Does anyone else get low cell reception on 4g and 3g? My 4g cell is around -107dbm with 35asu with 2 bars. Would only having 2 bars drain my battery? My 3g is even worse, although my previous OPO had nearly full 3g signal.
Is this a samsung hardware problem? Saerching around on Google seems like a lot of folks had problems with cell reception on their S6 too
Thanks

I've been using USB-tethering over a 3G connection getting anywhere from 0-2 bars in my signal strength indicator at work. The battery level usually remains steady at the same level while I'm tethered.
Now, i'm in Las Vegas and USB-tethering over a 4G connection, with full signal strength. (Does signal strength fluctuate with 4G, or will the signal strength indicator always display "full" in a 4G area?) To my surprise, the battery is actually receiving a net positive charge, as my battery level has steadily increased while I'm USB-tethered.
Also, I notice the phone is cooler to the touch than when I'm USB-tethered over a 3G connection.
Obviously, all of these observations are incidental and anecdotal, but I thought I read previous posts here that 4G drains batteries faster than 3G, but I'm not seeing that being the case.
Is the 3G signal strength a factor for power consumption?
I believe there is a bug with the 3g radio that's causing a higher battery drain. Someone on here was talking about that

I can also say that I too am experiencing the same. 4g doesnt really drain battery that much more (if it is more) than 3g on my Epic. I can go 12 and a half hours with 4g on all day and normal usage...
I find the 4G battery drain consistent moderate drain. You would expect net positive charge while USB tethered as we get 500 ma charging it and no single function can use 500 ma.
4G is still a power hog, and noticeable when not charging, but you are right the amount of 3G cn be pretty bad.
As far as I can tell the 3G seems to draw massive power under poor signal conditions while the 4G doesn't change power, it just slows ,under bad conditions
I have not stringently tested it though, those are just my initial anecdotal impressions.
What I will say is my dormant overnight battery drain has done way up since the last update!
Anyone else noticing also if edge has a stronger signal, phone will drop h and go to edge? ! I have 2 bars h and my phone will change to e aka edge that has 3-4 bars...
I've installed the rocketfish toggle to force 4g, anyone else noticed same thing in their service area?!?
Aloha from Hawaii!
This only happens to me if my 4G signal gets exceptionally low, like 1 to 0 bars. Then the phone will roll back to EDGE to still maintain a signal. Otherwise at 2+ bars this does not happen to me.
Edge will almost always have a better signal than 3g. Especially because of the freq that tmo uses. They use 1.9ghz for edge compared to 2.1ghz for 3g. Higher the freq the more power needed for same distance and less penetration
Any one else notice better battery life on lte vs wifi? I'm on 4.4.2 but it has always been like this since I got 4g where I live. On my wifi at home I get about 3 hours screen on time(I even have it set to turn wifi off when screen is off) , vs on 4g I'm getting about 5 to 6 hours screen on time
On lte I get anywhere between 5 to 15Mb down(depending on time of day) and wifi I get about 17Mb down, I know that doesn't matter just saying anyways
Been testing my battery life for weeks and wasn't using wifi when testing lte and vice versa except when the screen was off it would revert to lte, before I got 4g where I am battery life was horrible on 3g. Maybe 2 hours screen on time and my gs4 would get hot
Anyways just seems odd that lte is more efficient than wifi so I don't even use wifi unless Sprint is having network problems.
Thanks for reading my crap lol

Ever since I've gotten reliable LTE at home I never turn on wifi. I only use wifi when I'm in a poor signal building. My battery has never been better since going LTE all the time.
well that baffles me
i thought LTE takes the most juice
i for one always get much longer battery use if im on wifi all day instead of LTE

maybe its based on the signal quality
I get much better battery life on wifi, lte sucks some battery! you're getting 5-6hrs screen time on lte? stock battery? most I saw was a little over 5hrs on mostly wifi

It has to do with your signal strength. A strong LTE signal is much better than a weak Wifi signal. Beyond that, the Wifi DTIM interval can theoretically have an effect on your battery life. If you have a router that allows you to change some advanced settings or are running DD-WRT or Tomato, you can try raising the DTIM interval to maybe 3 or 5m which should improve your Wifi battery life.

Stock battery, guess I got really good 4g signal where I'm at. Sucks cause I'm moving soon tho lol

Ever since they starting attaching the lte unit to the motherboard, the battery life has gotten a lot better. Though signal does effect it, battery is usually better on lte then on wifi.

Has anyone else noticed a direct correlation between average or medium cellular signal from mobile data and the battery being used a lot quicker? I can almost watch my battery drain if I do not have a full five bars of cellular signal

Yes your battery is affected by low signal greatly. The cell signal works harder to maintain a connection causing the battery drain. The lower the signal the harder the phone works to maintain that signal

That makes sense and I appreciate your reply what do you think about when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi? Would a weak cellular signal still affect the battery if the phone is connected on Wi-Fi? I should have been clearer with my question

It depends do you have wifi call enabled? If you do it wouldn't affect it as much. If you don't have it it will affect it quite a bit. The lower your reception the greater the battery drain. I know some people combat it by putting the phone into 3G; 3G usually has a broader signal compared to LTE

I do believe I have Wi-Fi calling enabled I never heard about the 3G option I'll take a look at that

I'm considering switching to ATT which requires a phone switch too. Anyway, looking to pick up as used S8 and have no ATT signal inside my house. Maybe 1 bar in some areas. In the past I would have terrible battery drain to the point of an hour of SOT with a Sony Z5C. Most battery went to cell signal. ATT stopped giving out femtocells saying Wifi calling is good enough. But... with a weak to nonexistent LTE signal, even if on great Wifi, am I going to be using up my battery searching for the LTE signal or is the S8 smart enough to no waste the battery on that? Anyone's impressions of having great wifi and no LTE on an S8 series, while using Wifi calling?
