user, but always in the favor of samsung. the favor of almost any titan company on the planet, is almost always at the detriment of the consumer. they are mutually exclusive. the private dev's can work FOR THE PEOPLE, and not for the mega corporation, and that is why they make much better roms. the FACT is that mega corp's like samsung, put apps on your device which KEEP IT FROM COMPLETELY going into deep sleep, because other companies pay them to. companies which want their sw front and center in all you do, whether you do or not. and yes, trhe dev's can make better security, more efficient i/o pathways, and an overall nicer experience, because they are not hampered with the requirements of all those paying corps. finally, you might be surprised at the size of the so called "hard core geeks" compared to the "normal users". it's probably different than you think. in any case, for many years i have bought new phones, used them as stock for a month or so, and ultimately always root them, because i prefer to actually own my device, instead of the manufacturer. you have little control over what happens on your phone if you are not rooted. they can force any update on you, and can change anything they will to. but if you are rooted, they have very little power over your device, and you have almost total control over it. after paying that much money for something, why be a bystander? why allow the large corporation dictate to your what happens on your own device? you are just a sheep in the flock. you might as well be on a CRapple device.

Consensus of random people don't mean anything, I only believe in scientific studies and simple logic.
I have yet to see a scientific comparison show custom ROMs being faster or more battery efficient in any way. Personally I don't see a difference so there is no reason for me to believe that there is.
But I have experienced bugs and instabilities in almost all the custom ROMs I've used. And no it makes no sense to say that I have poor choice because poorly chosen custom ROMs are still custom ROMs, at the very least it shows that there are bad apples.
Do I hate bloatware? absolutely, it's been the reason I have rooted my devices. But I also know deleting them doesn't really do much other than freeing up storage space. I see no difference in battery life. Again, don't tell me that it does, I won't believe you. Show me a scientific comparison, with two identical phones one rooted one not rooted going through the identical battery life test.
L9Hello guys and thanks for having me in your forums. This is my first post, I'm a big fan but I never registered, just lurked and read posts lol.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge J327P from Virgin US, it's rooted using the method listed on this forum for it with TWRP and supersu, but I'd like to kill the bloatware, stop mother fuc*ing Google from always running location services stuff(I'll post screen shots) in running services under developer options, increase my battery life and generally soup up my phone a bit with cool stuff. I'm not some bad ass Hax3r elite script kiddy but the pentest apps have always fascinated me and I've got a few installed and they're helping me learn this old dog a few new things. but I'd also like some more that are ofc not gonna be on app store so if you have any of those as suggestions pls hook me up. Also custom Roms, what's the deal? Do they have any for my phone and what can they help, where do I get and how do I install? Now that I'm rooted does anyone have any suggestions what to do next?
I used to work for Motorola and Nextel back in the day as an entry level wireless engineer straight out of the Army, but that was freaking years ago and I'm pretty out of the loop. That being said I'm not a completely moron and I'm pretty handy with hardware and software and I've written a few apps which are one app store.... But I did that with some help and as a project for online classes I take in my dotage to stay busy. I'm catching on pretty quick here though and i think my experiences and schooling and what not could be a good asset to the underground communities if I take the time to learn.... And Also... well mostly...because Ii really like mobiles and wireless **** fascinates me so hook me up. Feed me knowledge and where to look and learn and I'll donate the 200 or so dinosaur brick sized phones bi have in storage to your museum lol.
thanks guys,

Sorry that I have nothing to add on the ROM department, as I'm far less knowledge than yourself and about 98% of the individuals on here (the other 2%, smh. Just wow). The reason for me taking the time to reply is because A) I feel on the trying to teach an old dog new tricks; it takes me 20 minutes looking up what the meaning is of the lingo, then 40 minutes on how to implement it. Ironically I also worked for Sprint/Nextel but mine was the far less glamorous call center job. And totally random, & tbh with myself) none of my business, but I couldn't help but notice your mention about meds and regaurdless if it was one time thing, recent injury, old injury/condition, just whatever the situation look into (if your not familiar with it) mitragyna speciosa (kratom) its all natuarl plant, 100% legal (I think its 2 states miscategorized as a synthetic), its related to the coffee plant, and although its not perfect and not for everyone, its better than any pharmaceutical. There are quite a bit of Vets that are big advocates of this botanical. And sorry it's off topic (like 100%) but it changed my life, so I know it can for others too.

