Battery Question - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have been using my nexus 6p for quite a while flashing custom roms like crazy and I read in one of the threads that the battery is best with the stock, so I decided to try it, except I am not getting a real difference.
Now, I need some help reading the battery graphs. I have tried bunch of battery apps to test the wakelock and haven't found much issues. I have turned off scanning, location, wifi, the only thing I did not turn off was the data. I even tried to turn off the SYNC one time and didn't make much difference.
I suspect it is my network. I am getting LTE in my area, but I don't know how to read the signal in the stock battery graph. In total I can be getting about 4 SOT at the end of my day down to 10 percent and I see people are getting crazy 6 or 7. Images below

You're gonna need to use something like BetterBatteryStats to investigate properly, the stock battery stats app is pretty much useless.

I tried the better battery stars, and the gsam battery, I couldn't really detect much out of it. Do you think I can monitor the signal drain? Do you think it could drain the battery this much?
Thanks,

It's impossible for me to say what's going on with the images you've already provided, they're not accurate. Run BBS for a day and post screenshots of the Other, Alarms, Kernel Wakelocks, and Partial Wakelocks screens.

Best radio signal to use? (battery life)

I can use *#*#4636#*#* and I read somewhere that it can help with battery life if I set a certain antenna from there? I forgot where I read it though, if someone can please let me know that would be great. There are NO rogue apps running, I only have about 10 installed.
The phone is 4 days old, so it could be why but I've battery cycled it twice already (letting it run dead and recharging it for 10 hours). All my widgets are off except weather and that is set to update every 3 hours and it is NOT using GPS. Wifi is off, so is bluetooth. Gps is off as well.
Is anyone using maximum power saver or just the regular nighttime setting for those reporting better battery life? I also uninstalled launcher pro, it seemed to glitch my phone a lot with the google toolbar and also seemed to have a slightly bigger toll on my battery. Also battery health is stating "Good". Is that the best or does it still need more conditioning?
You probably shouldn't change things in there. Look elsewhere to conserve battery.
You didn't note what your battery life is like either. But you should still let the battery charge and drain a few more times before trying to squeak out more battery life by modifying something like this....

Well I'll give you an example. The phone was unplugged almost 6 hours yesterday, and I used it around 3 hours and 46 minutes max. It got down to 5 percent and shut off. I had my music i was listening to for 25 minutes. I had my IM program on for about an hour, had a 12 minute phone call. Was texting back and forth mainly, and I checked a few things on the browser and exited out. MY IM program uses GPS to get my location but only when I request to do so, then shut the gps off. I force closed it when I was done to be sure it wasn't gonna drain any more of my battery. My notifications are off mainly except for my texts and such. And this was with JuiceDefender on the last half of the battery.
I don't like programs like Juice Defender to be honest. They usually go buggy and drain the battery more than it saves. People just get excited and leave positive reviews.
I'd honestly reset to factory settings in case there was a one-off glitch. Set things up again and use it like you would normally to gauges things. My battery lasted over 40 hours from the first charge.
With results that bad, I wouldn't troubleshoot beyond resetting it. Take it back if that's the case. That's not right. And it's not worth your time.

Thanks. I just got the phone not sure why I would need to factory reset it. Is there a way I can back my data up and such like texts and pics/apps?
Also 40 hours!? Jeeze do you like never use your phone at all? haha. That is insane my iPhone 4 never even got that good of battery life.

That code just pushes your phone to use EDGE only and not 3G. It can increase battery life if your phone is constantly trying to hold on to a spotty 3G signal, which can be common .

Generally. I allow that there are some that are not battery hogs. I do know the chat program on my Touch Pro (I forget what it was) would suck my battery dry in an hour or two if left running in the background.

Ridiculous battery drain on standby

It seems that the battery drain on my newest N7 (RMA'd first one) is waay worse than on the other, I'll attach some screen shots of what I mean.. it may be just the WiFi is using a lot more than the other's :S I left it 4 hours alone with WiFi and the battery drained 20+ % which even with WiFi on seems excessive does it not? Is it possible I got one with a faulty WiFi radio? I will be testing tomorrow (or maybe tonight) to see battery drain with WiFi turned off to compare, because it also seemed to drain fast when I was just out and about with WiFi off :/ worried I have bad battery, deep sleep isn't working right (it is going into deep sleep or at least thinks it is from looking at cpuspy), or faulty WiFi... or just too early to judge XD has anyone noticed battery improve over time ? I forget if I did was a month ago I got the original
BTW first screen shot was taken pretty much right as I was leaving for work, so you can compare the battery drain there..

