Hi.
I've searched through a LOT of posts, but only found slightly related (and for me unhelpful) comments.
I have a GT-i9505 (i9505xxuame2), and rooted/flashed it using Odin / modified_cf_root. However, although I have succsessfully installed TWRP - AND have (seemingly) been able to make a full backup to my external sdcard, I am completely unable to install CM 10.1 nightly / AOKP (both i9505 versions).
Whenever i try this (via recovery of course), it always fails, reporting it was unable to mount /system. When restarting the phone, it just 'hangs' on the splash screen. The only solution then is to restore my backup, which works fine... HOWEVER, I suspect that since it has problems with the /system folder, It might not actually have backed this up, and that restore only works because /system happens to be untouced by my attempts to flash it.
Trying various tips & tricks found here on XDA - like manually mounting /system in TWRP, reflashing in Odin etc. has not helped me. I also noticed that when entering download-mode, it states that write protection is enabled (as in this thread - which unfortunatly also did not solve my problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267107). I also tried CWM, but using this I'm unable to manually mount both /system, /sdcard AND extSdcard (or whatever extrenal memory was called... don't remember.. ) - and it of course has the same problems trying to flash either ROM.
My feeling is that my unit is not (fully) rooted, but like I said, I've been unable to find a solution. I really hope you can help, because I'd love to have CM on this delightful piece of hardware.

OMG! same issue here.. exactly, please HELP someone!!!
Format /system in recovery and then try flashing cm. It shouldn't be an issue mounting system if the partition is formated.

Please elaborate for me,
Wipe does a format of the partition, is that enough or do I need to actually to use Format in the menu, as in kill the whole internal storage?
thanks

thanks for the answer,
I hoped for that and also tried it.
No fun
I think I'll have to go for full format.
Just hope that does nothing bad >.<
Or is CWM maybe a better alternative?

Hehe I well tried that one,
no luck
interesting since 2.5.0.2 it says, unable to mount /system, and then promptly crashes
oh and the same happened in CWM
Hell XD
could I flash AOKP via odin maybe?
not like I like the idea >.<
It generally takes a few goes for the recovery to flash the rom in s4. Until someone works out what causes that bug in the recoviers you kind of just have to reboot and try again and again if necessary until it sticks.

Crap. Have same problem.
I had this problem after flashing MH8 firmware (new bootloader) with Odin.
No matter what I tried in recovery I kept getting an error saying that it failed to mount system.
I had an older version of PhilZ on my ext SD luckily, so I flashed this, rebooted recovery then I could format system and it was mounted again.
then just flashed my newer recovery back and all was good
Hi guys,
it appears I'm having similar issues to you both but after 5 hours of constantly trying to fix this I'm still stuck! I've opened a new thread and I was wondering if you might be kind enough to help me out on there please?
Here's a link to the thread - would really appreciate any help you could provide... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46082532

Hey guys, I am not new to this scene and have been running, flashing, roms since the S2. Today I ran into a major problem I cant seem to fix. I am running TWRP 2.5.0.2, always have for about 4 months with no issues. Today I did a complete Titanium Backup + recovery backup of my rom. After that I wiped for a fresh new rom install and noticed the rom I placed onto my internal storage is not there (it was def there in its own folder but through TWRP its not there). No biggie right? Just mount USB storage and put it somewhere else that TWRP can get to, but then USB wont mount on Windows now. No biggie right? Ill just restore the rom, put it in another directory, then wipe and reflash. However none of my backups are showing up when I hit restore, I had like 3 backups and everything is gone.
At this point what do I do? I tried everything to mount usb from recovery but windows wont take it (win 7). Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Nevermind guys I was able to get around it by putting the SD card from my S4 into the S2 and putting the rom files into another location. Once that was done placed it back into the S4, booted into recovery and flashed it. (phew!)

