LG G5 ALL-IN-ONE THREAD
Making a thread where I can throw random info about the G5 in one place. Will add to this as we go.
See the changelog in post #2 to keep up with what's been added.
Woo! As of April 20th this thread is now a Sticky. Not sure what the process was of making this happen but thanks to any mods involved and to all the users who 5-star'd this thread.

LGUP and LG Flash:
LGUP and LG Flash are official *internal* tools by LG used in service centers, testing labs, Carrier repair shops etc. These are for Windows only but allow for manually flashing KDZ and TOT files unlike the fully automated LG Bridge which is the only tool officially available for average consumers. LGUP flashes both KDZ and TOT files and has an easy to use interface. LG Flash Tool was patched by ieatacid but so far there have been no success stories with a TOT flashing. The suggested tool to use is LGUP. As of 2017, the suggested LGUP version to use is LGUP 1.14 along with the UPPERCUT app which allows every G5 model to work with LGUP.
LGUP Directions:
1. Download and install the following three(3) files on Windows PC:
LGUP 1.14 installer
LGUP_Lab_Frame_Ver_1_11.msi(OLD)
UPPERCUT EXE (read more about UPPERCUT here)
LG*InsertModelHere*_DLL.msi for correct G5 model [Ex: LGH850_DLL.msi](OLD)
Latest LG Windows PC drivers from the drivers section above (if not already installed)
2. Download KDZ or TOT. Need help finding KDZ? Try here.
3. Turn OFF device then place in Download Mode: Hold Volume Up while plugging in USB cable.
4. Run LGUP and flash software
Select device
Check BIN File box under File Type then select KDZ/TOT file
Check UPGRADE box. (UPPERCUT doesn't support REFURBISH*)
Check Refurbish box in center of program. (OLD)
Click START button to flash file to G5.
*Since REFURBISH can't be selected you can do a factory reset after the flash completes by booting into the stock recovery. Use only if needed.
LG Flash Directions:
LG Flash Tool has not been confirmed to work with the LG G5. LGUP is recommended for manual KDZ/TOT flashing.
To read old directions click the button below:
1. Download the repacked LG Flash installer, extract it and run the EXE installer inside to setup LG Flash.
Setup_LGFlashTool_2.0.1.6-ieatacid.zip
2. Open LG Flash (if first time installing/running LG Flash you may get a "DBMS" popup, select Korea Factory)
3. When LG Flash finally opens it should open a 2nd window, Model Config. Check the "Select Manual Mode" box.
4. Select your DLL and TOT file then hit OK.
5. To start the phone detection/flash, press the yellow arrow in the top left corner of the main LG Flash window.
6. Boot phone into Download Mode, if phone is set to COM port #41 then LG Flash will begin the flash...
if COM port is NOT set to #41 already:
open Windows Device Manager
Set the LG Serial port under "COM" section to use port #41
Unplug phone from USB cable then plug it back in
LG Flash should now see the phone and start flashing the TOT
7. LG Flash will reboot phone when finished.
As the phone starts to boot back into Android.. pull USB cable.. close LG Flash when back in Android.
DOWNLOAD LG FLASH TOOLS
KDZ/TOT/Partitions/Random Files:
As always Codefire will have stock partitions, TOTs and KDZs when they become available. My usual collection of files will be found in the Codefire link below. I also hope the community will help build up the current KDZ spreadsheet found @ http://bit.ly/lgkdzlist
Download LG G5 Files From Codefire Here