I doubt it's a bad wifi radio, its probably an app that is syncing like crazy in the background.
I'm currently watching the MediaServer app use a disproportionate amount of battery (14% and rising). I deleted a number of images which must of kicked in the scanner which must be very inefficient.
I also noticed my N7 become very slow at the same time.
Possibly you downloaded a large amount of images/music/etc before putting your device to sleep...

I really wish I could figure out why maps keeps starting a process.. can you check to see how many instances of maps there are ? In particular one running Prefetcherservice.. as for the other comment, media server is sitting at 6%, android is at 14%, and screen at 67%.. though I did copy a bunch of songs and pictures over after the RMA, is there a way to fix these or should I delete them to see if it gets better ?

Sigh, I might just have a bad battery, or preferably poorly calibrated, since another hour of use, just browsing and such, and I'm down 20% more -_- hope I don't have to RMA again

As a side question.. how hot does your tablet get under normal use? Mine has been heating up quite a bit in the battery section i think with just average on browser use :/

Bahaha good one I dunno, the problem is that this is literally my fourth N7 since the other three allll suffered from major screen lifting, so maybe I am looking for something wrong just so i can make sure it's perfect... Though I do think the battery life is pretty weak, I think I may have figured SOMETHING out, the only difference between this and my original is that my original had a huge section of the map of my area downloaded, and since I did that maps hasn't started any additional processes.. so good sign ? maybe ? haha

Yeah this might be a good time to stop looking for trouble and just enjoy the tablet for a while. I drop mine on the charger in the morning and don't ever really think about the battery other than that. Whatever the battery stats say now they won't say in a week and they won't say after you flash to a different ROM. If you have wifi on apps will sync and the tablet will loose it's charge. I'm never far enough away from an outlet to make it much of a concern. So maybe just take a breather, install the Angry Birds and have some fun for a bit. Eventually we'll have ROM's and kernels that make this thing sip electricity but for now I get the few hours a day I need out of it on one charge so I'm set.

You think the battery life will get much better than what it is? My only other android experience is my HTC Desire Z which has a horrible battery as it is so it didn't improve much at all with custom roms
Speaking of improved life through ROMs and kernels, have you noticed any kernel providing particularly better battery life ? I'm on trinity right now, no voltage changing, but underclocked to 1.1 ghz from 1.3
Factory reset, see if the problem continues. That's the only way decide if it's a HW problem.
And my N7 uses effectively 0% battery in standby, it was off the charger yesterday for 6 hours and when I started playing around it was still at 99%. I turn off wifi on screen off, however.
Use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 to find out what's waking up your phone, the apk is in the second post. Install, charge it up, unplug, leave for 4 hours idle then look at partial wakelocks and alarms.
I saved quite a bit of standby time by disabling location services and Facebook.
If your not using nfc that could save battery?

So it seems like partial wakelock is mostly audioout_2 which i assume comes from me playing a game with music amongst other things?
Alarms says com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox has 50 wakeups, and maps has 38 :S why does maps keep trying to kill me?! and what is the googlequicksearchbox doing waking the tablet up...
Wlan_Rx_wake seems to be the culprit of semi bad battery. Is there a way to prevent the tablet from waking up all the time? Maybe just unsync or turn off WiFi instead?

When my battery drain was bad I had something like 250+ wakeups from maps under the alarms section in only a few hours off the charger and Maps was showing up as the most common reason for partial wakelocks.
I think AudioOut_2 is normal - Im not sure what it does though. Im now at 8+ hours of standby with 99% battery. Under alarms im showing 138 Maps wakeups and 76 from google quick search box. My drain is all gone now though so i assume this is within normal range. The better battery stats thread and a few other threads on XDA have detailed descriptions of the different battery draining wakelocks and possible remedies. Not all wakelocks are bad though.

