Does anyone know how to decrease even more it, beyond the minimal in the settings?
I think that minimal level is still pretty 'strong' when you are reading in a dark room.

The screen filter app is reported to drain battery. Google it and you will see. I can confirm personally that I was seeing drain with it compared to without. It will not show under the batter tracker.

Screen filter on the nexus one helped a little. On min brightness an all black screen pulls 100 mA, and with screen filter on additional 30% pulled 85-90 mA. Wasn't a huge difference really.

I use screen filter and after a 9 hour day at work (phone unplugged for ~10hours) which I text, browse, and make calls on my phone I usually leave ~60-70% left on the battery.
CM7 will let you customize the screen brightness from 1 to 255. The phone screen doesn't show all colors past 4 though.

What do you mean past 4?
On your CM7 installed phone go to: Menu-Settings-CyanogenMod Settings-Display-Automatic backlight
You have to choose automatic screen brightness adjustment for this to work.
In lights levels section you can enable custom screen brightness levels. Make sure your "Screen dim level" setting is set to 1 to be able to go all the way to setting of 1. Now, go and choose "Edit other levels". In here you can specify, based on light sensor value, the screen lux value you wish to have along with the button value (the led button lights) my buttons don't seem to dim so I'm not sure if your device will. All values go from 1-255 (as long as you changed screen dim level to 1).
Anyway, play around in it and you can set your phone to do all the screen brightness adjustments for you as dim and as bright as you want.
Now, on my super AMOLED screen, when I pick anything below setting of 4 the screen looses some colors so that's why there is no point of setting it any lower.
Also, my light sensor has only 8 stages of lux recognition. They are 10,160,225,320,640,1280,2600,10240 (but 3000 seems to be the max you can set so the last will just max out anyway).
So in order to fake other numbers in between, the CM team came up with a filter which moves around at a specified interval from one setting to another. You can enable that filter at the very top option before you choose "Edit other levels..."
Have fun.
One other thing to add is that this can save a tone of battery as well as go easy on your eyes at night. You just have to figure out what the best settings are for you. Once you play with it for a while you'll figure it out. It took me a few days to come up with settings that work.
Hi,
I bought a Nexus 7 32GB Wifi version yesterday from Carphonewarehouse.
I brought it home and it asked to update, I let it update to 4.2, with automatic brightness my screen is very dim, I mean its not nice to view with automatic brightness as it seems to dim the screen to much.
I know people are having problems with latest update etc, as I updated immediately when turning on device etc I cannot be sure if this is due to the update or it was like it before the update, I would like to use automatic brightness to conserve power but it seems to dim the brightness to much and I also notice the brightness level adjusts quite a bit in same lighting and is very noticeable when viewing screen.
When using full brightness the screens brilliant.
Is this part of the 4.2 bugs ?
I disabled auto sync for Google Currents to help some performance issues for now.
As this is my first tablet and updated immediately I can't compare differences between updates to know if its just a bug.
How long does it take to charge the tablet fully approx ? as mine seems to take ages, again I am aware this is possibly another bug after 4.2 update.
PS: I here that I should have got a £15 Google credit but never got an email and I had to pay by card when I purchased a £2 app as no option to choose Google credit only to pay by card. Was this a limited time offer or something as am gutted I not got it ?
Thanks for any help/advice!

Hi,
Unfortunately the screen flickers issue is a well known issue to nexus 7. Since you just bought it, I would recommend exchange it and hope you get a good one. Mine is having the same issue but I kinda get used to it. Good luck...

If automatic brightness does not work the way you want turn it off. Flicker gone.
It is a checkbox under settings / display.
I like mine best with brightness set to about 50%. An added bonus is that really extends battery life.
I highly suggest giving lux a try. I bought it because I found the minimum brightness on the n7 was too bright for night reading. It has a lot of settings to tailor the auto brightness to your taste. I turned off the android auto brightness and set the manual brightness almost all the way down and let lux adjust it from there.
4.2 totally screwed up automatic brightness, made it super sensitive. best option right now is to turn it off and change thaw brightness manually
Thanks everyone for replying, gonna just turn off auto brightness and set it to 50%, its ok at 50%, thanks much appreciated!
Fingers crossed an update will sort the sensitivity out.

What does the flicker everyone refers to about auto brightness look like? I don't think I experience this issue. It may be the lighting I have around doesn't cause it.
What I DO have an issue with is low brightness either manual or auto in dim rooms where I don't want to be blinded, is the flickering caused by WiFi signal being low. This isn't the same issue others refer to here is it?

If it flickers on manual - you have a different issue.
Some devices have screens that are significantly dimmer than others on all brightness settings (I've had 4 so I should know). I've got an n7 that the screen is virtually unusable on auto under some conditions. I complained and got a replacement and they've never bothered picking up the faulty one. My Mrs has it now and it doesn't bother her but, side by side with my n7, its a massive difference. If it bothers you return it because it'll really get on your nerves after a while.

my device died anyway so took back for replacement. I decided not to update to 4.2 as auto brightness works excellent without update and no bugs either so will wait for a more stable update, much happier now. Thanks!

When I put my phone on the charging orb, sometimes the screen comes on and I get the notification sound to indicate it's charging, sometimes I don't. Either way it charges. What gives?

No, that's not it at all. My ringer is always on, yet I get the notification about 20% of the time and no notification about 80% of the time.
If I had to guess, it has something to do with charge level and time since last on charger. If the charge level is below a certain amount (60% or so, don't know the exact #) AND it's been awhile since the phone was on the charger, I get the notification almost evry time. If the charge is high OR the phone was recently on the charger, I get no notification (but it still charges fine).
Google probably did this so that it doesn't disturb you when you put it on the charger for a touch up during the day. I just want to know what the exact parameters are and if there's a way to modify them.

