S7 Edge Missing Features - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I just bought S7 Edge and i find it so strange that no one is talking about those missing Features ??
For Example:
1- Camera Modes MIssing..
Drama Shot ( this mode is in s4 & s5 )
Animated Photo ( Gif where you can only select a part of the photo to animate )
Double Shot ( like taking photo with the rear and front camera )
Best Face
2- Apps
Group Play
Video player ( you cant pause video and take Snapshot from video like i used to do in S4 / S5 )
Why did they remove all that from S7 and they were cool features?
Please let me know if i can replace those Modes/Apps with anything else ?
Thanks

Animated photo and double shot mode can be download in Galaxy Apps.
Just open camera and click mode and you will see download button on top which direct you to Galaxy Apps.

Not really the ones on the Galaxy Apps is so different for example:
1- Animated Photo in S7 takes Multiple Photos and makes them GIF -- In S4 or S5 It Allows you to select part in the photo to be the only part to animate like the image below the girl will animate and the boy will be freezed in the GIF you cant do that in S7

2- Double shot in S7 mode takes 2 different photos in the same time -- In S4 or S5 it takes 1 Photo Using Both Cameras Picture like the image below
So i believe thats a DownGrade in S7

What do you mean by S7 take 2 different photos in double shot mode? I don't see any different from my old S4 double shot.

The picture i provided is from s4 ... in s7 you cant take double shot in 1 image, s7 double shot mode just allows you to take 2 different photos in the same time one from front camera and the other from the rear camera

By the way the screenshot in my previous post is directly from my s7. There was only one picture came out when I took a picture and that picture is the combine of both front and rear camera, the same as seen from viewfinder.
Isn't this what you mean by dual camera/double shot?
I'm confused.

I know what OP is refering to.
That Dual shot thing, I tried it a few months ago, What i got when i viewed the image, Was two images.
A full shot from the rear camera and a full shot of the front camera.
The images where not merged like in the images above (Where it appears you have a stamp ontop of a picture)
Just tested it, And what i get is a normal picture, but when viewed in the top right corner i have a icon, when i press it, it shows the other side of the image.
LOL Figured it out.
Open up the Camera, Activate Dual mode. Top right corner you will see a Camera image with a rear looking camera behind it.
When you click this image, Behold you can set the template.
i.e. Stamp, Split etc etc etc
Images above of Camera, Look at icons on the left side, Its the 5th one up from bottom as your viewing it. (the one below the arrow)

A few more
S7 can no longer hide apps in the app drawer.
S7's keyboard doesn't have press to hold symbols anymore.

Camera quality is ugly

I've got sgs around month ago and already tried many kernels and firmwares but neither of those deal with photo camera shots quality issues. Let me explain - I had Huawei u8220 before and the camera photo shots where nearly perfect, when I get to computer I will try to upload a couple of pictures to see. Now with this high end super phone I get photos of the same quality as my wife's simple nokia but 5mp instead... I wonder if this is hardware of software fault, and if it is software, maybe there is better app available for camera?

The SGS's camera is not the best in the world, but I've been able to make fairly good shots with it. But in the end; just with all phone cameras, it's a tiny sensor with lousy optics. Just use it for what it is for and only use it under the right circumstances (enough light, little movement) and you should be oke.
I don't understand alot of the negative opinons about the sgs camera, it seems perfect for a phone camera, better than all those htc ones and my old nokia n95 one by far, which is all I could really ask for.
don't know what you talking about really.
SGS has a great camera.
Compare the pictures taken by sgs on other websites with yours and see any diffference.
Check setting and camera lens.

I have compared pictures before I purchased sgs and I saw that they are way worth than those from huawei but I thought that is because of taking picture conditions, besides I liked to have this phone,i still do, but here are two shots one from huawei and one from sgs,i didn't pick the best, just random.