Unlocked SIM
Be sure to check the Models/Bands list above to confirm the G5 model will work with your carrier!
-Most international devices should come unlocked (H850, H860, etc..). There are some carriers that will lock the sim slot but are easily unlocked with an unlock code. You can find unlock codes online for under $10.
-Verizon's G5 comes sim unlocked out of the box.
-You can try and get AT&T to unlock your G5 for free. If they decline you can buy an unlock code online for under $10.
-T-Mobile USA unlocks OTA instead of with a code. You can try and get TMO to unlock your G5 for free. If they decline you can buy an unlock code online for around $30. This may not work in all situations. Be careful buying TMO G5 if you are expecting to use it on another carrier.
-You can try and get Sprint to unlock your G5 for free. If they decline you may have trouble unlocking. Sprint uses OTA unlocks like T-Mobile. I am not aware of any paid methods to unlock the Sprint variant.
-The "USA Unlocked" RS988 has both GSM and CDMA and is not branded to any carrier (except Sprint, unless hax...). Should work on every GSM carrier and any CDMA carrier that does not care about MEID or just works with a SIM, like Verizon. CDMA hackers should have no problem having their way with the RS988.
-Anyone have info on the US Cellular variant? Am I missing others?
Unlocked Bootloader
The European LG G5 H850 is officially bootloader unlockable as of April 20, 2016. You can read all about it here. This official unlock is only for the European H850 variant.. not the H860 or any H850 variant from outside of Europe. As of March 2017, both the EU H850 and USA RS988 are on the official bootloader unlock list.
The T-Mobile USA H830 is unlockable with "fastboot oem unlock" out of the box but LG has disabled all other fastboot commands so there was no way to flash TWRP... until May 23rd when tungkick made a custom TOT which flashed TWRP using LGUP. The original TOT was for 10A and had a qfuse version of "00" so it only works for devices on 10A. A custom 10D TOT w/TWRP was later made and worked on qfuse version "01" H830s on Marshmallow. Shortly after the release of Nougat and the LG V20 came a bug called dirtycow.. and then @jcadduono came along and made recowvery for the V20 which gives your phone a root shell to flash TWRP to the recovery partition. And since the T-Mobile G5 bootloader can also be unlocked recowvery also works on the TMO G5 and the TWRP flash actually works and you can boot into TWRP and flash SuperSu for root or flash a custom rom or any mod etc. Full proper unlock. Recowvery is now the recommended method for installing TWRP and rooting your H830. It works on software versions 10A - 20A. It has been patched in versions released after 20A. Currently it is still possible to downgrade from H830 20F to 20A.
Root
Full root with working root apps, xposed, root shell etc is currently only available for bootloader-unlocked devices (EU H850, RS988 and H830). To root the H850/RS988 follow the bootloader unlock steps shown in the section above this... then flash the SuperSU zip once in TWRP. H830 users will have to run the recowvery method mentioned in the bootloader unlock section above then flash SuperSu while in TWRP.
As of the time of this writing (June 4 2016) there is no way to root the G5s without bootloader unlock... Not kingroot.. not oneclickroot... or any of those silly youtube videos that claim otherwise. Root for these bootloader locked devices is not impossible.. just nothing released yet.
As of Dec 21, 2016... Honestly Annoying has released a guide to make use of the debug boot image from tungkick and the dirtysanta exploit for the V20 to flash the debug img to some G5 variants which gives the phone a limited ADB root shell (no apps running as root, no xposed, etc). This allows you to make some modifications to the system... edit hosts to block ads, tether mods, build.prop edits etc Also good for.. debugging of course See thread for which models and software versions are supported.
Custom Recovery
Once bootloader is unlocked you can install a custom recovery like TWRP or CM Recovery. Currently TWRP is available for the H830, H850 and RS988 variants.
H830 TWRP | H850 TWRP | RS988 TWRP
Xposed
As of Xposed version 84, "Added support for LG's encrypted apps, fixing crashes of their weather app/service."
No more having to fiddle with things to make things not crash.. this is great news. See the Xposed thread here for downloads. Thanks to @rovo89 for his continued support on Xposed. Thanks to @ryukisai for pointing out the version 84 news to me.
On May 29th an unofficial "sysemless" xposed was released... systemless xposed works like systemless root and does not touch the system partition. I'm not going to get into why someone might want to do that but you can find out why as well as read all about it here.
Adoptable SD Card Storage
Turn your external SD card into 'one big internal storage' with this mod from MoDaCo here. This is a new option supported in Android 6.0 but not featured by LG. More info on adoptable storage here. A second option requires root: simply edit build.prop value "ro.lge.adoptable_storage" and set it to "true" then reboot the phone and select Settings > Storage and USB > SD and format as internal storage.
New LG Home UX 4.0 Launcher/Enable App Drawer
By default LG has removed the app drawer normally found in Android and instead places everything on the home screens in folders. It was initially reported that the only way around this was to use a 3rd party launcher. That has since been proven untrue...
Option 1: LG has just released a new launcher APK called LGHome (UX 4.0) that has the app drawer and has a more standard feel. Definitely a better option over the "EasyHome" option. You can click right here on your phone and install the LG SmartWorld app and then search for "LG Home 4" or download the APK from Codefire here.
Option 2: To enable the app drawer open Settings > Display > Home Screen > Select Home and select "EasyHome"
How-to Boot into Recovery/Factory Reset
1. Power off the phone. Unplugging the USB cable can also help.
2. Using 2 hands.. use one hand/finger to press/hold volume down.. and use the other hand for the power button. Press n hold both buttons.
3. As soon as you see the LG logo on the screen.. let go of the power button then quickly press it again (never letting go of volume down).
4. Keep holding until you see the Factory Reset screen.
*Notes*:
A. Verizon/Sprint have been known to not require letting go of the power button.
B. On Sprint devices you may actually get the full stock recovery menu and not just the factory reset option.
C. This is the same method for getting into TWRP once bootloaders are unlocked.
If TWRP is flashed you must go through the default Factory Reset menu to load TWRP.
(unless you have a model that goes right into full recovery menu)
Dialer Codes
May not work on all models and all software versions.
Phone Information: *#*#4636#*#*
Main Hidden Menu: *#546368#*XXX# [XXX = model number.. for ex: H830 - *#546368#*830#]
Hidden Menu: 277634#*#
Disable OTAs
You may be able to just uncheck the update box under Settings > About Phone > Update Center
If you do not have this option then try the command below which should work on most devices outside USA:
Code:
adb shell "pm hide com.lge.lgdmsclient"
Owners of USA variants please let me know if you have this APK, LGDMSClient.apk, in /system/priv-app/LGDMSClient/
T-Mobile USA owners do NOT have the same APK but can use the following commands instead but... ROOT REQUIRED:
Code:
adb shell "su -c 'pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$ActiveReceiver'"
adb shell "su -c 'pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver'"
adb shell "su -c 'pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver'"
To ENABLE updates just change hide to unhide or disable to enable.
Disable APKs
Some of you may have used the "Debloater" tool previously to freeze APKs with or without root. The commands below replicate Debloater with just ADB commands. No root needed for any of the commands below.
List Package Names
Code:
adb shell "pm list packages -f"
Freeze APK
Code:
adb shell "pm hide [I]PackageNameHere[/I]"
example:
adb shell "pm hide [I]com.lge.lgdmsclient[/I]"
UnFreeze APK
Code:
adb shell "pm unhide [I]PackageNameHere[/I]"
IRC Chat
We have an IRC chat dedicated to all things LG over on Freenode, #LG-IRC. We've been building since the #lg-optimus-g days... and have merged all LG devices into one channels... #lg-g2, #lg-g-flex, #lg-g3, #lg-g4 etc are all merged into #LG-IRC. Come hang and chat about anything and everything.. including LG things of course. IRC chat is not live customer support chat for the lazy. We do like to help but please try to help yourself first.. and always search XDA and Google first. If not familiar with IRC and you do not have a client.. you can join the webchat here.
If there is a G5 WhatsApp group that rises let me know and I can link it here.

