Partition internal memory to retain data after new rom? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Is it possible to partition the 64gb memory such that my data is retained after every new rom installation?
I came from note 2 and was very confident when formatting the mobile as i can take the sd card out before doing any experiments, but on Nexus 6P i have lost data 3 times as the rom. Was encrypted and custom recovery doesn't enter without formatting user data.
If partitioning is possible please help me.

You do know if you remove the security pin/finger print that twrp will be able to backup and restore data?
If I'm not mistaken they've also released a new twrp that allows decryption.
Keep in mind that ROMs of different bases may not boot without wiping. Quite honestly since Google's restore function has gotten better I haven't had the need to keep data. Everything from my home screen layout to my app data gets restored after a flash.

I really didn't know that. Need to try it. Its been one week without root. First time ever. Its really hard.

Is the answer 'NO' to the partitioning of internal memory?

How are you producing this issue? What is your setup? This sounds like you're either using an older version of TWRP or N developer preview. For N Developer Previews, you must be and stay decrypted to use TWRP. Format userdata then install a modified boot.img to remain decrypted. The stock boot forces encryption.

I am using latest TWRP (version 3.x.x.x) with N Preview 3. Diasbled all securities.
rebooted into bootloader and installed TWRP, rebooted to Recovery. Stuck at splash.
Took backup of internal memory and installed modified Boot and now working fine.
taking a backup and restoring takes hours for some reason.

Ok. To flash a Marshmallow rom, I believe you need to just flash the matching OS' vendor.img before booting into the Marshmallow rom. Make sure to do your factory reset and system wipe like usual.
If you intend to use N previews each month, you'll likely have to stay decrypted. I do not see a reason for the TWRP team to officially support Android N until it's official release.

I am not blaming anyone. but was only curious if partitioning internal memory was possible. I remember changing the partition tables on Nexus One.

Oh, I wasn't implying that. Hope you don't take it that way. I just meant, if you plan on using N previews, unfortunately this scenario is not likely to change. Just wanted to help you resolve your issue with encryption, TWRP, and switching between Android MM/N.
I don't know about partitioning but maybe it is possible? Maybe someone else can chime with their experience?

[Closed] Internal Storage Format Problem

Hi all,
So i have rooted/unlocked N10(32GB). I was running a custom compiled rom for a while but decided to switch to CM10.1 as I was getting some weird lag/instability.
I'm running TWRP and so I went to do a wipe and accidentally wipe EVERYTHING, including the zip file with CM10.1 on. After to some fiddling I was able to adb/fastboot push it over to install. However I have a problem. In flashing CM10.1 onto the devices I seem to have screwed up my partition(s). I only have about 500MB of space. Settings>Storage shows 27.26GB as the total, but all the other categories only add up to about 500.
How do I resolve this situation? Can I just adjust partitions sizes or possibly reflash the ROM with a specific command that will fix the space issue?
Thank you in advance!

For some reason it is very easy to corrupt the memory. Happenned to me once.
You will need to restore the factory image, first. (see the stickies in the nexus 10 general forum for instructions, there may be a specific image for the 32gb nexus 10), unlock the bootloader, install the custom recovery, then flash your Rom.

For Those Who Semi-Bricked Their Nexus 7 0MB Interal Storage

Hopefully this helps people in my situation.
So on the first day of having my nexus 7 i found a way to have no OS and 0MB internal storage showing in TWRP. Yah i suck.
I tried tons of things but knew a system image was needed.
HOW: I was about to flash the superuser root for 4.3 newly released and forgot to put it on nexus so i then proceeded to exit TWRP, however upon exiting TWRP the recovery detected i havent installed supersu and asked do i want to install superuser? I though why the hell not!
I confirmed to install superuser and then tried to reboot but for 20 minutes device could not boot. TWRP showed 0MB internal storage and pushing adb files in this state yielded nothing as there was no directory
This is how i managed to have a working tablet again
1. FORMAT DATA in TWRP - after doing this your internal storage should be back and not show 0MB
2. reboot to the bootloader
3. On your computer download this file kindly given to us by phuduong and uploaded by Nburnes
https://mega.co.nz/#!PBIiEbBJ!bKpdHxegOVlde12nsu_ulEyRq7UsANLLQab1IZjLIGc
Credit to Nburnes http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2918596[/QUOTE]
4. Once downloaded move that system.img file to your adb directory
5. With you nexus 7 in the bootloader, adb open, and file downloaded copy and paste this command into adb terminal
fastboot flash system system.img
6. Now you have an OS but it still would loop and wouldnt start
7. Boot into recovery and Format Data again, because for me 0MB interal storage was back again
8. Then Factory Reset
FINALLY YOUR DEVICE SHOULD BE BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE!!!!!
Is that the factory image? Have you tried going from unlocked bootloader & rooted back to factory using that image?