The photo compression on the SGS is bad. It would be great if somebody fixedthat and the crappy filters on the video.
if that sgs camera sample is actually indicative of all the pics you take then there is something seriously wrong with your camera, I've never taken a pic that bad. Maybe you're picture quality is on normal, not super fine and its on a low res?
go to camera then go to settings. try to change the resolution from 600x480(not exact) to 2500x1900(not exact) or something like that. I think its a bug cause when i put mine to 2000x1900 it magically changes back to 800x600. just check if you are really using the full 5m.
i also checked the one you uploaded and its just 600x480. may you are just using .3m

the resolution was 2048x1536 and quality superfine why the image got smaller on the post? I dont know, will try to to find shots in approximately same condition. The size of Huawei's 3mp photo is slightly bugger than the SGSs 5mp. By the way, Huawei's camera was set on NORMAL image quality here (fine one would add some strange artefacts so, I never used it)

For me, the Camera on the Outside has a great Quality while the Front Facing camera Picture is useless because its blurry as hell. Like theres extreme Bloom is turned on.
I didnt find any options to change anything on the Frontcam.
Do you have the same prob?

So what are you complaining about. You do not use SGS best quality but use the best quality of the Huwaei. The SGS is still much better if you compare. Both cameras is set to 3mp still the SGS is both sharper (you used the same number of pixel and they should be equal), have correct color, better contrast etc than the Huawie and still it is only roughly the half potential of the SGS (5mp versus 3mp). Strange thread the title should be why does my Huawei take so crapy pictures.
I think the problem is that you seem to prefer saturated pictures, the only problem is that the SGS camera looks 'dull' in comparison? Go fiddle with the settings?
Also, do you still have your huawei? Why don't you take pictures of the same subject matter to compare, instead of taking entirely different types of photos?

Both cameras on last uploaded photos are set to 3 mp, it's max for huawei, but the quality setting for huawei was set to normal and for sgs superfine
To me huawei pics look sharper and sgs ones are dull,
Yes I should experiment with settings of sgs camera and yes,i need to charge huawei and make a few pics of the same object, will be back with results tomorrow after charge.

Ok I figured some options to make photos look better, and even better than huawei - settings-> adjust->+2 on contrast and sharpness and quality photos are there, however,i have to set this option ecru time I start camera, those are not saved for some reason, maybe there are some tricks on how to save options in camera?

i wish i still had the shots i took with my first SGS. they were great! I'd have used them to populate this site

(ok, little plug there)
it's still in the works ...
the SGS is a great little camera/phone! as someone above mentioned, of course it isnt as good as a camera, but take it for what it is and you can get some great shots!
this guide will help too

You know you can touch to zoom on specific ellements right?
Also, the different modes (click SCN) will make a big difference.

I've found that using Vignette, the SGS camera takes better photos.
Always remember, it's not the camera that makes a photographer, especially if you've comparing smartphone cameras. If we were talking about various prime lenses and the like, then it's a lot more serious.
Also, factor in that almost all photos nowadays go through post-processing if you want it to look good. I personally feel that there is nothing wrong with that, if one is just to touch up the photo.
Hence my inclination towards programs like Vignette, which do a lot of the post-processing effects that I like, all within the camera. Excellent feature of Vignette is that it can save both original JPEG (which considerably looks better than the default camera), and the edited JPEG.
Here are some random photos taken using Vignette:
Vignette01
Vignette02
Vignette03
Vignette04
I am in no way affiliated with the makers of the program, nor am I being paid to this. These are all my side on things. I hope it was informative.
Im also using vignette and noticed that right before the photo is taken when the app is trying to focus theres a split second that you will see the images that are very very sharp and great quality, after the photo is snapped it looks dull.

Stretch to fit screen option

So we all know we can stretch the video to fit the screen while we watch YouTube in landscape mode.
But I don't have this! I used my phone 2 days and didn't have it. Then restored the phone installed it again. Now I did have the white little toggle/button to stretch, but not for long. After updating the apps and syncing my accounts and settings the button dissapeared again
The settings are enabled for all apps at 'apps for fullscreen settings'. Everything is enabled here. The weird thing is, when I watch trailers of games in Play Store ( it uses youtube) it does show the toggle and I can stretch it. But when I go to the YouTube app and watch any video on landscape mode, whatever I try it doesn't show up. It doesn't work.
Can anybody help me out with this please? Pretty annoying. Thanks in advance.