Thanks
Thank you for putting this info together. I just ordered a G5 to replace my G3. I vote for getting the thread stickied. This type of info is a lot of what I see as a big strength for XDA.
Hoping for root on the G5. One big reason I got this phone is I think it is more likely to get root than the S7 edge.
Thanks again!!!

Same on all accounts. I voted this thread 5 stars and also want to see it get stickied. Autoprime was clutch back when I had the G3 (or perhaps the Optimus G) and so I'm hoping for the same magic this time around.
H830 [T-Mobile USA]: GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 WCDMA: B1/B2/B4/B5 LTE: B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B12/B20

Where did you get this list of bands, Autoprime?
Frequencycheck.com says LTE 1/2/3/4/5/7/12/17/30
and LG.com says "LTE 2/4/5/12/29/30, Roaming 1/3/7/20, and CA"
I'm asking because I just bought an H830 on Ebay but I really need band 17 to get LTE where I live. So I'm trying to figure out which of these lists of bands is correct.
PS
Thank you for your awesome work on this phone! I can't wait to root it.

from the phone's internal configuration.. the info on LG's page is wrong.. that's AT&T's info. can't speak for freqcheck.. I assume they just copied it from somewhere and want clicks.
If you need B17 for AT&T... you might not actually need it because AT&T is opening up B17 to work with B12.. which is why even the AT&T G5 doesn't have B17 as B12 covers B17 + more.
Here's a question for this nicely built thread (Posted on Cyanogenmod thread before I found this):
I am in Canada. I have a preorder waiting on Expansys for the international version. I also have a possibility of buying a Canadian version off-contract. Do I:
•Wait for the international version
•Buy the Canadian version
•Get a T-Mobile version
Of course, my goal is to have a TWRP-enabled phone and have the best overall solution.
Thanks!
I'd just wait it out until the HTC10 comes out and see if there's a g5 solution before it can be determined whether HTC 10 is truly unlocked and rootable on your carrier.

I'd suggest only getting the Canadian version if price is an issue and the only way you can get it is through a local carriers discount.
T-Mobile USA and International EU variants have pretty much confirmed an unlock is near. So one of those should be the choice if you're looking for an unlockable phone, price isn't an issue and you don't want to wonder if a bootloader exploit will ever come.
As for Intl EU vs TMO US... in the end I think both will have near the same "dev"... it really comes down to the bands supported by each device and what you need. As you can see in the bands list above in the OP the WCDMA bands differ slightly... with TMO having WCDMA B4 (AWS) and the the Intl version having WCDMA B8... is B4 or B8 more important to you? Also the LTE bands... the Intl version has all the same LTE bands that TMO has plus some... the extra bands are B8/B17/B28/B38/B40... are any of those extra bands important to you? (AT&T users that think they need B17.... AT&T is switching to open up B12 so B12 in the TMO version should work just fine replacing B17)
Whichever phone has the bands you need could make your decision. Intl has more LTE bands but if you don't use any of the extra ones plus could make use of the WCDMA AWS band in TMO then maybe TMO is the better choice if you care about full WCDMA compatibility. If you don't want B4 WCDMA... maybe it's best to just get the Intl version... more LTE bands.. FM radio.
Only you can make the final decision.. but hopefully it's an easier decision now. :good:
thanx @autoprime!
I've rated 5 stars for this post and hope it will be sticked.
And crossing fingers for the root!!!!
Do you still need the Canadian IMEI? Just got my G5 today.
Is the minimum volume too loud for everyone else, too? I really can't leave it like that. I tried some apps to lower the volume that worked for other people on older phones but none of them worked.
P.s. also, is there any way (without third party apps) to automatically disable the always-on display during certain hours of the day? (like at night)

