Is there any way to disable absolute volume controls, specifically for bluetooth devices that still use the system volume and not it's own independent controls (whether it's an xposed mod, rom, etc.)? I have a pair of powerbeats2 that are useless with any eq because the volume is borked.
There is an option for absolute volume in Android N now.

Love this option. But it keeps turning off for me and have to toggle it again and again.
On Android N, for what it is worth it will stick and work if you set selinux to permissive. Temporary I guess until they fix it.
Here's the issue that's posted to google.

Hi,
When using the youtube app the volume rocker acts as rewind/fast forward and doesnt change the volume. This is really annoying. Is there any way to change this as I dont want to go into a youtube video, assess the volume of the vid, come out of it and then set the handset volume accordingly.
Secondly, is there a way to enable the notification LED to blink when email is received to the handset? Looked in settings but the option to enable it is greyed out...
Seconded on the YouTube thing. What were they thinking? Any tips?
Indeed.... can't really tell you how much I didnt enjoy loading up a gaga video only to have my ears DESTROYED by beyonce's wailing as she was in the song too
I had the first problem for a while too, here's how I fixed it:
-Download, install and start AEButton
-Disable the volume rocker buttons
-Re-enable them
-AEButton will now tell you that it'll restart the device, let it do so
-Fixed
I don't have HD2 yet, but the HTC volume control should have a custom setting for the Youtube app in order for it to work properly. On other HTC devices, it's under HKLM\Software\HTC\VolumeOverlay\InhouseAPClass\YouTube and should be HKLM\Software\HTC\VolumeOverlay\InhouseEnable2ndUI\HTCYOUTUBE. Do you guys have these keys? If not, you can try to create them and value under them, ClassName=HTCYOUTUBE and Enable2ndOverlay=0 respectively. Also, you could try to go to HKLM\Software\HTC\VolumeOverlay\3rdPartyAPClass, create a key there (name it anything, could be YouTube), and ClassName=HTCYOUTUBE under it. The latter hack allows to have the youtube-style volume control in any application (I use it for CorePlayer, for example).
Hope this will work...
Sigh, just found out that when playing a song under the music tab - and you use the volume rocker, surprise surprise it doesnt actually control the volume at all! It controls the track listings.
Bah! This is a STUPID idea, a shame really!!
WHAT??? Volume rocker doesn't control volume during playback? And how are we supposed to do it?
Correct. Unless it's just mine, but I doubt it?
How to control volume you ask? Well that's simple.
You come OUT of the music application and then adjust the volume, and then go back INTO the application..... Logical.
That's a damn stupid design decision. Beside the inconvenience, music player doesn't need to have the same volume level as the rest of the phone! On my HD I have maximum volume for system/ringer, whereas my music player is set to like 20%. When I plug the headphones in and start it, it's set automatically to this level - otherwise I'd be deaf by now.
And does this happen both with the headset plugged in and without it? Again, on Touch HD you can adjust volume even when the device is turned off while music is playing.
So could anyone check the registry keys I mentioned earlier? Hopefully, it's just a missing setting...
Just read my post again on how to fix it, and no, it's not a design decision, it used to just control the volume for me, it only started controlling playback once I used the mediacontrols on the headset.

Volume Rocker
The Volume rocker works perfectly for me in both YouTube & Music player.
volume keys work for volume in both youtube and music for me..
is there anything you've installed that could interfere?
Hi Fards, great to see you in this thread. You were a valuable asset at ironing out bugs & probs when I was using Itjes Xperia ROM's. I'm sure you will be here too.

Now that just makes it a whole lot worse. I had nothing installed when I tested YouTube originally. Volume controls control cue/reverse. Does that mean unit defective?

Maybe different rom?
Lack of attention to details and throughness so often causes user dissatisfaction.

Possibly. Though its a stock rom sim-free unit. Even if its just a software bug or a rom issue, average Joe (or Josephine) shouldn't have to go hacking the registry, or what not, to fix it. Imagine trying to explain that convoluted series of (potentially disastrous) steps just to make your bloody volume button WORK...
Different roms should not justify this oddity.

See entry 24 for solution here:

Indeed, it would appear it is a problem with the headset, damn bizarre.
This is what happened with me anyway...
Listened to music with the headset in and then the volume controls control the track playback, not the volume, whilst you are IN the application. As soon as you come out then yea that's fine it controls the volume again.
When you disconnect the headset, the settings don't seem to revert and once you go back into the music application, the volume rocker still controls the damn playback not the volume......
.... actually i don't know. From using my headset yesterday I've just tried adjusting volume in the music app now this morning and the volume rocker isnt doing ANYTHING when in the music application....
***
Resetting seems to solve the problem, don't know when the problem will re-occur though. To be honest, I don't know how to alter registries and things like that!
oh this is ridiculous there HAS to be a way to fix this.. i dont ever want these to do anything OTHER than volume.
OR have a volume control on the inline
at the moment i have skip controls on the headphones AND skip controls on the side of the phone!
Hey guys, is there a way to customize the volume steps when using the Vol+/- keys? I am using bluetooth headset and the increase per volume + step is way to big, and from 0 (being muted) to +3 is fine, the next step is already way to much, I would like to customize how much of an increase I get when using the volume buttons.
Is that possible without root?
thanks for the help,
cheers
I've had that same issue with my BT speaker, Android N seems to link the volume sliders of the phone and the actual speaker.
Luckily you don't need root to turn this off:
Go to the Developer settings and enable ""Disable max volume", then you're able to have separate volume levels on your smartphone and speaker again.
Cheers

Haven't tried it with bluetooth yet but it should work. This app overrides the default 15 click volume control on android and gives you up to 100 click increments for more fine tuned volume control. Best part is you don't need root.