Don't take it personally, for the most part people here don't reply unless they have something constructive to add or say, it keeps the boards from getting flooded.
Since you're rooted I was going to suggest looking into porting, if you can get Lineage 14 running on your device (I have no idea what specs your model has off the top of my head to know what's possible for it) then it would give you a good jumpstart on porting 15 when that's released you could set up a race with the other J3 Devs and see who wins haha.
I seem to remember reading something about that phone too, iirc the article I read had it with a special case with Kevlar weave (which sounds badass on its own), I'll see if I can find any info on it again.
A lot of bloat can be eliminated by creating a nandroid backup (or TWRP if you have it) and taking it out that way, failing that titanium backup will let you get rid of a lot of bloat.
I just picked up a j327p for Sprint yesterday. I immediately wanted to flash Lineage onto it, but everything I'm seeing suggests that's not possible. (I wasn't able to do research before the purchase; it was an emergency replacement).
I found your post because I came here looking for the same information. I haven't flashed recovery onto my device yet, so I may try to return it to the store instead. It sounds like you got TWRP on there okay. Are you just stuck with the OS?
EDIT: there is this thread, which everyone in the universe was probably aware of but me, it just took me a bit to locate it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nt/wip-custom-rom-j3-emerge-sm-j327p-t3634206

Hi, all!
I bought the Blade X Max from Cricket, as it's got 32GB internal storage, a bigger screen, and seems a very hip machine.
Since Cricket seems to have instructed the various vendors, LG, Alcatel, and now ZTE to not only just make it difficult to root, but near-impossible, at least for someone without extensive knowledge as an Android dev, it's an annoyance...
There are legit, non-bootleg apps for which I spent good money (Titanium, Apps2SD Pro, FlashFire and others), which require root... Unlocking codes tend to be expensive, and the sites that offer them seem more spam-generators than anything else, and the Dr.Fone Root tool doesn't seem to even know the device exists, and, it's as yet not on their supported list, that I can see.
The device was released a month ago, so I'm not expecting immediate miracles, but wondering if anyone else owns the device, and if anyone with the dev chops would be interested in exploring the possibility.
Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
I own the ZTE Blade X Max as well, I havent tried root or anything else yet, I was a little surprised though when searching through XDA and this thread was all I found in relation to the ZTE Blade X Max.

Well, since the device has only been around a few months, it's understandable that not a lot of the devs have access to one, but, yeah... All over the web, it's referred to as a carrier-branded phone, and people seem to not want to fiddle with it...
I don't need a custom ROM, but there are legit apps that I bought from the Play Store, and they require root...
I blame Cricket for being paranoid that someone would dare to customize her/his phone and tweak it... Times past, Cricket made it difficult to root a phone, but the LG G-Stylo was pretty much unrootable... I have a few paperweights of that model in my storage... The Idol 3 was able to be rooted, the 6055U Idol 4, not so much... and now this one... It seems that Cricket is trying to have the various manufacturers leave some things out of their flavors of Android, so that even someone who reasonably is willing to take the risk is sh!t out of luck... <sigh>
Yeah Cricket has been making it real hard to root any of their phones. I also have the Stylo 2, and they had lg remove the entire bootloader and stock recovery, how the hell that was possible is beyond me. Get used to this trend in Android, it's not just Cricket, allot of flagships are doing what they can to get rid of the ability to root, cause if we root we have control not them, and the manufacturers are making way to much in terms of ad revenue to allow us to have total control. My Blade X Max will sometimes randomly download apps and games without my permission, that's how they ( manufacturers ) make the money they do, we are basically walking billboards for them. So unless enough people get together and complain about the blatent abuse of the GPL Linux has laid out, it will never change, open source my ass, try getting the real source code for this phone, won't happen. I downloaded the source for the max x 2 and dug into the files, wasn't even the full code, and had junk files from dead devices. The Android world is not what it's supposed to be, get used to it.

Indeed...
Next time around, going to buy a pre-unlocked device (hell, even our local Walmart Super-aircraft hangar sells 'em), and just have the device ported over... if the vendor (Cricket, Metro, whomever) won't do it, they don't need my business... I'm a write-off from years back with Verizon, and, although my credit rating is much better these days, I worked for a Sprint call-center, and they sucketh verily and forsooth, and I don't know much about AT&T proper, or many other vendors...
But there are some vendors that are generally pretty hip, if a bit expensive, and I'm looking into seeing if, even if this is a vendor-branded device, there's a way, or just a straight-up trade for a device I can work with... Cricket's Android Nougat flavor is buggy as hell, and this is just kinda silly.
<sigh>
What the hell...
"Oh, Brave new world that hath such people in it.."
Wow are you serious? No root method? I'm going to have to sell this phone? WTF I just liked it.

