Had my S7 Edge for just over a week and absolutely love the phone.
However, gaming is a massive disappointment. Real Racing 3 is often stuttering to the point where it is unplayable.
Fortunately I know why; the RAM usage is hovering around 70-80% seemingly not leaving enough for the game.
Once I close a handful of running apps, the game is smooth for about 2 minutes which is when the apps restart.
Some of the most common apps continuously running/restarting:
Chrome
Word
One Drive
360 Security
Internet (can't delete)
Weather (can't delete)
+ loads of default apps which I am not familiar with. Btw - my phone was not infested with lots of bloatware.
I could delete more apps, but I installed them because I need them. Surely that defeats the point of the phone.
Many apps are advertised as being able to shut down unwanted stuff, but there is no option to permanently disable system apps or event prevent user installed apps restarting. Is rooting the phone my only option?
What version do you have? I have G935F and RR3 is running like a dream on mine with multiple apps open/in ram
I have the same version. How much ram to you usually have free?
Haven't encountered that issue during my usage of the S7 edge, so it could be a software issue. In case you want to disable unwanted apps without rooting, you can try the Debloater tool. Basically, it disables apps, so that they won't run in the background or be accessible at all - it removes them from the app drawer too. You'd have to be careful if there are some services you actually use and don't want to disable them inadvertedly.
Which update is running on your s7?
I have usually 1.6gb ram free before I start playing games...during game play it drops to 1gb ram free....baseband is G935FXXU1APD9. Got the update a week ago

Sounds promising. My baseband is G935FXXU1APD1. What exactly does this new update do? There is not description of it for some reason:
https://samsung-firmware.org/download/Galaxy-S7-edge/7u3f/XFA/G935FXXU1APDH/G935FOJV1APD8/
Uninstall 360 Security ASAP. It's known to be adware, and the app in general is complete garbage. Why on earth would you install it? Don't install any anti virus crap.
Also, the latest version of Pushbullet has a bug that rapes the CPU, so uninstall it too for now, if you have it installed.
root and then run the debloat script. job done

Thought it might be good to have extra security and it was a top rated app. I guess the default antivirus is sufficient - deleted!
To be honest it didn't consume too much ram - even with that uninstalled it still consumes 70+ %
No pushbullet installed.
Got the EZ Package Disabler which seems to be able to get rid of any app - user- or factory installed - so I just need to figure out which ones are safe to get rid of.
Problem is that I need some of the apps - if I could just prevent them from autostarting rather than deleting

Now when installed a lot of apps including juicedefender and advanced task killer (set to aggressive when screen off with lots of exclusions) the lag has become more of an issue.
Now tell me whats the logic behind having installed a lot of apps and a lag? Running several apps multitasked will offcource produce performance-dips but just having them installed?
What exactly is "aggressive" on the task killer anyway? Some people say its just bad to kill tasks.
I have the idea that its the widgets that causes trouble, since they actually needs to run in the background all the time. I noticed today that the fancy-widget got stuck on upboot for like 60 seconds, that caused the 4 buttons below to not load properly. Alto the rather useless "daily brefing" seems to slow down.
I dont want to root and hack with sd-hacks now when froyo is confirmed to be released officially soon.
Do you have experice with sertain apps/widgets causing lag. If so, it would be great to make a list of "bad" apps.
PS, I tested the 30-day navigon today in car and it worked with no problems at all. Fix in 2 seconds and right on track.

I haven't used it in a while, but "spare parts" in the marketplace tells you which apps are consuming your processor IIRC. This will obviously give you a temporary hit to your ability to load and run processes but will let you know more details about your phone that you don't already have and the battery use section of settings obviously only talks about what is using your battery but that isn't going to tell you the whole picture.
I am also someone who says you shouldn't use ATK, at least the way you do, but I have it installed and use it a bit differently. What I try to do is kill all tasks after I've used the marketplace or before I do anything intensive (gaming, GPS tracking) and I kill all apps including ATK. ATK will consume processor, battery and will free up memory which then Android uses to open more tasks you don't need (using processor and battery in the process -> repeat cycle). If you need to free up memory 1-5 times a day I think my way will save maybe 15-30% of your battery over a 24 hour period while costing you less than a minute of hassle (too much for some, sure). Again, I only kill after marketplace (because everything opens to check for updates, AFAIK) and before something that will use heavy memory and processor.

