What ROM will you suggest? - Nexus S General

Hi guys,
my wife's phone died, so I found my brother's old nexus s. With official ROM it's kind of slow, so is there any custom ROM you will suggest to install? As long as is fast and stable, that's fine
Thx

There's a chart for that...
For my mom (she has my ns) I put jellybean 4.1.2 jz054m on it with the aosp 3.0.71 aosp devil kernel.. No features, but xposed is a thing.. Before I shipped it I tested it at 7days standby time or 3-4hrs sot.. Not fast, but for crespo it is.. 284/283 on geekbench..

Thx mate, will try it later today

I find Cyanogen 11 quite usable. There are "nightly" versions that even contain security updates from 2016. Older Android versions might be attackable due to various security holes.

I would install Nexus S Nightly build: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=crespo
For Google Play you'll need CM 11 "small" gapps.
Basically Android 4.4.4 with the Android Security Bulletins patched in. Just checked with AndroidVTS. And according to the app cm-11-20160523 is still vulnerable to CVE-2015-3636 (nasty apps can gain root) and CVE-2015-6616.
I might take a stab at getting that patched. But I have no clue where to go, since the Cyanogenmod JIRA bug tracker doesn't even contain a 'crespo' device anymore.

I already complained about that (See http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-s/development/unable-to-create-bug-report-cm11-jira-t3357978). It seems that CM11 has been more or less been abandoned by Cyanogen, and the "nightly builds" run unattendedly. Maybe the only way to really remove bugs or improve the system is to get the source code and run the compiler.

[Q] Stock 4.3 / CM 10.1 or wait for 10.2

Hi,
I just got a Nexus 4 and love the device. I come from a HTC Sensation and used to run CM.
I am running stock 4.3, non rooted but lack some options.
I would like to ask your advice on what to do, should I;
- Unlock / root and flash CM 10.1? (should I flash a custom kernel?)
or
- Stay on stock until a stable CM 10.2 releases or wont this release for a couple of months?
I dont want to hassle with nightly builds, just want a stable daily driver and dont want to flash every week.
Thanks guys!
Wait for 10.2. Kindle fire CM 10.2 has already been released so I can imagine that it won't be long.

I hope you do realize that even nightly releases are quite stable on the Nexus 4? Unless you're doing some hardcore mission critical work, I'd say 10.2 nightlies are just as stable as 10.1
I'm not one of those flashaholics who will flash broken builds and half broken features just to have the latest new gimmick, so when I'm telling you it's solid, I mean it. CM10.2/Android 4.3 does have its issues, and I'd say the biggest is the battery drain issue that has to do with location services. If you're willing to disable half the features of location services, then the issue is less apparent, but to me 10.2 is good enough for me to run as a daily driver. I'd say the issue is more of an Android 4.3 rather than a CM 10.2 issue. So even if you go with a stable ROM like AOSP, you're doomed with battery the same as CM.

Thanks, I didnt realise this, the experience I had with nighly releases is not that good. After reading this I am considering to flash 10.2
I tried 4.3 and liked it quite a bit but I decided to stay on my favourite ROM (not cm but sabermod) on 4.2.2 until it gets updated to 4.3
and I haven't looked back

CM12 Nightlies - any good

What is the consensus on the CM12 nightly builds?
Is anybody using them?
I just got my 9506 and all I really want out of a rom is the stock look, like Nexus or GPE, which CM provides.

If you are hard gamer, I recommend you to use official CM12. I've tested both and seems like theres serious graphical issues in arters cm12. But both are good for daily use, battery life is little bit worse in arter cm12. Theres not much differencies.
The consensus is that Temasek rom built by @arter97 is the BEST rom for our device, even better than touchwiz rom, and of course better than official cm builds.

