Benefits of CyanogenMod

I was wondering if someone could lay out a few of the benefits of flashing to Cyanogen versus stock (rooted). I have a lot on my phone and just wanted to see if it would be worth the time to switch and get everything setup again.
I looked around and didn't see any nice list of features/benefits that would be gained with Cyanogen.
I do love the fact that it is open source and community supported. That's fantastic.
Hope this isn't flamebait...

Stable (unless you're on a nightly)
Great codec support
Bluetooth profiles (HID being a top add)
It's the latest Android version in all its un-bloated glory
Update frequency is high
I'm sure I'm forgetting other things but its not limited to that.
I'm a Sense fan myself but CyanogenMod is worth the install. You owe it to yourself to check it out.

I ran CM7 for about a month and now am running the stock rooted OTA Gingerbread. It may just be ADW launcher but CM 7 is slow and laggy compared to stock gingersense. I like others had major issues with getting GPS stable and working. I do miss some of the mods but over all i'm happier on a sense based rom.

For me battery life. Ive tried every sense rom there is and im yet to find one with better battery life. And for me its not anywhere near slow or laggy. I dont really see myself ever going back to a sense rom, definitely not the one Sprint just pushed out.

Honestly, check it out for yourself. You don't need to lose anything, nandroid backup your current setup and install CM7. You can play around with it for a while and see if it's for you and if not you can just restore your backup. Many people on here have 2 or 3 roms backed up and switch between them. My suggestion would be to read all the links in my sig, they should answer any questions you might have.

netflix, googletalk video chat. way better keyboard. i miss a couple things about sense so i just bought launcher pro and use that for my facebook and agenda widgets. other than that sense roms are garbage to me. CM7 is great and once all the stupid little bugs get worked out it's going to be awesome.
i'd suggest flashing the roms with armon 2.3 recovery and sticking to the stable versions of cm7. i just had to start from scratch cause a nightly a while back through my phone for a loop.
give the latest stable a shot for a week and i bet you really like it.

How do you fully enable gtalk video? I can see people but people can't see me.

* CyanogenMod (advanced) settings. You can tweak it to perform just how you like it.
* Screen on/off animations
* Color rendering (to reduce screen power use)
* Regular updates
* Gingerbread well before sense roms. Even running 2.3.4 like me
* Developments are quickly included (ex: sd card read ahead value to increase read speed)
Just do a backup of your current system, flash cyanogen, play around and if you don't like it, just restore back to your original.

Well, Friday was the last draw when my sister's texts were not showing up on my phone. So, I flashed the new Sprint GB update and I am in love with my phone all over again. Even with the bloatware my phone is running silky smooth and I am experiencing no bugs. Plus for some reason my battery life has improved too. I was using Tiamat with SBC on CM7. Battery life become horrendous on CM7 and yes I did calibrate my battery.
When it's all said and done YMMV. The best way to find out is to NANDROID Backup and flash the rom yourself. You might be greeted to a whole new world of flashing greatness.

Lots of threads out there. I just followed the directions. I think now if you just flash the newest version of gapps and choose Google talk to install it'll install a properly working version. I'd read up on it tho.

I had cm7 and it got worse as time went on so I switched to decks 1.2v(based off cm7) much better and using latest tiamat sbc kernel...battery life is outstanding! And that's w out viperbiy scripts!

I've had this happen anytime I loaded something new, I've found that it can be fixed by clearing the Gmail cached and data and making it completely reload.

Nice that someone actually weighs the pro's and cons as op obviously needed. There is a lot of hating going on here at XDA, All devs should support each other, not bash each other. I know I Haven't been a member on here long, but flashing roms has been a hobby for a while, I just wasn't a full blown flashaholic. Anyway, there are a lot of roms to choose from and though I develop my own, I still flash everyone elses to enjoy the experience, and learn. Everyone has the right to believe what they will, but there is a line between a thought, and posting. If some of these people where two feet away from each other, there wouldn't be all of this garbage talk. I thought XDA was all about exactly that, giving the people a choice as to what software to run, helpful guides and tips, a community, or actually a culture, if you will. [Q] Brief discussion regarding Paranoid Android 3.1 on the Nexus 7