Found the option! Thanks a lot.
I find that using PowerAmp's Bluetooth setting for "Direct Volume Control" works better than stock since then it adjusts the actual volume of the Bluetooth device rather than the system's output volume.
You have no idea how long i was looking for this solution ("disable max volume").
A thousand thanks!

Can't find absolute volume
This is really upseting. I use this phone just for listening music I have the same problem.
I went to developer options and I don't have the "absolute volume" option avalable. Can anyone help me?
Xperia z3
Android 6.0.1
Thank you very much. It worked on my Xiaomi mi9
Disabling absolute volume in developer settings was really helpful for me. I had a problem with my s20 Ultra because when using bluetooth earphones the volume steps were too big and there were too consecutive steps where the volume was either too quiet or too loud. Now I can control the volume in a finer way.
I have found that each time that I connect my bluetooth audio devices to the phone the volume resets to the loudest setting. The change seems to happen as soon as I start audio the first time after connecting. When I adjust the volume I can see momentarily that it was on a lower setting and then it jumps all the way up to maximum. This has happened with three different brands of headsets. It does not happen with wired earbuds. An app called "Bluetooth Volume Control" will automatically adjust the volume based on the bluetooth device connected. This work reasonably well but not 100% so far. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
Edit: I found a solution for this. In the developer options under the "Networking" heading, there is an option to "Disable absolute volume." Turning this option on allows the volume to stay where I put it.
Well, I love having mine maxed out every time. I had the Nexus6p which did something much more annoying. It would always set the Bluetooth volume to the middle and then I would have to turn it all the way up every time. I set up a Tasker option, but like your app, it didn't work 100% of the time either.

In the past it would have been less of an issue but the combination of the new phone and my newest bluetooth set means that half way is ear damaging. My older sets were less so but are still uncomfortably loud.
My god, I hope no one else complains about this. I can't stand devices that default to a safe volume limit. FYI, when connected via BT, the phone volume is software based and what ever device you are using is hardware based. It is ALWAYS recommended to max out the software volume and then use the hardware (actual device) volume to adjust to your preference. On other phones I would always have to readjust both volumes, not fun. OnePlus does it right.

Not all bluetooth earbuds have volume controls. It would be nice to just have the volume stay where I put it. That would be the "right" way. you could leave it high I could leave it lower.
So I found this. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phascinate.precisevolume&hl=en
It allows granular control over volume, presets for different devices, boosting or reducing the overall volume... etc.
For example, in my car maximum volume is preferred because I would rather use the volume control on the dash, however my wireless earbuds have no volume control and this newest pair have a truly ridiculously loud maximum volume, and I want them to default to about 50 percent. This app lets me set up separate presets for each.
It also lets you adjust the maximum volume and the rate of change when you use the volume controls. This was useful also.
free to use with ads but it is $2.99 to make it useful though.
I think that is problem solved but I wish that I didn't need an app to prevent an automatic volume change. It isn't about loud or soft. It is the fact that I put it where I want it and the phone changes it. In my case these headphones are capable of such loud volumes that starting soft would be preferable.
Here are the headphones by the way. A bit expensive but very worth it.

The Jams are way better than both in every respect.
Finally found a real solution. In the developer options, under the "Networking" section, there is an option to "Disable absolute volume." turning this option on allows the volume to stay where I put it.

I noticed this and had it on but I turned it off, then I noticed that the volume was not staying like it did when I used other bluetooth earbuds. After reading your post, I then reenabled the option and works nicely. I got the IdeaUSA v203 headphones today, and I was trying to keep the volume about the same via bluetooth and aux cable, in-case I ran out of battery and need to plug in aux to use headphones. This works perfectly for me. I use Poweramp and nicely done for this. It says up to 40 hours playback but I think with the way I got it might give me a few hours less playback but I am willing to sacrifice for volume. One reason I love Oreo or higher OS now. My S7 Edge is nice with this.:good:
THANKS! Worked for me!
I have 'disable absolute volume' ON and i still have this problem. Its a very big problem, because having music defaulted to large scares the me so much and also is causing damage to my ears.

Same here. Toggling that did nothing at all.
My issue was that if I took a phone call while any media was playing, when I hung up on the call the media volume would jump to max and playback would resume which DESTROYED my ears.
My solution was to uninstall the Samsung Sound Assistant app and then rebooting my S9. (Because the behavior persisted until rebooted after the uninstall.) That fixed the issue entirely. I miss the functionality of Sound Assistant so I might try reinstalling to see if it works itself out but for now having the problem fixed is very nice.
So I have OOS 5.0.4 with bluspark I use a lot my Bluetooth headphones but when I'm trying to increase the volume little more than medium using the Bluetooth's buttons the volume is not increasing. Is there any way to fix that?
Using phone's buttons to increase volume is working just fine.

Completely agree on it being annoying. I'v very surprised that Google chose to make this the standard for Android Pie. I don't understand the logic at all.
I completely agree, it makes no sense at all. The old system worked perfectly and made more sense - you only need to adjust media volume WHEN MEDIA IS PLAYING. The rest of the time the rocker should adjust ringer/notification volume.
I made a thread about this very thing a few weeks ago and was told by most people that I'm the one with the problem because why would I ever need to adjust my ringer volume on a regular basis. I guess some people don't want louder volume during the day and quieter at night.
