Power saving: how does it work exactly? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi guys, when I know that I will use the phone not for so much time (for instance when I am at work) I use power saving, but I would like to know what it does exactly. I see that it low the brightness a little, that it underclock the CPU, but then? What other things does it?

Yes, I still received, sms, WhatsApp and GMail while power safe being on with Sync on also. With Sync off only GMail didn't push.

Yes u can use power saving when your battery is 100% if u wanted lol, but let's say u listen to Spotify in the car Bluetooth, it wont stay streaming in background it'll cut off but other than that it doesn't affect me negatively

I use it indeed since it doesn't limit basic functionality. But I noticed that when the phone is paired with car's bluetooth, sometimes it get disconnect. Can be due to power saving mode? What other things does the power save mode? For instance I noticed that with the same level of brightness, when I use power save mode the screen is dimmer than normal mode. Is that normal?

I tried again and the screen brightness is definitely dimmer when the power save mode is on, even if the light slide level is always the same.

With sync on and power saving on I don't receive Gmail messages. I have to update the app manually. So I think the it depends on power saving mode that limit background data sync.

But why if the level of brightness is the same, with power mode on it is dimmer? This doesn't has any sense.

Yes it makes it dimmer than it typically would be so conserve power

It does make sense, even if it is strange that with the same level of brightness, with power saving mode the screen is dimmer anyway. But the important thing is that it's normal and it's not a problem of my phone. What about the sync? I noticed that in power saving mode it doesn't sync even if auto sync is on. I have to refresh manually the mail and other app, except for messaging apps.

Autobrightness, when enabled, will take 2-4 seconds to adjust the brightness... so you feel its underbrightened...you can disable it and keep brightness maximum, then it will surely decrease the battery life
OP - also make sure you are not holding the phone by the ambient light sensor when the auto brightness is not bright enough for you.
As far as I know "Auto adjust screen power" will limit the maximum available brightness, so you might try to turn it off.
Do you know if the option to save energy for the screen actually saves energy?

One of the sensors to the left from the ear piece. If you grab the phone with your fingers on top and bottom, like in landscape mode, you can easily cover the sensor. Also some thick cases can cast shadow in the area of the sensor and throw off the autobrightness.
But yes, also make sure you have power saving mode off.
ok thanks to you all, i'll try turning down power saving..i'll let you know!
I'm glad I came across this tread as I noticed this too on my phone and started thinking it was a bug. I definitely am not covering the sensor and even placed the phone in direct sun light. I'll try turning the power saving off and see how it affects battery life and the brightness.

Power Saving Mode has nothing to do with brightness unless someone manually modify it.

Brightness reduced when some apps launched

With auto-brightness turned off an brightness turned up all the way, I am seeing the brightness go down when some apps are launched and turn back up when the app is closed. I noticed this today when launching GoChat and then also saw it when launching the stock jellybean web browser. I am not sure but I think this has only been happening since the last software update (T-Mobile USA).
I wonder if others are noticing this and if it is occurring on I9505 models or just T-Mobile models.

And auto adapt screen tone must be off

From DisplayMate:
Since the display often uses 50 percent or more of the total Smartphone power, various display power management schemes are frequently used. The Galaxy S4 uses one innovative approach to overcome this – when Automatic Brightness is turned on, the Peak Brightness becomes significantly brighter in high ambient lighting than is possible with Manual Brightness, up to as high as 475 cd/m2, which is 34 percent higher than is possible with Manual Brightness. This is done so that users can’t permanently set the brightness to very high values, which would run down the battery quickly. From Samsung:
Samsung Adapt Display: The Galaxy S4 "learns" what you are viewing and adjusts the display's brightness accordingly. If the phone senses you are reading an article, for example, it will illuminate from a more muted brightness.

power saving mode = off
auto brightness = off
auto adjust screen tone = off
still the same problem.
I see the thread talking about 33% briteness reduced during web browsing, but this shouldn't be if all brightness reducing settings are off.
And it certainly should be with other apps. My texting app has a dark theme where background = black and text = blue. When this 'feature' reduces my screen brightness when I launch that messaging app with the dark them, it becomes difficult to read.
So they are trying to save us from ourselves... and save their battery bragging rights... but PLEASE SAMSUNG, give us options to turn all this crap off!!
So... maybe I'll have to root and reROM. Just don't want a ROM with more issues than I already have with stock ROM. I hear other ROMs aren't so good with our camera.
I have the same annoying problem.First the wifi issue which we don't know if it is hardware or software, then this,i am wanter what's next..