I looked around for a Paranoid Android catch-all or general forum and I only seem to find the threads for specific devices.
Since I'm debating whether to install PA3.1 on my N7, I thought this should be a good place to start as any.
I apologize if this thread clutters the General discussion thread.
So after watching this video of how PA3 performs on the Nexus 10;
I was really eager to install PA on my Nexus 7. Then I saw this video
and decided I could really use the collective XDA knowledge to make a more informed decision.
so here's a battery of questions.I know how entitled if sounds, but I would really appreciate any input about these questions.
Full tablet UI. I don't like the Nexus 7 stock UI in landscape with the icons on the side. I would much rather have the icons on the bottom, like the Nexus10 UI has them. Will one of the PA3.1 UI's modes enable this?
I'll pass on pie. I know it's optional, which is good because I don't really think I'll be comfortable. Actually, I've seen some videos and everybody is using the notifications on the bottom. Is this optional? I would really like to have both pull down menus remain at the top.
How's the battery life? the threads seems to praise the m-kernel in general, but I'm curious about the franco kernel and if there's any benefit over the m-kernel while on PA3.1.
Actual performance. Nexus10 with PA3.0 is blazing fast. The pinch-zoom action in the video had me drooling. Then I saw the videos of the Nexus 7 and notice it's not as fast.I know we're talking about completely different hardware, but I wanted to get a consensus. Does going from stock ROM to PA3.1 on the Nexus 7 improve performance? Apps, battery, wifi, animation smoothness, etc.
Latest "stable" version. I see that the PA3.1 thread for N7 has the "Nightly" term in the title. I'm happy to help with the Q&A process, but I would like to know on which PA3.1 version I can fall back on (even 3.0, should that be the case). Any recommendations?

Yes, the icons will remain on bottom if that is the ui you choose. It is indeed solod and fast using m-kernel. As far as franco kernel, that is something youll have to test. You can get a consensus, but different people use different options. Your experience may vary. The answer you will get repeatedly is "flash it and try it out", because that is the right answer. Nandroid in twrp or cwm, and load pa and test. Personally, I use multirom because i can test all the roms without losing my functional rom.

Hi Mate,
PA on the Nexus is the only ROM I've used for the last 4/5 months? (Its consistantly AMAZING) I've used it since PA 2.54 and its consistently updated and improving.
I too don't use the Pie, I keep the Stock UI (but this isn't the option you want, I never you landscape see)
I've never tried Franco but I've used Faux and M-Kernel.
Whilst Faux and PA is THE BUTTERIEST combo I've ever tried, I got bored and wanted to try elsewhere.
So I tried M-Kernel, I can say the M-Kernel just doesn't have that uber (sorry for that couldn't think of another word haha) smooth feeling, Faux is a god at kernels.
HOWEVER - Faux used to drain 1.4% an hour on standby, M-Kernel uses only 0.7/0.8%. So make your choice, M-Kernel, for great battery and good smoothness, or Faux with GREAT smoothness but a little less easy on the battery. However both kernels and PA make the Nexus 7 into a completely new device.

1. Yeah you can use the tablet ui like the n10 one and you can have the icons to the bottom (you just need to customize)
2. For the battery life, the Franco kernel is the one praised for its battery life. You can check the kernel comparison thread (I know it's 4.2.1). So far on a 6-8 hours standby, I lose 1-3%. Performance wise : buttery smooth. (nuff said )
3. As for stable version, I think the 3.0 stable is the one from early February but the nightlies are working no problem (just need to flash the bluetooth fix but it's no big deal.)

I'm finding the stock browser is unuseable on this rom after a few hours, constantly freezes. Anyone else getting this?

I'm doing a NAND backup right now and proceeding to flash in a few minutes (man this backup takes forever).
I'll try M-kernel, since my top priority is battery life.
Quick follow re. kernels;
can I switch kernes on the fly, ie; can I keep them both on root system and then proceed to overwrite kernels between reboots?
I can't imagine a situation where I would need additional buttery smoothness on demand, but it's always nice to have the options.
Are there any precautions I should take in terms of kernel co-existence? ie, any GAPPS I should flash, version of roms that dont play nice?

