Hello ppl.
I have my Moto X Force since january, most of the time happy with it.
Since I started using my devide I had one SIM card and one 64GB Samsung EVO SD Card attached to it, everything working as it should. Or at least appeared to.
With 64GB of internal memory, I never really needed the SD Card but well, it was mounted and formatted by the device.
On a given day, for no reason I can explain, the device started showing the SD as corrupt, with the message that it needed to be formatted. But when I tried to format it through the phone, no deal, another error.
I removed the SD Card, and waited to come back home because I was on a vacation trip. Well, back at home I tried at least 4 different SD Cards, 2 of them new ones - Sandisk and Samsung - and other SD Cards I use on other devices, like cameras, video apparel and even the SD on my Z3 Compact. No deal, the phone can't read any of the SDs and asks to format. But if you try to format through the device, error.
I'm writing this here to register the problem and share the experience, since I couldn't find another thread with the same problem and maybe to find a solution with no need to deal with Motorola representatives.
connect the sd to the computer
probably will show error
reformat it and insert back to mxf
happened to my with 128gb pny
inserted 64gb sandisk and all well
reformatted and its usable again but i wont insert it as i
have no confidence in it
btw if you're on 6.0 +
did u choose to format as memry or stand alone sdcard ?

Thanks for your help.
That unfortunately doesn't work. I tried several different SD Cards, formatting through the computer too.
And tried both options on my Droid Turbo.
The only thing i haven't tried yet is to completely wipe the device...

No, I'm sorry but I can't help you.
I'm giving up this device. Since I had no problems at all with S6, Note 5 and Z3c and had very similar problems with Moto Maxx and Moto X Force, I'm selling this device after the warranty check and will skip Motorola for a time.
Motorola devices are amazing on theory right now, good battery life, good camera, a lot of features, but in real life use they end being a pain.
I paid extra due to the screen, that I see like an insurance, but it doesn't worth it.

Im sorry to hear of your experience. I really like this phone and ive had a moto x before the old version and like all the features active display and best of all shatterproof. I am going to try a few different sd cards wen i get a chance hopefully one will work but evn iff it doesnt i think i will be ok with 32gb storage. I am not sure i have any warranty entitlement because i bought from ebay although it came fuly sealed i dont think motorola will accept warranty iff bought from ebay.

They will have to accept it, seeing as it can not have been manufactured more than 1 year ago, it is definitely within the warranty period.
I will try to see if they do but I have a feeling they will ask for the original owner to make the request for repair that is iff in deed some thing is defective and it's not just a software problem.
I have a similar problem. My SD card worked perfectly in the phone for a few months. Now the phone will read the card for a couple of minutes after a reboot, but then it mysteriously loses the connection to the card. Have tried the card in other phones and there is nothing wrong with it. Why is the X Force able to read the card, then not?

Ok... I'm not so sure If i was supposed to make a new thread or reply to an old one... but If you replaced your MicroSD card, then what kind did you replace the 16gb card with? I put in an older 8GB C4 card and my phone is not working as well as before. It is not responding during sync and it opens applications a bit slower. Every time, after about 5 minutes into the sync operation, it stops responding and I have to reconnect it to my computer, and I fear that it is overcharging the battery.
So just curious, what brand, model (if you have it), size, and class, are you using currently?
SD Cards
Hi Kuree,
The first time I replaced my SD i used a Lexar 16GB Micro SDHC (it has a 4 in a cirlce on it as well). This one worked perfectly, syncing and there were no slow downs what so ever.
The card i have in my surround now is Also a 16GB MicroSDHC (with a 2 circled on it) this card also works perfectly. i'm not sure on the brand name as this one doesn't say it but I'm pretty sure it was a Lexar Mobile version.
I've only used 16GB cards so i can't exactly tell you if the 8GB card is the root of your issues.
Hopefully this helps you out!
If you have any more questions let me know and I'll see if i can answer them.
Take care,

problems....
I guys, sorry to resurrect an old thread. I'm having issues with upgrading to 32g... after hard resetting the phone and setting up time, the phone just gets stucked in "installing apps". It just seats there.
Any suggestions or things I should try??...
Any help will be highly appreciated...

Hi,
Is "ADATA" micro SDHC 4
They told me (were I bought this) that this card should work.
Now I can't even read or format the SD card....
Thanks!!

