rooting my S5 with new Marshmallow update - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a S5 with the new Marshmallow update via the Telus network in Canada. I had root for the Lollipop but took it out so I could update without problems. Lo and behold the Marshmallow update went in without a hitch but when I tried to flash TWRP with ODIN it didn't work. Am I missing something or does rooting the Marshmallow update require a new TWRP version? I used TWRP and SUPER SU last time to root Lollipop and al I did was put SUPER SU in a folder and flashed TWRP and then installed SUPER SU with TWRP and I was rooted. I just want the easiest step by step way to root my S5 again with the Marshmallow update. My provider is Telus from Canada.

Which model S5?
Unless MM locked your bootloader, TWRP 3.0.0.0 and SuperSU 2.71 beta are what I used to root MM
ODIN 3.10.7

SM-G900W8VLU1DPD3 Baseband Version Model #SM-G900W8 Build# MMB29M.G900W8VLU1DPD3 These are all the pertinent numbers. Do you have the steps needed to unlock and then ROOT. I'm not sure if the bootloader is locked. Hopefully you can help me get rooted again.

I wasn't thinking when I first read your post. If you"re looking for the MM Firmware I think I have what you are after. I got it from the S Mobile site, so if the guys don't mind me posting it with this reply here it is. I just tried to upload it and it's too big so if you have a way please tell me how and I'll get it to you. Even zipped it's like 1.2 GB.

I actually updated through Samsung Kies. And re-rooted. Though I haven't found an ASOP ROM that works with the MM bootloader

sprint users Easy Downgrade to kitkat and gsm unlocking method follow this

warning
This method will not work anymore if you upgraded to QI5 new bootloader/baseband because it's locked to binery 5 it's impossible to downgrade and dev firmware will fail in odin.
This method will only works with older bootloaders only before QI5
I have successfully downgraded to kitkat after pull my hair for days and unlocked for any sim worldwide if you guys like kitkat like me and wanna unlock your sim network follow these institutions.
1,download developer kitkat firmware and flash via odin 3.10 this firmware is for developers without user apps and its empty but good thing is it will let us downgrade to kitkat bootloader no matter you are on 5.0,5.1 1,6.0.1 just flash.
2,after flash developer firmware dont let phone boot immediately go to download mode and flash twrp recovery.
3,after flash twrp recovery flash sprintxnoteRC2 kitkat rom this will boot flawlessly to kitkat.
4,if you like to try other n910p based kitkat roms go to twrp and backup (boot) thats your kernel of sprint xnote RC2 rom before flash any kitkat rom cuz i donno somehow kernel of sprint xnoteRC2 let boot every rom successfully without any errors.just after flash any rom immediately go to twrp restore and restore (boot) kernel that you made earlier from sprintxnoteRC2 rom.
4,FOR UNLOCKING download SSU APK this will work with kitkat if your phone says INVALID SIM CARD just install as normal APK and open it will ask for root permision PRESS GRANT and unlock then reboot if still your phone dosent get signal bars then go to dialer and dial ##72786# and press YES it will reboot automatically your phone and hopefully you will have signal on gsm sim. if SSU apk method does not work download gt galaxy tools apk and unlock.grant root permission to galaxy tools and open app go down and you'll see UICC unlock just hit and restart device . also you can unlock tethering hotspot permanently from galaxy tools . THATS ALL. I AM SHARING YOU GUYS MY EXPERIENCE I HAVE TESTED THIS METHOD ON MY DEVICE AND i HAVE SUCCESSFULLY UNLOCED MY N910P AND DOWNGRADED FROM 6.0.1 TO KITKAT

I MADE THIS THREAD SPECIALLY FOR NETWORK LOCKED N910P USERS TO TEMPORORY DOWNGRADE TO UNLOCK NETWORK. BUT IF YOU END UP USING KITKAT ROMS THE FINGERPRINT SENSOR WILL NOT WORK.
FIX FOR FINGERPRINT
Flash og5 5.1.1 bootloader only along with with Nadia 4.4.4 kernel flash in twrp and you get everything working with any kitkat rom.
Or flash 5.1.1 6.0.1 stock firmware the fingerprint will work fine and unlocking will stick permanently

Can you Odin any firmware after this?
If so, this is a game changer for kitkat lovers.
You can upgrade again to 5.1.1 & 6.0.1 n910p firmware but you cannot flash n910p official kitkat it will simply fail in odin.you can flash any kitkat n910p roms in twrp recovery with diffrent kernels also i have tested deodexed 4.4.4 n910p based rom and it works flawlessly with custom kernel .i have tested everything every firmware but sadly 4.4.4 n910p fail in odin .
Which kernel is it in that SprintxnoteRC2 rom? Any other kernel working with KitKat?
Ael kernel.

Ael kernel
how long has this kitkat developer firmware been leaked?
and can't you downgrade to official kitkat from the oldest 5.0.1? most of the "first new OS upgrade" won't block downgrades
6.0.1 --> 4.4.4 dev --> oldest 5.0.1 --> 4.4.4 official
edit:
also, does the dev firmware format internalsd like PB5?
Does the unlocking persist when upgrading to newer firmware?
Returned from PG1 to NK2 ( BoBCaTROM v2.0) following OP's tips. Since the purpose of flashing the dev tar is to update bootloader, I deleted the system file from the tar ball and ended up with a smaller file about 130 MB
download here.
From the attached screenshot we can see, the modem is AOF1, the kernel is AEL 5.5 (which is not shown in the screenshot).

