Update to marshmallow failed - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm stock 5.1.1, unrooted but bootloader unlocked. Tried updating with ota but ran through the stock recovery Android booted and it said update failed. Do i have to relock the bootloader? Again, im NOT rooted.

Also, when I tried booting into recovery manually, after the bootloader unlocked warning screen came up, it went to what was supposed to be there stck recovery but instead was the dead (lying down) Android with this words "No Command" over him. That's all, no other anything. I Powered off and booted back into Android.

BTW, got the phone second hand....

Download 6.0 and flash in fastboot.

You can also use my thread, but remember, there provided files are for EU version of Moto X Style. If you are using another device, steps will remain the same, but you will need files for your device!

The dead Android is stock recovery. Hold the power button then tap the vol + button. That will take you into the recovery menu.
From LenoMoto:
Code:
With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on.
Press the Volume Down button to highlight "Recovery mode"
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode.
You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button.

[Q] bootloader issues

I am trying to get into the bootloader of my device by pushing up and power but it vibrates twice, nothing comes up and the orange led keeps blinking
I got into the stock recovery on accident, and it wiped my bootloader? I did the temp root and tried to push the engineering bootloader it still won't work.
edit: nevermind. LOL

To get to the bootloader, you hold Volume Down and Power. (The jury is still out on what Volume Up and Power does.)
The stock recovery first shows an image of a handset inside a triangle with an exclamation point, or something like that. Pressing Volume Up and Power then reveals the recovery menu. I assume you'll be replacing that with a custom recovery image soon.
If you did the command properly to flash the engineering bootloader, then your device should boot up and you'll see hboot 0.85.2007 on the second line of your bootloader. If your device doesn't boot, then I'm afraid you're screwed.

Try this, had the same problem yesterday:
If you get stuck in a bootloop rebooting the tablet after unlocking the bootloader...
Here's what you do..
1) During the bootloop.. hold the power button + volume up + volume down button simultaneously to get yourself back into fastboot mode as you were previously.
2) In fastboot mode.. use the volume keys to scroll to Recovery and the power button to select it.
3) In Recovery (Android robot on his back with a red triangle)... tap the volume up button and the power button simultaneously which will bring you into stock recovery. Again.. Don't hold the buttons, just tap them simultaneously. Also make sure you're holding the correct volume button. Up will be the volume key on the right.
4) Once you're in Recovery.. perform a factory reset/data wipe and then reboot your tablet... you should now be back to the Welcome Screen.
The guide is from "Cyber Warrior" over on AndroidCentral, google "[How-to] Unlock/Re-lock the Google Nexus 10 Bootloader (Mac/PC)" (can't post links yet), in the 2nd post

Exactly what I did to solve the bootloop after unlock. Worked with no problems after factory reset/data wipe. Just went back to the 4.2.1 I had on it.
With my Nexus 7, when unlocking the bootloader, it would automatically factory reset itself. The Nexus 10 doesn't appear to do this, but it does appear to be a required step regardless (I guess unlocking the bootloader does something that is only fixable with factory reset, for security reasons).
So as mentioned already, a factory reset should take care of things
thanks for the tip.i got something like that,i unlocked rooted the tablet and all was ok untill i went into system settings to update it via ota. after the ota had been downloaded succesfully it rebooted into recovery automatically but failed to update. then i couldnt get into the system any longer even after i flashed factory image using the toolkit in another thread.
i will try this when i get home, hope it can solve my problem too.
edit:done. thanks again for the tip

I'm new to nexus family too and had a lot of problems with it. (Never have problems but this recovery cost me a lot of time).
The solution is:
When you are EXACTLY at the red exclamation mark screen.
1) Press and hold POWER
2) Press volume UP.
That should show the options in less than 2 seconds.

I am experiencing the same "no command" issue, already tried the volume up + power and nothing happens, if I flash CWM touch 6.0.3.1 everything works but I can't go back to stock recovery no matter what, any advise?
Already flashed stock recovery using Wugfresh's Nexus Root toolkit but the "no command" problem persists.
Thank you.

it's power then volume up. you're doing it the wrong way. you need to press power first and while pressing on that you press volume up

Yeap, same thing, I press and hold the power and then I press the volume up, nothing happens. I even formatted the phone completely using the 4.2.2 image from google, nothing, the no command error keeps coming up, the only way to have a recovery is flashing CWM touch.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM ----------
I've got my N4 maybe a month ago, I installed the 4.2.2 OTA as soon as I got it, the I proceeded to unlock it and root it, one day someone recommended to clear the cache of the phone using the stock recovery (which I thought I had / to fix another problem that I was having) I went to fastboot and tried to access recovery, BOOM, just an android laying down with a red exclamation mark, no "no command" error at all. I downloaded CWM touch and flashed it using Nexus Root Toolkit, that worked fine, but I didn't want a custom recovery and also I needed to fix a 3G latency problem that I was having, after some reading I saw that someone recommended a full flash using the stock google image.
A couple of days I proceeded to flash the factory image, I installed it, after that I did a factory reset from android itself. After doing all that I wanted to clear the cache with the stock recovery just in case, BOOM, an an android laying down with a red exclamation mark and this time with a "no command" error. Tried the trick of holding the power and pressing the volume up, NOTHING HAPPENS!
Right now I am using CWM Touch.
Any suggestion?
Thank you.
No real solution??? Sad...