Google has yet to release the official factory image for the new N7. However, a kind user was gracious enough to make their own. It is likely to be almost identical to what Google will eventually release and should work the same way.
Thank you! Thank you!
good stuff OP. glad you got it working again
You all are life savers! 1000X Thanks!
I tried running through this, but it didn't work for me. I think my situation is different though because I tried to install a factory image for the 2012 nexus, and during part of that process I ran the "flash-all" script which starts by deleting boot, cache, recovery, userdata, and system.
I think deleting boot screwed me up, because even though I can go into recovery now after reinstalling twrp and I can restore my system using system.img, I still can't boot (get stuck on the google logo). Any way to fix that?
So you first tried to restore from the OLD Nexus 7 Image?????

Yes, I tried to restore from the old image. Obviously fastboot wont let you install the old image, but I didn't realize that until boot, system, cache, etc. were deleted
THANK YOU!!!
This worked perfectly! I had a wiped system folder (no ROM), and obviously no USB debugging enabled. And with the lack of a factory image, I've been counting seconds to seeing somebody post this!
Just follow the instructions carefully. Thank you guys!

OP and nburnes saved my butt!
I did this and now it seems my device is booting and it shows up as N7 when I attach it to my PC. But the display shows nothing at all. It just goes blank after the Google screen. Any ideas?
After flashing everything I could think of and banging my head and the device against the wall for two hours, I finally got it to work. Not sure how exactly but the last thing I did was reflashing bootloader. So if anyone has the same problem, try that.
Thank you.

Just download MMB29Q from the Google factory image website and fastboot flash the files using your computer. That is the February OTA. Don't bother with older OTAs.

It's probably easier just to flash the latest factory images, I have instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
If you use windows you can download factory image and execute the flash all bat file and it flashes it all for you in about 3 minutes via fastboot. Super easy.
Here's a how to install fastboot and adb. Literally tales a 20-30 seconds and works great. Fastboot and adb are mandatory for Nexus IMO. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979

Might want to point out that the flash-all.bat wipes the whole devices, this isn't apparent to those who aren't in the know.

Yes and that's what wipes data. You can easily flash them separately and do not need user data. I wipe my phone often so I don't care.

6p Bootloop of death softbrick

I was flying yesterday, and noticed that the phone went into a bootloop when I took it out of my pocket during the flight.
My phone is on purenexus with TWRP installed already. When I got back home I tried clean flash the latest Feb ROM update, wiping all partition besides storage partition before the flash. Also flashed the latest vendor image. I did not see any error during the flash process.
No matter what I try, the phone would not get past the google screen and reboots just before it gets to the boot screen.
I am now backing up data on my phone via TWRP. It's going to be a PITA if I need to RMA the phone as it was bought in the US but I am now using it overseas.
Any magical fix to this issue?
Prior to the phone had issue, it was running Nougat Purenexus rom Jan 2017 version.
I got it yesterday. Try to flash the factory image in this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62924118&postcount=2 (Step 10)

As I do not want to format internal storage, I tried option 11 - How To Flash The Factory Images (Return To Stock But Leaving Internal Storage Intact)
I followed all the steps and phone is still in bootloop.
Just backup your internal storage to somewhere in your PC and then you're free to go. Why dont try?

The fact that you have access to the recovery means you have a high chance of getting the phone back to the should. The real BLOD only has boot loader available but nothing else besides the bar code screen.

So you have TWRP access still, and you have used the flash-all.bat method through the boot loader and it's still boned??

How to get back to stock based roms from Oreo?

I am currently using the oreo roms(lineage, aicp and etc..), but I would like to get back to the stock based twrp roms like genesys and the other ones. The problem is that when I flash them via twrp, the phone boots and shows an error: encryption unsuccessful.

Just as a sub question, how to avoid encryption on Oreo ROMs?
you cant, the latest twrp the one with 3 2.1.1 encrypts the phone and it can be used only on oreo. if you want to go back to nougat or less you have to wipe all internal storage with all in one tool.
Remember abt backing up all photos, videos or your personal files in internal storage.
