Cannot rearrange homescreen apps on latest firmware - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I just purchased and set up my Shield TV yesterday and I have a strange issue. I don't seem to be able to re-arrange any apps on the home screen. In fact if I go to the homescreen icon in settings, there is no option to re-arrange at all!
I'm on Firmware 3.1 (24.5.78.96)
Is this an issue with the latest firmware? Or is there something I'm missing?
Cheers

Same here,
I'm having the same exact problem, any news are appreciated

This apparently is a beta for a gesture app. Here's a quote from the above page with only minor editing...
"SWAT can manage touches and/or gestures that you perform on the screen, independently from app that is running.
Application doesn't have any configuration, it installs and when you boot it starts autamatically and it can handle these gestures:
- 2 FINGERS: SWIPE DOWN TO HIDE/SHOW STATUSBAR
- 3 FINGERS: SWIPE DOWN TO SIMULATE HOME BUTTON
- 5 FINGERS: LONG PRESS TO BRING UP RECENT APP LIST (NOT THE STACK)
I can suggest you to try to hide statusbar (2 FINGERS SWIPE DOWN) before or when you are into the BROWSER or when you are playing some game, this prevent [to press] inadvertently soft buttons or notification area. You will always minimize application (3 FINGERS SWIPE DOWN) to return to the home, or you can jump to another application by bringing up recent app list (5 FINGERS LONGPRESS)."

I haven't tested it or anything. I'm running ICS and I guess it isn't supported for some reason... It looks neat enough Tho. I'm just lurking around looking for something safe to post about. This looks like it'll do.
Edit.:
Another quote.
At the moment it is a EARLY BETA, it is not dangerous, but with many bugs to fix and many improvements to do. ONLY FOR HC ROMs beacuse into the ICS ROMs there is a bug into SU binary. I am waiting for the patch...

Seems like the same as "Gesture control" app. With 1 different feature. Maybe you 2 should combine your resources.

Well, if it;s like the other app, make sure USB Debugging is turned on. And, the tab must be rooted. (check SU priviledges)

If I understand your needs, you are wanting to have a solution for returning to your home screen without the need of pushing the home button. Similar to the "accessibility" screen button on iPhone. There is nothing built into the current software for Note 3 (native, as you suggested) but there's no need to root and an app which will accomplish this function. Visit:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.matthewma.swipehomebuttonfree&hl=en
This I'm hoping will resolve things for you.
Hope this helps!

That, I'm unsure of. I've been playing with my settings today and trying to find custom ROMS and I too want to find a solution which will ease the wear & tear on my home button. Unfortunately, I do not think anything is available at this time. There's another app (Home Button Launcher) which I find a bit better and think I will use in the interim but it's a waiting game at this point:

Apex Launcher has the option to set any gesture to 'return to default screen'. Swipe-Down, for example.
I'm sure other launchers have a similar setting.
(Apex uses 69MB whereas Touchwiz uses 480MB... Just saying.)

think Nova Launcher has it too.. but was hoping to set a gesture to return to home screen from any app.
what you described seems like if you are on a second homescreen or something, doing the gesture will return you to the default screen
Swipepad has been my preferred navigation on all three of my Notes. I am also a huge fan of Apex launcher & only ever use those two in combination on note 3 for all my requirements.
One of those requirements is to never have to touch the home button.
My Swipepad has "Apex Launcher" as it's centre Pad so on any screen or app I can go straight to home screen one handed with one swipe.
Both these apps are free & are not memory hungry. Android is all about add on Apps & these two simple apps make the phone very one handed friendly.

* Obviously you can set one of the a swipe pads to "touch wiz home" if preferred by going through the "Activities" option when setting up that Pads action... If you've used swipepad I'm sure you knew that.

I don't have it enabled, let me check.
Yes, it would indeed seem so. Only works on another Homescreen.
What I've done instead is add a Home toggle to Sidebar Pro. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mohammad.adib.sidebar) It allows you to add a toggle or app to a swipeable sidebar. You just swipe from any side (you can set the size and position), and it pops up a sidebar over anything, even games. I've attached a screenshot.
It's not exactly the same as a gesture, but it's a good alternative.

hybrid properties do not get saved

When I try to change the hybrid properties they get reset every time and the values are not applied
What could possibly be the problem and how to change the properties
Also how to disable the home button unlock and widget paper complete disable?
These features were present in the cm10.2 and can't find them anywhere in this rom
Thank you

You've got a few questions needing answered here, if you could provide more information, you'll get more direct responses.
As far as hybrid settings go, which ones are you attempting to change? Also, make sure when you go to settings/developer options, root is set to "apps & adb."

[Q] No 3 dots menu any more?

