SM-A300H can't encrypt/can't restore backup in TWRP - Galaxy A3, A5, A7, A8, A9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

The topic should be SM-A300H can't encrypt. The other issue I solved.
So this is my issue: Encryption doesn't install correctly. I am using lollipop.
After choosing encrypt my device in settings/security it reboots, and shows the green android symbol, but nothing more happens. It shows the green android character for about 15 seconds, and then it boots as usual without encrypting the system.
I did a wipe with TWRP 3.0.2-1-ashyx because of the encryption problem, I wanted to try out with a fresh install and see if it was possible to encrypt the system but it did not make a difference.
I had rooted the device with Kingroot before the wipe, and kingroot was still installed even after doing the wipe which is odd. I tried uninstalling kingroot after the wipe as well but encrypt still didn't work, same problem.
So if there's a solution to this problem I would be grateful if you can help me.
Additional question: in case I cannot get encryption to work for some yet unknown reason, is there any 3rd party app I can try that will encrypt the entire system? I am not looking to encrypt single files, only full system encryption is good enough.

Flash the stock firmware then boot to recovery and factory reset.
You should then be able to encrypt.
Be forewarned that if you do encrypt you will no longer be able to mount data or storage in twrp.

Encrypting the phone resulted in a bootloop

Hi,
I'm on latest M version, latest TWRP, systemless root and Despair kernel 3.1.
When I first installed TWRP it couldn't decrypt partitions, so I had to install a kernel that disables force encrypt and factory reset the phone. So I ended up with un-encrypted partitions.
Now, TWRP supports decryption so I thought to encrypt the partitions. I went to Security -> Encrypt phone. This has been hanging on Android animation logo for 2.5hrs and no indication when it will finish.
Has anyone had a similar problem ?
What are my chances that it will complete gracefully and I wont need to factory reset the phone once again?

Chances are very low. I had the same issue and the only way I was able to fix it was to use the Google factory image and completely wipe the phone. Then boot it before flashing anything including TWRP. It encrypts in about a minute. Setup the phone, and then flash TWRP, modified root boot image if you want, and the corresponding SU zip.

Rooting not successful, even though it says it is

I have a US996 with an unlocked bootloader. I installed TWRP (although I still can't get it to decrypt data). I installed the latest SuperSU - and there were no errors (although without the ability to decrypt, TWRP couldn't wipe Dalvik/cache).
But after rebooting, Root Checker still says I'm not rooted.
What am I doing wrong?
Figured it out. Unless I disable the default encryption to formatting Data, installing SuperSU fails. Once I format Data, the install works properly.

How did you disable default encryption? I flashed twrp but in recovery it always says it had to decrypt in order to mount. I don't know the password twrp is asking for. Thanks
I followed the instructions and flashed TWRP. However it asks for a decrypt password when TWRP loads. How do I get past this? I formatted data twice and I am unable to flash SuperUser since I can't see any mount points. Its read only. Thank you to anyone that can help.
SOLVED:
Here is what I did wrong. After I ran all the dirtycow commands and got permissive root access I rebooted into TWRP. TWRP showed that the sdcard was encrypted. What I kept doing at this step was formatting the sd card which is correct, however I kept rebooting back into system. That was my mistake. I needed to immediately reboot back INTO TWRP RECOVERY instead. Once I rebooted directly back into TWRP recovery after the format I was able to view file system information move su.zip to sd card and install SuperUser.zip from TWRP.
When rooting my H990ds the guide said when TWRP asks for a password just press cancel. It should be the same for you too.

Sorry, the text you quoted from me should have read that disabled default encryption *by* formatting Data. Formatting Data is what takes care of it.

device encryption broken?

Hi!
Since last year I used CM14.1 and now decided to upgrade to LOS14.1.
After installing LOS14.1 via TWRP (after wiping data-cache-system) I tried to encrypt the phone, but after rebooting, it came up unencrypted.
Tried another round with clean installs of LOS14.1 and XenonHD7.1, both didn't work.
I already went back to OP original recovery and OxygenOS 3.5.8, even there the phone claims to encrypt, reboots and comes back after a few seconds unencrypted.
Any idea, what to change to get the OP2 encrypted?

Take a backup by connecting your phone in twrp to pc. It should show as a mass storage.
Then you need to go to wipe > format data.
This will completely wipe your data. Then copy your rom back to your phone in twrp and flash.
This should fix it.

[Q] Rooting Android Nougat on SM-G935F

Hey guys,
I've recently decided to try and root my device again (I had rooted Marshmallow previously, but went back to stock). Problem is: it won't work.
Here's what I tried so far:
1) Chainfire Autoroot (latest version for Nougat): device won't boot. It's stuck at the Samsung logo fading in and out. I let it sit for about 20 minutes, without any changes.
2) TWRP with Magisk v12 and samsung-antiroot-removal 2.4: it performs the process but says it couldn't mount /data. After reboot -> the same Samsung logo issue as with 1.
3) TWRP with no-verity-opt-encrypt 5.1 and SR3-SuperSU v2.79. Very same as with 2. I should note that I didn't wipe my device though.
Does anybody have an idea what's actually going on there? I would really like to root my device again. Preferrably without losing any data on it.
Cheers and thanks in advance,
Mark
Unfortunately the problem is without wiping data, the rooting process does not properly.
Rooting has to modify some files both in the boot loader and kernel. Some of your apps also have modified the boot loader for the apps to start properly.
when you try to root it causes a conflict with the existing modifications caused by the apps leading to a boot loop.
That is why it recommended you sync your phone prior to rooting, wipe data so that you have a clean boot image, root and then restore your app back up.
magisk v 13 has automated the rooting process during installation, it seems to work I done it several times already after updating my rom but I also clear data first.

Thank you. So it seems I will have to bite the bullet, wipe all data and start from scratch (more or less). Unfortunately every good backup solution requires root access. :/ But as far as I remember the Google Drive backup should work pretty well in regards to apps and their respective settings. *fingers crossed*

Encryption with Alternative ROMS

Hi, ive been wondering why all those roms folks put out are unable to encrypt the /data partition.
Any rom i tried so far is soft rebooting after i invoked the encryption option. No encyption happening at all.
And if i do it manually via adb shell > su # vdc cryptfs enablecrypto wipe password somethingpw
I sort of soft brick the device boot until i whipe the data partion via twrp.
Thereof i am wondering why its broken in the first place and if theres a chance if folk will fix this over time or any 3rd Party Roms will be stuck w/o a chance to encrypt personal data.

I was facing issues with my LOS 15.1, afaik unencrypted. Then I flash stock Oreo Feb using Mi Flash tool, with option 'clean all and lock'. Then I root it with magisk and flash LOS 15.1. The next thing I know, my phone is encrypted

Thank You, for confirming that Encryption works, i was almost at the verge of returning the phone.
Got it to work now.
....
The tldr of all i tested and messed around with is:
If you whipe Data trough twrp, with the special dialog where you have to type in YES. which folk reccomend to use to remove encryption,
will mean you brick the encryption and requires a re-flashing of the stock rom.
Secondly if you only go into advanced whipe, Art, System and data and then install a rom, it should say 'decrypted with default password'
Which is a dead give away that encryption might going to work just fine, rebooted into bootloader w/o into system, installed gapps pico, (eeh) and magisk, which also mentioned something about encryption as the log ran trough. Then rebooted into system, and now it says encrypted. And i can set up a boot pin/password before it fully boots. GREAT!
Soo.... If it says decrypted and won't encrypt, you have to flash stock, check its encrypted. Then install costum rom without removing encryption.
Once you removed it, its back to stock rom for new a /data setup/encryption.
