Is there a way to get the camera on the Streak to take pictures faster? I thought we had a fast phone here... why do I have to stay completely still for 15 seconds so I don't end up with blurry images?
If you're not exaggerating you have some serious problems. Either it's not focusing or there's something else eating up processor cycles.
My camera is faster than any phone I've had before, not as fast as a proper digital camera but fast enough.
i do experience a lag as well but not as bad as other phones and it is manageable. I've noticed if you increase the brighntess you don't have to hold too still and causes less motion blur in the pics.
Also look up vignette, its a 3rd party camera app which has many filters and effects.
I have the exact same issue. The camera takes forever to take a picture. I use the fine 2048*1536 resolution and it takes a good ten seconds from button press to shot. If anyone has any advise on how to speed it up, let me know.
Coreth5
On 2.1 (build 8105) it takes about 2 seconds on a bright day when pressing the on-screen shutter button. When using the 2-stage hardware camera button, it takes close to a second to auto-focus on the half-press, and about a half second to take the shot after proceeding to a full press.
It's no speed demon. It seems noticibly slower than my iPhone 3GS on iOS4.
If it's taking 10 seconds, there's someting really wrong.
My settings are Fine, 5MP, GPS ON, and everything else on auto/default.
I do agree that the camera on the streak is dreadful.
Especially compared to my Nexus which also has a 5MP Camera (ported over from the Desire) which takes absolutely amazing photos.
The Streak's photos are always way over saturated, over sharpened and the focusing takes a very long time.
Hopefully this will be improved in 2.2 or maybe we can even port over the camera from the Desire or something
Is it software that controls the camera function or hardware? Is it possible to have an app to improve the camera?

I've tried many different camera apps on the market and whilst they do offer some improvement (image stabilization, etc.) It still is limited by the slow shutter speed.
I imagine it's either hardware controlled and can't be changed (which i doubt) or it's controlled from the Kernel or something (which could offer room for improvement).
I don't know enough about android really, so i could be completely wrong
I've found a few apps that actually take faster pictures. Fast camera, which has a terrible resolution, takes pictures almost instantly. Retro camera (also low res) also takes pictures quickly. I think the camera speed must be limited by the hardware, which is unfortunate as I would say the camera is this device's weak point.
Ive also noticed my camera shutter pretty slow. Its slow indoors mostly. Outdoors is decent though.

I don't get why its a hardware issue. I tried the option in the camera setting to snap four photos in a row. It take great pictures and quickly maybe its because it lowers the resolution.

How did you set that resolution?, on my Dell with Android 2.2 I can only get 640x480 ubber ugly pictures...
Make sure your camera is in 5 MP mode and not VGA...it will set to vga if you've switched to the front camera and then back...when mine does that it takes several seconds to take the picture and then they are grainy and blurry.

I don't see any option to set it up. I'm running Android 2.2 from Dell (no custom firmware)...

Hmmm, it wasn't obvious that you had more options after scrolling. Thanks!
I honestly can't figure out which is better for the life of me.
Stock camera is awesome. But if only I am taking photos with shutter button. On screen button makes the camera focus again after initially locking focus with touch, although it remembers where to focus.
This may cause some lost moments due to delay in shutter speed.
Now, Google Camera, on the other hand, takes photos instantaneously. Much faster than stock camera from my observation. Lock focus with touch, then either on-screen or shutter button takes photos instantly. This makes me a very happy photographer.
But this might mean that I am losing out on Sony-powered enhancements they made for the stock camera, so I am doing various of tests to see which camera is superior.
As for now, both camera takes exceptional photos, but I can noticing differences in color, where Stock makes colors colder where Google makes it bit warmer.
Which camera do you guys prefer?

can you post some samples from both apps
For me stock all the way. I had a phone with very Shutter speed without focus before. Problem was half of my pictures came out blurry. I'd rather wait a milisec for the focus and have a sharp picture than hammering that button and hope for the best plus for me it's always really hard to keep the cam steady when pressing the touch button. As I said half my pictures came out blurry and out of focus with my sgs3. With the z3 every picture is perfect so far. Never had so much fun with a smartphone camera. And that because of the ergonomics and not because of megapixlz.
But why not have both apps side by side and use the one better suited for the situation?

Galaxy phones are the same i guess. I have an s5, previously moto x and iphone 5 user. Never had blur in my photos, but with galaxy s5 out of 10 i take 7 will be blurry but camera quality is really good if its not blurry on the s5 especially day light
Speaking of cameras, can you turn off the shutter sound in either of these camera apps?
I could turn it off on my old xperia acro s, but apparently Sony has decided this feature was too powerful for the z3 compact.

What settings are you guys using for the stock sony cam? I cant seem to get photos that are as sharp as I'd like. They look great on the z3c display, then i look at them on my laptop and am disappointed. Tried SA, manual, 8mp, 15mp, and all sorts of other settings.