I take it back, stuck in a boot loop even after 2 fresh ODIN unroot tasks. Nothing I do gets me out of this, been a long day getting longer now
Can anyone help? Been at it for hours, I have tried everything, phone still reboots at the Samsung logo (the bluish one )
Unrooted 3 times
Launched stock recovery, wiped factory reset
wiped partition cache
removed battery
Cannot connect to Kies for Emergency restore.
Did you do an internal 'sd card'/media data wipe?
Best bet would be to Odin back to stock and start from scratch:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261573
Then from there just use casual to root and install TWRP in one easy step and you're back:

I know what I did, I was using Touchwiz and instead of doing a regular wipe I did a format and input "YES". I heard TW has major issues with this and thus screwed me up completely.
To add to my list above I tried this method and also did not work. http://androidfannetwork.com/2013/05/02/fix-your-soft-bricked-att-samsung-galaxy-s4/
Sean, I flashed from Odin like 3 times, how can I install TWRP if I cant get the phone to load up (boot loop)- Ill read up on casual. Thanks.

Did you do a factory reset in the stock recovery after Odin? That'll usually get you past the boot loop.
Should I ODIN with the RE-Partition Option?
Just Odined again and no dice. I booted into stock recovery and noticed after wiping factory I get "Can't open /efs/log/boot_cause" which pointed me to this fix someone on the Galaxy note forum said they did and it worked but I dont understand the steps, need some elaboration.

Yep did that mulitple times, also did wipe cache partition in the same stock recovery. I get to the Samsung logo where the blue halo spins around the name, then it freezes there and reboots.
Hmm, never had to mess with EFS stuff on our phones before.
Did you make a backup ever in TWRP by chance?
Sorry if you tried the stock recovery options there's not much more I'm familiar with.
The good news is since you were able to Odin and get 3e back, you are technically warrantied again and could work with AT&T to get a new phone since your phone just stopped working out of the blue one day

Try flashing using cwm. It'll probably work fine. Then you can go back to twrp. That's worked on other devices. Seems one you flash it once with cwm then twrp works from that point forward. Idk why

I tried flashing with a PIT file I found online but it fails through ODIN everytime. I tried on multiple versions of ODIN as well. I also cant seem to find readily available PIT files to test as well, (perhaps the one I used does not work). Also I did try to flash a CWM through ODIN but failed, but again there isnt anything that I have read that says "hey you can do this that way and it will work".
From what I understand I need to be rooted to install CWM or TWRP, and since I unrooted to try and fix the problem I cannot root myself through conventional methods. Everything I found online requires the phone to completely start up. (to the menu screen etc)
What stock firmware are you flashing with odin? I get firmware from sammobile.com. since you had a custom recovery I'm guessing you where on mdl firmware to start with.

I never flashed a custom recovery through Odin < I can try that though, where can I get one? Im assuming this firmware will have root with CWM or TWRP?
Ive only flashed using official Samsung firmware from sammobile.com I tried both that are available for SGH-I337 with the PIT file as well and no dice.

Hello there,
After trying a lot of solutions and hours reading threads, i decided to create this post to ask for help.
I`ve got a i9500 device and after restart it just started with a bootloop.
So, flashed stock rom + pit and nothing is working for me.
When i start stock recovery for factory reset, i have "Failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)" and i have no /EFS folder backup (I lost it).
Another thing, after flash Custom CWM i can't see any folder or file when installing zip from sdcard.
It's like I can't access sdcard anymore.
ODIN ends with no error after flash.
Please help!, tryed many solution before post this.
Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

Sorry dude,
But i can't see in any computer the Sdcard when i mount in CWM. Tried with PhilZ and Samerd CWM
It's weird, cause i've been flashing with ODIN Stock + PIT, PIT, then Stock, PIT + STOCK, Wipe factory reset from Stock Recovery and nothing worked.
Ok, so finally i made it work with Cyanogenmod 11 but now i`ve got a generic IMEI i can't restore it. If I flash any stock rom the phone don't boot.
Pls help!!
Finnaly, i get to a repair shop and fixed my problem. Thanks anyway!
I just want to share my experience after a bad flash and no way to recover.
I was still able to get to TWRP. I had flashed a Rom and it went bad. Long story short. No Loki causing boot into fastboot screen.
Tried using flash tools to restore stock with kdz. No good kept stopping at 49% because it was not the expected firmware.
The fix.
Wipe system in recovery then try again. With system wiped. The firmware matches and installs as expected.
Just wanted to share my experience. Maybe it will help someone else with the same problem.

