My case Dilemma- need ur thoughts

OK managed to snatch one of the only/few tilts available in my area last Friday and now, after a week of use I've noticed I hate the ATT case I bought: The leather, plastic clip, top-loading case, SUCKS!
I work in an ER so speed, quality, ease of use is paramount. My major problem with this case is that 1. I press buttons trying to pull it out and 2. the belt clip is not centered well so when I try to orient it horizontally on my scrubs the opening end tips downward toward the floor.
SO, I've been searching around the forums, looked at a TON of different cases. So far I like the look of this: http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=6562
BUT I don't like the plastic over the keyboard and how annoying is that flap when you're trying to talk on the phone? I don't want to be fiddling with a GD flap while talking. Does the flap flip all the way back on itself?
SO, I need a well-balanced, high quality plastic clip (quick releases are good), that does not have cumbersome flaps (or at least has flaps that fold back on the case/go away when used as a phone).

I received mine this week and am satisfied. There is no hole to access the reset button, but that's a minor issue.

It seems that you can't slide the keyboard out when using this case... am I mistaken?

I don't know about the book-style case, but I have the PDAir flip case, which has the flap hinge at the bottom. On that case, the front flap folds back very nicely. The snap strap on the top that holds the front flap closed doesn't fold back so well, but I've only had the case 2 weeks so it'll probably loosen up a bit over time.

To slide the keyboard, you do need to unsnap the cover and fold it back. The phone can still be left in the case. I rarely use the keyboard, but this could be a major issue for those that do.

I think I need something that protects the screen too... I'll have to think it over...

Sorry, I have no pictures. There are images without the phone on the Boxwave site.
There have not been any problems with the clip and screw.
I do use a screen protector, but this case does leave the screen open, a feature I was seeking.

Screw fell out of my NIKI

Last night, after I flashed the newest Mary ROM, it turned off suddenly and would not turn back on. I heard something rattling around in there so I took off the battery cover and removed the battery. Didn't see anything, so I took out the stylus to see if it was making the noise. When I shook the phone (gently), a very very very tiny screw flew out of the phone.
The phone now will randomly turn itself off.
I have no idea where this screw goes. I think I have to take the phone apart to look.
Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone know how the screw could've come loose?

when i took my niki apart to line up the case better (HTC Build is [email protected]!) two screws that hold the slider on were loose!!! in fact weren't even tightened up, which is odd, as all the others had some kinda blue glue holding them in. :/
so yes, mine were loose

oh wow. were those two loose screws very very very tiny? the one that fell out of mine were smaller than screws that you use to hold glasses together.

is there an online guide on how to open and take niki apart? Because also my phone fell and the slider is a bit lose on the bottom side..

did you work it out? i took apart my nike to rebuid it a bit better, the back was creaking after last time i took it apart..
the screw could have come from a bunch of places, i noticed a small screw holding the mainboard in and one holding the small pcb at the top with the speaker etc.. its probably one of them. i'd screw it back in asap though.

No. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to go buy a kit that I can use with those itty bitty screws. I hope to do it soon. Will report back to let you know where that little bugger came from.

what size tools are you guys using?
I sent my husband to the store to get tools so I can put this cursed screw back in my phone but the kit he got was too big! What kind of tools are you guys using to take your phones apart?? Where might I get some??

im not sure where you can get them - most likely any hardware store, online, ebay. there are 2 types of screws in the nike.. you'll need a torx screwdriver (a t6 should do it) to get it open, and a real small philips (not sure about size.. just real small lol) for a couple of screws inside..

I'm pretty sure the one we tried was a t6. I'll have to verify.

I know this is slighty offtopic and i apologise. However, after you tightened your case up did it eliminate all the 'wobble' when the device was closed?