The media volume or the ringtone/notification volume? Even on the lowest settings, the notifications seem to be a bit loud, but I don't mind. I would however like to be able to get more volume steps for music and videos.
On the G3 I used Xposed Framework and G3 Tweaksbox to adjust the number of steps on the volume bars.

Both of them.
Btw I found how to deactivate the always-on display without going through the settings: put the device face-down. I noticed that when I took it out of my pocket the time wasn't displayed and it appeared shortly after. If the light sensor is completely blocked, the always-on display is turned off, it seems.

Yeah it's just like knock-on/dt2w on previous phones however, the only time the phone has locked up on me(requiring a battery pull) was when the always on display tried to come back on after being in my pocket. It happened a few times so I turned aod off and it hasn't happened since. Using H830(Tmo).

Hi, I followed the DirtySanta tutorial, used the US996 DeODEXed Rom. I knew this was a possibility but thought that I could get back to stock using the KDZ, unfortunately my phone is now seen as US996. I've tried modifying both the build.prop, and KDZ but I still can't get LGUP to flash back to stock. Is there anything I can do?
Service Unavailable is probably due the frequency signal issue.
Remember that Wind runs in AWS bands, while the US996 runs on regular bands (Bell, Rogers, Telus)
I'm sure the phone works fine if you use a Rogers SIM on it.
so, the trouble / solution is figuring out how to flash back the Tmobile / Wind modem back into the phone.
also set the phone to use the proper AWS bands 1700 / 2100, or the new LTE band 66

T-Mobile H918 supports LTE Band 66, try and flash a H918 ROM maybe? Or access the hidden menu and enable AWS, but you'll lose LTE and only have 4G that way.
See here to access the hidden menu but change 915 in the command to 996 or the model the phone is showing as.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/access-hidden-menu-h915-t3515098
Edit: Let me know if it works, and you get LTE back (not just 4G) I really want to know to root my H915 as well. You used the [LS997|VS995|H910|F800L] DirtySanta Bootloader unlock and Root guide by me2151, right?
Second edit: If you're going to try to flash an H918 ROM I'd strongly suggest you flash an H918 kernel that is suggested in the dirty santa thread, I think the Konverged is what people are using. No hard evidence either way flashing an H918 ROM would work but it may not as the boot image is a 996.
Thanks guys. I flashed the Konverged kernel earlier, it helped crash-wise but nothing on the signal end. Last night I extracted the files from the H91510e kdz and tried to flash the modem that was included but that hasn't helped, I want to try the CDMATool but it isn't recognising my account so I'll wait for a bit. I tried to use the hidden menu but it doesn't seem to do work on this firmware unfortunately.

Try this, make sure USB Debugging is enabled. Turn off phone. Remove the battery. Put battery back in. Hold the volume up button and plug in USB cable. It may boot into download mode or it may boot into the dirty santa corrupt screen. If it does boot into the corrupt screen , let go of up button, press the power button then IMMEDIATELY press the volume up button. Either way you should be in download mode. You want download mode, not fastboot. Make sure LGMobileDriver_WHQL_Ver_4.1.1.exe drivers are installed.
Download LG Support Tool. http://www.mylgphones.com/lg-software-tools-download the 'Download and install LGMobileSupportTool.exe' link. Install and run it. If you've already installed the drivers hit cancel when they go to install.
Then go to 'Options' 'Upgrade Recovery' Make sure you have the IMEI number from under the battery and put it in no dashes or spaces. It should download and install the firmware if you've done the tap 'About Phone' 'Developer Options' 'Enable USB Debugging' but I'm sure you know this.
If all goes well you should be back on stock firmware.
Hope it works, it should but I'm not 100% sure.
The good news is that it recognized my phone as H915, but unfortunately half way through the setup it through a weird error. Part of me is thinking of restoring my twrp backup and trying uppercut again. I'm hoping that will get the program to see my phone correctly.
EDIT: I tried the KDZ installer again, without trying to restore the TWRP backup and my phone is back to stock and getting a signal. Thanks again to the both of you.

What I suggested worked without the TWRP backup? Or another way?
your best bet is to somehow find a way to install the stock rom through TWRP then you can install the KDZ. Cause I had the same issue as you, i have a Verizon V20 with the US996 rom and it wouldnt let me flash the verizon KDZ until I installed NotSoStock rom thats based on the Stock Verizon Rom
EDIT: Just saw you got back to Stock. Disregard this lol

I didn't use the TWRP backup at all in the end. Your method didn't fully install, but it made the phone see itself as an H915 again which allowed uppercut/LGUP to install the KDZ so it was a big help
Congrats! on the recovery, this is a good reference thread for anyone trying to recover from a bad root, and needs to get back to stock.

