I noticed on an ipod touch 4, that the quality was HD.
I wonder why the the quality on the Android devices play in HQ.
Side by side, makes me cry to see what I am lacking.
Just odd Google's major product plays better on a non-Google device.

I haven't used YoutTube App much BUT is there a point of playing it at higher quality?
480p = 640 x 480
480p = 704 x 480
our screens = 800 x 480
The benefit we get from 720p -> 480p is fairly minimum as you can see :/
Kinda making this up, but it might be because of the higher resolution display that the iphone and itouch have.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yea the iphone 4 and ipod touch 4 does have a higher resolution
But when you're watching on a 4" screen does it really matter? Not trying to watch a movie off Youtube after all.

que? are those resolutions the old crappy TV lines that werent really even 480i?
480p= 720x480
720p ( i assume you meant) = 1280x720
So if our phones are 800x480, 480p would be a better image than a scaled 720p, I seriously doubt our phones have the scalers of most modern TVs or Monitors. Native resolution is pretty much always better. (the widescreen images being letterboxed 480p like out of a dvd player).
Yeah they have amazing, almost unnecessary resolution for a 3.5" screen. Great for text readability, but so is SAMOLED
So anyways, if a 960x640 (apple) device is actually defaulting to scaling 720p down, theyre actually shooting themselves in the foot... unless their scaler is a faroudja... but with iOS its all about status, so having that little indicator on the screen say HD, even though the device falls a bit short of actually delivering, and degrading the image by scaling when it is not necessary on such a small device (any phone), it just makes us look better . Wow, im used to having these discussions relating to CRT projectors, not phones So yeah, stick to native resolution or smaller.
That said, if our TV out option worked, then 720p or whatever the best output is would be a good default, if that option were plugged in.

Regardless of the quality the iphone degrades, it still looks better...that's what he meant lol so if it looks better with a scaled down 720p, imagine regular 720p

I am not talking about the resolution of the screen. I realize the iphone/ipod have higher res than our phones, and that relates to the sharpness. But I am talking about the actual content quality is actually much higher definition, as it takes longer to buffer because of this aswell. I know the Android app is better overall vs IOS version.
I watch alot of HD [HQ on our phones] of car videos and such, and yes it bothers me that it is not the best it can.
Not anything worth whining about Would be cool if we had [3g/mobile] [HQ] and [HD] options.
This is XDA, maybe we can hack it lol
*Thanks for all the replies by the way
Duh, been too long since I dealt with SD... you are correct.
But as far as 'looks good', its subjective, and looking at my friends touch, I really dont think video is even close... text is awesome... but theres too many factors, such as were you using youtube apps, or the actual site? Really though, I guess it boils down that you really prefer resolution over color, clarity, etc of the samoleds.... But everyone has their preference, I still prefer my Barco 808s projector running 720p CRT at 120" over most 1080p TVs... But to be fair most TVs are crap...

Yeah I noticed that too, compared even to my old iphone 3gs I just watch youtube videos using Dolphin Hd browser with AdobeAir flash installed, quality is definetly better than on YouTube app.
What I'm more concerned with now is actually watching a youtube video and not watching 3 seconds of it, it skipping, and then having to start over because it fails to load completely
The old youtube app was horrible and would always do that but the new one has been awesome so far.
Yea that's true, the new is way better for reliability lol

download a program called tubemate from the market. its free.
when you use this app, you browse it just like you would youtube , but when you watch a video you have 2 options. watch or download. when you watch it steams in poor quality, however if you download you can play it back in HD. its pretty cool. you can even download 720p ( on 4g its pretty quick)
The reason I ask is because all of the tv shows I will watch on this will be in 720p. Movies will be at 1080p at best.
Will the super high resolution of the screen actually work against me, making my media look like crap?
For example, watching something in 480p format on even a 5 inch, 1080p phone screen looks like garbage.

Given that it has 2/3 the subpixels as a traditional RGB LCD, and 1/2 the RGB subpixels, I'm not quite convinced it's kill, let alone overkill.
Has the price been confirmed at $600? I was hoping the baseline wifi model would be $500.
Anyway one of my primary use cases is pdf reading so no I don't think the high PPI is overkill. For me it's one the prime selling points along with the S-pen.

If you think the current model is overkill on the resolution, then buy the outgoing model with 1280x800 resolution, you can get a 16GB WiFi for $449, but it should drop further.
Nah that's not overkill. The nexus 10 has the same resolution.

I have the Nexus 10 with the same resolution. It is not overkill. I had the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the higher resolution screen is a big step up. I wouldn't go back to a lower resolution tablet ... period. Video looks great on the screen and youtube looks great on the screen. The higher resolution is superb for reviewing photos, web, pdf's/reading ... every thing looks great on the screen. There is absolutely no downside to the screen resolution.

