First of all your device has to be ROOTED and you should to have installed "Root Explorer"
1.- Open your App "Root Explorer"
2.-Go to System->ETC and search for "Mixer_paths.xml" file
3.- Keep pushing untill it shows you a menu, slide down untill "Edit" option and click
4.- Slide down and look for "HEADPHONES" and change "HPHL Volume" value "19" to "20" and "HPHR Volume" value "19" to "20"
"R1X Digital Volume" Value="84" to 90" and "R2X Digital Volume" Value="84" to "90"
5.- Slide down and look for "HEADPHONES - REGULATION" and do the same change "HPHL Volume" value "19" to "20" and "HPHR Volume" value "19" to "20"
"R1X Digital Volume" Value="76" to 90" and "R2X Digital Volume" Value="76" to 90"
6.- Click in options and save it and then exit, make sure your settings are saved, if it creates a new file called "mixer_paths.xml.bak means that you did it correctly, and restart your phone and enjoy of your new sound louder, works for speaker and headphones.
Don't overdo it, I've tried this and the sound is way too loud and distorted on max volume. Instead put the digital volume values to 84, all of them, that's pretty much the limit at which sound won't distort and yet it will be louder than stock.

Notable Issues and Fixes1. Whatsapp notification delay : You might have noticed whatsapp notification doesn't show up that fast, the same might happen to other custom ROMs too.
Fix: Search and install "PNF Root" from google play store. It will ask for root accept it, then set these two parameters in settings as follows "Mobile heartbeat interval 6 minutes" "Wifi heartbeat interval 5 minutes". This will fix the delay issue with notification on whatsapp or maybe other applications too!
2. Low speaker/ earpiece volume: sound volume seems to be always low when it comes to cyanogen mod you can fix it without installing any kernels! Its simple and easy and will give you amazing sound output.
Fix: The fix is scattered in this thread but for others who might be having the same issue I will post it here with details.
Search and install "Ex File Explorer" from google play. Once you open it tap "menu" then navigate to "Root explorer" and turn it on" Then a new window will pop-up now tap on "Mount R/W". Then tap the radio button that says "RW" on path and system. We need to make it R/W to edit the sound file that will change the volume settings"
After doing that, navigate to the following location /device/etc/sound/t03g. Tap the file and open it as "text" now select "ES Note Editor" and locate the following lines in the text file.
we need to change two values. Scroll down a few times until you see this
</path>
<device name="speaker">
<path name="on">
There a few lines down you can see <ctl name="Speaker Volume" val="57"/>
Now just change the value to "63" so that the line will look like <ctl name="Speaker Volume" val="63"/> I found out that 63 is the maximum value. You could use 60 if that is way too louder for you.
Now we need to scroll down a little more down and locate this line <device name="earpiece"> now locate this line <ctl name="Output Volume" val= "62"/> edit the value to 62, if you have any lower value in there. I also changed <ctl name="AIF1 Boost Volume" val ="2"/> and <ctl name="AIF2 Boost Volume" val ="2"/>
After doing the above steps save the t03g file and go back to the es explorer/ root explorer settings and change back the values in Mount R/W to "RO" for both path and system.
Now tap okay and restart your phone. You will have amazing sound volume for speakers and call. Even better than Stock!!

Thanks for the excellent post & solutions. You seem to have mistyped the file locations which I've fixed in this post which is underlined in italics. Hope you can correct your original post making this one redundant. Thanks.

Hi guys, its Chenut, I've been playing with the nexus 5x and trying to figure a way to make the volumes louder well here are the steps.
Requirements:
ROOTED DEVICE
Es file explorer
Nexus 5x (V-tec version not snapdragon
Info: this is quite similar for the nexus 5 however LG has done a few mods to the code lines
I'm running cm13 but this guide should work on all aosp as long as the developers haven't deleted the mixer paths file.
Step 1. Open es file explorer and press the menu tab on the top left hand side, and press tools, then enable root explorer and then press the word root explorer next to it.
Step 2. Mount r/w and put /system from ro to rw
Step 3. Now press local , then device then find the folder system and then etc then find in that folder mixer paths xml
Step 4. Open it using ur desired note editor, just use the es default editor
Step 5. To increase volume of speaker, locate
<path name="speaker-gain-default">
And change
<ctl name="RX7 Digital Volume" value="84" />
The rx7 value 84 to 90, don't go over 90, beyond sounds distorted
Step 6. To increase headphone volume locate
<path name="headphones">
<ctl name="HPHL Volume" value="20" />
<ctl name="HPHR Volume" value="20" />
Change the HPHL VALUE AND HPHR VALUE TO 25, ITS UP TO U IF U WANT HIGHER VOLUME AT THE EXCEPTION OF DISTORTION.
Step 7. To increase incall volume locate
<path name="handset">
<ctl name="RX1 Digital Volume" value="84" />
Change rx1 value to 90 , higher its up to u.
That's all for now, in hoping soon to share how to increase mic sound as well as thermal throttling values,
Note: my default values are set by cyanogen,stock and aosp ROMs might be slightly higher.