2 Tips i thought of today at lunch!

Now i am sure that people have thought about this in the past but i searched the interwebs and have not seen anyone actually post this. I decided to spend my lunch time putting my G1 under the knife.
First of all. I am not responsible in any way for whatever YOU (the end user) does to your phone. Im not just a ass hat wanting people to break they're phones, but do this at your own risk.
now.
anyone that has ever been unable to hear the conversation normally (with your phone at your ear no speakerphone) might be able to benefit from this.
If you remember the 2g iphone trick of making the speakers louder this is essentially the same thing. get yourself a paper clip and bend one of the sides out so you have a poker. clean all the ear gungle out. then from the far left of the ear piece poke GENTLY through then sorta dig it out so you dont leave pieces behind. in the center of the hole you will run into a more solid piece leave it alone when you hit it. then you can repeat from just a touch left of the LED.
I did this and went outside my building (i work right next to a major freeway) for the first time i was able to hear my call VERY clearly. I was very excited.
okay now for the second tip.
This one is pretty useful for people who put the phone to their left ear. reason being is (at least for me) my finger always finds a way to leave prints on the camera cover.
simple fix.
take the battery cover off and use the rounded part of the paper clip you may have used earlier. get a square of Toilet paper and put a little force onto the camera cover from the INSIDE OF THE BATTERY COVER.
You will notice on the front that you can use your fingernail to peel the piece off.
The pictures i will add are at 1mp so most people can see them in full size on their monitors without having to zoom out/in or whatever.
once again. use at your own risk. let me know what you think!

Actually, those are pictures demonstrating the difference with the camera cover on and off

not really worth it unless you got extra time and my lunch time is not... juss plain but yea nicce lil mods might try them out and post my results

Ohhh I see. I didn't read in your post that you were adding pictures to compare the difference, but geez it sure does make one. What about protection though? won't the lens be exposed?

the camera eye has another cover over it. ive been using it this way now for a few days. doesnt seem all that more exposed.

That extra cover on the camera broke on my G1 a couple months ago. There's only one problem with this idea. If the back cover gets scratched it's pretty cheap to replace, if the camera lens gets scratched it's not so cheap.

HTC One Teardown (Really not that bad)

Hey Guys i recently dropped my device into some water, no biggie device still worked and everything, but it was an excuse to get a device with slightly better Bin, so i filed a insurance replacement. So i figured i had already screwed it up, why not take it apart before sending it back.....
As with probably everyone we have all seen the IFIXIT tear-down of our device and they had some issues taking it apart, and even damaging the plastic bezel on the housing. So i was intimidated, but i wanted to see if it really was that hard.....
Guys its NOT HARD AT ALL....The hardest part is the plastic on the sides is actually pretty soft, but the only damage i had was before i heated the device up i tried trying to pry the speaker cover off with just a screwdriver (bad idea). This gave me some very very slight damage where i was prying against the plastic. With the heat and then pry this wont happen. (the adhesive is ridiculous by the way, some very strong stuff (I blame 3M)
Step 1: Heat up device with a hairdryer at the bottom speaker cover, your going to need to get it pretty hot (be careful, your speaker is under that)
Step 2: With device still nice and toasty take a spreader ( i used a guitar pick, but i was thinking a hot razor blade slid under might be more effective)
Step 3: Gently work spreader under speaker cover and work from one end to the other, I used a razor blade to get a gab and then work it off, wasn't to hard since the adhesive is warm and easy to peel off the cover. (be careful, you still have to use that adhesive to put it back on, or use another adhesive)
Step 4: Once bottom speaker cover is off take your spreader and place it between the black part of the housing and the silver part (essentially the phone is placed in a aluminum shell, and you need to get it out).
Step 5: With Spreader placed between the chases gently slide from one end to the other, on the right side by the speaker cover is a white tab, slowly leverage this tab separating the black housing from the silver housing, then pry up from one side to the other tell you get a decent gap.
Step 6: Take your separator and go a side of your phone, doesn't matter which one is done first, just like the previous step, place your spreader between the black housing from the silver, and gently slide from the bottom up, if your doing it right you will hear 3 clicks and that side is separated.
Step 7: Take your spreader and repeat Step 6 on the other side until you hear three clicks.
Step 8: Take spreader back to the bottom and gently pry up pulling the black housing out of the silver Back housing, while doing this you may need another spreader to pry the bottom and then go around the sides to make sure it comes out freely.

Man, excellent photos showing us the goods. What i wanna know is that the heck causes the power button to sink in the way it does. Seems hit and miss with these. Some people get very responsive power buttons, others get mushy clicky feels. Weird.

I couldnt do that to my phone. Were you able to put it back together and have it still look good and function as before?

Yes it works just fine, i have been abusing it on purpose, it has yet to screw up, I love this phone. But i have to send it in here soon lol

Here is the power button, it has a black sticker over the top, but the button is just a little piece of plastic that pushes the little button, not much contact area really.