@mmjs 14
Are you saying you have a rooted 915 with everything working?
guess not lol
I am having the same issue with an h910, but the service only works sometimes. Many times it is searching (and draining the battery in the process), but sometimes it will get service and be OK. Quite frustrating, and no way to revert because no kdz available. Anyone else with h910 having this problem?
Hi,
I'm not sure if I'm off topic here or not. I have an LG V20 H910-10c (Nougat 7.0) and I am having an issue with a Service not working after using DirtySanta to Root my phone and I am praying that someone can help me out with. I have already tried a Factory Wipe/Reset and Wipe Dalvik/ART & Cache and have Formatted Data to remove Encryption, etc..
Timeline: The phone worked fine in all aspects before Rooting it.
After Rooting it, I had this issue.
I then tried a Factory Reset and got stuck in a TWRP Bootloop.
I fixed the Bootloop issue with a Reset (Yes then Yes).
The issue is still there.
ISSUE: When I boot into Android, I get the following message;
"LGSmartcardService has stopped"
.....and I cannot use my External SD Card (TWRP sees it fine, I Flashed SuperSU from it).
I have Googled my brains out and simply cannot find any suggestions, except to perform a Factory Reset, which I did and that's what put me into the Bootloop and I reset the way you said and now it boots up okay, except that error message is still there.
I have not put any apps on the phone or anything. It's factory fresh (except for Rooting it).
I hope I'm not violating any rules by posting this, but the page I used to Root it has a REAL SMALL downloadable file called "V20-Root.zip" that contains everything, including the Batch files with the steps that they perform in them. I did NOT use the ROM, as that's ONLY for Sprint users and my phone is an AT&T model (Unlocked and my Carrier is MetroPCS). But I put it here, just in case someone wishes to bless me by taking a look and seeing if there's something to note. I am not a coder by any means. I do understand some basics, but I couldn't see anything that would cause this sort of problem. I did NOT install the ROM listed, because it's for Sprint users ONLY and I have an AT&T (Unlocked, using MetroPCS) H910. Here's the link to the page:
https://tinyurl.com/yacdendm
I really need my Ext SD Card to be seen! I use it extensively and it would be a real hindrance not to have it! Plus this is my ONLY phone (no landline) and I am disabled and must run everything, including my home network and laptop, etc. from it and I need its space for things I have to have available on my phone to do things that I need to do, so any help would be appreciated GREATLY!
I do need to be Rooted, so going back to factory with whatever Mpdel # ROM an LG Tool sees me as might make me unable to Root again.
Please Help Me and Thank You!
Dave
Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to read and respond
I got a Verizon sm-g930v Galaxy s7 and my service is through T-Mobile.
I currently have Verizons very recent nougat 7 release with security patch of February 1, 2017 and baseband G930VVRU4BQA2.
I have 2 issues which might be related and I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to do it and if it is at all possible.
1) my lte speed is crap and service inside buildings is awful. I read that there are ways to unlock the bootloader but couldn't find how to do it on my phone.
2) no ussd codes work even after factory reset, every single ussd code I put (even the one to view imei) says ussd running and then says connection problem or invalid mmi.
Is it possible to flash T-Mobile nougat firmware on my phone? Will it unlock the bootloader to allow me to unlock all lte bands?
Is there another better way to solve the above issues?
Thanks for your help!

1. find/download the firmware you want to install on your phone (can find at updato.com)
2. extract the files from the firmware file to a folder
3. download/install Samsung Smart Switch
4. backup your phone settings with Samsung Smart Switch (if you have a memory card, maybe be good to remove that and back it up on PC, probably faster this way than thru Samsung Smart Switch)
5. install the latest version of Odin on your PC, open it
6. select BL/AP/CP/CSC buttons then select the matching file (BL for BL_xyz file, etc) - if you use the HOME_CSC file you will NOT have any tmobile specific features (Wifi Calling) enabled/appear, you must use the regular CSC file to add/enable these features
7. in Odin, select OPTIONS and make sure that only "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" are checked
8. put the galaxy s7 phone in download mode (turn off....while off press VolumeDown+Home+Power until a blue screen appears, press VolumeUp button to enter download mode)
9. connect the galaxy s7 phone to the PC (you should see a blue icon appear under ID:COM afterward)
10. hit START in Odin to begin the process
11. when the process is complete (PASS appears in Odin status window) the galaxy s7 will reboot and begin to install the update
ISSUE - if the phone boots to recovery mode, dm-verity verification failed....DO NOT PANIC....simply put the phone back in download mode, connect it to the PC, and in Odin ONLY select the AP file....install only that file and let the device restart, it should boot to the user menu)
NOTES - while the device is booting to the user menu, it may sit at the Tmobile splash screen an extended amount of time the initial time - please let it sit for a few minutes, and it will boot to the user menu (subsequent restarts don't have a long delay at Tmobile screen)
12. after it boots to the user menu, connect the galaxy s7 to the PC, and restore the phone using Samsung Smart Switch

Thank you, I finally got to doing it. It was easy and I now have T-mobile OS on the phone, all Verizon stuff is gone and USSD codes now working. It seems like I was able to select all LTE bands, speed is a bit better indoors but not amazing.
Is there a reason to fully root the phone? and can someone explain what benefits would I have from rooting at this point?

