Camera interface, what is the HD for? - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on 3.0.2 and I know HDR and the flash icon, but what is HD for, high def? if so in terms of what? does it mean the std photos are not as good or is it something completely different? why have HD option in photos?? thanks

The file/image size stays the same so that rules out the RAW idea.

I read somewhere that its a attacking of a bunch of images, something called clear image...

Image quality (gallery)

How about the image quality of the gallery?
Sharpness? Clarity?
Any color banding on gradation?
24bits or 32bits supported?
pen-tiled? I read it is no longer pen-tiled, so that's good.
I read that Nexus One Gallery is not that good, compared to HTC for example.
I think it very good. Can be laggy at times, but I think thatscits cache being too small

the image quality in the gallery is rather bad. the images look much better on the computer.

Camera not very good

Everyone says the camera quality is one of the best features of the galaxy s but I think its pretty terrible. All pictures took look dark and don't look clear when you zoom in. Who else thinks the camera is poor on this phone
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
can't confirm that. As long as there is a good light, the pictures will turn out great. Compared to other 5mpx shooters I really like the Galaxy S one.
Yep i also like the quality in comparison to other 5mp cams. what suxx is that there is no led flash, but i think we all knew that before bying this phone
Btw did you adjust settings to fine and perhaps enable stabilization mode?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
and i do not recognize sgs1 5mpx camera as good - as said especialy when it is not much light pictures comes gradient - it is ok but still should perform better
i do not recal such on my goof old lost nokia n95 with its optics
same as with gps here looks like sgs1 was assembled from som low cost parts overall
that is why i am sceptic on sgs2 (tested it few times) and looking formward to 3rd revision of samsung look onsmartphone for masses =)
(sgs got gps chip not broadcom bot lirf or something like this that performs way better but camera still records/pics gradient in dark)

i dunno exactly cause im on cm7 and thus cannot look it up right now, but it should be somewhere in the settings of the camera app (you know where you can decide where if you want to save photos on internal or external sd etc.)

Are you viewing the pictures on the phone in gallery? Or in another app on your phone? Or on your computer?
The reason this is important is that when using gallery app, our phones only loads a half resolution version image (to make it easier and snappier to handle)! You can download other image viewer apps in the market that view the full resolution on phone and therefore allow better zooming in to the resulting images.
Also the pictures therefore look better on the computer too, as this also using the full resolution on the image.
So, your problem might be more the gallery app at fault rather than the camera itself. Do some tests of your own to see if this is true.
I am no expert on this topic, but I remember reading this somewhere, and my tests confirm it appears to be true! (YMMV!)

I'm sure that you must have some of the settings wrong on the camera App, because I have loaded pics to my computer, cropped the unwanted portion and printed on A4 paper. The resulting print was as good as I ever get with any 5mp camera.
I have also sent both pictures and video to my 55" TV screen from my SGS, using Allshare, and the quality is on a par with HD TV.
I agree that you get more versatility with a dedicated camera, but you've got to remember that the SGS is a phone with a camera as an accessory, not a camera that makes phone calls.
Finally, why do people complain about the lack of LED flash, at best, it's only useful up to a metre, but we all knew that the SGS did not have LED camera flash before we bought the phone.
i remember my good old nokia n95 making pictures same quality - and that was 3mpx

It's good enough for me. Just make sure you are on 5mpx my phone likes to go back to 0.3mpx for some reason. oh and you should at least be on 2.2, heard that produces better pictures

Excessive JPEG compression on HTC One photos...?

A couple of reviews have remarked on the uncomfortably high level of JPEG compression they saw on HTC One photos, and said that there's no way to turn the compression down. They were most likely using phones with pre-release software, and normally I wouldn't be too concerned at this stage, as that's the kind of thing that would likely be tweaked later; but in this case I have to wonder whether high levels of compression is a "feature" that HTC judged to be absolutely necessary because of the Zoe system. With Zoe turned on, every time you take a picture you're actually capturing twenty separate 4-megapixel images, plus a 3-second-long 1080p video clip as well: turn the compression down and your 26GB would fill up very quickly.
Does anyone have any first-hand knowledge of whether this is an issue in final software? And, if it is, does anyone have any educated speculation as to whether it might be possible to work around it without voiding your warranty?
A final observation: I wonder if some of the complaints about supposed "noise" in certain HTC One photos may actually be referring to compression artefacts?
heavy compression is indeed worrying on the One X we have camera mods which can fix this but needed root
As per i have read htc one doesnt use any compression and if in certain cases it does its very less..

no during processing it does it over RAW images using its imagesense chipset but the end results when saving to the Nand is still getting compressed
Forgive my ignorance but why would the compression be a bad thing as it will reduce space but I assume reduce the quality of the photo?

