when one does a backup there are the normal options (system, data, EFS, firmware etc.) but I see System image option, what is this and how does it differ to the other options, and which options should one choose? thanks

There are some themes and apps that you have to do a wipe and clean to install. I always do an backup before any changes. So when you do a wipe that wipes all your data, but you can do an advanced restore. When you do this and choose advanced restore, what options should you choose to restore?
Thanks.

Depends on what your trying to restore. For example, say you do a backup before you flash a new theme. A couple days later you decide you don't like the theme and want to revert back. Then you would want to choose advanced restore and restore system only. Another example, say you flash a new ROM and have to wipe everything beforehand. After the initial boot, you can advanced restore your data. Note that this does not always work as data from different ROMs is not always compatible, but it's worth a try.
I'll just put this out there for other noobs using twrp. I've never done a nandroid backup before, and I'm currently running twrp v2.6.3.2. When I select backup, it directs me to select which partitions, with boot, system & data already checked. Do I need to check any of the other options (Recovery, Cache, EFS)? TIA.

most important is the EFS one, somewhere mentioned it contains your IMEI etc. Backup it, and copy it for safe keeping. Everything else you should be able to recover, but EFS if lost might lead you to a non-usable phone.
Cache not needed.
Recovery well depends, but its just 8-11MB more I would check it as well.
Actually you can back it up all.
The most space will take the SYSTEM and DATA anyways, the rest is few MB's. Let's say SYSTEM is your ROM (system apps etc), and DATA is your config and installed apps. (Not entirely true if you do some modifications but these 2 partitions you need to restore the backup as you had it)
Boot is the kernel. Which might be needed by the specific System if you go custom, again only some MB's.
Just remember that you can even choose what you will recover. So when you change your recovery, kernel etc and you go for restore of some older backup, careful of compatibility in between ROM and KERNEL for example
Awesome thanks for the quick informative info. I figured it wouldn't hurt to just backup everything, but I thought I'd ask just in case I missed something.
i'm sure you have to select:
system;
recovery;
boot;
data.
But what should i select from the others partitions?
cache
cust
3rdmodem
splash2
modem_om
3rdmodemnvmback
Can you explain?
Hi, i use TWRP from years , never selected anythig, just clic on the Backup button
I made a backup with the simkin's one and restored it without any problem
The phone is exactly in the same configuration, just had to reinstall Waze as usual
cache - no point
cust - no need, but wouldn't harm anything
i don't know why splash2 even shows up! mistake in the fstab in recovery - something else to fix..
the others, well.. if you're going from a 140 to 170 backup (or similar) i guess they would be required, but I haven't tested this myself! these are things that get patched with incremental firmware updates, we cannot manually flash these with fastboot, so handle with care!
Okay im not new to backing up in twrp , but with this nexus 6P it's all different types of options to choose from lol im used to picking data , system , and recovery or something but with this phone the boxes are like system, data , cache , vendor image , this and this and that, what options do i pick to make a successful backup? And yes i want to keep my data
The defaults of System, Data, and Boot are all that's needed. Make sure to disable Security/Screen lock before creating a backup.
Hi XDA!
I am using FreedomOS 1.9 so I'd like to change it to Resurrection Remix-OS.
Before do it, I have the next questions:
I already Have the .img from Codework's TWRP, can I dirty flash it through my current TWRP to "upgrade" it or should I just use cmd via Windows with fastboot mode?
I want to wipe all my actual data (apps, media, etc) to let the OP5 empty and begin form 0? Can I wipe data now that I am in FreedomOS and it will start the rom like the 1st time? Will may be some problems if I do it?
I have my OP encrypted, is this a problem? If I must unencrypt it, how can I do it?
I hope you can help me, I do not want to become my OP5 in a paperweight.
Thank you for the help! :fingers-crossed:
Make sure the following,
1. TWRP should be latest, atleast 3.2.1 (check RR ROM about which version of TWRP it suggests)
2. Most of the custom ROM suggests clean flash i.e wipe Dalvik, Cache, System and Data in TWRP
3. Take complete backup of your apps via Titanium Backup or any similar app
4. Before you flash, make sure to take a full system backup in TWRP and transfer to your PC just in case
5. Secure all your images, videos, files from your device internal memory to your PC just in case your phone gets formatted
6. If the ROM sugest to do format data in TWRP (TWRP > Wipe > Format data), it will decrypt your phone and consequently you will loose all your information from your internal memory, and this is the reason why you have take full copy of your info as explained in step 5 above
As long as you make sure the steps mentioned above are taken care, you are good to go..