Rooting gives you full control over the phone. Think Windows "Administrator" account.
Some things that a rooted phone can do is fully disable and uninstall stock & carrier Bloatware, install true ad blocking services, firewall control.
But, with that kind of power, it's way easier to brick your phone, or kill the performance of the device if you start changing things that shouldn't be changed.
Thank you

This is an old thread, so I am hoping on some newer information. I have been using a Verizon Galaxy S7 on T-Mobil for about a year. This past week we were in the Lake Michigan area and I found that my wife's A21 got much better reception in several areas. I have been reading here about the g930U firmware as well as the ability to flash to the current T-Mobile ROM.
I do not need to revert back to Verizon, but I need wifi calling and all the bands that are available from T-Mobile. Can just flashing to the T-Mobile for Android 8 work for me?

So I was just a bit confused with the sheer amount of small threads that try to answer questions regarding the Korean variant of our beloved device with consistent questions and answers floating around, so this guide aims to consolidate those threads as it seems like we need a unified thread for this variant.

Flashing a ROM
Yes, you can actually flash any ROM on your device! ROM developers should be informed to use the model number from TWRP to determine what device you are running, to distinguish between the S8 and the S8+.
Our device reports back "dream2lte" in TWRP but the actual model number of our device is "dream2lteks" with a model number of SM-G955N.
Do not flash a ROM that edited the build.prop for the SM-G955N without full system prop modifications implemented, or else Magisk Hide would NOT work.
The steps are simple to flash a custom SM-G955N ROM but must be followed to the T:
1. You've got to trip KNOX, which will void the warranty! But we imported our phones, so who we kidding? You've got no warranty anyways!
2. Once you spent a few heartfelt minutes thinking about the pros and cons, you will have to flash @jesec's TWRP on your device following ALL instructions of his guide, including flashing the decrypt ZIP. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...pment/recovery-twrp-galaxy-s8-exynos-t3595102
3. Pick your ROM, if the ROM requests you to flash BL and CP, you CANNOT flash the G955F versions, as we have a completely different bootloader!!! If they have the G955N variants, then feel free to update it if you want, as this step is NOT mandatory. It IS safe to flash a 955F kernel on your 955N!
4. Place the ROM zip into your MicroSD and the CSC Flasher, but do NOT use TWRP to transfer these files. MTP will stop working Midway (all variants of the S8+, roughly at 1.5gb) so I suggest doing it before going to recovery, or if it's too late, just use a microSD adapter and add it in there. Recommended drive format: exFAT.
5. Flash the ROM as you would from TWRP, depending on your ROM, it may have a debloat Aroma menu. If there's a way to update the BL and CP inside the Aroma menu, DO NOT. Some ROMs ask if you would like to flash a CSC (that you're not interested in), so pick DBT (Germany) unbranded.
6. After flashing the ROM, depending on your ROM, you may need to reboot back into recovery using Reboot -> Recovery to avoid the Device or Resource is Busy error in TWRP...to flash the CSC package.
7. It is highly recommended to use unbranded CSCs but it is not 100%. If you are in Canada like me, the CSC package for Rogers Wireless (RWC) under XAC causes a ton of keyboard force closes and random reboots. While the XAC unbranded default CSC runs better but still has keyboard force closes. There may be an error with mounting and unmounting /preload, a non existent partition on our variant...which is perfectly okay!
8. Ensure that you remember the above steps when you're dirty flashing a ROM update, because if you forget to flash the same CSC from the previous flash, you will lose CSC benefits like VoLTE, LTE-A and wifi calling until you factory reset!
9. If you're looking for root, you MUST reflash Magisk v12+, or else you won't get any MagiskSU green flags. Seems to be happening mostly on our Korean variant.
10. You're done!
Frequently Asked Questions (Buyer's Questions)
Q: I'm planning to buy this phone but not planning to root it, what kind of bloat are there.?
Custom SK Telecom Bootanimation with sound
One full folder of Korean applications from the carrier, including Samsung bloat that are all Korean-region bounded.
An out of place second carrier label in the lock screen (bottom left)
Settings has two extra options, T roaming and T security. You can get rid of the T security shortcut in Settings by disabling the T membership app using Package Disabler Pro (Samsung) on Play Store. T roaming cannot be removed. Depending on your device's original carrier, you may get the KT service provider entry.
Camera can't disable shutter noise. Korean law.
Bootloader is Korean. Unchangeable.
Q: Are there any carrier markings on the device?
Yes, but really unnoticeable. There are no FCC markings at the back of the phone but just a line of text, and at the end of that line of text just says SKT. It is as natural as a phone that tells you where it was manufactured.
Q: Can I Odin a stock SM-G955F firmware or CSC file?
No, you can't flash anything SM-G955F in any slot of Odin. Doing so will just fail or secure flash error.
Q: Can I use a CSC from a company that sells S8+'s with Qualcomm on my Exynos device?
Yes, but it may need some testing. In Canada, if you have the proper CSC, I confirmed to get VoLTE and Wifi Calling after flashing the RWC CSC. But the XAC CSC may not enable Wifi Calling but will enable VoLTE. LTE-A is almost supported on all CSCs, so you don't have to worry about that.
Q: If I flash an SM-G955F ROM on my device, will it affect my RAM or storage?
No. You will retain 128GB and 6GB RAM on any ROM.
Q: Can I disable bloat apps without rooting?
Yes, but you may have to use a paid app, linked here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro&hl=en
Search for "SKT" and it is safe to disable them all. Disabling T membership as stated above will disable the Settings shortcut to it to, but T roaming will not disappear.