I do not agree the official cm12 by the time will be better because of it's easier to handle, flash and has OTA update.
Can someone please explain what the main differences/goals are between the three major ROMS are? (official cm12, solk2, and arter97/temasek) Looking around the forum, I can't seem to find anything closer than "X is better than Y" and "The difference is in tuning" and other vague things like that

Yeah and they have better support to rom. I mean they update it every day etc..
Arters rom is based on temasek moded version of CM12 - it does include a bit more than the barebone CM12. It is rock solid and by far good enough to be a daily driver. I found it to be great with games (as a reply to another post here). Played Star Wars Kotor on it for hours, it ran perfectly and did not get hot.
The "official" CM12 I have not tried, but it seems to be lagging a lot behind arter. They had, or still have?, problems with wifi/mobile nettwork and other stuff. Does not seem to be a daily driver yet.
I just don't get why you guyz think that easy flashing and faster releases is a positive feature in terms of rom stability.
I'm quite happy with updates arter releases, they are stable and battery friendly, besides it have all goodies from temasek rom.
Don't wanna be a flashaholic!
I don't want to be a flashaholic either. Maybe when official gets a snapshot version, or milestone, but that may never happen looking at the history.
I was using CM11 on the previous 9505 but everything changed with Lollipop.

I was looking very skeptic when it was available, but I was amazed how stable and fast it was.
Started with v1, I`m using arters build and had ZERO accidental restart, (FC, camera can`t connect and etc... ) or any bug that affects daily usage. I came from M12 i9300 CM11.
Does casting work? Moving apps to SD?
Casting works fine with Chromecast. Accessible from quick pulldown panel.
Move 2 sd is broken, it`s CM bug.

Gotcha, the rom I was using with the 9505 did not have cast working and SD moving was also broken.
For me official cm12 is the best and always up to date. I tried mokeedev, arter, solk and back to official
I think I will try official cm12 when there is a at least a snapshot build.
What's broken in it at the moment, anything? What camera do you use?
I update daily with last nightly. For my usages nothing's broken. Very stable. I use Google camera.
Do you have a chrome cast? Can you connect to it?

UK GT-I9505: Is there a Cyanogenmod 12 or 12.1 nightly?

I'll admit I get completely baffled with all the S4 variants.
1. Put simply is there a UK GT-I9505 Cyanogenmod 12 or 12.1 nightly?
2. What's device name to Cyanogenmod call it?
My GT-I9505 is from Everything Everywhere in the UK (who still haven't released lollipop).
Thanks
1. Yes.
2. jfltexx.
Perfect. Thanks.
jfltexx Snapshots stopped in February 2014 with M3. Which is weird as my LG G Pad last got a stable build in November 2014 with M12. That's a bit worrying if I want a stable/reliable CM build.
p.s. Stable being used generally. I'm aware CM used to use Stable as a specific naming convention.

Nightlies are more stable then the snapshots. So don't let naming misguide you. Just go for either the nightlies or the one in my signature. Ps go for the 12.1 branch, more stable then the 12 branch.
Really?
I thought the whole point was Stables were signed off?
Nightlies also updated daily which is bewildering. I just want a stable Android 5.1 release really. I'm not especially interested in the "cutting edge".
Thanks

The thing is: a rom may work perfectly for me and for you it gives various problems.
Bugs vary from device to device.
For instance, most roms I have tried on my device have worked perfectly (Thankfully).
But I saw other people who reported various issues with the same rom.
You will have to try for yourself.
the GPE rom by Danvdh is one of the most stable roms I have tried. It's still 5.0.1 though.
Resurrection Remix with Alucard kernel also works fine for me.
You might also try FlexOS. People say it has nice battery life.
AICP was also stable for me.
SaberMod CM12.1 stable too. But haven't tried it for some time.
They are all based on CM12.1.
You might also try the official CM12.1 Optimized build.

I'd rather stick with a stable ROM that's been signed off and had some quality control applied to it for that very reason. I prefer to just install a ROM and be done with it (maybe upgrading every now and again OTA) .
Like you say otherwise you could be fine (probably) or maybe not.