Completely stock.
I saw another site that said the notification plays anytime the battery is under 90%.
But that can't be right either. Yesterday I got the notification when I put it on and it had 91% at the time, later in the day I put it on the charger at 59% and no notification.
It seems random.
Mine does it too and when the sound comes on it only plays a millisecond of it sometimes and plays the full charging noise sometimes ... I'm rooted on project E.L.E with faux kernel so I figured it had something to do with that so didn't think too much about it

if I put the manual slider on 100%, and then tick the "automatic brightness", it stays at 100%, even in a fully darkened room.
if I put the manual slider on 0%, and then tick the "automatic brightness", it stays at 0%, even under direct sunlight.
What gives ? LG forgot to program this feature ?

I am not certain on this but my understanding of how the auto brightness works is that it adjusts within a certain % up or down of where you set the slider.
I am sure someone with a bit more knowledge will be along shortly to advise exactly how it works though
It appears to me that the 100% and 0% always do full on or full dimmed, whether you set auto brightness or not. Anywhere in between it does work with auto brightness, but the screen reacts quite slowly.
Auto brightness on this device is rubbish. Period. It doesn't work at all when you're set on 100 or 0 percent, and if you're in between, it works, but only buy using very slight changes to the manual setting that you chose. Why on earth did they base the auto brightness on the manual brightness???

auto brightness works quite well for me. I have it set as a 55% baseline and it always changes in more or less light. It takes a second but it will do it and works great. The slider does not show the change though.

No, it doesn't work well for you at all. If you put it at 55%, and go to direct sunlight, it will never come close to 100% brightness (I would say only about 60-70%). Moreover, if you go to a pitch black room, you will not get 1-2% brightness, rather ~30-40%. I would say the automatic brightness control of the G2, can only play with ~10% above/below what you set your manual settings. Who does automatic brightness like this ? pathetic and useless.

I also use a 3rd party program to control brightness. My phone would just randomly uncheck auto brightness on its own. Not sure why it sucks so bad on this phone. So, check out Velis Auto Brightness in the play store. It disables system management of brightness, takes over the job.

I used to use Velis too but it was a bit too cluttered for me. Lux was a whole lot more userfriendly. Plus it can reduce brightness below minimum levels and has a built in night mode that activates automatically. Found it best for my use.

whether it goes to 100% brightness or not it brightens up enough that I can see it clear as day. So why do I care if it doesn't get to 100%?

and like I said, why do I care if it is changing brightness to levels I can see for the given light I'm in what does it matter? Apparently it is doing something right.
Have seen a lot of varied answers on this topic but having owned an iPhone in the past LG has set up their brightness controls to work in much the same way. You basically have two independent controls that can be combined to work together.
For example, I have my brightness on 85% and Auto is checked to ON. This means brightness will adjust automatically but never exceed 85%. You are setting a ceiling and it will NEVER go to 100% bright if set this way. If I turn Auto OFF, its always 85% regardless of ambient light. Hope this helps some peeps understand this better. I actually prefer their implementation but it's familiar to me.

This explanation contains logic, while LG's automatic brightness control, contains none. If you set brightness at 85%, and turn automatic brightness ON, assuming 85% set the top ceiling, then going into a pitch black room will still allow the LG to turn brightness to something like 5%. In reality, it doesn't happen, even in pitch black rooms, the LG is still close to 85% (maybe 65%), which is totally blinding. If you want to see how a working automatic brightness control behave, install lux brightness control.

I don't disagree with this at all....I'm still observing some odd/unexpected behavior and you're right.....it doesn't seem like there is enough 'travel range' when using auto in very dark environments. 85% in regular/full light should scale down dramatically in a dark room...one would think?
I actually prefer my screen brighter though so this hasn't bothered me, but that is personal preference and definitely not one size fits all. I have used the built-in controls on CM based ROMs on a few of my other devices before the G2 and you get much more fine-grained control there. I will say though that as far as the stock brightness controls go, the G2 behaves identically to the 2 iPhones I've used. If anyone reading is interested and has a friend with an iPhone, hop into the settings and look at the brightness controls. I think you'll see where LG drew some inspiration.
Loving this phone overall....best I've owned so far! I purchased off contract and sold my Droid RAZR MAXX HD on Swappa....couldn't be happier.

You are right that the auto brightness should go from zero to 100% depends on the available light but all the brands i used have the same auto brightness.
I think it's something related to android.

A lot of ROMs and apps now let you use the notification light as a battery light.... It'll show when it's charging, charged or getting low. I put my phone on a charger at 11pm and take it off at 7:30 or 8:00am, so that's about 9 hours every night. I also, usually, throw it on the charger at work for a few hours at the end of the day to give it a 100% charge for the trip home (or while in the car I charge it). That's not counting all the text and email notifications I get that make it blink all day.
I question the longevity, or durability of the light? Are these generally long lasting LED bulbs? Not sure it was meant to be used as a charging light?
I'd rather sacrifice a little now, as far as cool lighting effects and still have a notification light in 2 years (if I ever kept a phone that long, or when I give it to my son), rather than burn out the LED and have nothing in 2 years.
Am I over thinking this?
I'd imagine it'd be fine. Just look at pretty much any modern-day Samsung phone - they use the LED for charging indication by default. I also have my 6P set up like this since I liked that feature on my Note 4.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I've never seen one of these LEDs die.... Not saying it can't happen, but even on some nearly 4-year old Galaxy S III phones, the LEDs still work
Why would it die? I always set these on my older phones and they work like new, not even the brightness dims.
LEDs are built to last, AMOLED isn't