Thanks for the amazing guide. All working. Btw I saw that latest batstock rom is version 1 not 1.1?
My device now shows that its 955f is that OK? I installed the ilo israel csc so how can I update the rom with that csc without loosing data? Thanks!
There was a system update today. Anyone know the changes?

BTW I did not reflash magisk, just downloaded magisk manager from play store and install from there.

Yeah I'm in the testers chat on the Telegram link but the model number is just a build.prop check.
As long as you update the ROM with the CSC before booting up, you won't lose any data.

Were you able to obtain root? Depending on your set up, you may not have any root like what happened to me, so I had to reflash. Also I tried a no root option from BatStock and if it doesn't patch your boot image, then you'd be stuck on the Samsung logo indefinitely.

I was able to fully obtain rom. what I did is after the phone booted up (after the rom installation), I downloaded magisk manager from app store, then clicked on install inside the manager. when the phone booted up afterwards i was fully rooted. also checked with root info and various root apps.
just one thing is not clear to me. now i'm on batstock 1.0 with stock kernel and untouched bl and modem. and with ILO csc from the csc tool.
now when i want to upgrade to batstock 1.1, say a dirty flash to keep data. what are the steps?
1. copy the zip file of the rom and the zip file of the csc tool to sd
2. reboot to twrp, install the rom file dirty flash and not to reboot
3. before reboot, install the csc zip file in twrp
4. reboot

4. reboot
did i get that alright?
thank you !

Yes that's correct, because a dirty flash is going to wipe the CSC, since the CSC is located in the /system folder, the ROM upgrade will wipe system and you lose your CSC, but the preferences are stored in /data, so your procedure is correct. If you get any resource is busy errors in aroma, reboot recovery before flashing the CSC
thanks ! any news about the update that rolled out today for unrooted devices?
Thanks for the thread mate.. I was also thinking of making this up...

Bluetooth connectivity fixes and some stability features
Just be sure to look at the last 4 characters to see what the new version code is, in this case, AQEB.

The reason it got stuck on the Samsung logo was because, as I listed in my main threads, they used the wrong way of detecting model, so it was not installing a kernel for your device and you were booting with no kernel.
Unfortunately, that's what happens if you import a device. But I'm not so sure if Samsung China would be able to help you since your device is not from China. Maybe if you go to a small shop, you could inquire prices there, or watch a video and buy a new screen for yourself maybe.

Yeah i will go to service center tomorrow...i am afraid to go to small shop because i think they won't be able to provide water resistant after opening the phone...

As far as I know with my experience of small shops in Hong Kong, they have kits to apply back on the device for waterproofing.
Rooted, is there a way to get past "This application does not work on your device"
I am using the ATT variant of the V20 and have ATT for my carrier.
Using "*#*#4636#*#*" gets you into the Testing menu, once you click "Phone Information" you are greeted with a pop up that says: "Note This application does not work on this device" (picture attached).
I rooted using this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/root-h910-v10m-t3664500 and installed supersu. Big thanks to runningnak3d for this method.
Given that I had root access I was hoping there would be a way to get around this menu block. My ultimate goal is to be able to turn off certain bands when needed which I believe is available in this menu. In particular, band 2 does not work well in my area and I would like to be able to turn it off when needed.
Where is the programming that tells the phone to not allow us to access this menu, and is it somewhere that we can access and change with root permissions?

I'm hunting the same solution.
Rooted H910
I've found "How to force 'LTE only' on LG V20" and "LG V20 CDMA to LTE/GSM switch via Hidden Menu"
While *#546368#*910# does work, the RAT Selection menu is absent.
I have not yet tried the APK. Not sure if I should.

