I am getting one of those dual port USB flash drive with both type-C port and type-A port, and planning on encrypting the drive to carry some fairly sensitive materials between my Mac and the 6P. I know I should have gotten one of those usb sticks with encryption baked on to the drives themselves, but then I would be sacrificing the convenience of a native USB-C port and have to use an adaptor. Is there any software-based solutions that work on both Mac OS X and Android?

I would like to play around with the USB host capabilities of the 7.7, but I currently don't own the adapter. I have got 2 USB female to female adapters, have you got any idea how to kick the tab into host mode without the official adapter?
hots cable
have a look at motorola xoom user forum, there are plenty of references to making your on host usb cable
All newbie hackers out there,
With working TWRP upon us, plan for the future and go grab an OTG cable for yourself. It just so much easier to dump the files from Fire to USB drives which you'll attach via the cable. Get 5 OTG cables for $4 on ebay, search for "(5-pack) Micro-USB Male to USB 2.0 Female Host OTG Adapter Cable". Give away the spares to your friends for karma points!
The other item recommended is "All In One Multi-card Reader w/ 3 Ports USB 2.0 Hub Combo for SD/MMC/M2/MS MP YP" (less than $1), this way you can stick the reader into Fire via the OTG cable, and be able to access micro-SD cards.
Life is just so much easier with the right tools !!!
I'm partially building off this existing thread, however I'm sure that what I'm doing is a bit more specific:

I'm planning an Android tablet in-dash car install, and wondering which one to use. Specifically, an ASUS Nexus 7 a Samsung Tab S 8.0/8.4 or a Samsung Tab A 7.0/10.0; the problem being whether the tablet can charge whilst being semi-permanently connected to a variety of USB devices as an OTG host.
The type of install is pretty common, and a few people have done this. I'm really not sure if they've surmounting the USB-OTG charging issue however. Anyway. The proposed setup is this:
3A 5V regulator for car ign. supply > USB OTG Y-cable
USB hub < USB OTG Y-cable > Tablet
USB hub > (USB DAC, SD card reader, Flash drive)
I'm aware of the issues with the Nexus 7's OTG charging problems which required the use of a specifically-written kernel, now somewhat old and obsolete. Has simultaneous OTG and charging become a common OS/hardware feature, or was it perhaps just an issue with the Nexus 7....? Am I missing a greater problem here? I'm cross-posting this with the forums related to the other tablets, so I'll try and keep up with feeding responses from both into the others so we're all on the same page.
Cheers!
I'm using a Nexus 7 in my car (best decision I've ever made :laugh and wanted to use a T585N (A6 10.1") in my second car. So I tried OTG and charging at the same time: It does NOT work .
I hope I find a solution for it.
I'm pretty certain that unless a kernel similar to Timur's on the N7-2013 is compiled that allows OTG and fast charging, we're stuck with what Samsung gifts us with. I'm genuinely unsure whether this is modifiable within the kernel for devices beyond the N7, or whether any developers even have an interest in integrating it.
You're probably right. We're stuck with it unless we can wirelessly charge and sidestep the USB port altogether....
Hi,
So I'm developing an app to communicate over serial with a HID and testing on the g6 is proving troublesome.
The scene:
-Hid/USB Permissions granted
-Device filter correct and working as intended
-Goal is to send a string over serial.
Allthough I'm 100% sure my test code is correct, the app cannot open a serial port.
Is it normal behaviour in recent versions of android for the device to recognise an otg cable as a power source? Even with no other device connected? Are there any known issues opening serial ports on the g6? (7.0)
The cable works as intended when I plug a mouse or keyboard in but refuses to open a serial connection when my takget device is plugged in. It recognises it as a HID an can pull the serial number etc.
The android serial library should not require root or any other hackery So I'm a bit confused. I've ordered a few other otg adapters just in case.
Anyone who knows what might be going on pleas pitch in.
I've had some issues getting a serial adaptor working as well. I'm on 870DS. Originally tried the wired version of this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...odemu-connect-android-to-30pin-t3234840/page1
Thank God the developer changed to Bluetooth. I tried about 6 different otg cables. Worked fine on other non usb-c phones.
I suspect it is the adapter too...sucks so bad. The annoying thing is that I was so confident in android serial that I wrote a lot of code before I bothered testing the concept lol.
Does your OTG work on memory sticks OK? I have a G6 h870ds. My OTG only works for me with USB3 OTG adapters and USB3 memory sticks. I don't have a USB3 HID device to try. I now have a large collection of different OTG adapters and memory sticks. I opened up some of the adapters to buzz them through to make sure they were made correctly. They were! It took a while for the penny to drop why some things worked and some didn't!
I cant use USB2 OTG adapters or USB2 memory sticks, keyboards or cameras. Initial connection of the USB2 OTG adapter is recognized but no connected devices are detected. I used an app called USB Device Info that can give me details of detected devices and only USB3 devices are ever detected.
I have a USB2 memory stick with an LED on it. When it is first connected to the OTG cable it flashes in a way that leads me to think it is trying to reply to USB bus interrogation but something (probably software) fails. The phone connects to my USB2 PC port just fine so I don't think the hardware is at fault. I've reset the phone and upgraded to Oreo too but alas that didn't help.
A friend of mine has a G6 H870S and all my adapters and memory stick combinations work fine on his phone so I find myself wondering if I'm just unlucky or whether the dual sim version is subtly different in some way.
I fully admit I know nothing about the inner workings of USB but as far as I can determine USB3 uses all of the USB2 connections and the additional connections only available on a USB3 port so the hardware should be OK. I'm guessing most HID devices are USB2 but if its a USB3 could you possible have a related problem but in reverse?
Every time I plug in any USB OTG adapter I get that same pop up screen that defaults to select as "power supply" even with no device connected whatever I have previously chosen.
What works for me is to plug in the OTG adapter, and only then plug in the memory stick to it. Otherwise I get the "Power supply" thing too.

Leaving just the OTG adapter connected for a few seconds then attaching the usb device does not help. USB2 devices are never detected but all my various USB3 memory sticks work reliably when using a USB3 spec adapter. I've given up worrying about it now and accepted that there is just something a bit iffy about my G6.
I see the ethernet is actually a daughterboard, which is connected by a ribbon cable. Anyone think there is a chance this is just a USB-to-Ethernet hub? If it is, it would be an easy mod to swap over to a USB port, which would dramatically enhance the functionality of the non pro version. Why they didn't do this in the first place amazes me... it looks like a 10 pin ribbon cable though, so not sure if it's USB...

I'm interested in adding a USB port myself. But the mainboard has a Realtek chip (according to photos at fccid.io), which I assume is an ethernet chip. I have however seen people mention a soldered USB connector somewhere, but I haven't been able to find where.
Did you ever manage to find something out? I'd be happy even with SPI.
Can't you just use an OTG Y cable? Considering that is how the Firesticks handle USB via its micro port I don't see why Nvidia wouldn't have done that as well. Course I have the pro so I know nothing about the tube.
