Any way to cast video files from my Windows 10 laptop? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This method is supposed to work for Chromecast:
http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/stream-windows-10-google-chromecast
Unfortunately it doesn't work for me with the Shield, has anyone else had any luck?
There are some chrome extensions for this, but they all seem to render the video in a tab and then re-encode it before transmission, resulting in horrible quality. Dragging and dropping the video files into Stremio or Popcorn Time sometimes allows me to cast them. But that is neither clean nor reliable.

Download AirPlay

If all else fails, you could try going the other way - playing videos on your Shield from a Windows share or Plex server.

I've come up with an okay solution. If I install Kodi on the Shield and enable UPnP then I can cast natively from Windows, but only if Kodi is already running. It's not 100% reliable but it's better than what I had and it doesn't require any "hacks", just an install from the Play Store.

You can cast straight out of the Chrome browser if your video will play in it.

Thanks, this works great for .mp4, unfortunately .mkv and .avi aren't supported.

Using Plex is a good option, but Chrome's cast also has an (experimental) option to cast your screen. Click the little down arrow on the top right of the cast menu.

[Q] video and DLNA/UPNP

Im kind of let down by the lack of video support. I have RockPlayer and MoboPlayer and Ive tried every UPNP app in the market. Music works great, no problems there, but video support is hit or miss (usually miss). I cant really put HD videos onto a 16GB ssd can I?
And whats the point of Flash if half the sites give me a "device not supported" warning? I may as well be browsing on my PS3.
Anyone have any suggestions? Ive used 2player, upnplayer, skifta, andromote and nothing works consistently
You can use the mynet application. It does upnp streaming.

I still have no idea how to stream videos or ebooks on this thing. Can someone write a small dummy's guide please.
here it's also a conundrum
I've read on e few places they use the MyNet from asus to view the movies
but on my Tf it only shows the music found on my upNp device no Photo's or vids...(even on the photo tab it's showing my music)
It's running on a WD myBook and that is running TwonkyServer, if I browse to it via a file explorer the file gets copied/cached so no streaming ...
So is the twonky to blame or the TF....

I put my video on a 32GB microsd. If you are trying to watch HD content that has issues fitting in 16GB then the bitrate is going to be too high to play anyway. Please remember that not long ago a 3ghz Pentium4 was having issues playing h.264 high profile well, this is the order of magnitude of the work we're expecting the Tegra2 GPU to do.
Since 3.1 I grab HD content from iPlayer and it generally weighs in at 800mb per hour, at that rate I can fill my Transformer with ~30hrs of video and still have plenty of space for music. I leave all the internal storage for apps and cache.

I have never seen such a warning, I assume you're trying to use the locked-down US video sites like Hulu? Blame them,, they are choosing to lock out your device.

Would you mind sharing how you do this? Are you using the iPlayer desktop Windpows program and stripping out the DRM or are you using some other method to watch iPlayer downloads on your TF? The iPlayer Android App doesn't work well with Honeycomb and I'd love to be able to watch BBC programmes offline while I'm away from home.
Thanks!
watch videos : mobo/rockplayer + upnplay rocks.
For anyone struggling with the rubbish Mynet app and similar streaming solutions, I can recommend Plex (http://www.plexapp.com/)
The Media Server is free and built on XBMC tech, so managed media flawlessly, and the app allows you to stream video/ music from your home computer to anywhere you like. Even works without stutter with HD MKVs.

plex works very well...and it has impressed many of my friends.
I will check out Plex I guess. I know Im whining but Ive got a 2TB HDD that I keep my media on and transferring over every half gig HD video is foreign to me - my wifes windows laptop and my ps3 gladly stream it. Mynet works fine for music but doesnt work at all for most videos.
Yes, I was trying to get into NBc.com and hulu, but really, why do I have a different version of flash from windows and mac desktops? Not being able to alter my Browsers User agent string isnt helping either. I know Im just *****ing and I do appreciate al your comments. Youreright on every note, but honeycomb seems a step behind a ormal OS despite looking the same
There is a thread here on the requirements for encoding your videos for the TF. The TF cannot play RAW Bluray rips if that is what you are trying to do. Acutally no tablet will at the moment. You're only alternative is to get a transcoding streamer like VLC and VLC stream and convert, or tversity pro. I have not tried plex. The issue is that mp4 can only be streamed if the file is complete OR over RTSP/RTMP. I have used VLC but the video quality is pretty bad.
For mpeg-2(DVD) i use upnplay + Rockplayer and it works flawlessly.
I've tried the all (Plex included) and settled on upnplay + moboplayer
Based on advice in this thread, I tried Plex last night. The Plex app plays FLAC music just as well as the stock player, and the honeycomb presentation is good, they really enriched the content, although presentation is nowhere near the awesome stock music player UI feel. Video was good, although it was SD avi stuff on my network. No stuterring and no lag, very very responsive. Some odd behaviors at times, and the media scan has a couple of issues. They are supporting it though.
I uninstalled Mobo, Rock and UPnPlay, and shutdown Windows media connect service on my Atom-based W2K3 home server, and removed the Asus MyNet widget. UPNPlay and DLNA are great concepts, but the Asus implementation only supports what Mirosoft supports (meaning no FLAC). Google music will transcode my FLAC for storage. I got into android because of all these restrictions.
Plex did everything right, in one package, with honeycomb widescreen. Well worth my 5 bucks.