Well, apparently the bootloader's crippled, as Cricket seems to have insisted things be removed from ZTE's source code...
But, I'm wondering (though I might just be talking out my butt), if the code module could be extracted from ZMax Pro, as that's apparently its non-Cricket branded twin...
My coding chops are limited to old XBASE and a bit of Delphi/FPC, so I'm not the guy to do it, but am I in the ballpark with my idea?
Never really messed with the bootloader. I've always been developing from code tho. Haven't tinkled too much in about a year but need a laptop power cord before I can try anything. Bootloader isn't always a root blocker. It's more of a custom rom blocker if memory hasn't been affected by times changing

Well, again, my chops are decades old, and tend to involve xBASE and Delphi coding, and I know very little about C/C++ and Java, and plead ignorance of what Cricket has insisted on having crippled in the source, and I lean on the expertise of devs here and elsewhere for that reason...
Just that it's one helluva device, or would be if it could be at least rooted.... I just don't know how...

Facts!
That's what the kids say today, lol. It's a beauty. Had to get mine swapped out for another due to the fingerprint reader and camera being intermittent between reboots. Not much I can say wrong about this device. Waiting on the key to the mailbox for my laptop charger still. Can't promise anything yet but I'm hopeful that our resources will get us started, even if it's just a long list of what doesn't work. Lmfao

First off they can't remove the bootloader as android WON'T boot without it, and recovery is needed for factory resets. Cricket has never been helpful about supporting their phones, but of you do a search you can find out how to get into the recovery. (And it's the ZTE Blade ZMax, not X Max, X Max is just crickets version of the Blade ZMax)
To get into recovery you can go to this link for instructions

Have always been able to get into the stock recovery, and the download mode... those are not the issues, friend....
Whatever Cricket specified be done to their stock ROM by ZTE, we're blocked from doing those things that would enable us to actually use legit apps that we paid real money for.
I don't care about any sort of custom ROM, as these days, I really don't have the time to **** with it... But I've been an Android user for years... I've no problem rooting a device, given a workable method, and at least nutshell instructions, and doing a few things, as a user... As long as there is a way to get back to Square 1, should I screw up, I'm not afraid to explore, and, again, I believe in supporting good developers... If an app does what I want it to, I buy it, as long as it doesn't break the bank... in that case, I uninstall and find something better or cheaper...
But Cricket, in their either paranoia, or control freak attitude has been progressively making their devices less and less possible to do what we bought them for, unless we happen to be Cricket employees, sworn to secrecy regarding those codes beneath and behind the *# ones that really don't do much, at least not the ones we need to use, such as the menu option for "unlock" which doesn't without other input...

When I originally started the thread, yep... I know the thing's not been out long... like since May (and I know crap all about the "Z" model used by other vendors... Obviously there's a drastic difference in the firmware, though...)...
Given time, I'm certain someone will work it out... There's a gentleman on another thread that seems to be working on it, and I'm going under the thing of "no news is good news"
I've no doubt there's a way... I did a short stint at a call-center for Sprint, and there are always ways... It's a matter of having the right set of input codes, to get to the means to do the real deal...
I really dig the phone, although Cricket's flavor of Nougat isn't the most stable in the world... but, with the legal and legit apps I bought and continue to support, that's less of an issue.
It's frustrating when a company knows what a pain in the ass it is without allowing the user to administer it as really needs be... and they still refuse to permit it... I get that turning it into a paperweight can get tedious, but, given the means to get it back to factory standard in a reasonably simple way without sending it in, or buying another is just what I would see as normal... It's my own fault if I haven't backed up my data, but, if I somehow hose the firmware, just give me a means to get back to the start... It worked with their edition of the the Alcatel Idol 3... the Idol 4 (6055U)... I just gave the hell up.