Forgot the first part of your question, forgive me. I believe, the reason for more apps causing more lag is at least 2 fold. There are more apps that can be opened when you have free memory (in the vicious cycle I described above). There is also something that might be a bit unique to our phone, and I've only recently read this, it's a bit of speculation so I'm not trying to pass it off as fact but I think it's likely to be knowledgeable on the issue, even if not completely correct. Samsung's internal storage method is an SD card, that allows extra apps to be written to the internal storage but comes with a trade off of lag due to a potential combination of:
slow random-access
bad partition
I think I'm missing an important reason, I'll try to look and edit.
When I initially got my SGS I loaded it with a heap of apps and suddenly noticed the lag and quick battery drain. Problem was I couldn't track down the culprit.
I recently reset my device and was a bit more organized with what I installed. One of the things I started doing was checking what services were being used in the process which you can find under the manage apps part of the system.
So while you can load apps and they may/may not be killed by android or a task killer, the services will always be running - taking up memory, sometimes cpu, network. Things like weather checking, news checking, even email sync are some examples. These services plus any apps you run are I think what starts the lag. You need to be aware of which apps are also run as services.
Yes, there are some bad apps (last Facebook version was found to be a heavy drain) but I think they tend to add up with all the other services running.
As for 'Aggressive' depends on the app killer but my understanding (with the one I use), is that there is a memory limit before the app is killed. Once the limit is reached on aggressive, it doesn't take much before memory is cleared.
One thing to install is SeePU as this gives an indication of CPU, memory and network on the top menu bar. This also helps when the system lags (usually CPU is high and memory is low) and helps to know when to clean (or what threshold to set).
Hope this helps.
Hi all,
I've had this phone for a few days now and love it. However I find I have very little RAM available.
I have on average around 30-40mb of ram available and the phone sometimes slows down quite a bit. I've ad a look at the running apps and the main culprit was SPB Shell launcher which was using around 50mb. I have since stopped using this but I am still only getting around 40-50mb remaining (with timescape disabled) and again a sluggish phone at times.
How is everyone else's?
I am thinking of doing a factory reset and start afresh to see what app may be causing the problem.
Any other suggestions or is this normal with this phone?
Thanks for your replies.
I have the same. I thought it was down to having over a thousand contacts all duplicated in exchange and google.
I have 130m of internal space available. Is there any way of re assigning it as you can in windows mobile?

My Average Free ram @150 MB
135 - 140ΜΒ here.
Have been checking with Advanced Task Killer (ofcourse NOT automatically set to kill everything, but fully manually every now and then), and noticed that there were times when the phone just left plenty of unnecessary apps wondering around in the background. Apps that are not the "always-on" by android system. So I kill EVERYTHING else except from:
1) Clock
2) TrackID
3) LiveWare
4) Media Sharing
5) Maps
6) Hanashi (WTF is that?!? it ALWAYS comes back by system.)
7) Setup wizard
(What remains always active by system also depends on the widgets you have, e.g. I have TrackID widget, you might not have it, so you wont need it.)
and have even noticed better battery performance...
EG, during nightime, I left the phone untouched (not used ATK), and when I woke up, I had a 12-13% battery drop, while the other day, after a fresh cleaning before sleeping, got around 4-5% drop. Both times with same conditions...
I have about 140 free and nerver under 100

Try Advanced Task Killer
Yeah I have about 150mb free.
And can I say coming from the x10, this phone is rediculously smooth. I love it!
Can we expect more free RAM once it's rooted/a custom fw is available?
This obsession about RAM needs to stop!!!!! 2.3 manages memory very well and you shouldn't be having any issues with the phone, unless you start messing with it (task killing the wrong things for example).. My phone is running really smoothly.

The reason I asked is that my phone does not run smoothly at times but very laggy and some items (contacts, emails etc) can take an age to load (well not an age but seconds but it feels like an age )
I was just wondering if this was the norm or not.