I didn't even know the surround had a memory card slot, where is it?
Any chance to revive the "adata" card?. I would really hate to trash 26 bucks...
To LKMR, search youtube, there is a nice tutorial on how to expand the memory of the phone.

In this video how to disassemble, locate, and swap out the microSD card in an HTC Surround Windows Phone 7 on AT&T. Please note that undertaking this project will most certainly void your handset's warranty.

I used a Sandisk Class 4 32GB. No problems at all... WELL worth the price and effort. They are also VERY cheap if you keep an eye on Deal a Day. I've bought 4 from there so far, the last was like $20.

A lot of Sandisk 32 and 64Gb cards have issues with both S3's and S4's.
Apparently those manufactured after 12/2012 no longer have this issue, but theres no way to tell their manufacture date.
Try and get it exchanged where you bought it.
I use and recommend Samsung cards, and have never had any problems with them.
Yes, they cost a little more, but the stuff I keep on them is irreplaceable, and I couldnt afford to lose 1 days work.
Also I recommend installing SD card monitor from Play.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdcardmonitor
It will tell you how many times your card has unmounted erroneously.
Cheers and dont forget to hit the thanks button

SD card unexpectedly removed... The heck does that mean? I didn't take it out nor jar or drop the phone. That just popped up and I didn't have access to the SD card until I rebooted. It's a 128gb samsung evo microsd that was formatted in the X. Anyone else have this issue?

No issue here. Could be a sim tray or contact issue. 64 gb card forget which brand. Sandisk pro I think.
I'm having the same issue. Love this phone! But this is getting a little irritating
I have not had this issue. Been using the phone for two weeks with a 64 GB Samsung Pro+ card in it since day one.
I just boxed my turd up and sent it to moto today. The bootloader was unlocked but flashed back to stock unrooted, hoping for the best. They gave me a code to get a new one made...it said it will be here Oct 1st.

Anytime I had this issue previously, it was 100% the card.
The card works fine in my Moto G and my wife's Moto X...

So, far I've only had it twice in the 3 weeks i had it
Like other folks stated, it has to do with the SD card. If you purchased a SD card from eBay or something generic, you are bound to have this issue. I think it has to do with the flimsiness of the plastic. Borrow a good brand card from someone and give it a try. Chances are issue will be resolved. I had the similar issue which was resolved by purchasing a genuine San Disk card.
It is not necessarily the card. I have a genuine 128GB Sandisk microSDXC (exFAT file system) that's very fast. After no problems for several days, the Pure gave me the message that the card had an incompatible file system and asked if I wanted to format it. I reset several times, got the same message twice, then after that the Pure didn't recognize that a card was even present. I pulled the card (and SIM!?) and reinserted it, and it works fine again. Only catch is that now all the files on the card have that day's date and the time I reinserted the card. Bizarre and very troubling. My plan is to format the card in the phone and reload it from the backup on my hard drive.
I had this problem for a while on my old Samsung GS3, and it turned out to be a firmware issue on the phone that Samsung never addressed. I hope that it's not the same case here.
same problem here. i use my old sd card for two or three weeks. this card works fine. its a 8gb sandisk micro sdhc. now i bought a new 64gb card (SanDisk MicroSDXC Action SC 64GB Extreme 90MBs SDSQXNE-064G-GN6AA; this one: http://amzn.com/B013CP5C02) and got this problem. yesterday the replacement card from amazon arrived but the problem persists.
This is my 3rd moto x (pure) edition, the first 2 I had no problems with using the same card, so I'm kind of assuming it's the tray on this particular phone, but I'm going to try and format the card and see what happens
I have seen this before on multiple "tray" devices... place a couple layers of scotch tape on the back of the card and reinsert it, adds just a bit of pressure to the connection... often enough since tolerences are pretty tight on these things.
I don't know if it's something I'm doing, but this has happened twice now (both with an S7 and now my new S7E).
I bought my S7 with a SanDisk Extreme 64GB Micro SD. After a few months, I kept finding that on taking a photo, it was diverting to internal storage over the SD card. Rebooting sorted it for a while, but it reached a point where it locked itself and could only be read, but not written to. I sent it back to Sandisk and they issued a replacement.
Since then I've now got an S7E (I was part of the N7 scandal). I'm using the replacement Sandisk card I received and today EXACTLY the same thing has happened. The card has become completely locked. I can see the data that was on it from the S7E before it locked up, but I can't write to it. In fact, I can't even format it. If I put it in my PC I can read everything on it but otherwise it's bu**ered.
Where am I going wrong with my S7's and SD cards. Any ideas?
Cheers.
I had the same thing happen. My Sandisk 128gb got corrupted, sent it back for replacement to Sandisk. Then the replacement got effed. Then I bought a Samsung Evo 128gb and it got locked somehow. There are files on it that I can see with a PC, but when in a phone shows as corrupted. Cannot format, cannot do anything with it. I got another 128gb Samsung from Amazon and so far is working. I am worried it will do it again.
Can i ask which version of s7/edge you guys have ? I got the exynos model (n7 scandal as well) I popped in a 128 gb evo card, I'm worried it might do that to me :/

