I'm also trying to figure this out. I have seen posts claiming it's possible, but I can't even upgrade my same device from 4.4.1 to 5.1.1 how did you do it?
I think the bootloader gets locked once you upgrade to LP with AT&T S5s

Just learned this the hard way. Spent my entire day activating my service, flashing my firmware to get root... then in two minutes effed myself over by permanently removing root access with 5.1.1 great.

Hey fellow XDA members, I have been searching for a way to
root and install a custom recovery on my I337M, but am slightly
confused about this phone, and I don't wanna screw it up.
First off I am on 4.3 - MVLUEMK6. I also have the Knox app.
Am I able to Root using a certain method? I tried Saferoot, but that was a
no go. I have also heard through my searches of "Kingo", which
I'm hoping to try, given it won't turn this S4 into a brick.
Also in the CF-Auto Root Thread, it states near the Downloads,
that AT&T users shouldn't use it, and go figure I'm on Telus. So also a no go..
Can this darn thing be rooted?!?

Thanks very much my good sir, I appreciate your insight on this!
the I337M (jfltecan) is NOT the same as the I337 (jflteatt)
i use a I337M (originally bell), cf auto root works perfect
your phone is the same as mine, use cf auto root and flash via odin on pc, it'll work
I rooted my S3 and S4, but im having a hard time making heads or trails of the s5. Is there no solution to root and rom my version?

I've spent the past two hours looking for a root method for the vzw gs5 and it seems that we are waiting for someone to find an exploit to unlock the bootloader.

towelroot dot com Stupid forums wont let me post the link but try that This worked for my s5 G900V to root. No idea if any roms work for it yet omega didnt . But the root did and it was very easy.
Ha. I don't know how you are searching but there are several roots available. Your search missed an entire Verizon S5 sub-forum. With a how to root sticky thread at the top of the forum.
The "towel root" by Geohot is recommened for the 900V as the poster above suggested.
The Verizon bootloader is locked unlike most other carriers. So most are using Safestrap to cope with the locked bootloader and load a custom ROM.

I once had a unlocked bootloader but was forced into upgrade to NJ4 and sorry to say there is no escape from the locked bootloader. I'm now running a updated version of SafeStrap 3.82 and there are a few that are working to get lollipop running for our device. However the talk is a kernel problem and that may take awhile.
I just wish they would kick out a official lollipop update. I've been on T-Mobile for over 10 years and ended up with this device because I won it. Wish I could afford to get rid of it and move to a T-Mobile device period.

Nope. You can blame AT&T for that (since they requested the locked bootloader for their version of the device). I got lucky with mine; when I got it, they said they would update it there in the store, but I told them to hold off because I could do it myself. That was the only thing that allowed me to custom firmware on my phone - that update they wanted to flash was MF3.
Please guys tell me there's a way to root the galaxy s5 for att smg 900a on lollipop version 5.0. If there's not should I upgrade to the latest firmware?
Thankd
You can't root g900a on Lollipop as of right now. AT&T locked the bootloader when they released 5.0 BUT.. you can downgrade your phone to KitKat. Then root it using Towelroot root and then flash a prerooted lollipop rom using flashfire Here is a link with a bunch of people that downgraded there g900a to KitKat and how they did it and worked around everything: http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s5/489071-tutorial-downgrade-samsung-galaxy-s5-5-0-4-4-kitkat-6.html This will help you out in starting the root process on your phone. You can also Google "Downgrade g900a KitKat".

This is not true. If you are running completely stock lollipop either becuase you purchased the phone with it on it, or you took the ota it is not possible to downgrade to KitKat, you will brick your phone. If you were rooted on KitKat, you can update to a prwrooted lollipop, which I am running now for example, and using that method allows you to downgrade as well with no issues so long as you don't take the ota. This only applies to the g900a.

Also not true.. You can downgrade your phone from 5.0 to KitKat DEPENDING on the version of bootloader. That will make or break the whole possibility of downgrading. Check the link I posted and read through the forum. It has been done by multiple people but the general consensus is if your phone's bootloader is past a certain version you're screwed for now and if you can't downgrade and root but you want to in the future I would suggest not updating for a while until there is a method of rooting your current version bootloader.

I did check the link you posted and only found people that tried it on a g900a unable to downgrade. There was no time that you could go from stock L to KK on the g900a.

To be quite honest dwade. You can save yourself a lot of headaches and stress by putting your phone on craigslist and getting yourself the g900f unlocked that way you can avoid all of these processes and the risk of bricking your phone lol If you're looking to root and get into modding your phone, AT&T & Verizon phones are the worst when it comes to locking things down.
Troubles rooting 900a with 4.4.4
I had problems using towelroot on a ATT branded 900a with 4.4.4. Any tips or links that can help me root to get rid of the Hotspot block?
Thanks in advance

It's certainly the case for the F variant that towelroot only works on 4.4.2 that was compiled before the end of June 2014......If there is a build that matches these conditions for the A variant, towelrooting may be possible.....If not, I guess you'll have to try CF Root or similar...
Edit.....check this thread......

My wife has the launch Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 and I rooted it immediately after we got it and have not updated it since release. She is ready to upgrade and I'm trying to determine the best route to accomplish the upgrade to the latest version. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I've used ODIN in the past, but can I just use ODIN and load the latest 6.0.1 firmware?
Yes, backup your data and use odin to upgrade..
And a factory reset is highly recommended after upgrade
Verizon (and AT&T) run their devices with locked bootloaders. With the release of Lollipop came enhanced bootloader security which makes rooting very difficult, if not damn near impossible. So yes, you *can* easily upgrade, but subsequent rooting may well be an issue.

I would recommend you to install smart switch on your pc and update your phone with it. It is much simpler than using odin. You just plug in your phone and smart switch does the rest