This really seems like it should be a simple solution.
You can see the Phone Information screen behind the pop-up. It is clearly running, and active.
Would this not be a setting in settings.xml, or something that could be changed with grant / deny in adb shell?
Any devs have any insight as to how LG broke this function??
OK... I'm a network guy, not a programmer.
So, I may be completely off base here.
But, this is what (I think) I see:
The property sheet in question is launched by activity "com.android.settings.RadioInfo".
This appears to be RadioInfo.JAVA contained in settings.jar.
However, /system/framework/settings.jar is far too small to contain the 100+ JAVA files that comprise the structure of the property sheets.
See this and this.
I want to preface that I haven't looked at this at all -- but the first thing I would try would be changing the model in build.prop. It is going to be a quick, stupid check. It is definitely not doing the check against aboot since aboot would return US996 (since that is what the eng. bootloader is from).

Brian,
I'm glad you're looking at this. Although changing the model doesn't seem like it would do much.
Disabling this menu is something LG is doing across the board. The only exception at this time seems to be the LG made Nexus 5.
What about replacing the H910 settings.jar with one from the US996 (assuming the menu works on the US996)?
A step further: What about flashing the H910 with firmware for another variant?
I bought my H910 because it had the widest range of LTE band support. But, I'm not on AT&T.
Can I get a generic, unbranded ROM that will run on the H910 hardware - and everything works?
They don't disable it across the board because that menu works on the H918 which is why I figured they were doing a model check.
Yes, you can flash US996 firmware onto the H910. There is a thread around here on what you need to backup before doing that.
Since you are rooted, you can also just grab the US996 system image, and flash that leaving the firmware H910.

My Name is Maxton. I am 11 years old and trying to flash a lineage OS Equivalent on my LG V20. Any advice?
Hi Maxton,
Glad you made it here.
1.You might want to read this:
H918 - lafsploit works - trying to install latest official Lineage
Greetings from Los Angeles. After following the steps kish and runningnak3d provided using lafsploit, I am having difficulty narrowing down what I’m missing. My goal is to be running the latest Lineage official builds. With high-end specs, an...
forum.xda-developers.com
to decide if the LOS (Lineage OS) on H918 is for you or not.
2. And if more information needed after that, try searching for H918 Lineage (or, replace H918 with your own model)
3.
You need to start by finding out:
a. what model is your V20: (In settings and also on the label under the battery)
models with unlockable boot loaders WITHOUT using the engineering aboot:
H918 - (use fastboot oem unlock)(T-Mobile)(engineering bootloader dont work on TMO - instant brick!)
US996 - (use unlock.bin from LG) (GSM Unlocked for US Cellular with CDMA)
models that can use "engineering aboot" (leaked dev version of bootloader)
using the engineering aboot: "BUT we have an engineering aboot for the rest of V20s,
and we can just push the engineering aboot, and twrp just like back when dirtycow worked"
H910 - (AT&T) - some reports of issues
H990 - (T-Mobile, Verizon, Unlocked, AT&T for HK[Dual SIM 990N], Global[Dual SIM 990DS and Mexico[990T])
VS995 - (Verizon with CDMA)
LS997 - (Sprint with CDMA)
b. what ARB you're on, ARB0 or ARB1
dial: *#LGMENU#*model# , so if your model is H918 then ( *#546368#*918# )
choose SVC Menu
choose Version
scroll to bottom
c. what software version you are running:
SETTINGS > ABOUT PHONE > SOFTWARE INFO
d. what Android OS you are running - see that in About Phone as well, it is either Nougat 7x or Oreo 8x
With this information about your phone, a lot more of what you read will start making sense.
4. I can't give you the exact step by step, because I don't know it. However, I can give you this advice:
Do not do anything until you fully unlocked your bootloader (if it applies to your model), and verified it is unlocked. Because if you do, you may get in to a catch 22 situation where to fix it you need the unlocked bootloader, but you can't unlock it because the phone won't boot. Once unlocked, think twice before locking it back, accept OTA, etc. Read about that before doing it.
5. Try to read as much as you can before you do anything to it, especially about every situation that causes a "brick" , and about ways out of a brick. There is so much info here, but all dispersed in so many threads, you might want to think of a method of how to make sure that once you read something, you will never have to read it again, or at least be able to instantly find it. You will appreciate that over time.
6. For your second thread, try naming it in a way that has your main question, like "How to get the latest Lineage on H918?". Thing is, people are busy, they read thread titles and open only those they are interested in. Whats worse, sometimes they only search for threads titles containing certain keywords. So, that way more people are likely to read your thread.
On the other hand, some of the best guys here learned what they know by doing it, and breaking many phones in the process. The trick is that this way, you never forget and you don't waste time, so if this way suits your personality better, it is not a bad way to go, it is only things, you'll have many more.