Mine is also Exynos!
Well for me, it started when I had the AT&T 935A S7E with the SanDisk, but I now have the Exynos S7E and it is the one that the Samsung micro SD went bad on. So both models caused issues. I do flash custom roms and things and know the risks, but have never had this happen on any of my S2, S3, S4, S5, or S6 phones.
I got the same issue but I think its the card with the HC card I didnt have problems but with the XC card it got corrupted...
Try a different SDCard manufacturer to SanDisk?
Possible the replacement was from a faulty batch of cards the original was also from
Think I'm using Kingston
Did you read my post? It happened to me with a Samsung too.
Same issue here with Silicon power 64gb.
Might be the whole XC thing.... I have an old 32GB Samsung EVO knocking around. I'm gonna see if I can kill it haha! Otherwise I'm going to have to send the dead one back AGAIN.
I had te same issue on 3 SanDisk cards all SDXC, I concluded to stick with SDXC, got for the extreme versions.
I tried everything to recover or format.

Doesn't work. Already tried that.
There is a command you can use on dos that fixes read write or bad partition errors on sd cards . Check this link

Yes that's what's I've run already on my cards. I have tried everything I can find. I do work in the IT field though I'm not a programmer. The closest I've come to getting somewhere is using an application called testdisk. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk It will help you recover any files lost but that isn't my problem. The one thing I will say is I'm pretty sure all mine have been formatted as eXfat vs fat. I had one go bad when I was messing around with adoptable storage.

I also used to work in the IT field! I spent about 8 hours last time trying to repair the card the first time around - in the end I just sent it back to Sandisk. You need to request an RAM on their web site.
And yea, no CHKDSK /f, or DISKPART CLEAN will touch it. It's so odd how the phone can render a card useless - yet still be completely readable.
I have an sandisk extreme pro 64Gb sdxc since april. Only use it for photos and downloads, sometimes to listen to music. It still works flaweless *knocks on wood*
Have you guys formated the card in the phone? This cause some really bad performance for me, i formatted it with my pc and SDCardformatter and the performance is better now. But sadly not as good as out of the box. Maybe samsung screw something up while formatting with the phone?

When this happens, the card is locked. If I format the card in the phone it claims to have worked - yet nothing has actually been formatted. If I use SDCardformmatter (or Windows, or any of the 3rd party tools) they all fail. "This disk cannot be formatted"!
Yes I have put them in the phone, and my card says corrupted when in the phone, yet works fine (other than being write protected) in my PC. I did request an RMA on my first 128gb SanDisk, then it happened to the replacement, then it happened to the Samsung 128gb, and I am on my 4th 128GB which is a Samsung EVO Select. I thought it might have had something to do with not doing the full wipe of data in TWRP recovery before switching roms. It does say doing full wipe removes encryption as well as wiping data.
Hi
I just got my A2017G for a week now and yesterday, my 1 year 2 months old microSD just died in it. It is a SanDisk Ultra 128GB card that had been used in a Panasonic CM1 and an Asus ZE552KL before going into the A2017G. All my pictures taken yesterday cannot be view although they are on the card at their full size. The card can be read off the phones or on a computer but cannot be written to, so no reformat.
I had seen on the ZTE USA forums of microSD dying in this phone, but they mostly refer to Samsung cards. Anyone here has this experience before or is this just a case of bad luck? Also, I am still on the factory B11 firmware at the moment, planning to update to B08/9 this weekend, not sure if it is a factor.
I know the SanDisk has a 5 years warranty for the Ultra range, but since the card is now read only with everything on it intact, how do I destroy the data without destroying the card? Any suggestions? Don't think they will accept a physically destroyed card as a RMA.
I have about the same micro SD card (sandisk 128GB) that has gone through my Xperia SP for about two years, and now my Axon 7 for over a year now, and I've had no issues with it. It is still working perfectly fine. I have heard of someone who destroyed their card when formatting it as adoptable storage (although on a Moto G). If you did that, it might be the cause.