I did. It is not there either. In the beginning it was there also. Not anymore.
I have the same problem. Is there a fix for this?
Go to settings> apps> youtube>uninstall updates, return to factory youtube
That just worked for Me
Just tap the screen once in the right hand area while playing videos in the YouTube app and the button will appear. It's also "hidden" for me unless I tap the screen near the right edge.
This is the update , the app was adjusted to full screen as default so you cant stratch it in latest versions , reset the app to factory default
Yes I can. I can both crop to fit and switch back to original format using that little right hand button.
I have no complaints about the YouTube app myself. I was merely suggesting possible solutions for the op.

Here you go. Also, I attached images of both the "crop to fit" and "original" buttons. Those are the little white ones on the right side.

Im having the same issue with my S8+
Crop to fit is different than stretch to fit.
Its actually crops out some of the vid. You can miss headers, footers, or other captions for vids like this. Not to mention content.
Im only getting 2 options with the actual youtube app
"Fit to screen" which has the black bars and doesnt take up the entire screen to keep a certain aspect ratio or "Crop to fit" which takes up the whole screen but cuts out too much of the original video.
If i use the stock Samsung internet browser i can
-go to Youtube websits in Desktop mode/view.
-Select a video.
-Change the view or mode to mobile on the browser. May have to refresh it a couple times to get the Red play button in the middle of the vid.
-Then click the red play button
- Then the Youtube view option will give you 3 different options. "Fit to screen" "Crop to fit" or "Stretch to fit".
The Stretch to fit option gives full screen and doesnt crop out content or parts of the vid.
- However there is no way to change the video quality or resolution when you are using mobile view mode with the browser
So its like I have to choose between having a true full screen picture that doesnt crop out part of the vid VS. Having 720p or 1080p resolution.
This is pretty shocking to me for such a high end device
Why doesnt the youtube app just have a "stretch to fit" option like it does in mobile mode through the web browser????

I get where you're coming from.
Some videos have 3 "modes": original, stretch to fit and crop to fit. But those are few and far between. Most only have the crop to fit option.
In my experience, most videos have the content" centered "and i don't really miss anything but cropping. It depends on the video.
I suggest trying crop to fit and if you come across certain videos where you need all of the image just use the " original "format. Shouldn't be too many of those on YouTube, I think. [emoji53]

Thanks. Unfortunately a majority of the vids I watch have important details listed at the bottom.
What i dont get is the same videos that have 2 options on the youtube app have 3 options on the mobile browser view. Same exact videos. So i dont think its something that varies from vid to vid.
The only dowside with the mobile browser view is you cant switch it to HD resolution.

Tbh, I think you just need to hold tight and wait for youtube/samsung /app developers to figure this out.
It's still very early days for something pretty different from the norm. Growing pains are to be expected.
I expect (actually really hope) this will all be solved in 1-2 months time.
Just hang in there until then.

Honestly, do you think the Note 8 won't have the same aspect ratio?
I'm 100% sure it will. And these issues will be fixed way before then.
So the only realistic reason to wait for the Note 8 would be the S-pen, and not the aspect ratio.
It's up to you, mate.

It doesnt matter if it has the same ratio. If they fix in for the S8s before the Note 8 comes out. Chances are the Note 8 wont suffer from the same thing. So either way im waiting on a fix.
A guy in the other thread pointed out the Note 8 will have a better 4k screen. Maybe a better 4k video cam and options. And a much needed more pratical on screen finger print scanner. I do miss the pen as well.

An on screen fingerprint scanner would be great. S-pen too if you use it. But a 4k screen is a bad idea. Would destroy battery life with no benefits as the human eye can't see the difference on a screen this small.
As for the camera, do you really use 4k video recording that much?
Don't get too caught up in specs and features that you might never use or notice.