Hi, sorry for my english , I'm french
I wanted to flash a custom rom on my LG G2 D802 .
I wanted the Paranoid Android (PA +) with 4.3 JellyBean .
So I made the
Backup
Wipe data / factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe dalvik Cache
After I
Choose zip ( custom ROM ) from sd card
Then I
Reboot System Now
And turn on my laptop, I get an error message saying
[640 ] started Fastboot Mode
[ 690] udc start ()
I realized I had to flash AOSP kernel before changing to a ROM paranoid . But my kernel is blocked and so I have to go back to the stock ROM
When I did this tutorial using lg tools , flashing stops at 49% with an error message .
I also saw that I could access the recovery mod by following this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565904(but I saw that I could not otherwise reboot my phone after it was bricking ) and therefore flash my stock Rom which I had made the backup . But I do not know if the ROM has been saved and if it remained in my files after the Wipes.
If it is not there, is that in buying a micro USB ====> HUSB adapter, I could install a stock ROM from a USB key ? Or is there a way I can put files from my computer to my laptop which has no port micro sd?
And is what I could with my kernel "blocked " ?
Thank you very much

It sounds like you have access to recovery, so you can use adb to push or pull files from your phone. Your backup should still be on your phone, as long as you didn't wipe the internal storage.
I'd suggest pulling the important photos/videos/backup/files/etc from your phone to your computer, then wiping internal storage or wipe factory reset. Then hopefully it wont get stuck at 49%, as that is what I did for my friend's D801 to allow it to go back to stock 100%.
Exactly what i keep telling people with the same issue, Just do a full wipe in cwm/twrp before restoring to stock. the problem is allot of them can't get into recovery :silly:

well, I sort of did something(i think) and its now working fine... I went to twrp.. did a factory reset. Then went for advance wipe and wiped system cache and dalvik. Then followed the same procedure. Bootloader-->radio-->Rom-->Kernel. It worked just fine. The first boot took some 15 minutes.
does the internal storage work for you? it works only on twrp for me :/
i can't see anything in file explorer and canìt restore from twrp :/ that's a big problem guys.
If you can not see your old nandroid backups
After rooting If you can not see your old nandroid backups
Via file explorers try to enable usb debuging from
dev. opt. if not worked (Recovires or SuperSU issue)
But you can see and restore your old or new backups via recovery (TWRP tested)
New recoveries and superSU may fix this issues.

I also got this message
Code:
unmount of /system failed: no such volume
followed by
Code:
unmount of /data failed: no such volume
a few minutes later. The process finished a few minutes later without any more output but I'm booting now after wiping the cache and everything seems fine.

I had the this same problem. After installing everything, I let it sit for 20 minutes and it finally showed the Android logo. After that it was stuck on a black screen. I wiped everything and repeated the install procedure again, minus the kernal, and got the same "unmount of /system failed: no such volume" while flashing the rom zip. It booted after a while and everything works except my storage is FUKT. I cant see any of my pictures, music, etc, and the only thing I see via PC is the DCIM folder which is empty. Not cool

Nothing wrong with my storage. I installed the bootloader, radio, and rom on top of my existing 4.4.4 rom by sideloading in CWM. Wiped caches and rebooted to make sure everything was working, then back to CWM to sideload the kernel. I haven't rooted yet.

Same error after using ADB to flash v2.8.1.0 TWRP, full wipe, and reinstall of everything in the correct procedure. My storage is still not working.

I always enable usb debugging, didn't help. And as far as the file transfer, it won't let me. I can only access it while in TWRP. All my files are there, its just android can't see them, and wont show under windows either. Not sure what the issue is there, I've tried everything I know of. I'll just flash CM12 that I was using before. Let me know if you figure out this problem, as I'm curious as to what is causing it (and I'm not the only one having it).

All of this was without autoroot. Don't worry about it man, I just installed my old rom. For some reason this ROM doesn't like me and spupuz's phone. Thanks for trying to help me, I appreciate your time. Let me know if someone else has the issue and you figure it out, I'm very curious as to what it might be.

I flashed this ROM this morning, and I initially had the weird can't unmount /system error. I rewiped, using twrp to ensure that /system was wiped too. Install went fine. I have a weird glitch or something on my recent apps list, though. I attached a picture. Anyone know what this is? It doesn't seem to be causing any functional problem, but it looks bad.
Edit: I cleared the cache for google now launcher, and restarted recovery and wiped my cache partition and the error went away.