Well, for damned sure I'm sick of Cricket's control freak practice...
But it seems there are too many vendors that undercut legitimate developers whose products require root access...
I don't really need a custom ROM, but I bought Apps2SD Pro, Titanium and some others because I found them to be well-written, well-designed, and they did what I needed them for... But, since I can't root this otherwise pretty cool device, I've basically wasted my $$... I'll get another device at some time, preferably from a vendor that is less paranoid about users actually using their devices to their potential, but for right now?
This is one of the most stupid situations I've found myself... A device that is capable of being a laptop replacement, but the vendor only insists on our using them as they dictate...
So, is disgust an applicable word?
... mind you, not at those among us who were suckered into buying a hip but crippled device.
(although I've the idea that those who actually work for Cricket but are sworn to secrecy by potential lawsuits and loss of employment actually have an idea as to whatever *# commands actually go deep enough to do what's needed)
But I have no issues with those such as I that found a really hip little machine, yet have found ourselves locked away from its potential...
My issues are with the control-freak assholes that set the policies for the companies we pay entirely too much to remain in necessary communication.
I am just wondering what you guys(or girls) favourite custom ROMs are for the Perry xt1765 and why?
Or do you prefer stock and why?
I'm currently running Resurrection Remix and I do really like the look and all the customization and the smooth and snappiness of the ROM overall, but I made several mistakes during the install and can't get it unencrypted.
So I was planning on reinstalling RR but the only other ROM I've used is the stock ROM.
So basically, I'm wondering if there's something better for me or more my style.
I just don't have the time or patience to read the info about all the ROMs and install them for a few days to test them out.
Once again, when giving your opinion, please go into detail about WHY you like that ROM so much.
Thanks in advance

My preference for virtually every Android gizmo that I own/owned (dozens) is stock, xposed framework (if supported), and a few essential modules. Why be that you may ask? First - I only nab devices that have near AOSP stock rom or a well established stand-in. An unlockable bootloader is absolute table stakes; have no interest in fighting with vendor imposed restrictions. Then there's stability and functionality. Typically everything just works with stock. I'm not into perpetual beta testing everyday commodities. Life is too short to be doinking around with ROM idiosyncrasies and developers who are unable (or insufficiently skilled) to adapt generic ROMs for specific hardware. Might sound crass but reflects pragmatic priorities and limited discretionary time. I prefer to use my gizmos, not manage them.
tl;dr: pick your poison wisely.

First off, thanks for your thorough and well thought answer. I actually know this about you from browsing other threads. Secondly, I'm curious what you consider to be essential Xposed modules? I have Xposed installed but find it hard to pick through and find the gems in the largely useless (to me at least) download section. Been experimenting with different custom rooms and while I still really like the RR one, I'm starting to feel like I may be happier in stock as well, maybe just a debloated one. So although I didn't intend this with my OP, I'm interested what you or anyone considers to be essential modules on Xposed or even Magisk. Thanks for your opinion

I like to keep things simple and functional; reliability is a top priority. I also demand full control over my gizmo's while rarely using those capabilities. Could care less about theming and other eye candy.
My essentials:
- AOSP based ROM
- TWRP
- Root manager (SuperSU or Magisk)
- Kernel manager (typically EX)
- Nova launcher
- Xposed framework w/gravitybox and edge
- Greenify w/xposed (used sparingly)
- SD Maid
- Adguard
Of course I have dozens of high quality apps that are universal along with a handful that are device specific. The only Magisk modules I use are those that are absolutely necessary for device compatibility. I do use other Xposed modules (eg: Wifi password; OwnOrientation) but typically only where needed.

Yes I see the benefit of this.
I'm starting to agree more and more.
You get the stabability of the stock rom with the customization of a custom rom with gravitybox.
I personally dislike most pie and edge type apps and my preferred launcher is adw EX but besides that I can really see your point.

Honestly, none of the nougat roms are great.
Lineage, Dot, RR all suffer from serious SD failures and crashes because of the USB bug when you plug it into the computer.
All the nougat roms, including stock, have a real serious problem with calls and texts coming through. I've tried ALL the roms and even made the XT1765 stock rom, and my phone just will not ring every time someone calls it. It goes into a weird sleep and just won't shake itself out unless i make a call/text.
Hold out for Oreo.

Have two E4s in the family associated with Verizon. One totally stock; not rooted/unlocked; routinely takes OTAs. Other is BL unlocked, rooted, running stock 7.1 ROM from late 2017. Neither exhibit the symptoms you describe. Actually, quite the opposite. Rock solid performers.
Why would you think Oreo is going to solve your problems which are likely the result of heavy tinkering and incomplete restoration attempts?