Iiiiinteresting. I remember when the HTC One X was new, i took that think apart and bent the casing of it and ended up cracking the plastic casing. Made me sad, then i found all the parts on ebay to get it back to "mint" condition. Exciting. :good:

Yea I'm in cali and got my medical license. Smoke on!!!! Anyways. I got a gap on top speaker cover. Is it held on with adhesive?? I'm thinking about using a hair drier to heat it up and hopefully get rid of the gap.. if you can get picture of back side of top speaker grill I would greatly appreciate it. :thumbup: thank you in advance

If you have a gap, there is no need to take the phone apart.
Just get some super glue in there and clamp tight.
And here are the OEM replacement parts if you screw up

I was wondering. Is it possible to ONLY touch the body (ie the housing + speaker grills) and replace them? There are a lot of people who scratched their ones and may want to replace the outside.

In the picture, it seems you have thoroughly torn down the entire phone.
Some people may wish to simply change the speaker grills or the rear case (metal + plastic sides). On a scale of 1-10, how hard would that be?

A Peak Inside the Priv

Just thought you all would like to take a little look under the cover of the Blackberry Priv. Apologies for image quality and lack of complete disassembly, I didn't want to burn my bridges for the warranty just for opening the back cover. If any of you are braver than I and feel like delving deeper, taking the cover is very easy. Just pry the left and right sides away with your fingernails so it is loose. Remove the SD card and SIM card tray. Then very carefully pry the top of the cover away from the device. Then simply slide the slightly tilted cover off the bottom, away from the speakers. From there you can see all the goods! I was just curious if I could find a discernible difference between the Samsung S series antennas and the Priv, for the sake of future MFT compatibility. It seems as though they both have the same antennas so the hardware difference must be chip-level. Bummer. Also you can see why the right side gets so hot with the battery and antennas sitting there.

The front bottom is taken up by the speaker assembly, it's relatively large; it fills the entire bottom lip of the back case.

Do you have a US or EU model?

I was thinking about opening the back and filling the empty space that plague the non-wireless charging variants of this phone

Can you test the speaker? Reports online, including my own Priv, only the left works(Mono), but in this picture it shows the Priv having both Left and Right speakers. Can you take a picture of the front of the phone where the speakers are?
I'm confused as to why they would include L & R stereo speakers but only the Left works, is the R disabled? or did we all get Priv's that are defective. I had a feeling the whole bottom was a speaker grill, and this confirms it......

The whole bottom is definitely not a speaker. It's only the left third or so.

I also want to know the answer to this. Are units defective? It definitely shows two so why does everyone only hear mono sound from the left?

I don't think there's anything of the sort going on. Based on the pictures, since I'm not confident enough to peel the back off my own Priv, it looks like the thing you see on the right (left in the pic) is the control board for the 3.5mm jack combined with the mic, which presumably exists down there, since there's no other spot at the bottom of the unit where a mic could possibly be. It definitely only has the one speaker, but as far as I'm concerned, it's pretty exceptional for a phone. At least, I have no qualms with the sound from it, certainly much louder than any other phone I've had.
Forgot to add, I'm also confident that there's only one speaker because using Poweramp and toggling the Mono output setting, as well as the balance from Left to Right, everything only sounds like it comes from the one speaker.

Sorry guys, my mistake. I hadn't even tested my speakerphone until today. I based my assumption on the fact there is a baffle material under the span of the case baffle and the "L" and "R" label on the plastic assemblies on the board. I hadn't tried to disassemble it further. There is someone on YouTube that will give a complete teardown in a couple of days so if I don't see it posted I'll crack my phone open again to investigate.

I just can't believe the OEM cover already scratches the Priv, I can see where are the pressure point of the plastic in just 2 days....
That is why I hate Hard Cases.

Just remove from the case and pull plastic button inserts out. Take a mini philips screwdriver like for eyeglasses and scrape the little piece of plastic out on both sides. There will be 2 on left and 2 on right then use super glue to adhere the plastic buttons directly to where the little plastic pieces were above and below the buttons. It works for me and no indentions.

Should have done that before but I am humanly struggling with my "OCD" and trying to forget about it, but will leave it like that as the damage is already done and I really want to save the hassle with an exchange.

I think they addressed the problem because the rivets on the one I received the other day were flat as heck and did not protrude like photos I've seen. There wasn't anything to cut with an exacto even if I wanted to. It's still a plastic piece of junk though ($40?!) and I decided to just use a pocket pouch...brings me back to the G1 days