You can indeed flash kernels on the fly. Just wipe cache/dalvik. Yes, those are about right for file sizes. Bare minimum would be the ROM and gapps for whatever version of android. Then for kernel, its a good idea to flash ROM and gapps then do a boot before flashing a third party kernel.
The most current nightly of pa is really good and has Bluetooth working without a patch.
Edit: FYI you'll need an app like trickster mod to adjust kernel settings. If you go with mkernel start by setting up with metalice's recommended settings, good battery life and performance. Then adjust from there after you get comfortable.

You can keep multiple kernels in the root folder, but I wouldn't recommend you changing kernels frequently. Find one you like and stick with it. Kernel performance improves with stability i.e., multiple charge cycles. Constantly changing kernels won't get you the best performance.
And stock ROMS are light. Compared to the Sense ROM I'm using on my One X (almost 500MB), you can see how heavy skinned versions of Android really are. And that's a trimmed down Sense ROM. Can you imagine how heavy the original skin was before it was trimmed??

Try phablet (700p on system ui)... Third party launchers are great though. I use apex and would never go back to stock now lol

I looked up the options, the screen cap I shared is my current screen at 600p.
I see these options:
Under workspace, there's only phone (360p), phablet (600p) and tablet (1000p); I'm assuming you meant 600p.
I tried using 1000p, but it sends the menus to the bottom, and the drawer remains on the side.
Back when I was Stock 4.2.2 ROM I used Apex + https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.fameit.rotateUltimate Rotation Tool.
One of the main reasons I wanted to try PA was to get the same layout without the extra software.
Is this possible?

I was able to replicate what you want using apex. Not sure if it can be done on stock launcher as I've been using apex since day one of owning my n7. It's not my normal layout so not set up right, hence why it looks odd, just showing that I did get it that way.
This is in phablet mode (some apps it's 700p, system is apparently 600, sorry )
Edit: I had to adjust launcher settings to do this, not just put it in phablet mode, again don't know much of the stock launcher, check its settings to see if you can adjust them to do this. I still will always suggest apex or Nova, stock launcher sucks

Go with Nova Launcher Prime, I'd say.
As for Paranoid Android, I love it. I've been running it with the Faux Ultimate Kernel and it is insanely good.

I already owned Nova Launcher from a Google Play sale months before. I finally went with it and haven't looked back.
I'm really loving PA.
Regarding kernels, I understand now that kernels improve with use. Should I be rebooting frequently at the beginning?
Has anyone had the impression that the kernel is great and then not so much?
I almost got 12 hours of use (actual screen time) after the first few days. Now I'm getting between 8 and 10 hours at most.

Pa uses a stock aosp kernel I believe. You can see what kernel you have under system >about

Some ROMs use default JB kernel, some use a tweaked version, and some include custom kernels from the beginning. Like My One X running ICJ uses NCX kernel by default. It will be mentioned in the OP/changelog if a ROM is using a custom kernel.
Two ways you can see the kernel currently on your device:
As mentioned above, go to settings > about and see under kernel version
Or if you are using Trickster Mod, it displays your kernel in the app as well.

Okay, this is a bit of script that is a revised version of Killjoy using some input from Supremacy along with anything else shiny that I had to pick up..

All rom's are great, but for different reasons.. I would hope that the comparison doesn't diminish from the developers work, but allow for a better idea of what a rom offers.

Which is the best DPI value in your opinion? Slim for example uses very low DPI value but it is still nice. What is the advantages and the disadvantages of using low DPI?

I use the stock 240 that most custom rom's use, other than issues with apps in the Playstore, I see no advantage nor disadvantage to dpi. It is helpful to lower it if you like having dual panels, but I like to be able to read the already small text on my screen and with my aging eyes there is no need to make it smaller..