When you plug the phone into the computer via USB, you have to fight to get it to accept if you're doing transfers. While you can drag and drop files to your device via PC, you cannot delete anything on the phone via PC or transfer anything from device to PC. That is a SERIOUS BUG that creates the hassle of taking the battery out to retrieve the SD card to put it into a SD adapter and into the slot if your pc has it. Not a dealbreaker, but terribly inconvenient on the model since you have to take the battery out every time.

Have 2 E4s in the family associated with MetroPCS. Now we're over to TMobile, devices are unlocked straight from Metro. Both are rooted/bootloader unlocked. Only one took that March OTA (the significant other's) and it was a ***** undoing the damage on their phone that caused with the root.
Since I unlocked the bootloaders on these variants, stock or custom OS we miss phone calls. It does weird things where text messages will not come in unless you send one out first. It also will not ring once its sleep for so long; I literally have to make a phone call and "activate it" to get it ringing. Many people over the last 2-3 months keep telling me they've called and it DOESN'T RING on their end. I've also called folks and heard no ringing.
You CANNOT compare the Verizon variant to any other since you can't do squat with it but maybe root. Also, verizon always seem to have the better phones that hold up NO MATTER WHAT. Hard price to pay when you can't really do nothing with it.
Metro's variant has been a pain in the ass since day 1. And from what I've seen on here so have the Sprint ones. I don't like stock on this phone at all, even though I made a stock rom which was necessary to unlock it down the row, but this model sucks.

Maybe once Squid2 gets the device trees properly some of the isms will go away.
Also, if unlocking the bootloader is "heavy tinkering" then what are we doing on here? I do complete restoration attempts just fine, these and other problems started the minute the bootloader was unlocked and not before. And on the Metro variant, which is a POS, well, guess it was coming. Won't be getting another phone from them, tell you that much.

Not to be contrary but I'm on metropcs and I have literally none of these issues.
Not on RR and not on fully updated stock.
Not sure what happened with yours and maybe I just got lucky but the only thing that I couldn't do on fully up to date stock was install xposed.
I think that was because you need a patched boot IMG to get it running not sure.
Like I said before sometimes out of state texts take a while to come in but I'm talking 5 minutes later and not activated by a phone call like in your case.
My phone connects to my computers just fine with any old cable.
Can fastboot or transfer files to and from SD or internal and delete as well with no issues.
Maybe mines newer and they fixed it somehow because I've only had mine about six months but only started unlocking the bootloader a few weeks ago
Sounds like a serious PITA for you my friend I've been a loyal metropcs customer since they first came to my state and I've only had one problem phone from them so I'm sorry you've had such a crqp experience but believe me they either fixed the problem or like @Davey126 said its more likely something botched.
Do they have twrp flashed on them?
Are they encrypted or not?
Just curious
Ive never had to take my SD card out I can even transfer files in TWRP mount section...

You CANNOT compare the Verizon variant to any other since you can't do squat with it but maybe root. Also, verizon always seem to have the better phones that hold up NO MATTER WHAT. Hard price to pay when you can't really do nothing with it.

Did no such thing. Our E4s are associated with Verizon but not tied to that provider. As noted, one is bootloader unlocked with all of the associated magical powers (ooo!). Second remains locked and unrooted by choice; like 'dem OTAs. One does not have to purchase Verizon's crippled handsets to leverage their service. As for "better phones" (cough) your E4 hardware and mine are virtually identical. No more, no less.

Have no idea what transpired after unlocking but whatever happened your experiences don't mirror those of others.

A lot of Metro users on here reported about the transfer issues using custom roms in the approprpiate threads. So that isn't isolated. Maybe it's the batch of phones perhaps. I know running DotOS or RR specifically, the phone would run, but if I rebooted it would bootloop. Considering I rarely rebooted once on, that was something I noticed after having to pull the SD card out. But no big thing - Lineage was my go to OS anyway, and had no probs with that.
Yes, both phones have twrp flashed on them. No, not encrypted.
These aren't the first Metro phones I've had. Had the LGL70 before and the LGOptimusL9. No probs with those until years after having them. With the E4's, its been struggle since day one (which wasn't a total loss because I wound up writing guides and really studying this variant).