Interesting idea. Is this much more optimised for the S4 than the regular CM12.1 nightlies?
Being a fork isn't there a chance it'll get out of sync with the CM12.1 nightlies?
Thanks for the info on the other ROMs.

The optimized builds are developed by the same developer as the nightlies for the s4. So they pretty much go head to head.
Oh nice thanks.
Do the latest CM12.1 nightlies have the ability to turn the S4 legacy Menu button into an App-Switcher button? It's irritating having to hold down the Home button to switch between apps.
Lastly, is there anything major left in CM11 not in CM12.1 now? Is there a list somewhere?
I understand missing features is one of the reasons a CM12.1 Snapshot hasn't been released.

+1 for the CM12.1 Optimized build. I had low mobile signal which resulting in big battery drain in the otherwise awesome Danvdh 5.0.1 GPE rom. Had to ditch it.

Why are the optimized builds so far behind? The latest CM12.1 optimized build for the S4 looks to be 2015-06-16 but there's a regular CM12.1 nightly dated 2015-06-25.

yes VGchat you are 'in', have PM'd you and I will get you instructions and a dropbox link to download later tonight.
I should also say that this rom is basically CM13 with RR built on top and is a stable as CM13 currently is on N5110 (that is VERY stable).
So far I just got it installed. I notice it's still CM warm, it's a tad toasty compared to CivZ rom I had on previously and compared to other CM13 roms for this device, the heat trend continues on the underside. Which cpu governer would work best with this tablet for battery life/performance/stability?
Youtube seems to run perfectly.
Stylus support is detecting and interacting with the Stylus just fine.
There is a faint bit of static feedback now & then from Bejeweled Stars but it plays better than it did on CivZ rom. Less laggy.
Overall the UI is pretty fast & smooth.
There doesn't seem to be any GPS issues. One Weather can find my location just fine.
I'm not sure how demanding a game this one is but Giant Boulder of Death pushes this tablet to it's limits almost. Noticeable input lag sometimes and music lag is definitely noticeable.
There is a issue with video recording. It will not do it, instead it spits out an error about it as you mentioned in your PM. However it can take pictures.
Thanks VGchat for your comments.
Video recording not working comes from CM13 I'm sure. Everything else sounds pretty good.
Unkilled runs pretty well in game for me, though cutscenes are a little stuttery.
The heat issue I'm hoping is just from initial setup, cataloguing media files etc. and will have settled in a couple of days.
I don't know what governor would be recommended, it seems to use pegasusq by default.
I will try Boeffla kernel over the weekend, which should work as it does with equivalent CM13.
I'll look to making a release thread at the start of next week, if anyone wants it before just PM me.
Maybe you'll be able to fix the camera issue with this thread, GL.

N5100 version
I have also made an N5100 version and passed to A_sh_ to see if it runs...
I have also confirmed by restoring my backup that the video problem originates in CM13.
If you need a N5100 tester you can count me in. Running RR on my bacon
So long as you keep Boeffla seperate from the rom, I'll be fine with that. I never did care much for Boeffla Kernel on my Note 8. (I tried it on the civz rom and the other popular cm13 rom, with less then impressive results). I think the Kernel Adiutor is working pretty good for this rom.

You mean when N / CM14 comes about?
Depends on what RR team do and whether an official / unofficial CM14 is made for Note 8.0 or whether MM is the end of the line...
I'm sure RR will continue with N as they have been going since ICS.
If I still have the tablet, want to keep updating it and am able to continue, then I will.
N5120
Wot no N5120 requests yet???
I have an N5120 build also sitting waiting on AFH for a beta tester to come along and gobble it up..