Nice write up. Thanks!

I'm coming from a Nexus 4 to the 5x and noticed the headset volume is either not as loud or is muffled, cause I'm having a hard time hearing people. My wife is having the same issue with her's. She's coming from a gen 1 Moto x. Is this in our heads? Or could it be that we switched carriers as well? We went from Tmobile to Google's Fi. What do you guys think?
Chenut, i think headset path seems have no effect on earpiece volume in android 6.01...
Have you ever come across a situation when you are listening to a music with media volume at 50% then suddenly you got a call and the ringtone rings at 100% ( as this was set at full ) volume giving an unpleasant full volume surprise..
After doing some experiment I found the solution and like to share here:
1. You have to be rooted.
2. Use an app like ES explorer (or Amaze)
3. go to /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml
4. edit the file mixer_paths.xml with the note editor
under <!output paths--> .. <path name="speaker-and-headphones">
find this lines
<ctl name="RX1 Digital Volume" value =84"/>
<ctl name="RX1 Digital Volume" value =84"/>
Update the value to any lower number as suitable I have changed mine to 44 as:
<ctl name="RX1 Digital Volume" value =44"/>
<ctl name="RX1 Digital Volume" value =44"/>
5. Save and reboot.

in a5 2016 it is like this in mixer_paths.xml,
Code:
<!-- Output volume stage -->
<!-- media playback volume -->
<path name="gain-media-handset">
<ctl name="S2801 MIX1_LVL" value="0" />
<ctl name="DAC Gain" value="128" />
<ctl name="Earphone Volume" value="8" />
</path>
<path name="gain-media-speaker">
<ctl name="S2801 MIX1_LVL" value="0" />
<ctl name="DAC Gain" value="130" />
<ctl name="Speaker Volume" value="9" />
</path>
but nothing changed when i change the value, it doesn't sound louder, i tried up to 190 for dac gain & upt to 18 for speaker volume value
there is also a mixer_.paths_rev08.xml and i edited that one also but no luck.
I hope someone finds it because i am not used to have a phone with no volume mod It's no use to install an app that give a boost to play music or media louder inside the app itself because that does not make alarm or incoming calls louder (etc)
Try this.

and the headset volume for louder Music? please help me

Hey guys, so after rooting, no matter how much I edit these values in the mixer_paths.xml (in systems/etc) my phones headphone volume remains the same:
<ctl name="HPHL Volume" value="20" /> (originally 9)
<ctl name="HPHR Volume" value="20" /> (originally 9)
<ctl name="RX1 Digital Volume" value="85" /> (originally 84)
<ctl name="RX2 Digital Volume" value="85" /> (originally 84)
Has anyone had any luck with increasing their volume on a Nokia 5?
Cheers
I am just looking into it myself. First thing I didn't like is that there are over 20 files named "Mixer_paths_*something*.xml", unlike my last KK phone. Clearly the settings for various things have been spread through various files. There is a lot of crap in Nougat that is worse than what it was in KK, and this is just one of those things they insist on calling "progress".
Anyway, the section you post isn't the right part of the file to change settings for this, at least it wasn't in KK days. That's "initial mixer settings" section, and we need "headphones" or "speaker" section. But the problem is this:
<path name="speaker">
<ctl name="RX3 MIX1 INP1" value="RX1" />
<ctl name="SPK" value="Switch" />
</path>
That "Switch" value was a NUMBER, which we used to change and therefore obtain louder sound. I have no idea what value is given to "Switch" variable and where to find it, but that's what needs to be changed. Maybe.
Unless the right setting is in one of the other files, in which case we have to edit 30-odd files... which I'll try if I have to, when I have the time.
There are actually 20 variously named "mixer_paths" files, and editing ALL OF THEM makes no difference. Viper4Arise installs and runs, but makes no change to the sound at all.
I suspect that another equalizer is running and preventing us from getting a higher volume. Some people mention "MusicFX" and Dolby, but neither of them show up in my dock or list of apps.
I tried uninstalling Dolby through Titanium, but it says it can't find the apk file. Renaming 17 or so files with "Dolby" in the name causes the bootloop.
So I don't know. I don't have much hope for a solution, this isn't a very popular phone at all.