In fairness, I did get the phones from an authorized retailer and not corporate themselves. Maybe the phones were duds from the start, but what is so weird is that they came from 2 different metropcs' stores about a month apart from each other.
Can't say Davey. But if you read the Moto forums, the Metro folks got more than their fair share of probs. I've always loved a Moto phone, but the way Lenovo's been acting since acquiring them, they may be intentionally sending out lemons. I make my phone usable, but at the 3 month mark its time for another one and with the E4 being cut from Oreo because of the premature release of the E5, I don't know if I want to stick with Moto.
My Metro service sucked. Switched back to TMobile just from the last week of service being slowed to a crawl and being non-existent, even on my Iphone SE. After calling and complaining about it they said to take my business elsewhere, so I took it to their head company, who TMO says they don't get priority on service as a MVNO.
I was stuck with Verizon for 7 years after they bought PrimeCo. Never liked them - they locked my Moto Razr down so tough it was ridiculous and all I wanted was RINGTONES, custom RINGTONES on the thing. The one and only time I took an unlocked phone to them S4Mini, they said it wouldn't work on their network (which was crap). But their phones do hold up when cotton and corn won't, sadly.

I got to agree with you there....
Difficult phones provide the opportunity to learn which is always a good thing, albiet frustrating at times.
MetroPCS just announced a rebranding to Metro by TMobile.
I was under the impression they used the same exact network since when TMobile bought Metro they gave me a free phone because my old one would no longer get a signal when they moved to TMobile network....
At least that's how they described it to me at the store.
But you notice a difference on TMobile over Metro?
I personally have no problems here in NH, works all over my state and the LTE literally screams, i sometimes even get a better speed test then my Xfinity.
The only issue I've had so far on my current setup is I no longer am notified of voicemails and visual voicemail won't load....
Not sure why that is but I can still check voicemails manually...
Is this an issue anyone has run into?
If so, anyone have a solution?
Was considering stopping at Metro and seeing if they could help, maybe it needs another Metro app or something but they will just tell me not to tinker with my phone and refuse to help me.
They are pretty ignorant of anything not involving selling a phone or normal everyday setup.
For a corporate store, they sure lack in the support department....

I never purchase carrier aligned/branded phones. I seek out the multi-service variant (eg: XT1768), wait for a sale and then add the (unlocked/rooted) device to whatever service I happen to be using at the time. I have neither the time nor patience to dink around with balky firmware. I also expect to be the master of my devices with no restrictions beyond those imposed by the HW itself. That requirement largely determines what gizmos make the short list.

The "rebranding" is because Tmobile just bought Sprint, and so from what Tmobile said, they need to "reprioritize" their service from their top tier GSM/CDMA down to their MVNOs. I'm gonna guess this is to get ready for the conversion to 5G, since TMO confirmed to me their users get first dibs on service, then Sprint, then the MVNO's, since while they own Metro and Simple Mobile, they also "lease" airtime from them for service.
Don't get me started at how messy this is, considering Tmobile's computer systems are always down, and something as simple as getting a text to remind me to pay the bill or confirmation I've paid NEVER HAPPENS NOW.
There is a difference over service between Metro and TMO - depending on where you're at in the country you can definitely tell. Never got full LTE on Metro instead H+ barely, but never had problems with TMO in that department. Calls on that last week no matter what phone with Metro...service just would cease to exist.
I always got VM's on Metro but it wouldn't ring and go straight to VM but Visual Voicemail NEVER EVER WORKED, especially since I felt punished because I wouldn't update my data to unlimited.
And yes, their people are ignorant of everything, but then they can be considering they franchise. Their tech support, albeit good English speakers, sucks in comparison to TMO.
I had a situation with TMO where I called and paid the bill over the phone but their new system lost the payment even though it showed I paid, it didn't credit to the account. TMO automatically credited it for me and escalated to see what's wrong with the line. Metro would have NEVER done that. EVER. They wouldn't even credit me a SIM card when one I bought didn't work - made me pay 20 bucks for a replacement because their system couldn't process it. No thanks.

I didn't have that option when I got service. I hadn't had service for 8 years. Normally I get factory unlocked used phones from ebay as my personal play tinkering devices, but an actual phone to talk with, it was a budget buy and for 50 bucks and being Moto didn't feel it was going to be a clunker. Normally I have to scout and negotiate for the international phones I like, but as Samsung is proving, just because its not carrier aligned doesn't mean the manufacturer won't lock the phone down.

Never said that. A bit of upfront research makes all the difference. Been doing this for nearly 15 years; haven't bricked a handset yet and never experienced the boatload of woes others report. My phones just work.

Never said you said that. I was just pointing out the hard fact about Samsung locking down phones post S7. I been tinkering with phones since my Verizon branded Razr3. Ain't bricked a phone yet that couldn't be unbricked, lol. Had some I loved, had some I hated.
