Question 1. This just happened right now my s5 is starting up and sometimes it shows the s5 startup powered by android sometimes not after that it proceeds in starting up with the usual sound effects but the problem is the screen is just plain black. Now i believe my phone is proceeding to the homescreen cause i tried to ring it and it did plus my ringtone music played. I tried pulling the battery multiple times and start the phone but still same result. I also tried the taking the battery off and pressing the power button for a minute. also tried the safe mode, but none of them worked. What do you think? is it a firmware or a hardware issue?
Question 2. Im still not sure the cause of the problem. Because of the black screen issue i I wanted to backup my files saved in the phones memory. However my phone is locked through my fingerprint and I guess because of that when I connect my phone to the pc im unable to access my files. Is there anyway I can access my files through a pc and unlock it using my phone's fingerprint alternative password?
TIA
If the initial logo sometimes won't show up, it sounds more like hardware as that is not part of the ROM
If your phone is secured by fingerprint, wait for it to boot, press the home or power key to wake it up, then swipe like normal, if it's just a faulty screen, the fingerprint swipe should still work

hey thanks alot swiping the through the black screen unlocked my phone. so do you think it is a hardware issue I assume its the LCD?
but if ever the LCD is broken , the finger scanner should also not be functional? or im wrong?
The finger scanner is a separate button (Home button)
There are two parts to the screen iirc, the digitizer (Touch) and the panel itself for displaying, could be just the panel if the digitizer is still working
You can use this to control your phone without a screen, might help

i'm experiencing the same problem again. Before I guess after 40-50 restart I was able to open my s5 with a screen, but now it happened again and the difference is that when I boot it the "Samsung s5 powered by android" rarely shows and it will proceed until the home screen with a black screen?
i have already removed the battery, charged it, changed battery, boot it in recovery and safe mode but still all i'm getting is a black screen.
Any idea how to fix this? Is this a hardware issue already

Hi kenchii17
As you didn't provide answer to @*Detection* 's suggestion for backup, here comes another:
[TOOL] Tickle My Android
To get rid of all this inconvenience, I would suggest a complete reinstall. Clear everything through Recovery and then flash a new Stock ROM via ODIN.
Nice regards.

This thing is a month old and I really hope I can find a way to fix it. It is rooted so I doubt I can get a replacement...
I've seen other people with screen malfunctions where it shows weird colors after booting, but mine shows nothing. The Samsung boot animation doesn't show, nor does the ATT boot logo (although the sound plays). I can still use my phone by guessing where to touch and everything works fine.
Are there apps that can (with super user access) somehow disable the screen?
Is there a way to factory reset without being able to see what is on the screen? I tried the "Volume Up + Volume Down + Home", but the screen doesn't show anything.
Finally, is there a way to reset the ATT Galaxy S4 via Kies? I haven't been able to find one.
I'm guessing this has to be hardware since the boot logo doesn't show. Surely even if an app disabled the screen, it wouldn't be running before the logo appeared.

If the boot logo doesn't show (not the boot animation, but the very first logo when you first power on and it vibrates) then it's hardware. If the screen goes out after that like at the boot animation, then it could be that you messed up or something messed up a system file. This happened to me when I didn't set the permissions on my build.prop, it gave me black screen with blue LED and simply fixing the permissions in Safestrap fixed it.

Hello, yesterday I started having a problem with my i9505 that I never seen before....
I noticed that when I unlocked the screen, the screen kept black and just the led on the buttons turned on, so I tought the phone had frooze, and I took the battery out then put it back and turned the device on again...
The "samsung galaxy s4 i9505" scren appeared just fine, the cm splashscreen was fine too, but when it finished booting, the screen went black...
I noticed that the screen doesn't give any haptic feedback, the buttons that are lit give haptic feedback normally, and the home button also don't have any feedback, even by pressing it, or holding it...
If I take screenshot, the screen flashes white, but goes back to full black....
If I hold the power button, the options "Power off - Reboot - Airplane mode" appears, and the buttons work, but if I press outside the popup, the screen goes black...
So, there's no hardware problem related to the screen, since it works fine while booting, and on recovery mode
But there's something software related that makes the screen keep black after booting, and it's not brightness related, since the menu by holding power button shows correctly...
Has anyone seen anything like this?
My device is an i9505
The ROM I'm using is optimized cm12.1 from JDCTeam:

