SD Card ignored in all cases - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm about exhausted looking for a solution. 1st the Nooter steps don't work, the NC boots into original system.
No matter what steps I follow nothing causes the NC to read the SD card. At this point I'm totally confused.
Here's what I've done:
1) format the SD card, title "boot"
2) Using Win32DiskImager Iinstall "generic-sdcard-v1.3-CM7-9-10-10.1-10.2-11-largest-Rev8c.img" which gives me a list of files on the SD card
.android_secure
Android
B&N Downloads
getjar
LOST.DIR
MyFiles
MLO
u-boot.bin
uImage
uRamDisk
3) Then I copy
CM-11-20160523-NIGHTLY-encore.ZIP
and
open_gapps-arm-4.4-nano-20160603.ZIP
to the SD card.
(What is the purpose of CM-11-20160523-NIGHTLY-encore-recovery.img? Am I suppose to change the name to just recovery.img? that doesn't help the situation.)
4) eject the SD card, insert into NC, connect the NC to the computer via the charging cable.
5) Result is boot of NC into original operating system as always.
What the H am I doing wrong?

Are you sure you have a Nook Color? You could have a Nook Tablet. A Nook Color has a black bezel and the Nook Tablet has a silver bezel. These files will not work on a Nook Tablet.

[Q] NC boots into stock BN software instead of CM7

I am trying to get CM7 to boot on my NC with an sd card, using these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
I get as far as this part
"shutdown your nook and take the SD card out, insert it into your computer.
Copy the gapps-... file to the SD card on the first partition (titled boot) without changing the file name".
When I take the card out of my NC and put it back in my laptop to install market and gapps, it says it needs to be formatted before I can use it. The files that were on it before (the installer image and the nightly build) seem to have been deleted from the card by my nook. Any suggestions?
Remove then reinsert a few more times, if still persists, try to use a usb-sd adapter.
Just to confirm, when you inserted the card with the nightly build into the NC and powered on, you did see messages saying it was installing CM7, correct?
Were you then able to boot into CM7 and set up Wi-Fi before removing the card to copy over gapps?
If the above are not the case, it's very likely your laptop never properly wrote the image to the card in the first place. Even if you did everything right, many people report difficulty with the all-in-1 card readers on their laptops, and need a separate USB reader.
Some things you may not have done right:
Did you unzip the compressed .gz archive of the disk image?
Did you write the resulting .img file to the SD card using a program such as WinImage?
I'm assuming you're using a Windows machine. If not, let us know what OS you're using and what steps you took to write the image, and what results you got when inserting the card in the NC.
Thank you for your replies, but I figured it out. My laptop wasn't recognizing my sd card after I took it out of my nook, but when I put the card in my droid, it saw that the files were there. I added the apps file using my phone and when I went to install them on the nook it worked. Took me five hours to figure this all out but I finally got it. Thanks again.

[Q] Access to bootable sd card from stock OS after 1.4.1 update

I have a nook color with dual boot from sd card. The sd card having an android 3.0 version.
After I got the 1.4.1 update, I noticed that I was able to access the sd card( the boot partition alone) from the stock OS boot of nook.
But now, dont know how, I dont see that anymore.
Was this a flawed update that was fixed or am I missing something.
Do help please.
I could really use the advantage of using the bootable sd card as a regular storage card when using the stock OS of nook. I prefer reading on the stock OS of nook.
Not sure why you're not seeing the SD card anymore, does it still boot?
SD card installs create multiple partitions on the SD card and the Nook will only be able to access the first one (boot). It should be accessible with any version of the Nook default OS.
You should have a media partition with a decent amount of room (1-5gb depending on NC version). That would give you more room than the 100-or-so mb on the boot partition.
Just found out that you can point the emmc install to see the "sdcard" partition of the sd card using the following info:

Yes, I can boot from it. Every time I plug in the SD card, the notification already says that it is safe to remove the SD card. In the device Info part of the setting, the "Unmount SD card" is already greyed, though it does say that the SD card is found.
It is however useful for me to know that the boot partition should always be accessible.
I did remove the SD card a couple of times without unmounting it first, could this possibly have corrupted the card?

