Trying to access some apps, I get "screen overlay detected, go to settings to disable." Apparently, you can't have anything on that draws over other apps, such as lux, fb messenger, etc. I just want to be able to use my phone. Bad enough that I can't root it to remove the warning. Anyone have any suggestions?
That's an android built in security feature, for 6.0+

You can, just pause Lux, then install or change whatever you need then turn Lux back on and you are set.

i google'd this but can't find anything on it and was wondering if the s3 is the first phone that allows users to disable at&t services without root. this is my first android device so i wouldn't know if that's true...
anyway, i have hotspots, navigator, messages, and updater. Carat is saying updater uses a lot of my battery, but that is the only one i can't disable in the application management menu in settings. however, i assume if i disable the other 3 then updater will have nothing to update and will consume less battery (hopefully).
has anyone tried to disable these programs with success, i.e. without it causing problems to your phone?
im not sure. but i did try to uninstall one and then it just showed up that it needed a update so i ended up redownloading the app because im so OCD about having updates not done

You go into the application manager and DISABLE the app. I have gotten rid of ALL the ATT bloatware this way. Works sort of like
Titanium Backup but you do not need the root. Great option.
CC
This is actually one of the 'features' of ICS (being able to disable apps w/o needing root). It basically very similar to "freezing" apps in TiBackup if you have root. It's generally much safer than outright deleting an app since if you do find you need it you can always re-enable it.
Make sure you have "auto update" unchecked in Google play first. Go to manage apps in settings and then go to "all".
Disable the ones that you don't need which is prolly a lot. You can also hide them if you want. While in your app drawer hit the menu button and choose hide apps.

Hi,
So when I open my flip cover and have no Internet access, I get a textbox saying there is no network, check network and try again. So I guess an app is always trying to connect to Internet. But I don't know from which app this comes so I can't turn it off. Is there a log out something so I can see which app gives this textbox?

I don't know about a log, but one way to tell would be to go to Settings-connections tab- Data Usage. Any app that appears in the list uses data. Then you can look at each one and see its foreground/background usage. If the app uses background data, then it's a possible culprit.
It's not tge easiest method, but it would be a heck of a lot better than uninstalling apps one by one to find the one using data.

Sorry, I went to work today then lost this thread for a while, lol.
Like I said, it isn't the best solution, but it'll be better than uninstalling apps one at a time.
What you need to do is start at the top of the (which are apps using the most data). Tap the app and look at the amount of background data being used. If it's 0.0, then that app isn't using data in the background. If it's some other amount, it is and you can check the "Restrict Background Data" option. This will prevent the app from using background data until you unchecked that option. Then test to see if the message pops up. If so, then that app wasn't the culprit, so uncheck the background data option and go the next app in the list. Repeat.
Hint: start with the Google apps in the list. I suspect Google Services, but I could be wrong.

I found the app! It was the app that came with the flip cover. It's a led cover (smart shell for Note 4) but I still get the message. Even with the background data restricted. Can I completely make sure this app doesn't access Internet cause it really doesn't need it. When I turn off my phone or delete data for the app it doesn'tshow the message for a while.... But after a while it's back....

So I'm guessing that that's a 3rd party (non-Samsung) led cover?
I have no experience with them personally, but I've read quite a few issues with people using 3rd party LED covers. Especially when on Lollipop.
I don't really know how to restrict an app from using FOREGROUND data, so I did a quick Google search.
"If you don't have root access on the device, then you can use mobiwol to control the access various apps have to the Internet. Mobiwol creates a 'virtual' VPN connection on the device which allows control of the individual app connections. However, although the app starts when the device starts it is possible that there may be a brief period prior to Mobiwol executing in which apps could get Internet access despite the Mobiwol configuration."

" If your device is not rooted, so no problem, there are some applications that use some trick that can prevent apps from being connected to internet, such as NoRoot Firewall.
The Trick of NoRoot Firewall is that it opens a Fake VPN connection for making the phone to send all the packets to the Application then you can define for the application which one to allow and which one to deny. So it does not require root access."

I don't know how to use these apps, so I won't be able to help with getting them working for you, but you can give them a try if you want. Other than that, Android doesn't natively support restricting a specific app from using any type of data, other than simply shutting down data for the entire phone.

I found an xposed module to solve it I guess... No message so far! Xprivacy.... Works great... Off course you have to be rooted and have xposed installed.. But thanks man!!
I'm having an issue downloading anything with browser or chrome. I continuously get "disable screen overlay in settings>apps". I've read extensively about how to untick draw over apps and I've deselected them all, reboot, etc. Nothing is working. I don't have any apps that stand out to be causing the issue. I'm on unlocked bootloader, rooted A2017u B27. Any other suggestions from anyone experiencing the problem? Thanks!

Turn off Mi-Pop
Besides what @tinasdude said, I've found that if your in a Chrome/browser instance within another app, that it can trigger the overlay warning for some reason.
Things like Twilight or other non-root redshifting apps also work via overlay and would need to be disabled.
I don't have Twilight or anything else installed although I do have Xposed installed with Gravitybox, Amplify, and Greenify but I've uninstalled them all and still get the error. I also unchecked Mi-Pop but nothing

Something else is installed that is or can alter your screen's state. You can try to force close the app in question that is throwing the error and try again. Also, if you use TB, dont uninstall stuff, just freeze it and then after the function goes through that you are trying to do, you can unfreeze it.
Get this app it solves the overlay issue.

Hello out there,
anyone with an idea how to get rid of these two "functions"?
I already deactivated Game Launcher and also denied Game Tools to write over other apps, to get rid of these two additional buttons on the navigation bar. But once i start a game, it still pops up with "not able to overlay on other apps, please activate in options". And this even as i deactivated notifications for it!!
I don't want this "functions" and their notifications are not relevant for me, not at all.
But, I also do not want to root for this.
Maybe anyone knows a hint.

Did you ever work out how to hide these extra functions? I've recently set my S8 to Game Mode to help with lag I've started getting but when opening apps (non game apps) the two extra functions appear in the nav bar and I cannot find a way to disable these.
I have the same frustration. I have unchecked every option. I'm tired of the stupid notification.

I use adhell which has a package disabler. Works without root but you have to follow steps to have it installed and working. I've disabled alot of Samsung stuff including the Game tools and launcher you mentioned with no trace of it whatsoever to bother me.

This is a shot of all the apps I was able to disable on my Verizon g6. With no negative results it's truly not much but without root don't know what else could get rid of that wouldn't hurt anything
Yes I have some disabled to but Greenify just allows you to add apps that you want to use but don't want them to run in the background, like music, camera, maps, Facebook, Twitter, etc. They only run when you open them and are shut down again a minute or so after the phone goes into sleep mode when the screen turns off.

That's great but I'm not truly doing it for batter life I've been doing it for performance. Shutting the app down actually would make the phone slower I believe since when you relaunch the app it's not just pulling it from background it had to truly start all over. Just my thoughts. I never kill my background apps unless one is acting up
You want to make it snappier turn off animation scaling at dev options then turn on gpu rendering.

Yeah done that for last 5 years. Thanks. I put it at .5 and use nova launcher with faster than light seething for no annotation