I think just above the "standard" for tablets around this size. To answer your question; no your movies will not look bad.
It doesn't matter that the video material is lower resolution than the screen resolution. What matters is that the higher the pixel density, the clearer the picture. Plus, the 720p material scales perfectly to the Note since it is exactly 4 times the resolution. Video on my Note compared to my 1280 x 800 Transformer Prime screen is like night and day.
It is definitely not overkill.
I think high resolution videos (720p and 1080p) look great on this tablet, 480p looks bad in comparison on any larger screen, especially if you're viewing at close distances even if it didn't have a high resolution. The best thing about the high resolution is reading text.
Good day guys, we all know nougat comes with feature to change resoultion. my question is it really improve gaming performance if i will change it to 1080 and help to get higher fps?
Depends. This feature is already available on Marshmallow anyway. GameTools allows you to adjust resolution of games. The only difference is that Nougat affects the entire phone on resolution change, not just games.

I'm creating a bounty for enabling native 2K or preferably 4K.
The resolution/dpi emulation still does nothing more than resize the xxhdpi resources (not even the xxxhdpi), so it still isn't as good quality as 2K displays on other phones.
Moreover, VR (the only real purpose for a 4K phone) is terrible. True, the screen door effect is gone, but at the cost of blurry less defined images same as a 1080p phone. Only Youtube and finally Netflix are able to use the 4K but other apps and games are unable to use the higher 2K resources and downloaded VR movies are fuzzy. Completely disappointing compared to my 2K phone. Also, with the emulated 2K or 4K, Daydream becomes tiny in the bottom center of the screen.
I believe the kernel controls the screen properties, but not sure if there was something to do with it in the ROM for this phone. While I'm sure I could figure it out with all of the easy handy guides, I don't really have time to do the research on how to do it myself. So, I'm creating this bounty.
I'll start with committing $50 to the person who releases the first stable one, but still donate to a second placer
If anyone else would like to sweeten this pot please post how much you would contribute.
I think it's a problem of native 4k apps, not the phone.
You can put it in 2,4k using adb commands, search here https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/themes/mod-change-default-resolution-to-4k-root-t3618843, but you need apps for that. I have Bobo VR Z5 and it's working perfect in 4k and in 1080p, but only without screen protector.

The adb command is just emulating 4K with the lower resolution resources as said in my top post.
This is how Daydream looks in emulated 4K https://drive.google.com/open?id=1i531VadSbzzu1Or1CMMvBYez5VFi_Mkp
I'm sure without the screen door effect you may feel you're getting 4K VR, but it actually 1080p.
For example, I take 4K 360° photos. the text on distant signs is readable on my 2K phone, but not on this XZP.
Awesome! Hoping this will attract devs to look into this.

It's pretty sharp. It's better in emulated 2k/4k, but good enough for 1080p. At least for me.
Also just to add, I noticed that if you use GMD Gesture Control and calibrate the screen, you'll see that the app reads the screen as 4k. (Even when on stock wm size)

That app probably reads the pixel size rather than the set resolution. AIDA64 also reads as 4K the first time, but later shows 1080x1920 or whatever emulated size you set.
When doing the Daydream fix, it also changes the screen from LCD to AMOLED.

true that but even when on emulated 4k you get just as good display as 1080p, its still even not as crisp as other 1080p but cant tell difference, still with emulated 4k just to look at "enhanced" 1080p sucks!
plus you lose more battery than native 2k phones! i bought the phone because of its screen and I cant enjoy 4k at all times, or at least in the UI or any other app that I want in 4k....
im disappointed i really wish there is a fix to get native 4k...

