Battery Drain - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone had issues in the last 4 or 5 days with battery drain? Both my Nexus 6P and 9 have this problem and cannot figure out the app culprit. I think it may be related to GMail or Exchange Sync. Not rooted on either device. Bootloader unlocked on both tho.

Not for me - I get drain from using my VPN and screen... I wonder is there a log somewhere you can easily read or an app that makes a note of all your key changes in recent times that's easily accessible and doesn't need a computer science degree/coding qualification for this type of thing? I often make a change that does something and need to go back and find out what the hell I did...

This is probably the cause of your problem.

What kind of apps do you have?? Like apps that you think might drain some battery. Also use betterbatterystat app to monitor what's waking your device.

With stock, around 2 hours of screen on time is typical. You can prolong the battery life by disable Google Now, location service, email sync, Playstore auto update, etc. Check your battery stats (try better battery stats from the store) to see if any third-party apps drain your battery.
The better way to do it is to unlock bootloader, root your phone then flash a custom kernel. I recommend franco.Kernel. 3-4 hours of screen on time is typical with franco.

Might as well flash a custom ROM with it if you're going to use a custom kernel IMO. When a new OTA, OP will have problems updating to it because he is using stock + custom kernel + custom recovery.
Here is how to fix your battery problem.
1. Turn off location access in Google Maps settings.
2. Wait about a week for the battery to go through its charge cycle 6-10 times. Let it get as low as possible without the battery dying (this is really bad) and be sure to let the battery sit at 100% for atleast a half hour or so when fully charged.
Each day you will see your battery life increase and when done, you should be getting around 5 hours screen on time.
Well dramatic change in battery life as displayed below. Now after having a read in several topics it seems like a fix is to have the wifi on. How strange as this goes against the ethos of all previous smartphones i have owned i.e. wifi on drains battery. I have uninstalled a few apps and also switched of location access, so to be sure that the fix is wifi related i will switch wifi off the next time i do a full charge and see how that behaves. By the way android os is way down in battery consumption now.

Please use already existing thread for battery related issues;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992627
But yes you have to understand few things about battery and how to manage it. Install better battery stats or gsam battery monitor and CPU spy and learn to read the data they produce to identify what's causing battery drain and how you can manage it.

I was interested in how the battery on the Nexus 4 performed but i aint trawling through 242 pages.
No one seems willing to help on here you just either get thread locked thread already exists or go look at this already running thread, never known a forum like it.
How long have you owned your nexus 4? I was shocked at my battery life at first, but after about 2 weeks it significantly improved. Now I can easily last 12 hours with about 2,5h screen time. Not as impressive as some others, but still doable. So you might just want to give your device a few weeks to get used to you using it.

huge mediaserver/audioout_2 wakelock hogging battery life

Today i want to work and put the device in a drawer. never touched it during the whole shift but one phone call. during a five hour period 30% of the battery was wasted. bbs showed audioout_2 wakelock took place for 5 hours. screen time was 30 minutes. I haven't kept any screen shots from bbs but i did capture on system battery usage.
what could have caused it?

STOCK EVERYTHING .
not even rooted or bootloader unlocked. An out of the box Nexus 4 16GB (301k),.
Perhaps there's a corrupted media file somewhere in the storage system.

I have no media files on my storage, all my music is via GOOGLE PLAY.
(the wakelock is not caused by google play because since I booted the phone I have not listened to any music)
There seems to be a fix for the problem, haven`t used it myself though. Link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050252. Its a init.d script at boot and you need root.
I wish to avoid rooting my device. when I bought the nexus I wanted to have a vanilla Google experience.
Also I don't wanna void my warranty.

Not rooting a Nexus is like forbidding the Pope to pray But to each his own.
Yeah I know, I think I'll root if i hear reports that rooted devices can receive official google updates

I remember one time, I left a game without closing the game. 5 hours later my battery dipped and I tried to figure out why. I realized that the game was still running in the background and drained a good 30% of my battery because of the mediaserver. I know it was still actice cuz when I hit recent it picked up exactly where I left off with no lag jumping back into it.
I'm guessing the game isn't coded to freeze in the background when you leave it. I could be wrong, but this is one possibility I think.
I'm on PA, with the matrix kernel. The game is called PAD in case anyone wants more info. I say, just be sure to exit games or generally certain apps when you finish playing them.
This only happened once and since then never again since I started closing that particular app correctly. Also, I don't mess with any music volume booster mods. Just get some noise isolating earbuds/headphones. The volume booster mods definitely killed battery much quicker than it was worth with my first nexus 4
I close everything and still got 1.5h of AudioOut_2 and AudioOut_3 wakelock overnight . 20% battery drain overnight. normally my battery drains 5-6% overnight.
up
Maybe there is a corrupt file on your phone, it doesn't have to be music, could also be a ringtone or a video.
considering you don't want to root I would consider factory reset then reinstall 1 app at a time until you find the culprit. I know it's time consuming but it's either that or keep your charger handy

Google Services Battery Drain

Today I noticed that Google Services is draining battery by using some services but unlike before it is using it a lot.
Did any one experience this strange issue?

I'm pretty sure that's one of the ways we can take in order to save a bit more battery, but then again, why are we buying high-end devices with GPS tracking for whatever apps or security as I have (cerberus app) or real-time mails of work, social feed, etc.
Someone will say that they don't need instant mails on the device or don't want the GPS; point is, having GPS/push notifications should not be an issue for any user since those are the features we can, want, could use..
Only thing I really miss on blackberry devices...
This did not happen before which makes it strange, well at least not having that much percentage.

Just to update on this. I done some reading online and found a few people mentioned that it was the latest play store update causing the battery drain. I went ino the app manager and deleted the update an went back to the original playstore apk that came with the rom.THis seems to have reduced my google services drain and my phone is lasting longer now

Cache Update Service not letting phone deep sleep

It is a Google service and I have disabled location services and Google Now. Does not seem to make a difference. I have looked everywhere and have come up with nothing. I have the phone set up basically the same apps as my N4 and my Nexus is crushing my G2 in battery life. Any ideas would be great on what is causing this.

I am using better battery stats and it is partial wake lock I guess I did not bother looking at the overall usage. I am trying a few more things and will report back later.

add me to the list of people this is driving nutzo.
Question, when you go to google sync under settings/accounts and sync, does it show that 'sync is not available at this time?'
I wonder if that could be causing it?
I am waiting for my case to make it my daily driver but last night I tinkered and went and set up all my Google apps and changed my Google plus photo to only upload on charger. When I turned it off it was deep sleeping and and that wake lock was no where to be found. If anyone wants to try this and see if it helps.
