I like the edge notifications with the built-in messaging and email apps, but would prefer to use 3rd party messaging apps and gmail. SMS is also a concern because my car and my wearable (garmin) only send/receive texts via the messaging app. Are there any 3rd party messaging / email apps that will work with the edge, my car/wearable, etc.? Or am I stuck with the built-ins if I want those notifications to work?
Thanks,
Pete
My go-to 3rd-party SMS app, Textra, works fine with my car's Bluetooth. It reads messages to me out loud phonetically, and the car recognizes new text messages and displays a notif on the car screen (Ford Sync basic). I assume this is what the default S7E SMS app does as well? Question mark there only because I've never used the default app - Textra is always the first app I install on a new phone or after a clean wipe, along with SwiftKey keyboard.
As far as email goes, I've only ever used the stock email app for work email, although I do use the stand-alone GMail app for personal email. I've never thought about it, but you're right, the Gmail app doesn't give me the option to read emails aloud while I'm in my car - it just plays the default notification sound through the car speakers.
Hope this gives you some help at least.

I see many people use chompsms and handcent application on their Hero. Why? I have downloaded the chompsms to try it out, but I had to check both applications to remove the "new message" notification in the status bar.
What is the advantage of applications like chompsms?
I can't say anything about ChompSMS or Handcent, because I don't use SMS enough to worry about using something "better" than the default app.
However, your first point was that you had to clear two notifications - in the settings for the standard SMS app, you can switch off notifications so presumably this is what you should do if you want to use another app for SMS.

It used to be on the CDMA Hero, that the default messaging app was buggy and drained our batteries severely. Anymore, it's a preference thing. Some of them have more features, a different look, etc.
For me, handcent has the advantage of a nice popup option built in and the ability to automatically resize pictures for MMS.
I use handcent sms because of the many settings-options you have and because of the blacklist function!
Standard app was just too.. standard
just installed Handscent sms, it looks identical to iPhone sms, lol.
SMS Popup is the best one I've tried.
I found the Handcent UI options weren't as sleek as the default app.
Was running handcent but when in landscape mode it crashes so switched to chompsms no more issues
i know i was reading it somewhere, but when installing a 2nd sms application like handscent or chomp, dual notifications occur.. is there way to remove that?
Go to defualt messages app. hit menu turn off notifcations.

Tried that and it doesn't work. I get both the Handcent and the envelope icon. It is getting annoying.
When I get a voice mail notification, I'm seeing the "push" notification of Visual Voicemail in it's SMS form.
Anyway that I can hide the voice mail SMS from the SMS client?
I'm currently using Handcent SMS, but I have not checked it happens with Sense stock messaging.
If you're using handcent, just blacklist it.
I didn't see those notifications under stock SMS, but handcent and chompSMS both show it. Best way to deal with it was to blacklist it. I've had mixed success with handcent (sometimes it still shows even if blacklisted) but blacklisting it on ChompSMS removed the issue completely.
I've come to realize that my default Messaging App on my Samsung Galaxy S4 seems to be causing a lot of lags lately. (That or my keyboard).
I've tested out a few Messaging Apps (Go Pro, Texter, Google Messenger, etc) but I find they're not as good as the default S4 Messenger.
Tried Texter, which is great! But when you get a text, it shows up in your notifications, but when you swipe the notification to clear the notification bar, it counts the swipe as a read message (wtf??).
Also, unlike the default messenger, it doesn't have an unread messages on the icon. So you actually have to open the app the see if you have any unread messages.
Any fixes or suggestions for better messaging apps? Or a way to update the current default app?
It would probably be easier if you'd enumerate some features you'd want said app to have.
Those unread badges are a feature of the launcher, not the texting app. Or rather, I myself have not seen any messaging app with that feature included.
As to why it doesn't work with other apps, it's probably because the default launcher only supports the default app.
In other words, you need another launcher to have those on other apps, but most launchers offer this as a premium feature only.
Also, I believe that, for some apps, it matters which way you swipe away the notification.
e.g., Swipe right - mark as read; Swipe left - just clear it.
I'm trying to synch Hangouts app as my default SMS provider, but there's no way in this ROM!
My problem is that I don't want to use two apps with notifications when one of them is capable of doing both tasks. When I had my nexus 5, I used to send and receive SMS only by using Hangouts (an app that I also use for many other things), but now I don't have any SMS options: Neither an option to choose the default app for SMS in my system nor a function in Hangouts to add my SMS number as an account.
Does anyone know how to sort it out?
Thank you!
Hangouts just removed SMS capability. You need a switch to a new SMS app.
But the last version of Hangouts of my Nexus has SMS capability, how can I get a similar version?
Hello,
When i block a sms, it removes it from my home screen of the android messages app(archives it), but future messages still keep on showing on the
home screen. What does the app do for blocking then? I dont get the point of blocking a sms contact.
Anyone having same issue? Any solution?
Note: I have faced this issue on other devices too, so this is definitely app issue.
Use different app e.g. Microsoft SMS Organizer
I also faced the same problem. The default app doesn't work as expected for me.
SMS organizer has categorization of SMSs e.g. personal, transaction and promotional. Promotional sms are not notified to me unlike the other category, so conveniently I don't have to block.