I've seen this before, but it took me a while to remember where. Usually, a black screen as you're describing occurs when the device has no launcher app. Since there is no launcher app there's no way to do anything. Now, it's unlikely you removed all your launchers so I can only guess you have a software issue with the launcher app itself.
Try doing a dirty flash of the ROM, if you haven't already done so. Don't wipe data or internal storage, but do wipe the cache. See if that solves the problem.

I alreadly dirty flashed the ROM wiping cache and dalvik cache
You're probably going to have to wipe everything then. Make a nandroid backup however, as you can restore your data partition after flashing.
Could be a Rom bug too...

I hope you tried reflashing your CM12. If that didn't work clear all data and flash a freshcopy of CM12. It could be a problem with your Rom too.... you could get an update soon..
I had the black screen problem and it turned out to be the silicon case I had just bought for it. Guessing it was pressing buttons together or something causing a corruption. After restoring it twice, twigged this and binned the case. Problem solved lol
Phone screen is black, but phone still "works".. Cannot get screen to come back on!
I have no idea what happened, 5 minutes after being in my pocket I pulled it out and the screen was un-responsive.
The notification light is still on, power light, etc. The power button works, I can push and hold and reboot and the two bottom buttons on the phone light up. I was able to "swipe" my password and it vibrated and accepted it, I am getting vibrate notifications too. I just have a black screen and I can't figure out what to do!
I am rooted, but I haven't had any changes to the phone in a few weeks since I had rooted. I tried using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395 but I cannot figure out how to get the device to show up in the program to use.
I am at a loss on what to do...

Nope, no nothing. No logos, no screen flicker, no colors of any sort - just black. The LED goes blue as it boots up, etc, so I know it does power up.. and once it is done I can even swipe my password and it gives the feedback vibrate..
Just in case this was an issue with the root and whatnot I flashed the stock with Odin and I still am getting black screened.
I contacted VZW support last night, and the chat rep told me they would have to just replace the phone. I am guessing this may be a hardware issue.
Yea if there is no logo whatsoever when you first turn it on, it sounds like a hardware issue, not a ROM issue
I forget exactly which logo shows first (S5 I think) that isn't part of the ROM afaik, the Samsung animated logo is the ROM, so if you don't even get the one before the Samsung animation, doesn't sound good
Is it the G900F? If yes, the only thing I can think that might possibly work, is this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/g900f-debrick-img-lollipop-t3240626
Don't use unless it's the G900F

I don't believe it's G9000F... and I am fairly certain now that it isn't a software issue since everything else 'loads', just not my damn screen.. lol.
Thanks for your help though
The reason I posted that link, is, if the bootloader has corrupted, it is possible you won't get any logo at all, and that debrick image basically tricks the phone into using the MicroSD card to boot into download mode from, where you can recover the main storage
It should tell you under the battery which model S5 it is
If the screen doesn't even light up, then it sounds more like hardware
See if this gives you access
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395
It is connector issue.
Either connector is slight loose or if not then need to Change the connector.
My one has same problem.
Solved for less than 10$.
Sent from my SM-G900I using XDA-Developers mobile app
I only use my S4 to listen to Spotify and Podcast, no other apps are present. I use it until I the replacement Headphone thingy comes for my Nexus 5x.
It's my old phone and it worked great until yesterday when my screen went completely pink and then my phone restarted. Now it's stuck on the first logo screen.
Not the Samsung animated logo screen, but the very first completely white text Samsung Galaxy S4 logo, I can't post pictures.
I am using a Cyanogenmod Rom because of the memory leak bug on stock rom.
I can't boot to recovery because it just boots for few seconds, then shuts off, vibrates 2 times and goes back into the boot screen where it's stuck.
The vibration thing happens everytime I try to boot the phone. The logo comes up, it shuts down, vibrates twice and then it gets stuck on the logo indefinitely.
I can boot to Download Mode and I can't boot to Safe Mode.
Any ideas what I could do? I really want to listen to stuff again.
Could be a power button issue. Open the phone, clean the power button contacts with a bit of pure alcohol, quickly press and release the power button several times in a row using a bit more pressure than usual, reassemble the phone, and see if it works.