Nothing, this answer is unhelpful
I have this issue as well. I tried to "unroot" my N4 (and Im a noob at this), and I think I did something wrong because when I access recovery mode from the bootloader I see the "dead android" but no matter what I do I dont see the control/menu. I tried:
- holding all buttons at the same time
- holding the power button and the down button (in sequence)
- holding the power button and the up button (in sequence)
So now I can not boot my Nexus, I can not wipe my Nexus and I can not access it from the PC. I was running 4.3 and I used the "How to Unroot Nexus 4 to Stock 4.2 Jelly Bean on Windows!" youtube guide ( I am not allowed to post links) to unroot my device (nexus 4), where I fail at 8:45, I simply dont see that menu popping up. Instead, my Nexus shuts down or reboots.
Please help
Is there no fix for this?
I decided to go back to stock to get 4.3. I flashed 4.2.2 using the Nexus toolkit and then got 4.3 via an OTA after this I rooted my phone. As the OTA worked I would imagine that the stock recovery was working. When I tried to install the latest OTA I got the no command issue. I can flash cwm recovery no problem. But when I try to flash stock recovery either via a toolkit or via fastboot command it does not work - no command. And holding in power and then volume up doe nothing. Any advice? I suppoe I cando a full wipe flash the stock 4.3 image and see if this helps. Has anyone had any success fixing this problem?
I have the same issue.
Even when trying to get to stock recovery through Nexus Root Toolkit gets me a NO COMMAND screen.
It seems like the recovery is not there.
Still looking for an answer - any help?

When you get the no command prompt do the following.
Press and hold the power button followed by pressing and holding the volume up button. Release only the volume up button after 2 seconds and you will be in recovery.

Seems that you have the stock recovery installed (that Android laying on its back with a red triangle is the stock recovery).
If I'm not missunderstanding your issue, it shouldn't really be an issue but it's just like how it should be.

"No Command" issue solved for Zuum 9330
I want to thank every one of you guys. I had same issue with my phablet. By reading your comments I got ideas to try some key combinations, and factory reset my phone. Here is what I did:
1) Power down the phone
2) Press and hold "volume up", then Press and hold "power" button until Android logo with the message "no command" shows up
3) Press and hold "volume down", then Press "back" button then release "back" button and the menu will show up. Then release "volume down".
4) use "volume up" or "volume down" to navigate menu
5) to execute selection, use "home" button
I hope it helps someone.
If so, please tell me.
Total first timer, flash to stock as had messed up sd card partition trying to flash custom ROM, really worried when couldn't access recovery after stock flash. Thank you thank you thank you, this totally worked!!!
thank you a lot. saved my phone. i thought i will through away the nexus 4 but the combination of no command power button and volume up did well
Hope this helps, you press and release volume up! worked perfectly
Performing a factory reset may take some time, so make sure that you plug your device into a power source before you start. If your phone becomes unresponsive at any point during these steps, you can restart it by holding down the Power button for several seconds.
If your phone is on, turn it off.
Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery".
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command".
While holding down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button once.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Power button to select it.
Press the Volume Down button seven times to highlight "Yes - erase all user data" and press the Power button to select it.
After the reset is complete, press the Power button to select the option to reboot your device.
When you've finished, follow these steps to restore your data.

[Info] Guide to entering safe mode, bootloader, stock recovery

Yes, I know, everyone knows how to enter safe mode, bootloader, and recovery.
I found there are some inconsistencies to entering and using recovery depending on your which software you are running. In addition there are multiple ways of entering stock recovery.
Also I always see people asking this question because somehow the keypress order is not intuitive.
Entering Safe Mode
Tablet booted and running Android
Press/Hold Power button until power menu shows up
Tap/Hold Power off option
Choose OK to reboot in safe mode
Tablet powered down
Press/Hold Power button until Google screen shows up, RELEASE Power button
Press/Hold VolDn until Android has booted up
If successful, you will see Safe mode overlayed on bottom left of screen.
Entering Bootloader (ie fastboot mode)
Tablet booted and running Android
From adb
adb reboot bootloader
can also choose recovery from menu after bootloader comes up
From app
Use Quick Boot from Google Play
Tablet powered down
Power+VolDn while booting to enter bootloader
Release buttons after you see bootloader screen
Entering Stock Recovery
Tablet booted and running Android
From adb
adb reboot recovery
From app
Use Quick Boot from Google Play
Tablet powered down
Power+VolUp while booting to enter recovery
You can release buttons after you see Google on screen
When Stock Recovery starts you will see the Android fallen down screen
To bring up the Recovery menu
Power+VolUp to show recovery menu
Must be this sequence Press/Hold Power, THEN Press/Release VolUp, release Power
Within menu
VolUp to move up
VolDn to move down
Power to select
In addition, I found an inconsistency with JSS15J stock recovery that wasn't in the JWR66N recovery
While at the Android fallen down screen if you mistakenly press
VolUp
instead of
Power+VolUp
you will still get the Recovery menu.
However, VolUp will no longer function. It will instead become a toggle for switching between the Recovery menu and the Android fallen down screen
Android fallen down screen
VolUp to toggle recovery menu
Within menu
VolUp does not work since it toggles recovery menu
VolDn to move down
Power to select