Yeap, 2.3 handles RAM almos perfectly. EG, if you open as many apps as you want and just leave them in the background, when you try to launch a HUGE game (eg Asphalt 6), the system will free as much RAM as required for the game to run smoothly.
BUT, I have noticed that some apps are left idle without me usng them (and without being system triggered apps, which when closed, are not resprang), and are not automatically closed by system. I tested leaving overnight the phone without killing anything after a days usage (with more than 15 apps in the background), and while being at 15% when left at night (around 01:00 am), it was off in the morning (7:30 am).
Then I did a fresh reset to the device, noticed what apps are automatically opened by system, and protected them (unchecked them) from Advanced Task Killer (which was set to manual), so that it will not shut them down when I click the "kill all" button. Next night, I killed all non-system apps (that do not restart if you do no action), and left the phone overnight again to see if there is any difference. Battery dropped around 5%.
I did this twice under same conditions (same time gap, BT open etc.), and results were almost the same +/- 2%.
So IMHO, if you use a task killer app wisely, you could manage to get better battery performance when the phone is idle, but you will NOT get better performance (smoother UI etc.)
Again, all these IMHO.
@dragunov - completely agree with everything you're saying.. it's the difference between knowing what you're doing and blindly killing tasks because someone said it helps!!!
for the OP - would suggest figuring out what it is you've got running that's causing the lag cos it's not the phone hardware/ OS that's at fault - This is the only drawback of Android vs iPhone -the QA of the apps on the market doesn't pick up this sort of problem.

Thanks, thats what I intend to do. A factory reset and the re-install gradually my apps to see which ones are the problems.
When I first got the phone I loaded it up with apps so it will now be difficult to retrace so a fresh start is what I will do.
A quick update. I have done a factory reset and although the phone is smoother I still only have 40-50mb free (only app I installed was swype).
Can I just ask what free ram other users have?
Thanks
Right now.. 60Mb.
I had about 150 out of the box while taskkiller always said about 5 apps running background (not installed by me).
Now yesterday my arc froze while browsing the web and rebootet itself (screen was scary, single pixles loosing light while some were still on till everything was off).
Now that was the only time the arc did that and afterwards task killer now (after killing apps) only shows 2 or 3 apps running background and up to 195MB free RAM which is cool but scary at the same time ...
Still can recieve phone calls though and everything works ... well Im happy for more RAM
Oh yeah, got swype on my whitelist.
Honestly I don't understand the need for more ram?
having 60mb is similar to having 200mb, it's all about applications reserving their spots, once they needed they'll kick in, otherwise they stay idle ( talking about system apps and well developed applications )
even if you have 60mb you still can run games that require 100mb... smoothly
the lag some face is due to background application using the processor
I usese autokiller memory optimizer. See unlike the other appear that kill everything, autokiller mo just optimizes the Android system so you wont have to go hunting for those apps.

Generally speaking, yes, this is normal.
Those apps are put into standby and some apps run automatically like Systemupdater, Acer Sync etc... Other apps, like Photo Browser 3D, nemoPlayer, even Maps etc - will start but not in the sense of 'start' like we would think. They are ready states (as I understand them) and in some cases will stay ready or swap out when resources are getting light and the OS needs more headroom.
"By default, every application runs in its own Linux process. Android starts the process when any of the application's components need to be executed, then shuts down the process when it's no longer needed or when the system must recover memory for other applications."
So even if you don't launch and application manually, it could easy start up on it own if a component of it was executed (on some level).
It is not recommended to force-close applications unless the application is causing problems - in which case, uninstalling it is the better option.

I (though others would say the opposite) do not recommend uninstalling anything that came preloaded with the tablet. Both for stability reasons and future updates - if however you're really REALLY obsessing over getting back a dozen megabytes of allocated memory from those minor apps then you're going to have to go the whole long road down root avenue and backing up those applications etc ad nauseam. You can get all the info you need throughout the forum.
My advice is, don't worry about those native apps running in the background - if the OS needs more resources it will manage them on it's own. It's not like Windows where you can kill running programs or processes willy-nilly from the task manager when you want to free up memory - in Android, the OS does this as it sees fit, on its own. If it wants more juice, it will make more juice available to itself.
I had the same issues.. a quick fix i ran was to root my tablet and install "bloat freezer" from the market.
it simply stops the processes from running, so your not un-installing them just stopping them from running, Im now seeing my free ram running at appx 65% free at any time which is much better than before.
If i do want to use skype or whatever i simply unfreeze them and freeze them again when finished..
hope this helps..
<edit>
just to let you know i have frozen all of the acer bundled apps
Freezing apps is an option. I don't do that so I have no experienced opinion as far as that goes.
i agree with gamma
These apps are not really running. They are connected to context menues.like when younare in camera app and you click the share image menus.you will see the apps that can share the image such at Facebook Picasso dropbox and so on.these are the apps setting in static mode.I know in nor totally correct but its the closes I can do to describe.if your statement needs the memory or CPU cycles these apps might be using it will shut them down..I have tested this theory by launching many apps and logging processes.
task killers running in the background work against the built in memory and resources management's.
Good luck.if im wrong anyone please correct the post.just do so nicely

