Full Wipe With TWRP No Rom - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
I basically did a full wipe of my S4 I9505 because I wanted to change roms the new rom is the Dirty Unicorn in the i9505 thread. Everything has gone the last thing TWRP said before I turned it off was my phone wasn't rooted and to install SU then it went off. I tried to restart the phone in download mode which works then tried to reboot normally it wouldn't go past the start screen. I am assuming I need to flash TWRP the Dirty Unicorn Rom through Odin? Is what I'm thinking right or is there alternatives?

TWRP doesn't care if your phone is rooted or not.
Can you boot into TWRP?
If not, try flashing TWRP again through Odin then flash Dirty Unicorns with TWRP.

Thanks for that GDReaper it doesn't boot into TWRP now. I'll try that as soon as possible.
With the Dirty Unicorns rom it said do a full wipe I'm assuming that's the standard TWRP wipe even though it said do internal and external sd card wipe?

you never have to wipe external, if you did and also wiped internal as well you'd be deleting all your user files including the new rom you intended to flash. that would leave you needing to download the rom and gapps again on a computer and then transferring them to your external SDcard before you could continue.
click on wipe, then advanced wipe and tick
dalvik/art
cache
data
preload
and system... then swipe to start the process
actually there is a time when you might wipe all your memory including internal and external memory but it should be telling you that you have to backup all your files somewhere first I'm such cases...

Thanks for that 3mel!
That's what happened. I'm assuming I need to put my sd card in a card reader and transfer that way?

yes or if you have an adaptor for it, it might go into an SD slot if your laptop has one...

It's booting up now I can't thank you guys enough for your quick responses and sound advice!

Installation:
You must have flashed a Android 7.0 Samsung Firmware with Odin.
TWRP recovery
Format data in recovery
First installation needs a full wipe! (Updating to newer releases a dirty flash will do)...

There is no way to flash Android 7.0 to this phone with Odin.

[Q] Question about TWRP backups before I wipe.

I have never had a device without a removable SD and am used to having the contents of my SD protected when I wipe and then flush, i mean flash (hah). When I wipe with TWRP, will I lose my pix, audio, etc as they are not on a separate partition?

If you lost your pix, audio, etc that would really really suck. I don't think I would flash new ROMs daily. So of course the contents of internal SD are protected. UNLESS you choose to wipe internal storage in TWRP so don't mess with those advced options. They call it a factory reset in TWRP but its not like the phone option to factory reset which does wipe internal storage.
Your app data is lost. Just back up with titanium backup. After flashing new ROM install only TB, then restore apps and data (no system apps!) and you're done!
And make sure you have a backup! If anything does go wrong just restore it.
alright so lets say i download a rom and put it on my internal, then i boot into twrp do i just factory reset or what? i dont understand what to wipe to keep internal intact sorrry im a noob
in TWRP do a factory reset and install the new rom (and gapps if its CM rom) and you are golden.
stuck on team win screen
ok I need some serious help my battery is about to die! I rooted my phone last night and this morning I installed twrp 2632 and then rebooted and the phone now will not boot past the twrp screen then I got a call to go to a hospice home and that took several hours in the meantime my phone will not do anything just drain battery! any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

odin pc doesn't erase everything??

hey guys i was under the impression that if i flashed stock firmware using the pc version of odin it was supposed to format my phone to clean without having to use recovery to delete everything.
this isn't the case with me, odin pc (ver 1.85) seems to be dirty flashing these stock roms on my phone if i don't wipe in recovery.
is this right or is something wrong here?
I've seen the same thing. It doesn't necessarily wipe the internal sd card

That's the way all the version of Odin PC work.
That's why it's always best to go into recovery and do a clean wipe including data,
system, cache, dalvik cache and last but not least do a "Factory Reset" in recovery.
Doing it that way always gives the best results. (it does not wipe the sdcard)
Good luck!

Fix freeze , lags etc.

Hello people my phone getting old i think 1.5 year so far my phone started to freeze having lags getting too hot while browsing. And bootloops started without flashing anything. First bootloop happened 2 weeks ago. Today happened again twice i wiped dalvik cache and everything is fine how can i fix it? I thought rom cause it i flashed stock firmware rooted it and removed bloatware. Still happens lags, freeze, getting too hot and bootloop. Is it lollipop update? I never had this issues with kitkat. How can fix this and keep my alive?

Try a full factory reset. Be careful as this will wipe your internal storage.

Thank you for your answer but I did it after flash stock rom via odin. Wiped data / factory reset , cache partition , mounted cache , system , data , wiped dalvik cache..
Wiping data does not equal a factory reset. Wiping data does just that, wipes user installed apps. But generally leaves the internal storage alone.
A factory reset returns the phone to the settings it came out of the factory with, including a clean internal storage(If you have the stock rom). I heard that changing roms and just wiping data, dalvik and cache will still leave behind some files.
But it could also be untrue.