[Q] Plex or any streaming video app not working with LG G2?

Has anyone has any luck streaming video from your local media servers (PC) using the plex app or any other media streaming app. The apps load up fine but once you select your media to view its just a black screen until you close them. Worked fine on my GS3 and my IPAD. I tend to think its something to do with the app developers not prepared for the 800 processor?

Same issue here. Sorry.
I was able to get media to play by syncing it to be offline, both with this and with Subsonic. But streaming just doesn't work.
Plex works fine for me, remotely or locally up to and including at 1080p. I have the newest PlexPass versions on server and phone.

Same thing. Black screen, no video or audio (I don't think). Any solutions?
Plex is aware of the issue.
Download MX player, go to settings in plex, choose "device media profile" then select "media profile" and choose "external player". Next time you play, choose MX. It should work. Plex offers this as a temporary issue until they solve the problem.

I've had nothing but problems streaming video with my LG G2 using DSub/Subsonic (utilizing MX Player Pro). Audio works pretty well but the video does not work AT ALL. I've reported this to the MX Player Google group (useless, developer does not respond) as well as the Subsonic forums. So far, no help or advanced troubleshooting has been provided. I guess I'll just hope that someday my brand new LG G2 works as flawlessly streaming video as my iPhone 4 did. :crying:

[Q] Issues Casting to Nexus Player (Starz/Showtime/Sling)

I can cast most things. But Slingbox, Showtime, and Starz are having issues casting to Nexus Player.
The other Chromecasts I have in the house work perfectly fine with these 3 apps. But casting to Nexus Player doesn't work for those apps.
Anyone else having these issues?
Edit: I am using an iPhone 6
I came to post the exact same thing! Showtime and starz both don't cast to nexus player. I tried using different frequencies on wifi and used a USB to ethernet adapter on player until I finally tried the apps to my chromecast with no issues. This is a major bummer! I also noticed that when casting HBO GO voice wasn't in sync with video. Nexus Player is definitely buggy hopefully they push out a bug squashing update soon.
ok. Well at least it's not just me. I posted on google forums as well. Maybe a google employee will see it? Hopefully they know about it.
Are you on android? Don't think it's an OS thing...
I also tried it from starzplay.com to nexus player. That doesn't work either. So I think it is a problem with nexus player casting. Some bug fix is needed.
Funny I have an app that works when casting to a nexus player but not on chromecast. Seems like there is more to the googlecast protocol than I thought. I thought the implementation would be the same on all devices.
Sent from my Nexus 5
I can add casting chrome desktop doesn't work to the Nexus Player either. I get a black screen (just like with showtime app). Again works perfectly fine with chromecast. I hope this gets resolved soon. Another thing I noticed is the HDMI-CEC. I can cast things to the player and it will turn on the player but it doesn't change input if the TV is currently on like the chromecast does.
Devices I've used with same results are Nexus 5 (lollipop), 10(kit kat), and Acer Chromebook 13.
vudu showtime anytime abc all dont work properly, yet android and windows screen mirroring and windows chrome tab casting works much better, i was able to sideload hbogo, maxgo, showtimeanytime, and vudu ....which can all be used with a mouse and keyboard combo like the logitech k400 as long as you have a microusb otg to usb hub
Netflix via Chrome wasn't working for me
I had problems last night getting Netflix to load from my OS X box running Chrome. I clicked the Cast button in Netflix and I just got the spinning/loading icon. I then went to the Chrome Cast Extension, and "no devices found" showed up. When I went to Youtube, the Chrome Cast Extension showed the device.
I haven't tried restarting browser, but just wanted to see if anyone else was having similar issues.
I am also experiencing the same issue with Slingplayer on my iPhone 6. The cast icon appears within the player of the Slingplayer app, and my Nexus Player shows up as the cast device. However, when I select the Nexus Player, I just get an endless spinning/loading icon.
Also having some casting issues!
Previously had a Chromecast and everything I had worked great with it.
With the Nexus Player though, I have two apps that don't even give me the option to cast anymore (Vudu, Disney Movies Anywhere). It is like they don't "see" the Nexus Player as a cast capable device. Every other app I have works fine (Netflix, YouTube, Flixster, Twitch, Google Play Movies, etc).
So is the Googlecast part of the Nexus Player just different enough that apps written specifically for the Chromecast don't work with it or what?