This dev firmware i found accidently from a Chinese website they use to refurbish and spoof usa models to international models and resale again . I tried to flash official 4.4.4 but it fails in odin.its something to do with this developer firmware that it can let us downgrade to 4.4.4 .anyway you can use this dev firmware to downgrade and flash kitkat custom roms and kernels.
Binary invalid

Hmmm... After flashing this firmware, without rebooting and going into download mode, one has to flash TWRP & then any Kit-Kat based custom ROM. Got it! :good:

Root Sm-G930P on Android 7.0 (N) PLN

Hello,
I am running an SM-G930P with Nougat PLN firmware. I downgraded it to PK1 Marshmallow firmware to root it, and used this root method: https://idoneapps.com/forum/index.php?topic=616.0
It worked perfectly. However, when I tried to use the Nougat update file, it said it was corrupt. When I tried to root it in Nougat, it began bootlooping. Is there any way to root it in Nougat? All I need to really know is how to install TWRP.

There's not a way to root on Nougat yet, especially since it's on a beta firmware. TWRP isn't available on U.S Snapdragon Galaxy S7's as our bootloaders are locked.

You'd want to downgrade to PL6 and the flash the unlocked PL2 to root, but TWRP still isn't possible.
as many have said. ZERO TWRP UNTIL BOOTLOADER GETS UNLOCKED (which probably won't happen) /thread closed

Planning to buy G935W8, had a few questions

Looking to buy this phone soon but I was just wondering about a few things. Im buying the canadian variant G935W8.
1. Can this device be rooted on nougat as well or only marshmallow? Im buying it brand new so I think it will probably be running the latest firmware.
2. Is there any issues with unlocking the bootloader? Is it neccesary to do so if you want root and custom roms?
the bootloader is not locked on the w8 as its the exynos variant and yes nougat can be rooted its the same as 935f

Thanks. Also another question I had. If the phone comes with marshmallow and I root it will I be able to install nougat roms directly or will I have to update the bootloader and modem? In that case would it be better to update it to nougat first and then root?
Updating your phone would cause you to lose root anyways as the file structure on nougat is completely different then marshmellow.
Rooting also prevents OTA updates, so you would end up having to install nougat manually.
I suggest you upgrade your software then root it. You can use systemless root from magisk. Using TWRP just flash the latest magisk file and you are rooted. The file will automatically root your phone as part of the installation process.

If you get it with MM (highly unlikely) just don't do anything and you should get an OTA notification otherwise you can download Odin, google it as I don't have a link and nougat from here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767144483 and you can flash it yourself now rooting is a little different then it used to be do a search on the s7 edge for the info on that
the reason is yes you will need to download the BL not sure about modem but you might as well do it too
I just rooted my G935W8 running 7.0 by following the instructions in the first half of this video.

Unless you have a Chinese variant, you cannot unlocked Snapdragon bootloaders on the S7.
I've went back and forth between Nougat-MM several times. You can't go back earlier than PH1 due to the bootloader being locked, but that gives you the choice of 2 MM firmwares, PH1 and PI3.
Can anyone point me to directions on how to roll back to Marshmallow?

That has the resources you are looking for. Just grab either the PH1 or PI3 firmware and then do a normal Odin flash. You will be downgraded to stock MM.

i just did this in my s7 edge for verizon. Tried to flash the unlocked firmware and it failed. It woudlnt' boot afterwards. (it was first on 6.0.1). I then accidentally flashed a nougat stock rom. After this, I flashed a verizon 6.x.x fimrware and then the tmobile firmware. ALl through ODIN of course. I thikn as long as it works through ODIN, you are fine. It may take a lot of trial and error though

Rooting / TWRP

Heyyo, Slenderman8090 here! I am currently on the newest firmware build that Verizon Sent out. I am downgrading so I can flash/root OB6 Firmware. TWRP doesn't seem to want to flash via ODIN, but I keep getting an AUTH error on ODIN. I am a 3 Year patron of XDA/General Development, and I am not familiar with Verizon and it's lockdowns. So, what ever I can do, please let me know.
Thanks so much,
Slenderman8090
EDIT:
I HAVE FIGURED OUT HOW TO FIX IT, NOW AROMA DOESN'T WORK ON MY TWRP, WHAT VERSION IS NEEDED?

As far as everything I've been able to keep up with and read, in order for our Verizon (hltevzw) Galaxy Note 3 phones to be bootloader unlocked with a properly functioning TWRP recovery that also handles AROMA files as well, TWRP v2.8.7.0 (4.4 (the Verizon "hltevzw" variant), is the correct/proper variant that you'll need to flash onto your phone instead of the version that you've got currently. Also, it apparently doesn't matter at all whether or not you've already got a newer version of TWRP recovery installed, any newer version after v2.8.7.0 can't flash AROMA. So since you want to flash AROMA files, TWRP v2.8.7.0 (4.4) is apparently the last official version to be released which supports AROMA. I'm not sure why it didn't carry on into newer releases, but I'm sure the devs had a good enough reason for not doing so.