It might be bad luck but I'm not sure really. All cards go read-only after some time, but there seems to be a problem with the Axon 7 and SD cards for some reason. Once it goes read-only I think there is no way to destroy its data without actually physically breaking it; I had an 8gb SD where I kept my ROMs and zips and initially I didn't know this, and attempted to format it. I tried around 10 methods, with some shady kingston software, even with an Ubuntu live cd that i had lying around, and nothing
So I dunno...
If you're gonna save pictures and stuff I guess it'd be better for you to use an OTG and a pendrive
Yeah, it killed my Samsung 128GB card last week.
I will just put it down to bad luck for this time but think I will get a cheap PNY 64g to test for a while before buying another 128g one. I had just updated to B09 and does it support 128g+ cards?
Looking at the ZTE USA forums again today and it seems that there are both Samsung and SanDisk cards being killed in the Axon 7, so can't nail it down to a brand.
Mine was killed as well. It's a Samsung 64gb one. The 2nd one.
It killed my Samsung 64 GB one, and then it killed another replacement soon after.
This phone kill SD cards.
Does it do it on a specific firmware or all firmware? For reference, my SanDisk Ultra 128g card died on B11, now I am on B08 with a Samsung 16g as a temporary solution.
I don't believe it's a firmware issue, it might be outputting higher voltage or something like that. There's no way to find out why this happens really.
I think it's an encryption thing, because it wasn't doing it on custom roms. And it doesn't really break the card, it locks it out. But I just buy the same card, switch it in the car with the broken one. Go in and refund it. Kinda shady but it works.

That's breaking the card. When a block goes read-only it's because it's broken, since blocks only withstand a set amount of writes before that happens. Maybe a higher voltage does that, but I just don't know.
If it's true that stock is the problem, then maybe Android 8 will not have this issue, as it is not based in mifavor

Yeah it happened to me twice going back to stock from custom roms. And I say it's not really broken because I can still access all my files, but I can't add anything. I hope Oreo fixes that too.

i was just saying that it's normal for a broken SD card to display that behaviour. You lose the ability to write, but not necessarily to read.
I was just saying that in case you would still try to fix it. A backup and calling warranty (if possible) is the only way out

Yeah it's no use trying, I tried a lot of stuff, but I just went back to Walmart bought the same one, opened and switched it with the broken one. Went in and said it wasn't working, and got a refund.
I've been using my Patriot 200GB in the A7 for quite awhile, it's still kicking. Its been in 4 phones so far (lg v10, galaxy note 4, huawei honor 6x and now the A7. I don't use adoptable storage, and I take extra steps to ensure that encryption is disabled. But I'm using an AOSP ROM, not stock, so maybe that's why it works fine. I'm still waiting for a 500gb+ card, then I'll upgrade.
Mine died as well only after using it in my A7, luckily it was just a 32GB ADATA chip.

Yes, my card is still under the SanDisk 5 years warranty but I do not want them to see the shady stuff that I cannot delete when I send it back to them!
An update, just 1 month later, a PNY 64GB also went funny. Videos stored on the card either became unplayable or are corrupted when playing it. Still can be written to on a computer. I did not save pictures to the card now as I am very worried about losing my pictures, so the card was used in the phone as a read only card. Really disappointed as this phone is perfect in all other aspects.
Hi,
Mine killed SD card also. 16 gb. It was long time in HTC phone, than put to Axon 7
and used for a month and written only once a backup.
Now the card totally dead, no accessible from the Axon or external card reader also.
Is the problem systematically happen when the micro SD is in adoptable mode?