The guy who developed the Videostream app pretty much said exactly what you said. They are not exactly the same. Unfortunate because I bought the Nexus Player for it's casting feature over Wifi AC and it turns out it doesn't work for the main website I want it to work for.
Solving Google Cast to Nexus Player Issue.
HI there,
Issue: the Chrome cast app in the Google Chrome browser no longer 'finds' the Nexus Player (Windows 8.1).
Fix: 1) Unistall the Chrome cast app in the browser.
2) Navigate to your AppDate file in the Windows user folder (view, shown hidden files etc.)
3) Find and delete the Chrome Cast app data.
4) Reinstall the Chrome Cast app in the browser.
Finding the app data in step 3), above can be a chore, as it will depend on your particular Chrome browser's configuration. You may need to go to other Windows or Google forums to learn how to locate the file.
Cheers.

Nexus Player Cast useless

Hi!
I was going the get me a second Chromecast, but went for the Nexus Player instead.
This was a huge mistake. The cast function is useless. It does not work the same way as the Chromecast.
I have tested HBO Nordic, the picture gets all distorted. Then I tested CanalDigital Go (Norwegian tv distributor), here the audio is out of sync with picture.
Both these apps works great on a Chromecast. The Nexus player is up to date, have tried factory reset
Anyone with similar problems?
Being from Canada i can't test those apps unfortunately. However in my experience, casting to my Nexus Player is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than to my Chromecast. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of people have the same issue as you
I, too, can't speak about the apps OP mentioned. But like koperniczx3, I also find the Nexus Player to work MUCH better than Chromecast.
Exakt same problem with HBO Nordic on Nexus player. Distorted picture every few seconds. I so wish I had bought a second chromecast instead
Works perfekt on chromecast.
Just sideload those apps to the nexus and you wont have to cast.....or load lollirock on it and just install from the playstore

Same issue here, new start-up called "iflix" just available where I live. Able to cast to chromecast, but not available on Nexus Player. Maybe the DRM is why it won't work. Only hope is either dev fix the casting (to nexus player) , or release tv version.
I haven't noticed any major problems with casting to the Nexus Player. The only issue I can think of is that the Chromecast plugin for ES File Explorer doesn't seem to work with the Nexus Player but I've already emailed the app developer about it. Google occasionally releases software updates through Google Play to improve the casting feature on Android TV devices. If you use the Hulu app to cast from your phone or tablet to a Nexus Player with AdAway installed, this actually works surprisingly well because it even skips the video ads.

The only time I have noticed casting to work better on a Chromecast is with casting a screen. The apps I use either work the same, or better on the Nexus Player. But sideloading and having the app on the Nexus Player is so much better than casting anyways. But some people are more technically advanced than others. You have to control these apps with a mouse but to get around that, just use Droidmote. This Nexus Player has been the staple in our living room and we love it.
I have had both a chromecast and nexus player. (currently posting this on my nexus player with a logitech k400 plus) I have found that casting works way better for me on my Nexus Player. On my chromecast it would drop off constantly, and video quality would go down so I would stop and restart the app/video to get it good again. I have had zero problems casting to my Nexus Player. I cast from my Nexus 6. Although I don't cast nearly as much as I use to being HBO GO is now fully supported and available on the App Store. That was the main thing I casted. I still cast Fox Now, Watch ABC, NBC, CBS and FX Now. I never have any issues. It sounds like a problem more so related to the apps you are casting.

This indicates that the TV is not getting and decoding the DoVi layer. In order to get DoVi to work on many TVs you have to switch HDMI format from standard to enhanced. I don't think that this applies to the TVs internal apps and OS but it might be good to look for something like that.
Have you set dynamic range to adaptive under fireOS settings? Is this happening in multiple apps?
This TV has VERY limited settings

Ah ok, yeah I was wondering if you were talking about commercial apps or video players.
A lot of video players don't support DoVi. I don't think Nova Player does:

I haven't had any major problems playing DoVi in Plex. The one problem I have noticed is that DoVi files using an .MP4 containers don't play without a lot of buffering. Remuxing to MKV (MKVtoolnix) makes them play fine.
So the good news is it isn't you, it's your app.

I would see if you can install the Plex server on the DLink NAS and then run the Plex client on the FireTV. This will give you the most pleasant and lightweight interface.
You will have to see if it's possible to install.

If you haven't sideloaded apps on your FireTV yet, Kodi might have a steep learning curve. You are going to need to do some googling.