JPEG reduces the size and quality
I think it was the Polish review where the guy mentions that there was no way of changing the jpeg compression settings. Perhaps the default is set to medium rather than high which could explain the artifacts?

So I suppose it would depend on how much the quality reduces as to whether it's going to be that bad of a thing compared to the room on the SD Card that is saved?
Could a mod be made to unlock the compression for those that don't want it?

Is someone going to answer this question ... I could, but not in the next 12 hours or so .. and it IS an important question .. somebody please post a close-up of a heavily compressed jpeg vs a tiff or raw ...
otherwise I'll be back to answer I guess

Dude...?

why is the camera so horrible?

Every picture i take is so washed out. My amaze has a rediculously good camera and it came out 2 years ago
I agree, this camera kind of sucks. I had a HTC Vivid before this phone and it took great photos. Then again, I feel like HTC phones in general take great photos.
The camera is pretty bad for inside photographs but photos that are made with natural lights are pretty good. I also suggest installing the camera mod to improve video and picture quality.

I have to post edit every single one of my photos using Picasa, otherwise they look washed out. "I am feeling lucky" is usually good enough.
Are you viewing them on the nexus4 screen? It is a very washed out color calibration. You need to get Franco kernel and adjust the colors

Has the increase in actual quality of that mod ever been proven? For as far as I know, it hasn't.
The pics do look a lil washed out but still good for a phone. If I want better pics I break out the rebel. For on the go, it'll suffice.

Uploaded to imgur because XDA image compression reduces the quality.

Still not as high quality as the original image due to compression though differences are minimal.
nah my colors are amazing, i made my own patch for color calibration on faux kernel. looks as good as the i5. so its def not that. ill try the camera mod and see how it goes, iw as asking around before if there was one for our phone and no one seemed to answer so thanks for the link! :good::good::good:
Edit: I think this is only for videos but ill see thanks for the reminder of what file exactly it was in that link, ill prob make my own camera mod like i did for the amaze

"Image Decoding Memory Cap has been doubled from 20mb to 40mb. (Image quality seems to have become slightly better)"

Stock camera from SGS4 and HTC One Google edition - with working Photo Sphere

Source
Also boot animation and awesome live wallpaper.
Just tried the camera, everything works, including Photo Sphere. It gets hot! Haven't played with the settings, but i think stock XZ camera has better image quality.
Does it have the s4's camera interface or aosp interface?
Sent from my C6603
AOSP, it is a "Google edition" after all.
Does it have HDR?
How's the quality of the images compared to the stock camera?
Scene, white balance, exposure, panorama, photo sphere, video recording, front camera. All it has, pretty simple. The only thing it may be useful is photo sphere or if you like the interface. The stock gallery is also included.
about google cam .apk
first of all, many disadvantage:
no storage choice between internal and memory card, photo are stores in internal. no customizationz
second no hrd in photo and vudeo
third settings are limited

Then don't use it. I haven't installed it myself, but the article says it runs alongside your current camera anyway, so you're losing nothing.
I'm sure quite a few people will install it just for the photosphere mode that Sony didn't include in their 4.2.2 camera in any case.

I have been playing around with this camera app for a few hours now and aside from photosphere it is quite a poor app in comparison to the quality of photos it produces. I will still keep it installed as I will use photosphere occasionally. It can never replace Sony's app in my opinion.
Edit. Also volume key takes photos which could be useful.

this is a really neat app in that it does photospheres and timelapse, it's not the same as the camera jb+ as that also has the video effects enabled..
Nothing wrong with having different tools, for different purposes
Been playing around with app.
Seems scene settings are slightly messed up and picture quality is not as good as stock camera. No HDR option. But photosphere works.
As for volume key for taking pics, there is a mod already that does that with our stock camera and even can quick launch the camera. (needs root)