That does freeze those apps.but if the system needed that ram it would do the same.it gives foreground ape priority.if that or those apps need the resources.the system will kill the lowest priority apps.
Of course thee are some rogue apps that do not play fair.if you find them then uninstall.I use advanced task killer.but never let it run in background.just can launch it lookat what's running. Then close it it will not restart itself
I understand the memory management. But i would rather applications especially skype to run when i want and not as the system see's fit. Social jogger was another culprit they were my biggest bug bears..

Those apps are not running. The may be started at boot but only partially, then they are "paused" and cached for quicker loading if needed.
Android does an awesome job at memory management and will kill apps when it needs more ram.
I dont like it either since i dont use social jogger, nemo player, acer sync and many more so you have two options
If you are rooted flash a rom without all that crap in it.
Or
Use a file manager with root access and file manipulation like 'rootexplorer' and rename those files so they wont run.
I rename them to socialjogger.apk.bak
Just adding the .bak to the filename is enough.
But dont piss around you can smoke the tablet and have to do a factory reset via recovery if you mess with the wrong file.
Just post a list of thing you wish to remove and we will be happy to let you know whats ok or not.
Oh and btw... the ipad runs a crap ton of stuff in the bckground too, apple jst desnt show you like android does.

I looked at my free RAM and out of 1 GB I only have around 350 mb free!
That and I disabled ALL widgets!
I looked at running apps with advanced task manager and there is all of this crapware like Pulse etc running. I cleared memory and got some back but not much. As soon as I turn the tab back on all of the junk comes back and drains my battery 10% overnight with wifi OFF on a wifi only tab.
It is ridiculous to only have less than half of my RAM available. On my phone I lost half of that to bloat too. I bet if this tab had 2GB of RAM they would fill 1.75 GB with crap.
What gives? Why do they insist on doing this and not letting ME choose what I want running on MY tablet? Can I get rid of or freeze all of this junk?
They are just cached and automatically freed up when an application needs more RAM. But I do agree that Andriod does a very aggressive caching even on apps never used. Why not remove it with TB?
Free ram has no purpose. It will take and free RAM as it sees fit. If you force it to use less ran, it will run slower. Let it manage the ram itself, this is how Unix has worked since the start and it's working perfectly fine.

+ 1 on this. It's seriously easy to get a bit neurotic about system resources. If your tab is running fine just enjoy it and don't sweat the numbers.

Yeah but I don't need Pulse, buddies now, family locator, Samsung game hub blah blah running and eating up CPU and battery either (as well as internal flash memory). I will never use that crap so I might as well get it gone. I am not sure why it opens stuff up that I never use or never have.
Is there a list somewhere on what can be nixed and what can't?
I would like to bring this thread up again.
I do have the same problem as DaveC1964.
All I want is a "clean looking" tablet without Google+, Pulse, SocialHub,GameHub etc.
I also hate that those apps connect to the web. I know you can disable that, but I want them gone.
I only use the internet browser, youtube and pdf app.
How do I uninstall those preinstalled annoyences?
Is there a way to do this without a custom ROM?
Thank you
you'll need to root your tab and use titanium back to remove the bloatware. be careful with what you remove though as it may affect other apps. always make a backup.

Best you initially just freeze the offending apps with Titanium Backup instead of uninstalling/deleting them right away - that way you can always re-enable them if your system should become unstable or start acting up.

