I used to be able to do this on my tmo m8, but don't have an option with this phone. Don't know if it's Sprint or Marshmallow, but it's extremely annoying!
I have a contact called spam which houses all of my telemarketing and other annoying callers and would like to configure it to just send those to voicemail. Is this not possible at all now? And if not, wtf?

Thanks, but that only works for the number. I have something like 30 numbers in that contact at least! I should be able to just block that contact entirely.

Is that a sprint or marshmallow thing? Well, now that I think of it, my old phone was rooted and I was running roms on them. So perhaps it was something was always built into the roms I was using. Still, seems like a really simple, yet effective feature. Don't understand why sprint or google doesn't include that feature.
Not sure but I've been with Sprint for 9 years, and been like that as long as I can remember

I use Extreme call blocker & it works wonders. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greythinker.punchback
I use to use root call blocker on my M9 which was amazing till the mm update which broke it.
However this app is just as good and no root required. Doesn't affect battery life and it just does it's job and stays out of the way. It's not free but that's a good thing in my eyes, no ads and support got back to me lightning quick if you have an issue but I can confirm it works wonderful on this phone. There is a slight delay when a junk call comes in so phone might go off for a second but I'm guessing this is due to no root access but it's still pretty quick and will keep your call logs clean. Mine is setup to block all calls unless you are in my contacts and other calls get sent to voicemail so if it's important they can leave a message.

Thanks! It appears they do have a free version of this that blocks the calls, but not the text messages. I never had a problem with the texts, just the calls, so this could be perfect! I installed it last night and now I'm kinda hoping for another spam call soon so I can see it in action. Thanks again!

Yea I just bought the paid version right away, I like to support great devs anyway. I shut off SMS blocking, could be something I use in the future. Yea you can see the phone light up when a spam call comes in. Mainly I like it for keeping my logs clean and not bothering me for numbers I don't want to talk to which is everyone not in my contact list.

Personally I hate that option. For me there have always been unintended consequences.

Yeah, I have a contact called spam and in the past I've been able to set it to go directly to voicemail. I guess that was a feature of the ROMs I was using. Yet another reason to need root on this phone!!

I'm running Android 2.3.4 or gingerbread whatever.. I used to use a app called "Blacklist", it would send unk number's or any number not in my contacts directly to voicemail with no notifications... samething with text. It isn't compatible with gingerbread for reason's unkown.. is anyone using this version of android and have a program that is similar/compatible? Thanks in advance
ChompSMS, Handcent, GoSMS all have blacklisting for text. Not sure about calling.
Thanks, I know Chomp, Handcent etc.. are text apps though... I need something to block random #s from texting me... Kinda like when you're married but give your number to a girl, she calls you, you guys hook and she keeps bugging you type of blocking text

I wish these would work for my situation. I want unknown callers to be blocked and no voicemails from them cause i have some company leaving me automated messages once every 2-4 weeks, but i do also have people that i know call from numbers not currently in my phonebook. And the number changes each time too. I wish the donotcall list would work for these idiots.

If you get the number they are calling you from you can file a formal complaint which will get the harassing companies fined for their actions. I once caused a 10,000 USD fine to fall upon Dish Network for their actions .

Try the app I mentioned. The reason is, it rejects calls and you can control how it proceeds. It can send the calls to VM or block completely.
And I have GV as well, that is the # I basically use for unwanted calls.
Blacklist by Ming software does both call and and blocking. Works great.

Well it says the root call blocker has to have a rooted phone and its done at the system level, phone doesnt ring and hangup or send to voicmail. Just doesnt let the number connect. I might just give it a try even thou I did pay for my blocker I have now.
You knwo you can always ask me directly right? Its the best blocker of them all, that i guarantee. Also, theres a massive thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13213850
Hey! I'm a paid user of Root Call Blocker. Definitely recommend it. I'm using it to block calls and one the features just drops the call as if it never connected. The other person doesn't know what's going on. Definitely a MUST APP.