Truth #1: Custom ROM performance, stability, and overall smoothness are highly dependent on how a person prefers to use his particular device on a day-to-day basis.
Truth #2: The stability of a Custom ROM is entirely based on how a person uses the rom's features & system apps, and what kind of 3rd party apps s/he installs and uses the most. Apps found in the google playstore are mainly optimized for Official Android ROM's stability.
To further give users basis on how you do your rom reviews/guides:

2. How old is your device?
3. What apps do you use most often? (including system apps)

Phew, you made a list..
1. I let Google auto-update my rom(s) with my 100+ apps (too many to list)
2. My device is roughly 2 yrs old (but don't tell it how old it is, it's sensitive)
3. I use FB, Gmail, Yahoo, XDA, Youtube, ect... Some minor games and french lessons (as I should be practicing that instead of this... lol)
4. I use all of them to test, but I don't use most of them as daily drivers as I have no use in some of the features..
5. I think that certain features like Xposed framework and PA settings rob performance and are unstable.. I also don't like to run overclocked. Some rom's/ kernels can handle these features, but I find them pointless.
6. Two battery cycles.. The first is to install/test if it will be buggy, the other is to see how well it holds up to my normal day to day..
And I admit that my reviews are based on one phone (as all phones can vary) and personal usage that is subject to bias and change..

SlimBean 3.1, HellyBean, CM 10 (which you already have), and other popular ones. Particularly because I am trying to find a good 4.1.2 ROM that is smooth and has great battery life. Currently on Slimbean with marmite, and I'm not liking the battery life (Usually get around 20% screen time usage which is on for 1-1.5 hours only)
Edit: SlimBean 3.1 - it is PACKED with features, 10/10 on that (I have everything I could possibly want). Performance is really great too, little lag sometimes only. The only downside is the battery life as I stated above.

just to say that with my device and with my user experience on the roms you've tested: i agree with a lot of what you say in your rom guide!

I ran Hellybean 4.1.2 for about two weeks and it was great, I did change kernels on it and increased battery life immensely.. Have you tried the newest Marmite with your Slim rom, it should be compatible and would help your battery life.. Also try Greenify and hibernate all your apps minus the launcher and greenify itself.. you will see an improvement.. I also would suggest to limit the apps that want to auto sync and shut down google maps unless you are using it..

its very useful to people new to a certain device and to those like me who dont have the time to test all roms available.
i have tested slim and thinkbridge extensively and gamerz, cm, xylon only for short time. settled with slim because it had best battery life in my device and was devoid of unnecessary stuff i wouldnt use.
i think you can expand your comparison to include some prominent/differentiating/special feature of each rom. it would be easier for the readers to get better idea about which rom would fit his/hers needs. for example, i like slim because,
1. i like the "dark slim"
2. it doesnt have all the wall papers or live wall papers that i wouldnt have used anyway, thus, freeing more memory.

Besides, every ROM have different things, and depends on the users to catch'em all! (Wild Pokémon theme song suddently appears)

I think that you'll have to compromise on battery and performance with this phone. It's hard to have both performing well. I will only run stock based roms because they offer the best compromise. Lexodus rom with Stellar kernel along with Xposed and Greenify gave me the best all around. Lexodus and Stellar alone made the phone scream but did hurt the battery performance a little.

I find Minimal OS very stable and smooth. I have been using it around 20 days and observed no FCs as of yet. Battery backup is very good. In addition, I manually set CPU governors to improve the backup. I don't play much of games, but Hay day runs very smooth on this ROM, just the way it runs on stock. Talking about customizations, this ROM supports Layers, hence you can download the Layers themes from play store and customize the ROM.

i have used this rom for few days its good for minimum use.
but i am using two rom in my device using multirom twrp by Luk1337 and on my internal rom am using Blisspop by vatsal becos its has much more option for customization and on 2nd rom am using official cyangenmod rom by Luk1337 with minimum tk gapps.

Cm 12.1 its good in features & battery and almost stable

Yes I'm also using that one and I like it so far. Haven't tried any other than stock rom though. It got all the additions I need to be happy. Except vibration adjustments.
Ps.: When I change dpi setting to a lower dpi, the font and everything gets smaller. Which confuses my brain . I mean, shouldnt lower dpi mean lower resolution therefore bigger font etc.?