No sir, Not always! Sitting here in a bright office with white walls, filled with sunlight and fluorescent light, with auto-brightness off and brightness turned up all the way, turning ON auto brightness reduces the screen brightness by quite a noticeable bit.
I've read this stated a few places that auto-brightness can actually push the brightness up higher than is possible with manual brightness, but under what conditions? It would make sense that auto would select the brightest possibility under direct sunlight conditions, but I just tested it outside under direct 11am sunlight, toggling back and forth between auto and manual (turned all the way up) -- no difference! Auto brightness did not make my screen brighter than is possible with manual brightness turned up all the way.
All.... as posted in another thread, this only appears to be a problem when launching the browser. My problem with GoSms chat was remedied when I toggled back to 'normal mode' (from it being accidentally set to 'night mode' at some point -- oops! why would an app have its own brightness setting? this should only be a global variable).

Notification LED dimmer after the APD1 update ?

Has anyone noticed this ? After the APD1 update, the notification LED is quite a bit dimmer. I tried upping the screen brightness, thinking that it may obey the screen brightness settings. No luck. This really pisses me off, since I rely on that LED, given that the AOD feature does not display most notifications.
dude did the auto-restart issue solved under the new firmware ?
Same for me, notification light definitely dimmer, a shame there seems to be no apparent settings to adjust this.
I didn't notice that. What kind of led color is dimmer?

My LED doesn't appear to be dimmer after the APD1 update, though I've really only seen blue so far.

Good question and idea. It's the green color. I will switch to other colors if those are not dim, maybe red.

The green LED just got activated on my phone. I think it's just as bright as it was before the APD1 update.

Just did a test again: the LED now obeys the ambient light sensor, in bright light it is bright, and in low light it becomes dimmer (you can try by covering the sensor). Same with the AOD, as someone reported in another thread.

Under sun light the led is barely visible. Violet color in this case.

I have the "dimmed green led" issue too. APD1 here. Interestingly the first couple of activities after a full reboot for the green color are bright, then it dims... I thought of a faulty led at first but now I know I'm not alone.

Adjustment is not based upon screen brightness, which could lead to errors as screen brightness is only refreshed with phone unlocked. If you receive a notification and there's light falling directly on the ambient sensor while screen is off you'll see a bright led. If you cover the sensor (with screen off) you'll see a dimmed led. It is worthy to note that this adjustment is made only at notification arrival and not after. So if you have the phone inside a pocket you'll always see a dimmed led even if you take out the phone in the sunshine. If you have the phone out in the sunshine when notification arrives then you'll see a bright led.
I have thoroughly tested this and it's how the system now works (at least on my phone).

Confirmed its controlled via Light, so rules apply the same as OLED / Always on Display
As for the battery life, to when did you update?
People have complained about battery life, But i am yet to experience this issue everyone else is.
With that in mind, Linux is a rather complex system, and has some cleaver memory management utility's
(it does not operate like windows, Close down your apps to free up RAM, Linux does this on its own)
So keep that in mind, Then you performed a update, This no doubt a few settings to the kernel have been changed, Or even a update / patch.
So any information its retained about applications, Ram and process memory will / SHOULD be ereased and re-done
and the behaviour of the kernel is different.
As a result of this, you will notice a increase in battery drain for the first few days.
You can apply this same logic and method to Flashing Custom ROMS.
You have a Version of a customer ROM (For this example V1.0)
The developer releases V1.1 With some very minor adjustments
To ensure the running of the ROM, you wipe the device and start from Fresh.
WOW after installing this ROM am getting MASSIVE battery drain
(But give it 2 days or so and you will notice it will settle)
(After the Kernel has collected enough information about running process, whats needed whats not, what you keep opening and closes, What is needed to suspend and keep active)
The list goes on.

Different phones have different mappings between the brightness slider and actual brightness, mapping is not linear. Compare the "high" positions with the "auto" unchecked.

cm12.1 live display not working properly

Hi, i have installed cm12.1 in my s3 neo but the option of live display is not working after lock & unlock the device...
Well it doesn't work as it should but it mostly is working. The litle devil have the will of its own so that it sometimes won't do what you told him but eventually it will work including the switch between day and night mode.
For the reference recommendation is to switch it off.
Right, but when i compare s3 neo with other device it looks like s3 neo has radish display not clear white like other phones
On my S3 neo live display doesn't work at all in automatic mode, and I have to set it manually. Furthermore, the minimum level of brightness is too high for my wife's standard sleep level, so I had to install a third-party app
Currently mine disables LiveDisplay every time the screen is turned off. And Automatic doesn't work at all.

Try this script for Automate. It makes it so that LiveDisplay is disabled and then put on auto every time you turn the screen on.