I second this. The only limitation I've noticed is that you can't block texts that come via google voice. I contacted the developer about it and he was quick to reply and explain how it is not possible at this point. Great app, money well spent!

Just bought it. Been looking for one that blocks at the system level. I remember years ago when 'dumb' phones blocked calls (no pickup/hangup or other crap) and thought it was pretty stupid that 'smart' phones couldn't do that.

I know. I found your app because of your thread in the Android Dev and Hacking Apps and Games forum. I still love the app and consider it a must have. I was also quite impressed with your quick and informative reply's to my emails. Great app and customer service. The app saves me from dealing with nonsense I shouldn't have to. Please, keep up the great work!!
Aww, thanks guys!
Your app looks like top notch work....I have not purchased yet but plan to. The app you are trying to resemble (Magicall) is a legendary windows mobile app....and i miss it dearly. It wasnt till Extreme Call Blocker Invisible that i saw an app that could compete with magicall. The ECB Invisible app does everything except:
-provide a private conversation style sms box...keyword conversation style -it is unable to have led-only notification for blocked calls......the lcon has to show for some reason. -and most importantly the app cannot block or mute a call whereas the caller hears the phone ringing but it doesnt ring your phone OR activate the incoming call screen.
I was wondering if your app can do any of the things that ECB cannot do?
Also wondering if your app can do one more extremely important thing that ECB can do which is hide the app icon(like the invisible version of ECB). And open the app by dialing your password on the phone pad like your making a call....hit send on the password and have have the app open up.
If your could successfully accomplish all 5 of these things on a rooted android 2.3 device w/ custom kernel.....I WILL PERSONALLY PAY YOU $200 US VIA PAYPAL. THIS IS NOT BULL****....I AM IN SEARCH OF THE ULTIMATE CALL BLOCKER PROGRAM.

You must have a ton of enemies, cheat on your girlfriend, or something to need it that bad. Not trying to judge but that just seems a bit much for someone just needing to block a couple ex's, telemarketers, or collection calls.

We already make an app that can do all these things and more. Its called Call Master, an advanced call management app for professional users. Its also on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291587
Enjoy!
Yep, the two best ones are made by the same company:
Root Call Blocker (for general use):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.rootcallblocker.beta
Call Master (for advanced users):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.blacklist
These are the only blockers that completely block everything without turning the screen on. Need to be rooted though.
So I was all excited about it, the new Hangout and today I installed it. Now let me get this straight, the SMS feature, that will just replace my native messaging app and I will be sending SMS via Hangout instead of my native app, and it will be sent normally via my carrier. I mean why on earth would one use this feature? What am I missing here? What's the point?

Right... it is weird, it is very laggy on my wife's S5, was laggy on my S5. It is laggy on a G3 I have laying around and also on my Galaxy Tab S. I have a original Moto X and on the Moto X it isn't laggy... I'll keep an eye on the development of this issue, I have 2 year warranty anyway (and never keep a phone for that long) if it turns out to be a defective device I'll replace it.

Thanks for this! I've been giving out my Google Voice number for years and the whole MMS thing has been the one thing I hated about it.
I just tested with a friend who sent me a pic and it got shifted over to email. Not ideal, but since I get email on the phone too it's a lot better than it just disappearing into cyberspace.
I haven't integrated Hangouts with Voice yet so maybe that's why it got turned into an email. I've been hesitant to integrate the two. Does anyone know how to separate them again if I try it and don't like it?

I don't know how to separate them, never tried really but the reason you got the picture on an email is because the Google voice app doesn't support pictures, even back in the day when T-Mobile and Sprint were the only two supported for MMS I think it was received as an email.
Make the jump to hangouts and it will all work fine. By the way, when you switch it to hangouts, you'll have to forward your calls again to your Verizon phone # OR you can use the hangouts app to make and receive phone calls. The calls handled by hangouts are over WiFi or data, like VOIP