320 is too big 240 is best

You could try sokp, its a very stable rom with tons of features and customisation options while stille being smooth. Battery backup is not the best but i get through my day with regular use. Since its aosp you can flash custom kernels made for cm12.1 and aosp. But in my experience it slowed my device down so yeah... Atm it has no xposed compatebility because it has an heavily customized ART, plus its based on android 5.1.1r10 i believe. Extra features are multi window and slim recents and a lot more. I'm realy pleased with it but it may or may not be for you .

I agree with you concerning this ROM overall. I used it for a couple of weeks and was very impressed with it. Compared to a half dozen other ROM'S I have tried it won hands down. However, I ran into a glitch with a critical app upon which I rely for my job and unfortunately I had to go back to AOSP. I doubt that the problem will be resolved since the app is a very specialized app that most users on this site won't ever use.
Given that, I am extremely happy with 5.1.1 AOSP and would give it my number 1 rating. It is stable, smooth, responsive and the battery life a fairly decent.. And ALL of my apps work well with it.

Sure! It's Jobulator, which is a substitute teacher job assignment app. I sub-teach in the local school district and all potential jobs come through that app. It is set to a given interval (by the user) to check for new jobs that teachers have posted. When a job is listed it will give an alert notification and (ideally) I can then accept or reject the job. However with Minimal OS I would get the alarm but only a blank screen, (no "accept/reject" buttons). It took a while to show up since the first two weeks of school I was able to accept on my tablet and desktop (strictly by luck). But in several instances I was away from home. Consequently I was unable to accept some jobs before another sub grabbed them. So I went back to AOSP-luk and have had no issues.
In all honesty, I have never been dissatisfied with AOSP but the fact that Minimal has less bloat appealed to me so I tried it out. I see no difference in performance, battery life or stability with either ROM, just the issue mentioned above makes AOSP the winner for me.

Stock 5.0.2 debolated with xposed. or BlissPOP v4.0

Infinitive OS, excellent performance. Nice battery backup( 2 days of normal use, 4:30 hr of SOT, half WiFi, half 3g, it also sleeps like a baby). Only one bug, sometimes you can't wake up the phone with the block key, not a problem if you choose to wake it up with volume keys and after that block key works again. It just happens randomly.

I tried bliss pop 2-3 weeks ago and it had lots of bugs, I faced frequent FCs under settings, while viewing as well as modifying settings. Also I found battery life pretty average hence I moved away from it.

I also tried Resurrection Remix. It is loaded with tons of features and customizations. It runs good but I faced some minor glitches randomly, so I would say not as smooth as Cyanogenmod or AOSP. Battery performance is better than stock, close to cyanogenmod, but not as good as AOSP. Plus, on my personal view, I feel that lots of customizations kind of ruined the overall look for the ROM. You can't get the look of stock Android on this ROM. There and bold and italic fonts are used in the ROM which hampers the overall look and visual experience, but this is actually no problem as this ROM supports Cyanogenmod theme engine. Why I switched back to KK

Hi..after a month using LP and MM, i went back to Kitkat. Here's my review. Btw i think MM is worse than LP in many aspect, so I just want to review LP.
LP Rom :
1. Camera seems to be noisier a bit (maybe)
2. Dragging notif bar is painful. Sometimes lags. Reaching the quick settings is painful (double drag). I know that we can use two finger drag, but usually lags, and takes a lot of effort.
3. Animation is slow, thus slowing down my performance when using the phone. When we adjust the animation speed, it looks ugly because it comes from bottom.
4. Phone heats more. For example, watching Youtube for 15 minutes caused heat around 55-60C in LP, while in KK is really normal (around 40-45C). For many other activities, KK never reach a hot temperature that caused not comfortable to hold.
5. BATTERY LIFE! I usually get 40% after the whole day (KK), while in LP usually 20-25%. This is really noticeable.
6. Restarting phone is a pain, took a long time in LP
7. Many problem with Xposed. Usually, when a module conflicts with the other, it bootloops. For example, the same "center clock in status bar" setting in GravityBox and Serajr Xperia caused bootloop. Whereas in KK, never had bootloop with xposed.
8. Stupid setting app layout, too big spaces
9. Stupid recent apps layout, ugly as hell, and difficult to reach previous apps
10. Apps more often got closed, maybe because of LP need more RAM. For example, Whatsapp, many times, notifications come late. I even already set Whatsapp priority to foreground (using AppSettings xposed), but still same.
Who to blame? Sony or Google, for providing a bad OS?