It would be great if you update it to N, but I was simply talking about CM 13,when new nightly are released.
Ah! I initially thought you meant nightlies then thought nah, gotta be N you're enquiring about...
Yes to nightlies - the beta testers have had 2 nightlies so far.
I can usually find time to make 2 builds per night every couple of nights. Builds take my laptop around an hour each (8 core i7..).
Current builds with testers, which will hopefully be released, were synced at about 7pm uk time on the 20th and include all CM changes up to "you are now a developer" which I felt was the ideal point to call it a release ????
https://www.cmxlog.com/13/n5110
If you want access now just follow me on android file host and I will add you to the beta group.
Thanks for your answer. Of course I didn't think you could update the Rom every CM nightly, I was just wondering if it's easy for you to update sometimes without having to work too much. I can't be a beta tester at the moment, but I'm thinking of trying a new Rom sooner or later: I'm still using a kitkat firmware and, after some years, I feel a little bored
You don't grab specifically by nightlies, just the latest on what is there for both CM and RR. To grab and make a new build it is just 3 command line commands. Once you are setup it is very easy.

Ok, so far it's running great. I haven't gotten to really dig deep into it like I planned due to a busy day, but I did learn that YouTube still runs like trash. I honestly think it's the app, not the ROM, since it has been this way across several ROMs, and more than a couple devices. I found a little bit of screen flicker when plugged in and in landscape view. This cleared up immediately by disabling ambient display (which I don't think is even usable on the nooks anyway). Other than this, I have nothing to report, all is working as desired!

Ahh, good old amaces. He's been at it for a long time too! I bounce around ROMs from time to time depending on what I want to use my Ovation for. His ROMs are pretty solid and stable too, but I wanted to give old-school KK a try again. I've alwayse liked the split-screen menu layout it used over the newer versions too.

Would you know if UA hummingbird AOSP 7.1.2 is stable? I might try it after school.

I used to have a working Hummingbird, but it's got a bad battery, and I haven't replaced it yet, so I'm not quite as versed on it as the Ovation anymore. I do know that he's got a following of people that test on the Hummingbird since he doesn't have one himself, and aside for trivial things like the boot screen's orientation being upside down, his' ROMs are known for being quite stable. I remember my Hummingbird feeling faster then my Ovation, but that's also due to the GPU not being taxed as hard as it is on that 1080p display. I remember I had MANY hours of use in on that Hummingbird with his ROMs at the hands of my kids. So much use the battery wore out. Never had any issues with it on the software side that I remember. Now you have me wondering if I can mod mine to fit an ovation-ish battery into it for longer life...

I haven't tried, or heard of before now, unlegacy on my ovation. So far, your ROM is a very well done re-release of CM11. As for the other, newer ROMs on Ovation, yes, they run quite well. I've only tried amaces' ROMs, and he put a lot of hours, and software tweaking magic into getting it to runt he way it does. I'm going to try this new stuff tonight I think. Just to see what it's about.
Update: I can't get Un-Legacy to boot, so I would say it's not as stable as hoped

Thanks.
Strange, I used it for the first time on hummingbird, and it boots.
Yea same, I only used CM and @amaces ROMs.
I can't wait to try Android Oreo on Nook HD, and if it ever comes out for the Galaxy Tab 2.

Sorry, did you flash the LineageOS 11 (4.4.4) ROM or the 7.1.2 one also mentioned in this post? My previous experience with anything newer than KitKat on this device was that performance was too slow. I'm back on CM 11 at the moment but would be tempted to flash a newer ROM.

I flashed the recommended 7.1.2 and seems to work great for my use. I use it mostly as a media player in my shop. for google music, tunein, iHeart, and HDHomeRun, but HD HOMErun stops streaming after 30 seconds, must be due to 512meg memory on the system. But Plex works with out an issue.
Its connected to a car radio in my shop and works great and responsive. I do leave it plugged in beacuse its always in the same spot.
Thanks again, if I start having any issue,' ill let you know.

I do have both a hummingbird and Ovation - both on the old 4.4.4 ROMs as anything newer had too much lag. Which ROM exactly are you trying to install and what recovery version are you on? I seem to remember that the 4.x ROMs needed the old recovery to install.

It gives me an error for all recoveries. Can you make a TWRP backup of hummingbird factory re-set LineageOS 11, and send me it? CM official givers errors and LineageOS 11.