It's still stuck the same way.
When I got to the Recovery Screen once, the screen turned yellow and phone restarted.
The power button may need to be replaced. Do you have a multimeter to test the connections?
@audit13: I've got a feeling the power button isn't his issue. On a properly working S4 the screen wouldn't flash a particular color before rebooting. Given that this happened to him suddenly, I think he has an issue with the SoC itself.

I have a almost dead S4 i9515 model here, it stopped working.
Here at home I plugged it in and it vibrated continue and nothing more.
Tried a couple of times to go to recovery (unrooted, so the standard recovery) and one time I got a Samsung logo with something blue in the top left side of the screen and nothing else.
Cleaned the power button and started the phone and got the Samsung boot logo, but it got stuck in the logo loop.
How can I check the power button with a multimeter? Is there a trick to get to the connectors?
You need to remove the back frame to access the power button connectors. There should be there of them. Without the power button pressed, touch the probe across the outer two and see if there is any current being passed.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2l_6fwzuIwA
Will try it this weekend, if it is the button I will just take it out, and try it that way till I get a new button.
Thanks for the tip!
Well, the button was not the problem, see next post
While starting it won't pass the Samsung logo boot,
while starting via recovery (power, home vol-up) I still won't pass the Samsung logo screen, but now with the message in the top left screen 'Recovery Booting...'
It's dead I believe, the power button is okay, but after a few difficult boots, it wouldn't pass the Samsung logo.
But now it doesn't respond at all anymore.
Is there a way to access this phone?
Via adb or Odin? I don't think so, if the phone doesn't startup I can't do anything...?
It is bye S4 I guess...
I am blocked here too with a GT-I9506, and can't fin anything, so yeah, i guess it's dead, mine too
Time for something new...
Anyone managed to revive his I9506? I have similar problem, if you can guys look into it and tell me that you have tried this already:

I think it will be the best way. It's third day of flashing stock firmware from 4.3 to 5.0.1 NEE an TPL. There ware two times that phone actually booted to recovery and green android appeared. But then phone rebooted and still can't get up.
Woke up this morning and started using my phone, noticed that the screen became unresponsive for a few seconds at a time and then I saw some gray horizontal lines.
Did a battery pull and restarted the phone, however, the screen is completely black and I can still hear the boot sound.
It requires a pin to start completely and I can feel the vibration when I touch the location of the back button (the only navigation key available on the pin screen).
Since this started happening I have tried restarting several times and I have seen the "LG splash screen" once, it freezes, the boot sound plays and the screen goes black once again.
The phone is unrooted and has never been modified any at all. It is the US996 variant.
Has anyone ever faced this issue? Could it be the display itself and maybe a replacement LCD will fix the issuse?
UPDATE
Got past the pin screen and think the phone has fully booted, fingerprint scanner works, I can touch the navigation keys and get feedback and I am still getting notifications.
However, the main screen is still blank and the second screen shows the time surrounded by static surrounded. I have attached a photo.
Sounds like a hardware issue.

Had to send it in to LG to have it repaired
Oddly enough once it was returned the problem reoccured a few weeks later after using an aukey quick charge3.0 charger that I had. Which was when it happened the first time but I didn't make the connection until the second time around
I got rid of the phone though
No more LGs for me, I haven't had much luck with them
Throw that charger seems like or the cable or the charger itself gone bad ,one charger killed 2 of my phones not diferent brands