I would like to do more than 10 mins worth of 4k recording. I record a lot of car related stuff with my phone.
Good point on the battery life. But im sure there will be options so the screen wont be a battery hog. Just like the S8 +. Battery life is amazing. But if you bump up the brightness and resolution settings the battery goes pretty fast.
Yeah im not going of specs. Just real world stuff i would use it for. Which is why I have such an issue with the weird aspect ratio.
Every time a phone comes out they say you cant visually tell the difference on a screen this small. Yet magically everyone claims it to be be the best screen by far. And to be fair i do notice that the S8+ screen is better than my Note.
4K display would be good for VR, but anything else it is just wasting energy on resolution so small you can't even tell the difference. I had the same dilemma on waiting for the Note 8 or getting the S8+ (loved my Note 7), but I am fine with the S8+ at this point. Doesn't mean I won't be selling it and getting the Note 8 when it comes out, I might, but for now the S8+ is the best phone made. I agree the odd aspect ratio will take some time for app devs to work with, but it will not be much of an issue in a few months most likely.

How to make Mi MIX camera digestible

Hi folks,
i wanted to share some of my insights from 2 days of usage of Mi Mix. As for most, camera was biggest letdown. I knew it was bad, but actual experience exceeded all expectations After some digging and thanks to some threads in xda forum i found a way to make quite decent photos with little sacrifice.
So few things first:
- I'm on rooted LineageOS with Camera API2 unlocked (to be honest i didn't have to unlock it - i suppose it is unlocked with LineageOS? )
- As some noticed before, the hardware isn't that bad, it's software that spoils photos with ugly postprocessing in most cases.
- I'm using Snap Camera HDR - i tried most of software in Google Play and only in it found something like Low Light Mode - if someone know software with similar feature - pls let me know .
So what i did is basically turning off all useless postpro in Snap Camera (sharpenning, denoising, post-processing, anti-banding) and enabled Low Light Mode in all photos . From what i understand i takes series of photos and compare them to make one clean photo. You can choose how many frames to take. More you take the better picture you will get but it will also take more time to process. The processing time is biggest letdown of this method. You can't take another photo during processing so burst mode won't work. I found 5 to be best compromise - it enhances photo noticeably and takes only 1-3s to process. If u can spare more time between photos u can crank it up to 32 - with that count i had really impressive results even with ISO around 1500-2000 but the processing can take 10-30s. Another letdown as you can probably guess is that you can have some issues with moving objects - the darker it gets, the more blurred will they be (slower shutter for every frame).
Now to main dish, examples
All photos taken in 16Mpx without flash or any tripod, all taken form hand for real life comparison. As photo is processed in Snap Camera the jpg lose photo metadata so i only write that data for stock camera, for Snap Camera i write how many frames was set for Low Light Mode. I know it's not very scientific but i take photos in both softwares almost at the same time, in same light conditions and on basic auto modes.
Stock camera on left, Snap Camera on right - I'm posting 100% crops, ill post full pictures if there will be some demand

2. [ISO 1250 1/17s] [5 LLM] - some fine details - fur, fabric, wood texture in mediocre light
3. [ISO 1600 1/17s] [5 LLM] - small details in mediocre light
4. [ISO 160 1/33s] [32 LLM] - outdoor in good light - i took more frames to show some extra foliage details
5. [ISO 6400 1/15s] [32 LLM] - most hardcore example, very bad indoor lighting. Snap Camera algorithm made some wired border around Marshall logo, but apart form that great job.
I hope my post will help some of you with Mi Mix camera, please post your own experiences with camera - maybe there is even better solution for our phones

Big Thx, i will most certainly try it:good:
I'm considering getting this device, but the camera is the main thing holding me back (besides price for last year's SoC...)
Does the Google HDR camera make this acceptable? I don't necessarily need the BEST camera, but I'd prefer relatively fast rate of capture and at least mediocre detail. The initial reviews of the device's camera make it seem like utter trash.
Also consider I want to root the device & install something Lineage based, most devices you sacrifice camera quality when you go this route (because of lack of API 2 / hardware source).