Flashing stock rom is same with factory reset i think clears everything.
I don't know. Haven't flashed stock on this device yet.
But don't most guys recommend doing a wipe before going back to stock?
I dont know i'll try that when i have free time. I did research some guys saying lollipop causing these problems. I'll try wipe before flash stock rom again , if issues keep happen i'll use lates 4.4.2 custom rom. Thank you for your answers i'll report back.
Real reset
This method will wipe everything, including operating system and efs files. Before you do this:
you must root
Download twrp recovery
Install the recovery using the app from the play store
Boot into recovery mode and have twrp backup everything
save your backup to an SD card and the computer (can't hurt to have two backups)
Doing the above will preserve your phone important data like your imei and efs
in case something goes wrong.
NOW
after you have backed everything up use twrp recovery to wipe data. Have twrp wipe everything except for your SD card (don't won't to lose the backup)
After everything has been obliterated have twrp boot you into download mode.
Download Odin from XDA preferably 3.09 (most stable release) and then grab an official stock firmware from a trusted source. The latest stock firmware should be at least 4.4.2
If you have carriers other than t-mobile you will also need to find a PIT file for partitioning.
When you have all of this open up Odin with your phone connected in download mode and make sure repartitioning, clear efs and nand-erase is checked along with the defaults.
Select pda button and choose your firmware (unzipped tar.md5 format.) Then select repartitioning PIT file button and direct to where you have the PIT file downloaded.
now click start (be sure that the Com port is recognized by Odin: will be highlighted in blue or yellow.)
This will take a while depending on your computer.
when it finishes your phone should reboot with a fresh os and filesystem. If you get stuck in a bootloop reboot into recovery mode and do a wipe data and wipe cache. Reboot and your phone should be good as new.
IMPORTANT!!! It is vital you keep your TWRP backups for as long as you have your phone if you lose them and something goes wrong while flashing your phone you will lose important things such as IMEI baseband which will prevent you from connecting to your network and Sim card recognition.
Thank you so much i'll try this now.

Is that another custom recovery?
If so then yes just make sure you have all of your system files and most importantly your efs backed up.
Run odin as administrator if that doesnt work, try using another version of Odin.

What carrier are you using, model number of the phone, etc.
Have you backed everything up? And can you flash the custom recovery through Odin if it fails?
Try it without wiping efs first just to be safe
Look here for your device you will be able to find standalone flash able versions of twrp that should work through odin.

Using i9500. And i did what you said and works fine thank you! Mods close thread please.

Encryption Password not working

Hey, so I can't decrypt my device anymore. Not in Android itself, and not in the recovery. I've tried sideloading no_verity.zip and formatting the system via fastboot, so far nothing helped. When I try to flash the stock rom via sideload, it says it's not readable. I don't know if thats because I didn't decrypt the device before flashing or because the zip is faulty, but I've tried 3 diffrent roms, including one that has worked before.
Is there anything I can do to get my phone working again?
Device: Onepluss 5 6GB
Rom: Omnirom
Install latest codeworkx twrp or blue spark twrp, skip password menu, format data (not wipe), reboot recovery, now wipe everything, then flash what you want

Thank you! That worked. I figuered formatting data and wiping data would work quite the same, but thanks for proofing me wrong ^^

Update from older LineageOS version?

Hello all,
My apologies if this has been asked before. A while back I successfully installed LineageOS 14 on my S4 i9505.
I would like to install the newer version of LineageOS but I am not sure on how to do this if I have already installed an older version.
I would like to do a clean install, aka reformatting the phone with the latest version.
Do I have to reformat the device first to the original officially supported manufacturer's Android version (Android Lollipop) or is there a way to reformat the device directly to the newer version of LineageOS? How can I do this?
Can somebody please help me with this?
Just download the rar file that contains the latest version of lineageOs, flash it together with the gapps nano or pico, the clean installation is to do wipe data, wipe cashe and wipe internal memory, only leave external memory and usb otg unchecked

Thanks for the help. Where do I put the lineageOS and gapps files? I don't have an external SD card. I recall using a PC software back then but is it also possible to flash the ROM without using the PC and without having an SD card?

I read that clean installation (wiping internal memory) is also possible using a usb stick with the rom connected to the device through OTG without the need of an external SD card. Is this correct?

Yes, you can have the ROM, GApps etc in any other external drive which can be connected with ur device in TWRP so you can be able to flash it.
You can also wipe everything first and then connect your device to PC while u are in TWRP and transfer the ROM, GApps etc to your clean Internal Storage and then flash.

Ok I've got a problem.
So I've clean installed LineageOS 17.1 for the S4 I9505 along with GApps pico through OTG (from a previous older LineageOS version 14.1) after wiping internal memory, system, Dalvik cache and cache. The installation went succesfull but the phone now infinitely keeps rebooting back into TWRP recovery mode after a long while of showing the LineageOS 17.1 loading icon. Even though I have selected to reboot the System. Using TWRP 3.2.3-0.
- Tried reinserting the battery and boot into Download mode and then cancel but this also doesn't break the loop.
- Wiping Davlik as well as cache also didn't break the loop.
What gives?

Be sure you are on the latest Modem & Bootloader.
Download ROM and GApps Pico ARM and move them on your external drive.
Reboot to TWRP:
Select Wipe > Advanced Wipe
Select Dalvik / ART Cache, System, Data, Cache and then Swipe to Wipe.
Connect your device while you are in TWRP with your External Drive which has the ROM and GApps and transfer them on the clean Internal Storage.
Flash ROM and GApps (Pico)
Go back and select Wipe > Format Data > type yes [All your data into Internal Storage will be lost]
Reboot Enjoy!