When i bought the Nexus Player I had a 3 dots menu in apps.
Now I'm on android 5.1 and i did a factory reset (don't ask why. Just needed) and now I don't have 3 dots any more.
Any way to get them back? They are needed for some apps and can't be replaced by "tablet remote" for example.
same here...after updating to 5.1 the menu is gone! :*(
I might be wrong, but I think that LP 5.1 for "ATV" removed/broke the support for apps that... either don't follow Google's new Material Design guidelines or restricts apps that are coded to support the soft/hardware Menu button in Android devices. (The menu button and the the 3 dots on the GUI have equivalent functions in later versions of Android) Of course, it might also have to do with restrictions for apps that are not designed "specifically" for the Nexus Player ATV. I'm having this issue with Titanium Backup. I can't restore the apps I backed up using LP 5.0 because the Titanium interface is missing the main action buttons. The same version of Titanium works fine on my Nexus 7 running LP 5.1 for "Tablets".

exactly the same problem in my case. i cant restore my titanium backup and even to set up sixaxis app. Even tablet remote that has a menu button doesn't help... Maybe there is a way to get it back?? Or does vanillipop rom has it fix?
The inability to access the 3-dots menu is one of the most frustrating changes with Android 5.1 on the Nexus Player. Sometimes you can still access the menu if you try moving a mouse cursor over the area or by using Droidmote Client's hamburger menu button but that may not always work. As for customizing Sixaxis Controller, there is a solution. If you go in to the keyboard settings menu of the Nexus Player and choose "Sixaxis Controller" as the current keyboard, a "configure" option shows up underneath it which leads you in to the settings menu for Sixaxis Controller.
Is there no way to enable this? Sending the menu key via adb input keyevent doesn't work and the little ribbon that some application have don't show up either. Seems weird to remove such an essential functionality.
First screenshot shows trying to set a background with Nova. Second shows what's supposed to be there.
If Google doesn't bring back the 3 dots menu in Android M, then I think our only hope may be to see it restored through an Xposed module. GravityBox has a "force overflow menu button" in its miscellaneous tweaks menu but it does not seem to work on Lollipop, unfortunately. I've already asked the GravityBox developer, @C3C076, if he can fix that option in a future update of his module but he's going to be very busy with a project at his job until further notice.
I'm curious if anyone was ever able to figure this out. Not being able to get to the menu on some sideloaded apps is killing me. Do custom ROMS (AOSP or CM) have this same limitation?
Yeah I really need the 3 dots as well. Setting up vnc client and can't disconnect. Too bad there isn't some app to force the bottom menu bar, or an app that could bind the 3 dot function to a button the nexus remote would be nice. I'm assuming a custom rom doesn't suffer from this.
I found a solution! These are floating nav buttons. I used to use them when I had a Nook Color and it only had 1 physical button and app implementation for softkeys wasnt very great yet. They work on Nexus Player Marshmallow! You need a mouse or a pointing device though and these have to be sideloaded.
Floating Soft Keys *Root*
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhoadster91.floatingsoftkeys
Works great - doesnt auto hide but everything seems to work fine.
-or-
Button Savior - Root Version
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey
Also works. Has an Auto Hide feature which is good. Less ability to edit stuff since there is a paid version. It will ask you to change accessibility services when you start, but it will then also say that device does not have this feature or something like that. The NP does. You have to go to Settings, Accessibility, Services, and then activate it. Then the app will work fine!

I tried out Button Savior on my Nexus Player with Android 6.0 but it isn't the universal solution that I was hoping for. There are still some apps such as AdAway and Xfinity TV Go which do not work when the soft menu button (four squares) is clicked on. The function works in ZArchiver but DroidMote Client already has this capability in the form of its three lines menu button.
Ya I believe Xfinity TV Go app doesnt use the dot menu though. It's a sliding menu from the left side. I believe you can click and drag it open in Lollipop but not in Marshmallow.

hamburger menu access big screen

Hi everyone
Strange question but...
On such a larger screen than I'm use to.
Is there a better way to reach one handed the slide out hamburger menu in most apps?
Usually I use my thumb but it's such a stretch to get to the top corner, some apps do slide out from the side but seem inconsistent. I'm finding it very difficult.
I am rooted and was wondering any app or modification I could use to help me.
Thanks you for listening!

Okay, some roms have what you might want. Basically I recommend flashing pimps rr from androidfilehost.com. In settings go to configurations then gestures then pie control and enable it. Then with pie control there will be home, back, recent and 3 dots (...) which will be the hamburger menu in any app. You can customise stuff and this should help you out.
Thanks for your reply. Mainly want it for apps, but didn't want to flash a new rom.
If I hold the nexus 6p at the bottom of the phone, my thumbs are a real stretch to the hamburger menu or slide out.
I will take a look at what you have posted cheers man

I had a look at some apps but most just seem to be to access apps and not the hamburger icon. As far as I know you would need to flash a rom with this pie control gesture or you might not be able to do it at all.
You could give LMT a try, might have an option for what you need.

Sorry, just got back to this thread. Are you still having an issue?
Don't know if any other roms have this yet, but ABC rom does.
Huawei ported their one handed mode over to AOSP(I believe this was the story).

Thanks for replys. Still trying to get this to work.
Is it possible to set the back button in a app to toggle the hamburger menu? That would be handy because instead of backing out of the app slide from left in stead.
Cheers for patience, I did use the piepointer but found it quite difficult to use sometimes.