Try to boot the uSD card (the one with Android 3.0 on it) and see what happens.
If it can, then it's good, if not, you can say it's corrupted.
Yes, I can boot from it. So I assume the card is OK
I plugged in other uSD cards and they get recognized fine. So I assume the Nook stock OS device recognition is OK.
I should probably recreate the boot partition as a last ditch effort
I had the same problem at first, but now I have mounted the correct sdcard partition that I wanted to mount.
I couldn't get it to work with editing the vold.fstab file at first. Then at some point after I manually mounted the correct partition through adb shell and edited the vold.fstab it now works.

Can not gain Root. [v1.3.0]

Hello, I'm new to the Nook world. I'm Currently Trying to Root a Stock Nook v1.3.0.
Here's how the about screen looks (Minus User Info)
::Software Version::
1.3.0
::Model Number::
BNRV200
::Serial Number::
2014370085802011
I have a 2G SanDisk MicroSD Card.
I've followed the directions on this thread to the T.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027&highlight=1+3
I have my SD Card setup with the Clockwork Image.
http://monster-rootpack.googlecode.com
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
So here's the issue.
I turn of my Nook, put in my Micro SD, plug in USB. But the nook boots straight into the Nook 1.3.0. No ClockworkMod Recovery.
I've tried using an 8G, 4G, and a couple of 2G's I have laying around. None of them work.
I'm using my phone as the SD connector, mounted in Clockwork. SD Only, nothing else (Can't do ADB, that's how I know its only the SD connected).
I just wanna get MIUI on my nook. Can somebody please help me, as I'd love to have this Nook Rooted.
Please feel free to PM me any info you have.
Just to make this point clear, you run the risk of damaging your cell phone by using it as a SD connector.
There is no need to root the factory firmware to install MIUI.
First download this bootable CWM image, HERE
If you are using windows, download Win32DiskImager, HERE
Use Win32DiskImager to flash the bootable CWM image to your SD card, this is where it can damage your phone if you don’t select the correct drive
Once the image has been flashed to the SD card, use windows explorer to copy the MIUI zip file onto the SD card.
With the Nook Color off, put that SD card into your NC, and turn it on
Now it should boot into recovery, and you can flash the MIUI zip to the device
Don't use your phone as your SD reader and make sure to run Win32 as admin.

[Q] nook color will not mount sd card

After attemptindg to make a bootable sd card with CM7 and failed probably due to my inexperience I tried to reformat the card and start over again. Now my computer will sometimes recognise the card and other times not. The real problem is that the nook will not not mount the card and formatting on the nook fails every time. I have tried numerous sd cards and none will not format on the nook. As a last resort I have done the 8x's reset and now am back to the begining but it willstill not format the sd card. Any help as where to start would be greatly apperciated

You need to format the card on your PC with SDFormatter (free on the web). It formats it properly so the nook can read it and erase it if you want.

nook color will not mount sd card
Thanks-- I have downloaded the sdformat program and formatted the sd card as you indicated. When I put the card in the nook it asked to format the card. At that point I ejected the card and followed your instructions in the signature of your message. At this point I put the card
into the nook and powered it up. The nook then booted into the Barnes and Noble software. It looks as if the nook is not seeing the sd card.
any suggestions?
Steve
Just tried again. (formatting.. burning image and the cm7.2 zip file to the sd card and the nook will not boot at all with the sd card inserted.
Take out the card and it boots to the stock software.. May be a new card is needed???

You are sending me mixed issues. You said you tried to make bootable SD. It failed. Then you could not get the nook to recognize card or the PC to reliably recognize it. What I told you to do was for getting the card back as readable on the PC and nook.
Now you are trying to make it bootable again? That is a different issue. Look in my nook color tips thread at item A9 to see some issues with making a bootable SD.
And you are sure this is a Nook Color, not a Nook Tablet?

Thanks for the reply, as i said earlier I did reformat the card as per you suggestion to no avail. The PC was able to recognise the card and the nook color was not. At that point I tried to make the card bootable again hoping that the Nook would see it with the image on it. Now the nook color will not boot up at all with the card inserted but will boot normallly to stock without the sd card inserted. Sorry for any confusion. I will try and reformat the card again an and let you know wha happens. This time I will go no furthur till I hear from you folks.
Again thanks for all you do!! Steve

What you did not say in your earlier post was whether after formatting the SD and inserting in the NC and it asking if you wanted to format, was did you try to let the NC format it and was it successful? You just said you immediately removed it and followed some instructions from my signature. I have a lot of instructions there so I don't know what you did.