I pretty much agree with everything you've outlined. I just wish KK had a good camera mod.

You should be blamed not the vendors. I get with LP and MM 6 hours screen on time, never have lags and the phone is cool in any situation. So the mistake is on you because you can't configure youre system right. I have Root and Xposed and never had a bootloop everything works fine.

Kitkat was the last good Android build, after Jelly Bean 4.1.2. L was a piece of fancy "Material designed" crap, for M they just smeared it around a bit.

I have to diagree. I've tried LP in many different phones, (of course i mean the old models, phones that doesn't come initially with LP). LG g2, g3, sony z3, samsung A5, S4.
I've found quite similar problems.
I don't think that i missed something. I eliminated all wakelock problems.
Maybe LP is not well optimized for these old models.

Though I haven't had any of the lag issues you've experienced, nor has my camera quality changed, but I agree that KitKat is the over-all better OS version. It had better battery life, a less cartoon-like UI, and seemed to play more nicely with Xposed modules.
Do you have a review for MM that you can share as well? I haven't upgraded to MM yet because of all the bugs I see listed in the Bug thread. I remember when LP was first released, it took a couple of smaller updates a few months later to finally get it working smoothly. I assume MM will have to go through the same bug-fixing process as well before I'd be willing to upgrade. By then, I may just jump straight to N, (or back to KK if it sucks too).

Flash it using flashtool http://www.flashtool.net/index.php using flashmode.
Open flashtool, choose flashmode, pick the ftf file, turn off the device, hold volume down, connect it to PC.

Well it depends on how you use your phone and how heavy task its being taken. I don't find any issues right now with my MM as i'm using a custom rom right now (see my signature). It's a really good ROM IMO and its always updated. Although i'm having a problem right now with my navbar as its hard to tap the soft keys, but by the help of gravity box i fixed it by raising the navbar's height.
You should consider always that not every phone can cope up whatever you are doing. If you haven't tried the ROM that i'm using right now, give it a chance and let me know if MM is still sucks.

Since this is XDA, we all assume that any problems with the stock ROM can be fixed by rooting and custom ROMs. But I don't believe that is the point of this thread. The OP is comparing the stock Sony ROMs from KK, LP, and MM and has concluded that the KK version offers the best combination of stability and performance.

I loved the KK UI.... so elegant!

I have had no problems on MM nor on LP! Everything was rock solid! Running SLiMM 2.5 right now and it is amazing! Very fast and amazing battery(about 5h SoT) and I am a power user so very amazing!
And never had problems with Xposed modules before,but one day I will give KitKat a shot to see if it really is a massive difference.

Of course. I use this phone heavily. I don't play any games but at least 4 full hours of the SOT are from the Facebook App, as I was really bored this day I watch many youtube videos, use facebook really really often and write messages with whatsapp, read news etc. I use this phone really much.

My Rom is SliMM Rom 2.4 with Android 6.0.1. My phone is rooted and I use Greenify. No Stamina mode enabled (it activates itself at last 20% of battery (screenshot)). There is a gap in the battery usage graphic because I shutted down my phone at night. But I lose maximum 1-2% per night and 2% just if it's a bad day
So please do not blame Marshmallow you see I got easily 6 hours SOT and have 16% left. With other usage pattern than mine there are maybe 7-8 hours possbile.

Custom ROMs are not a proper comparison, but thanks for your feedback.

You're right, they are not, but it is still a stock based ROM, which is further optimized for a better usage experience.
These are my best on LP (Slim LP) up to date, and you can see the average figures down below. KK could beat this with less tweaking surely, but it still wouldn't be bare stock ROM.
My point is that people shouldn't be afraid of using customised stock ROM, why is that bad? On the contrary, it's good.

I love ROMs and all the goodies that come with root access; however, this thread is just comparing stock ROMs. The added variables that come with custom ROMs makes it impossible to compare performance and bugs between KK, LP, and MM.