Haha ok. Sometimes it's hard to figure tone on the internet. :silly:
Last time I tried the Google Camera it didn't like the 2 stage shutter. I think Sony did a decent number on the Camera app, so will be using it for the time being.
I am also using the default camera app. Its awesome!
I think the google camera needs a overhaul. Its good for just point and shoot but it lacks features. Lets hope Android L apis can help with this.
I figure I'll keep the stock camera as well as Google camera installed for different purposes. Stock camera for everything else, and Google camera for panoramas and photo spheres. Have not compared the difference in panorama shots between stock and google camera yet though.
I found google camera to be worse in low light situations. However the app Camera jb+, gave me better results allround compared to the stock camera.

This is quite weird since I have a "sound" option in the same menu as you posted.. What firmware are you on?
Crazy...then I'd think its based on what country's firmware is installed...I'm from Germany and some users report (on older Sony xperia z's) that they can't disable the shutter sound.
What coutry are you from? Is there a way to get the camera app from another software? I heard there are also complications with DRM

Sweden :good:
Maybe with the google camera app you can switch off the sound
The DRM complications might relate to unlock/root where some lowlight functions get lost for good - but if rooting/unlocking isn't a matter of life and death I wouldn't do it until a safe method is found.
I'm from germany (german stock .77 ROM, no branding etc.) and I have this option.
I'm a Google camera fanboy now. The stock app isn't consistent enough and too much time consuming. I like simplicity above the ultimate shot. Also like the photosphere ability. This way I can relive the moment in VR.
Hey everyone.
Today I searched in store some kind of camera app with macro focus feature (too bad Sony Camera lacks this.)
So I came across Camera FV-5. Nice interface, but still a Sony UI fan. Anyway, besides the macro focus, under Settings I found the option to save pictures as .PNG.
I knew it has a better compression, almost lossless, compared to the common and easy-to-process .JPEG, so I took one photo outside (ISO 50, AutoFocus, a bit lowered exposure) and one indoor (without flash, yellow/orange 60W lightbulb as source of light in the room, same settings as above.)
I was pretty impressed by the quality. It takes some time to process the image fully, Album firstly doesn't even recognize the photo as existent. Afterwards, it takes ages to load the cache when double-tap zoom.
Anyway, see how nice, crisp and clear photos our phones can take - with absolute no post-editing.
Taken with Z3 Compact with Cyberian Camera MOD.
BTW, the files are huge. One is 21.7 MB and the other over 25. That means 1 pixel is over 1 byte. Cool.

Wow - that shot of the candy bar is VERY impressive. Too bad the file size is so ridiculously large. Can you show us the same picture taken using the Sony Superior Auto Mode (8MP)?

I've attached 8MP and 20 MP versions, Superior Auto Mode.
And thanks to Cyberian MOD, I'm lucky to have macro auto-scene on 20MP also.
Also, massive improvement in quality overall, the Z5 Camera libs really work great.
Now that I can see them side by side, it still appears that the Sony camera app reduces noise better than the 3rd party app. I had a similar experience in a comparison thread I created a while back as well.

Hi,
I know that photos are limited to 8MP but what kind of settings exactly and within which range can you apply? Iso range and steps? Shutter speed range and steps? Can you change shutter and iso at the same time? Do the apps adhere to these settings or is there some kind of built in Sony override? Shutter lag?
Can all of the 3rd party camera apps change the same settings or do some have more options, better quality?
Is it possible to have some kind of predictive focus like with the new X series?
Thanks a lot.

Yes it does. But slow shutterspeed still 2,1 mp. Although u can choose a preset shutterspeed on 23mp.
ISO is not adjustable at preset shutterspeed but it is when using custom shutterspeed time (2,1mp)
I think atm this is the best app available for those who want a bit more functionality (Camera2 API) then point and shoot.
For further improvement, Sony should fix their API as it seems incomplete to me.
BTW about predictive focus, there's object tracing focus in Stock Sony camera app. It just isn't as fast as shown in commercials but that will be the case with Xperia x too.
Commercials lie.

So far every camera app I've tried has shutter lag, and it's worse because the camera focuses first when you press the shutter. Stock app is fastest if you use shutter button and half-press to focus first, but it still skips a frame from the moment you press the shutter. The other option... is Facebook messenger which probably just captures a frame from the live feed.
Great that Camera FV-5 has full-res now, wonder how they achieved it.
The Xperia X has a new algorithm that makes things more efficient, and this may also involve the hardware as well. Why couldn't Sony implement this sooner? My friends who have owned Z1 and Z3 say they have shutter lag as well.
At least on my Z5 Premium max resolution on FV-5 is still 8MP. I don't understand what you guys are talking about. Do you have your phones rooted?
I just reinstalled FV-5 a few times. FV-5 claims my phone supports RAW, but after selecting PNG as the file format, the app crashed and wouldn't load anymore. Resetting the phone didn't help. Only reinstalling the app helped.
FV-5 is still completely unusable. I managed to focus a few times and even managed to took one picture. After that FV-5 has not been able to focus and refuses to take any pictures. All it can do is crash.
I still haven't found even one functioning 3rd party camera app for my Z5 Premium.
Ive found that opencamera, manual camera, camera-FV5 have working manual controls
Personally i prefer camera-FV5 As it doesnt oversharpen as much as Manual camera

Based on your suggestion, i tried Open Camera. This is the first time i have full manual control on my Z5 Premium over shutter speed and ISO. Shutter speed is controllable up to 1/10s and ISO between 50 -3200. AF is a problem on this app also, but at least it doesn't crash all the time. I will test this app more.
I remember trying out Open Camera and numerous other camera apps last Christmas. None of the apps worked back then, so at least some positive signs can be seen.