No idea if there is one for it. As i said I found it on AFH, but works on my mix. Perhaps re-downloading by another browser or app?

Unfortunately no, same with edge on desktop and yandex on mobile. Running rooted stock Global MIUI 8.5.5.0.

That's the file link, I thought there is a discussion thread where I could ask for help because of the error. I also got parsing error with other ported Google Camera apks featured in XDA news, other 3rd party camera apps work though.
It's not prerequisite to have Nougat ? Stock Global ROM is under Marshmallow...

Perhaps but see my above post. Anyway it's not a ''wow'' app, just saying.
Received the Nightly OTA today, updated to V9.1.1.0 . Now I am on Nougat, the OP5 port linked in this thread works now , other versions of the google camera get installed but will close immediatly. Just tested it in my room and can't say that I see an improvement, maybe when tested outside at daylight. But I use the google camera anyway because I'm using immersive mode + dpi changes which make stock camera working less stable.
Hi. I updated yesterday to V9.1.1.0 via OTA. I tried the OP5 camera and is does a better job in lower light and image stays in better focus then stock camera. Is the OP5 the same as the google HDR camera. If not, is there a version of google hdr camera that works on Mi Mix without root? Also is there there a way to turn on some type of optical stabilization on stock camera. If I hold it really still when snapping pic the image is a lot sharper. It's actually pretty good. Just not practical to take pictures that way.
EDIT: OK. I guess no OIS on Mix...
I got my mi mix a bit more than a month ago coming from a OP3 and I was shocked by the awful camera of the mi mix. Sorry, I have no other words for it.
The op5 APK seems to make it digestible, but it's still not great. I know that for a GREAT camera I should've picked a different phone, but I didn't expect it to be like this.

Thinking of buying this phone as it's price has fallen a lot. But one thing stops me.

Soooo.. The price of this phone has come down below 20000 rupees, which is approximately 300 dollars. However, I've noticed it only has a single camera, hence not offering that portrait mode. And that bokeh effect is really mouth watering to me.
I looked around the device forums, but couldn't find a good thread about the status of Google Camera on this phone. So, I thought I'd start one. Does Google Camera work well with this device? Right now, I'm basically deciding between this and the Mi5s Plus, but I'm edging slightly towards this because of that AMOLED panel. Am a sucker for AMOLED. Or if anyone can recommend me some other phone under 300 bucks, I'd appreciate it.
My requirements are a SD 821 processor, AMOLED panel, if possible, and a decent camera. The camera should have that sweet bokeh mode tho. I can make a sacrifice for an okay camera if it has an AMOLED panel. Oh, and minimum screen size should be 5.5 inches.
Well if you don't use MIUI then there exists already a solution (I changed to AEX a few days before) and all GCam modes are working perfectly. Only the quality of lowlight pictures is not so good.

Great pics!
Where did u shoot does?
There is a good thread on Google Camera. And the status is that it is working nearly 100% on some custom ROMs!
I got this phone for under 300$ and for that price having a SD821 and 6GB of ram is a steal.
The main issue on the camera front is bad low light performance. With a huge sensor size of 22.6MP, the pixels are too little to get any decent light inside them. There's a good reason why the Google Pixel stuck to just 12MP.
The google camera does make it a bit better, and with good lighting the 22.6MP resolution really shines!

HDR+ is definitively improving pictures, colors are more brilliant without using any additional filter.

Different is the depth of focus and the focus picture is darker. About Video: I'm more a photographer and normally using a Sony A7R but i shot a slow motion video from a waterfall and will try to post a link to that Video.

The left one is with portrait mode.... Google cam store these pics into another directory. The right one is with Focus effect which darken the picture. I got the same effect for panorama pictures where you have to increase brightness afterwards.