I'm finding the RAM management on the S8+ and probably therefore the S8 to be heavily throttled.
My device memory is split as:
4GB total:
System and apps: 2.8GB
Available: 600MB
Reserved: 639MB
The problem I am seeing is that I am never seeing memory consumption above 2.8GB so that the last 600MB is never touched whatever I open. This aggressive throttling is evident If switch between a mere 5 or 6 open apps, the first ones opened have been closed and have to completely re-open and re-load even though there is a is about a 600MB chunk of memory sitting around so this last 600MB is being totally wasted. This is validated when I go to the built in memory manager within Device maintenance and it only shows the last 3-4 apps opened as being active. Believe Samsung needs to adapt the memory management to be less aggressive here as it is impacting on multitasking quite severely.
Right now I have system and apps using 2.4gb., Available space 1gb, reserved 639mb.
I find that if you back out of an app by pressing back, it closes and you have to reload, such as facebook, messages, phone, gmail etc.
I find that if I use the home button to back out of apps they remain in memory. Apps like facebook have to resync when I go in but are still in memory.
What apps are you using to have them close on you?
Exynos or Snapdragon? Mine is UK Exynos maybe there is a difference.
I'm multitasking, so using the app switch button. I'm not backing out which closes apps. Processor is nothing to do with apps closing and I have Exynos. In my experiments I'm using the web browser, whatsapp, email, music player, maps and samsung health.
Hasn't it been like that for ages, Jonathan-H?
i can understand the op's point, especially if multitasking is needed, but the behavior described is actually a good thing for a phone. otherwise you can have too many apps eating up memory that you don't want. the phone doesn't know the user intends on multitasking back and forth. there was a time when there were pages of complaints about apps staying on after user moved on from it, so this is specifically something they would have designed for. there's no right answer here short of a full adaptable ai of some kind.
Unfortunately even Pixel is bad with RAM Management. Till now only Oneplus 3 and Xiaomi Mi5s Plus with 6 GB of RAM keep many apps in memory. I had an iPhone 7 Plus before S8 Plus and all the apps were in the same state like when I left them even after one day. So till now iOS is the fastest OS for me because it keeps apps in memory. Even Youtube stayed in Memory and on S8 Plus it reloads after one hour. I guess it's about keeping battery under control on S8 Plus and this is the reason. On the other hand, the first time launch of apps is faster on S8 Plus compared to iPhone. If somehow Android can keep apps in memory and also control the battery consumption, it can be perfect.

If you never get to use the RAM you paid for then it is not a good thing. It's poor RAM management. We're not talking about it closing down apps once the RAM is even close to the limit, we're talking about it closing apps withing minutes and long before the last 20% of RAM is used up which is a sizeable chunk. And having RAM empty is old school thought which is now accepted to be bad practice and was just a benchmark used to see that your system was not being stressed. These days it's better to have as much in RAM as possible rather than waste it empty and have the system need to reload things.

For serious multitaskers like me, it leads to the opposite problem: apps keep getting reloaded from scratch and that ruins battery life even more.
I'd like to add my voice into this. I am also a heavy multitasker. I have a set of standard 6-8 apps that constantly keep getting kicked out of memory and closed out of the carousel. It is not a RAM limitation issue as I am, like the OP, always below the limit. It just seems that Samsung made the memory management much too aggressive. I already set all possible options in the OS to control what is monitored and suspended and such, but this made no difference.
Same for me. At first reading this I though I posted this because of the exact numbers.

. Apps like facebook have to resync when I go in but are still in memory.
What apps are you using to have them close on you?
Exynos or Snapdragon? Mine is UK Exynos maybe there is a difference.

If it is 'forced' to refresh the displayed content it is not keeping it in memory.
You need to use a device where the issue is not exhibited to see how memory management should work.
Sadly my S8 Exynos can not keep more than half a dozen apps fully in the background without then forcing the content to reload/refresh when going back into those apps, from Facebook, YouTube, Photos, Gallery, newsstand, Play Music.

Exactly my issue and I have done likewise to no avail unfortunately.

The last update of the Gallery from Play Store made it start almost instantly. Maybe they need to put all the stock apps in Play Store so they start fast. About the difference between App refresh and App reload, it's totally different thing. We all agree with refresh and we don't like reload.
Android Doze
The problem is Android Doze, which freezes every app once it's in the background. Solution is simple: Settings -> Device Maintenance-> Battery -> Battery usage -> Optimize menu -> All apps. Untick the ones you need and, probably, they will remain in memory for while. So far, working for me.
so no solution to this thus far?? any root tweaks or build prop tweaks useful to solve this??? or we still have a dump phone