The sd card formatted sucessfully. at that point I inserted it into the nook and booted it up. The nook indicated that the card was inserted. Then it asked to format the sd card. When I did so the reply was formatting failed. Tried several attempts. The computer had no problem seeing the
card so i put the image on the card along with the CM encore zip file and tried it in the nook. The nook would not boot with the card inserted,
so now at this point I have formatted the card again sucsessfully using the sd formatter program. Not sure where to go from here.
thanks for all you help thus far....Steve

IAJust tried a brand new Sandisk card to no avail. The nook color notifies me of the card being inserted but that it needs to be formatted. When the format option is selected the format fails. Do you think there is something physically wrong with the sd card Reader? Is there an alternate way of getting the CM software on the. Nook color. I am openn to any suggestions. Tkank for all the assistance. Steve

May be card reader and may be your slot in the nook.
Yes there is an alternate way using ADB, but it is not simple.
You have to connect with ADB, mount the boot partition and push the RecImg and RecRam files from the burned card to the boot partition. But you have to use my bootable CWM SD to get the files. Most other CWM cards don't have them. Those two files replace the stock versions and then you can boot to CWM by holding the n key while booting. Then you can choose files to flash from internal memory.

Thanks for the idea.... but being a novice I think that that one may be over my head. I think at this point I'll just have a regular old Nook color ereader. Thanks for all your help and suggestions..I think that the Nook color has gotten the best of me. Steve

[Q] Basic question: Rooted with NookManager, what should I do with my SD card?

Hi,
I know this is fairly basic, but I'm really confused about what I should do with my SD card now.
I've read quite a few threads about different ways of rooting nook device, and so far I found NookManager is the most easy and understandable one (I'm a beginner ) And it is running perfectly on my Nook 2 at the moment.
For most of the root methods, they say one should use 'SD Formatter' to format the disk (i.e SD card) if the user is happy with the ROM, as in their methods the user should have already backed up before hand on the PC. However with NookManager, I did the backup during the root process in my SD card as instructed.
And I have realised that 'My file' is under the 'NookManager' disk, so I imagine everything should keep as it is in the SD card?
But I also notice that my 4GB SD card shrank to about 63MB when I wrote 'NookManager.img' in my card..
Plus NookManager loading page appears every time when I reboot if the SD card is inserted.
So I'm really confused now, could anyone help?
Many thanks !!!
To anyone as new as me and has the some question:

By #2 straygecko from NookManager thread:
A 2GB SD card is fine. Even a 1GB SD card would work if you don't have a huge amount of books already on your NST. NookManager is a 64MB image so when you flash it you'll only see a 64MB SD card. Boot your NST with it and when you make a backup NookManager will make a second partition on the SD card using up the rest of the space on the card and put the backup there. Because Windows won't see the second partition with the backup on the SD card once the backup is complete and before you exit NookManager use your usb/microusb cable to plug your NST into your PC. You'll see two drives appear on your PC - Nook Manager and Nook Backup. Copy the backup off the Nook Backup drive. Eject the two drives on the PC then go ahead and root the NST and exit NookManager.
At this point if you put you put your SD card into your NST you will only see the 64MB NookManager partition. If none of the apps you want to load require an SD card you could just leave the SD card out of the NST and you'll still have room for books on the internal memory. But I found a lot of apps require the SD card and an SD card gives you room for oodles of books if you need it. If you don't have another SD card to use in your NST then you'll need to repartition and format your SD card. Put the SD card into your PC card reader and use a partition manager (Minitool Partition Wizard, Paragon Partition Manager 12 Free or your favorite) to delete the two partitions on the SD card and create a new FAT32 partition that takes up the whole card. To make my life easier if I need to go back to the backup I made a drive image of the SD card before I repartitioned it. Put the SD card back in your NST and you're good to go.

Thank you. I have just read it again. Obviously I missed out your important post when I first read it, as the thread is fairly long
I got my answer now, thanks again.
My 2 cents:
After many problems with the dates of files on the SD card mysteriously changing by a few integral hours I decided that I had had enough with FAT systems.
(FAT stores timestamps in local time, a recipe for anomalies.)
For many, this might not be an issue, but if you are using things that sync using timestamps, it will be.
See: ADB sync utility - adbsync
My solution is to use the ext3 filesystem on an SD card.
See: vold, using ext3 on SD, USB drives