Excellent, and totally agree!
Now the bounty is up to $100.
Let's get more people. We can't be the only ones disappointed that Sony sold us a 4K phone *only in 2-3 apps that is actually locked at 1080p.
Could it be possible to just make other apps 4k by heavily editing them? Like the VR apps. If doing it system wide is too difficult then maybe editing apps might be easier.
I'm curious anyway, who can actually tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on this phone? You say 1080p looks better on other phones, so does the 4k look just as sharp as that 1080p? Also, how do we know Sony isn't just using the emulated 4k when it gets enabled? Not every photo in the album is 4k so how would it enable?
I did take a 1080p photo and a 4k photo and noticed a difference but I wasn't convinced. It didn't seem like a huge difference like it does against a TV/monitor at 4k. Especially on YouTube I cannot see the difference majorly when going from 1080p to 4k but can others? If 4k is difficult to make happen then maybe we could push 120hz at 1080p since it was said that the X series of devices have 120hz displays it's just disabled for some reason. The page needs translating but it shows 1080p at 120hz as an option. This was mentioned in a previous thread but I don't think anyone was interested in it. I think that this has a higher chance since this image exists.
Thats my thoughts about 4k on this device anyway. I think at this point 120hz might be a better option but that's just my opinion. 4k is great but it's only limited at the moment.
https://gazyekichi.com/2017/07/26/画面さくさく!「xperia-xz-premium」は「120hz」に対応している/
here is the thing, true that its very hard to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on such small screen, so I took screenshots of before and after 4k mod and placed them together on my 24 inch monitor side by side and still can barely tell the difference even on huge screen which proves that its not 4 times better quality so its really fake 4k!! only time i can realize the difference is when i zoom in on both pictures and see that some details are washed out and more "pixel" looking at 1080p while on 4k mod still manages to show more details but then again, such difference in sharpness and detail shouldnt be so hard to notice since on my monitor I can easilyyy tell a difference between 1080p and 4k gaming on my VSR (virtual supper resolution) even virtually on my screen modded 4k has a lot more difference that stock 1080p
while even modded 4k on this device can barely show a difference, so might as well change that in a native way I really cant wait for a fix
PS: running 1080p on 1080p screen looks better than running 1080p on 4K screen (if screens are same size) - proven.
so down scaling the 4K screen of this device to 1080 will make it look worse than other native 1080p screen which buggs me, the least they could have done is add an option like samsung did to just adjust the quality as you wish... I hope they add that in the next update
Yes I agree 1080p on a 4k screen does look worse. On most TVs it doesn't but on my Acer predator 28" 4k monitor it is very noticeable that 1080p looks like 720p when duplicating the screen next to my 1080p monitor. The desktop does look noticeably blurrier. However, 1080p content on the 4k monitor doesn't show a huge difference so I'm not sure what that's about only playing games and the desktop look bad at 1080p. Maybe the XZ1 could have been a better option but even still know that I have the second 4k mobile device on the planet and the only 4k HDR device is still cool. It's certified to be 4k so it can't possibly be a fake 4k it has to be really 4k else Sony would be lying and with all those TV experts I don't think it wouldn't be possible for them to do real 4k on a smartphone.
The screen using the emulated 4k is razor sharp. By far sharper than any other phone I've used including the note 8. Are you sure your not just mistaking the overly unrealistic saturation of a amoled screen compared to a LCD one? I dont mean that in a sarcastic way, i genuinely dont see any comparison between the two. I havnt used the phone for any VR stuff though so can't comment on that

you are right but im not comparing only with samsung, also with HTC and the previous version of xperia , the Z3
yes maybe on emulated 4k it has sharper screen but keep in mind that on 1080 is not as sharp as other 1080p, even on 2k it isnt only on 4k mode it is unbeatable which to add is emulated and not native
put phone on 2k battery dies so much faster than lets say samsung or HTC which both have same CPU GPU and almost same battery size, how is that? because the resolution is emulated, which forces GPU to resize source resolution of 1080p to make it in a fake way look like 4k instead of showing native 4k (which doesnt require such hard work from GPU as its showing real pixels instead of emulating fake pixels!) Which leads to less over heating and less battery consumption.
heck even on 1080p screen looks worse and still get worse battery life than other phones...
thats what bothers

not exactly but some other phones have better 1080p than the 1080p on this device, yes text and symbols maybe just as sharp its hard to tell but im talking about pictures (for example, in instagram, facebook. youtube thumbnails etc...) I once was on 4k mode and it was very hard to tell the difference between this phone and the Z3 and even some times the z3 showed more picture details in instagram and its only 1080p...
im not complaining about the screen though, its pretty decent and with 4k mod on it looks superb, im just saying sony has put some thing in a device that is useless and im trying to figure out why...
by useless i mean sony left us no option to use such settings, why dont they add the options of 1080-120hz or 4k? naive and not emulated! this bugs me
and yes it is 4k, just like youtube you dont have to watch on 4k settings, but you can see the option is there which means it supports it.
that means even if you dont have a 4k video in your video app or album app, the option is there that means if you ever have a 4k video on there the device will play it at its maximum resolution.
phones that dont support 4k will show that the video looks as sharp as 1080 instead of real 4k
Just curious. I recently updated my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to the Android Pie Resurrection rom and it plays Youtube vids in 1080p. So it's pretty nice.
u probably could, but the max resolution of the rn7 screen is still only 1080p, so there will be absolutely no difference in the experience of watching the content. you'd probably be wasting data downloading those extra pixels anyway.

Yea, that's a good point. I mean I only game on my desktop at 1080p. It's weird, if you have seen some of my posts, lately I have been having memory issues and the inability to understand things technically. I have been very heavily involved/online since 1985 in a dev sense but later in life more as an enthusiast. I don't know what's up. I'm only fifty and this is beginning to scare me. LOL
Thanks for the reply, NightRaven!
You could (especially with YouTube Vanced), but just like what NightRaven said, RN7 max resolution is 1080p so yea