I don't remember if there are two images one with and one without the triangle. I think I've only seen the image with the red exclamation point.
I've never seen anything to indicate the red exclamation mark is something you need to pay attention to.
Now if you apply an update and there is an error, then that is something I would pay attention to.

It doesn't load the stuff you added.
It is similar to safe mode on a PC, used to diagnose whether the issue is in the stock ROM or is in something you introduced by installing some app.

Bootloader
If none of that works, try the command with a dash "adb reboot-bootloader" Depends on your device sometimes, sometimes unplugging your device right after you enter this command will keep it from getting stuck at the boot logo screen. If that doesn't work, hold the power button to power device down and then boot it into recovery instead using the button combo. Then you can wipe cache & start all over again.
I'm not even able to get into Recovery. I can get to the bootloader, then I select "Recovery mode" and it shows the Google logo, but it never goes into recovery. I have let it sit at the Google logo for a couple of hours, and end up just holding down the power button to shut it down.
I have tried Skipsofts toolkit, as well as Wug's, to try to unlock the bootloader. This ends up with the device hanging at the "Unlock bootloader" screen after selecting "Yes". Again, I have left it in this state for well over an hour with no change.
Here's some info on my 2013 Nexus 7:
KitKat 4.4.4
Never rooted
Never unlocked bootloader
HW version rev-e
Bootloader version FLO-04.02
I suspect my Nexus knew I was supposed to go on travel next week and is faking sick.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi guys i have a google nexus 5 and it is locked state. It is getting booted again and again but it jiust reaches google logo and again restarts. Safe boot is also enabled so i cant enter in recovery mode also. Please help me ASAP.

Can't boot to bootloader

I recently got the update for 4.4 notification, clicked it but then the installation froze on a picture of android with an exclamation in his belly.
After that I could no longer boot to bootloader or recovery.
I tried fastboot but I cant not install the drivers as I cant boot to bootloader.
So I tried NRT and managed to get my recovery back (TWRP), but still no bootloader.
I have the option to return to stock on NRT but I am afraid it will fail and brick my N7.
I have SuperSU, flashify and TWRP apps running now with TWRP recovery also bootable.
How can I get my bootloader back?

Hi, Siddy1200...
If you had no bootloader... nothing would work... at all.
The bootloader underpins everything you do with your Nexus 7. Nothing happens without one... in which case , you'd be effectively HARDBRICKED.
The fact that stuff is working indicates that your bootloader is fine.
To access the bootloader manually... shut down the Nexus 7 completely.
Press and hold the VOL DOWN button...
Whilst holding, press the POWER ON button, for around 5-10 seconds...
You should now boot into the bootloader.
This key press sequence should also work if you CAN'T shut down the Nexus 7 normally... for example, if you're bootlooping. I've had a few scary moments myself in the past, and the VOL DOWN+hold, POWER ON sequence has always thrown me back into the bootloader...

Thanks for the reply Greg.
I can't boot to boot loader, that means when I power on with vol- pressed, then select boot loader and press power , it doesn't work. The screen flashes for a second and it is back to the previous screen to where I can choose restart, recovery, boot loader, etc.
This also happened with recovery but I fixed it, now I'm trying to fix the bootloader

Apologies, Siddy1200... but I'm a little confused... based upon my reading of your post... I think you're already in the bootloader!!.
"...it is back to the previous screen to where I can choose restart, recovery, boot loader,etc..."
The bootloader features a green android, lying on its back, with it's belly open - some really tiny text at the lower left hand side of the screen giving details about the current bootloader version and it's lock state. At the upper right hand side of the screen, adjacent to the power button, are selectable options via the POWER BUTTON, which can be cycled through with the VOL BUTTONS... and these options are START, RESTART BOOTLOADER, RECOVERY MODE, POWER OFF... and then START again.
Somewhat similar to your above quoted description.
Selecting RESTART BOOTLOADER will just bring you back to where you already are... ie., the BOOTLOADER.
Also, if you can't access the bootloader, how are you managing to boot into TWRP?... as this is normally done via the bootloader... ie, by selecting the RECOVERY MODE option.

Ged.

I will return to stock with NRT and try the 4.4 update now.