On Open Camera fastest available shutter is 1/10500s. Both shutter speed and ISO can be very finely controlled. There are more available shutter speeds and ISOs than cameras usually have. Yes, ISO and shutter speed can be adjusted at the same time. Open Camera is a free app, so everybody with a Z5 can experiment with it.
Open Camera does not crash like FV-5 does, but physical shutter button (half-pressing) cannot be used for AF. It tries to focus but never locks, as it will just pump the focus aimlessly. When pressing the shutter button fully (or hitting the shutter button on screen), it seems to focus before taking a picture. Weird behavior.

So, basically with open camera we can finally fine tune the iso and shutter speed simultaneously and have full manual control and autofocus working - albeit at 8MP maximum (and on the latest firmware)?
But camera fv-5 can now do the full resolution but can't focus or take a picture? Someone needs to find a way to combine both of these apps...and add longer shutter speeds than 1/10th. That'll be great.

With Open Camera we can control ISO and shutter speed simultaneously. Autofocus certainly does not work properly. With the physical shutter button autofocus is impossible. I just restarted my phone, and now touch focus seems to work. Before the restart, touch focus stopped functioning early on (no focus lock confirmation, even though it looked it focused). So things really aren't smooth.
Open Camera clearly uses only contrast detection auto focus, as it goes through the full focus range every time it focuses. So the focusing is slow by today's standards. Also the shutter lag is even worse than with Sony's own app.

There! Something just happened! Did you take a picture of it? Rate this thread to express how fast the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite can go from "zero to picture". A higher rating indicates that launching the camera app and taking a photo is extremely fast such that you never miss an important moment, like when your cat attacks the couch again.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Sometimes it is superfast, sometimes superslow and sometimes camera opens into all white blank screen and nothing happens
camera is soooo bad, I barely used it,yuck
The camera is pretty fast. Super fast, actually. The app opens immediately, and taking the first picture takes no time at all. And it's pretty well focused. If you want to manually focus a specific point, it takes a lettle more time. But still, pretty fast.
However, the camera sucks. At least the app. I've tried other camera app and thew work a little better, but still... I expected a better camera. I don't know why it has 2 rear cameras. Do they actually do something? Improve light, focusing time, whatever? I cannot see any diference between pictures taken with the secondary camera fisically covered.
Also, did anyone manage to get any good macro picture? You have to shoot really far away from the object in order for the camera to focus it.

Which camera app gave you the best results?

For macro pictures, none. It sucks.
For default settings (auto) and fast photos, the stock app.
For extra functionality, I like the Camera MX app.
And I find interesting the lighting treatment of the camera zoom fx app (under the name of hdr, it combines 3 pictures for normal, max and min exposure). It also gives you tons of customization.
I'll give a try to open camera. Haven't tested it, yet.
I'll say neither of them is the "best" . They all use the same camera hardware. It's personal preference on the image treatment or personalization of the camera settings.
I'll set up magiks asap and I'll give a try with camera2api enabled (camera zoom fx let's you shoot on real manual mode).
I can post a picture of each to compare if you want to.

waiting for the results
I'll take the pictures today and I'll try to post them today, too. If not, tomorrow max.
I'll shoot in default settings and HDR. Outdoors, indoors and low-light (all default settings).
Of you want to see something else, let me know.
I've just installed magisk and enabled camera2API to try gcam and Mi A1 and Mi A2 apps. But the pictures I've taken are with regular apps before doing so. Here the go.

1st column --> Camera MX
2nd column --> Camera Zoom FX
3rd column --> Open Camera
4th column --> Stock camera app
As I said. Not major differences. Except in low light situations where ISO must be well adjusted by the app. I'd choose an app for the user experience more than for picture quality, since they all are pretty similar.
did you find any improvement with gcam?
(that can't use the second camera on the back - correct?)
It's a very generic camera, and with the 2.2 aperture, expecting good results on low lights..well, a stretch. But it does okay for the price. Front camera is rather good and it's probably the only phone in this price range to provide EIS in video which works really well.
Hello, I'm creating an account in order to give my real-life review of this phone. The previous phones I had were HTC One M8, LG G6.
Camera launching speed from the lockscreen and from the drawer is very good, to me. Especially since the Android Pie update.