This is the thread you're looking for, about a working Google Camera!
You can use it not only with aosp ROMs, but also MIUI, in case you go for MIUI EU or you manage to root an official MIUI Global.
I'm using it with Aosp Extended ROM and picture quality is indeed great, much better than MIUI I'd say, Google really did a heck of an amazing job on HDR+, no wonder everyone wants to also have GCam on their phones lol
Like it was already explained, because of the size of the sensor and the tiny size of the pixels, it struggles a bit with low-light, even on MIUI Camera, using manual controls, but for mid to high lights, artificial or natural, it takes amazing shots, GCam really makes Mi Note 2 camera shine <3
Here goes some samples:
First two were taken at about 5-6pm, when sun was starting to set, light source was natural
Second pic in my bedroom, with the lights on, so an artificial source (it was night)
Third pic was taken in my dark (lights off) bedroom, at night, source being only the notebook screen, so also artificial

Forgot to add: do remember the pics are not full quality, since I uploaded them directly to the forum, I'll add them to my Flickr tomorrow, then share the links so they can be seen full quality!

Poor camera result in dim room.

Hi. I've just get the unit today. It was exynos and I find out the camera was truly bad at dim condition. Even when comparing s20 ultra to note 9, the note 9 picture was much better. I have update my s20 ultra firmware to the latest from Samsung.
Look at the face. The s20 ultra result was having what looks like compression artifact. But it's right out of the camera without any editing. This only happen in dim condition. And also this happens to face only since other than face there's no artifact at all.
S20 ULTRA

NOTE 9
well for one thing it's blurry from the head moving. Second i agree it looks like $hit (no offense to your baby!)
I have no advice other than to say it's unbelievable we could pay $1400 for such an unfinished product..steadily I am losing more and more faith in samsung. At least you were able to get the camera to focus!
We all have similar issues and I think that all of us waiting for the next SW update are customers with a lot of faith. At least Samsung admitted it and if they cannot fix it with the next update then probably most of the phones will be returned.
did you know the 108 megapixel is not on by default? youll have to change the aspect ratio and before you take a picture it should show from the settings which megapixel you are using.
Same. It's very blurry / grainy (yet unnecessarily oversharpened) at the same time in low indoor lighting.

They didn't admit anything. It was I think a Twitter post that said something like "Samsung is committed to delivering the best experience for their customers, blah blah blah constantly working to improve experiences for everyone."
It was generic like that
There was an answer to The Verge that they will work on to deliver the best camera experience. Yes it was generic but camera oriented and it is good that they responded.

If you are using main sensor, could you try using auto mode and Pro mode and share the result to here? Also cna you snap your picture in dim area, since I notice the processing occurred in a dim area was more aggressive than on a bright area.

This. I noticed in your first picture the hair on your child's head is blurry. I have a feeling what happened is there was motion in the photo and in trying to fix the motion created all of the weird artifact effect. you'll notice the hair from your note 9 photo is sharp and clear, likely because there was no motion while the photo was taken.

The movement was indeed making the artifact worsen. But it also happen in no movement condition.
S20 ultra bad image processing
In this pict, the baby wasn't moving much (minimal movement) .
Movement make it worse.
This picture was in very bright room, the child wasn't moving and the artefact still happening, and take a look at the woman on the background. The artefact was really annoying
Yes I agree. I just took a photo of the news on TV and the anchors faces look like oil painting. How could Samsung have screwed up this badly...it's really unbelievable. And how more people aren't making afuss, I also don't understand.

It seems that the artifacts come from very bad hdr stitching. Try to take some photos with scene optimiser and hdr off, although it would probably make very little difference. The reason some other phones like pixel and iPhone cand take better shots of moving subjects is because they use something called zero shutter combined with a faster shutter. It means that the phone takes a lot of pictures before the picture is taken. Now, Samsung also uses a buffer since s9 with dedicated dram for the camera but probably is much lower and their hdr stiching is not as smart as Google's for example (accounting for movement in the frame). After all this time you'd think Samsung would figure this out but not many companies do this sadly). Also the big sensor that gathers more light should allow the phone to use faster shutter and bigger iso without introducing much more noise ala huwei.