Battery drain behavior

Hello,
Just trying to figure out if my battery is normal.
With any ROM OR KERNEL combination here, I tried few, my battery is fantastic while phone is idle, no loss over night or all day if screen is off.
But once I start using the phone it drops like 3-5 % from few minutes regular use, yesterday I took few photos, sphere, panorama and it dropped 25%. I have max1350
Wake locks are OK, no stupid stuff eating at it.
Is this normal for people or?
To open xda and type this I Lost 2%

Nah, that's not normal.
- Bad signal reception?
- Google Now & maps updating non stop? Other apps, like facebook?
Post a screen shot of your battery usage graph, will make it easier to determine.
Have a look at this thread as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2107163 some people have been helped by flashing back to stock.
Was it always this bad?
The battery reporting is kinda broken. Add you say, it can hold constant when it should really be draining slightly, and then suddenly drop in one big go as it "catches up".
It's a common problem.

-I was thinking of signal, I think it's not so great at home, it jumps from 3g to H to H+, but it's like 4-5 bars. Not sure, is there an app to monitor the signal strength?
-I've been planing around so there are not solid stats yet. But I am running Liquid smooth I don't even have Maps. There no crazy wakelocks or apps running, otherwise even in idle mode I would loose power.
It pretty much been always like this, since I started flashing custom staff. Don;t remember on stock, as there is no batter % icon there, I reverted back to stock right now lets see.

Yes pretty much, I would not say i drops in one big number, but yes fast so pretty much same.
For example, to post the Thread i went from 35% to 32% after being idle all night, but then One Hour Driving to work with BT on pair with car, text messaging and e-mailing it dropped 1%.
The big question, if it's common problem, meaning not on every phone, so does t hat mean it's hardware and I should be calling Google?
or
is it 4.2.1/Custom ROM/Kernel problem?
is there a thread or anyone I can follow on this issue?
Thanks

I was on that until yesterday. Try it with Trinity or Franco's kernel, see what that does.
Didn't do what the op claims in that thread but then again, I didn't have any issues with the battery..
My phone was behaving the same way. The idle time would be great...no percents dropping for hours. But then when I'd actually use the phone the drop was sharp.
Lately its getting better for me...its dropping a bit on idle but also at a much slower rate when the phone is used.
I hope it'll be fixed in 4.2.2
Also keep in mind that the rendering process in photosphere does that huge amounts of battery.

Ok so It's not hardware I am thinking.
But did you do anything, like flash something different? which rom/kernel you are on now?
or
did it just settle over few cycles?
Again thanks everyone for valuable answers, much appreciated, I was getting worried.

[Q] How to improve Nexus 4 battery life?

Hi all,
I've been having problems recently with my phone not having good battery life. Although, I don't even think I've ever noticed good battery life recorded for it.
At this point in time, I'm struggling to get to 2 hours screen on time, with as the screenshots below showing at I'm at 20% with 1 hour 45 screen on time. I've seen screenshots of people recording at least 4 hours screen on time, yet that doesn't seem to be the case for my specific phone.
I've tried Franco's kernel's and I've still not noticed a difference in the battery life, it still seems to hover around 2 hours screen on time. Checking the wakelocks with the wakelock detector app, and it shows that my device doesn't seem to sleep as much as it should.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to stop these wakelocks? And/or improve my battery life? I'm currently doing everything you would expect (of the basic recommendations)
I'd greatly appreciate the help if someone knows what the issue is, or has had similar issues.
Thanks!
1.You can try undervolting.
2.Use Greenify to hibernate apps like facebook.
3.Calibrate your battery by draining it completly then charging it to 100% in one run, so no disconnecting from charger.
Good luck!

Clearly in your screenshot Google Services is keeping awake your phone. Solution here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385843
You can ask for help there. Also, for more battery life, try to UV and UC. I recommend Matrix kernel for excellent battery life. You don´t even have to tweak it, it already comes tweaked with perfect values by default.

It is not compatible with PA, because PA changed to JW branch on latest update. For now, I think that Franco is the only working.

try different rom ?
test it for few days see if that solves anything.
go with any jss rom and matrix kernel. its the best combo for very long battery life.

Very poor battery regardless of configuration

Hello. I have had a OP5 for the past year, having bought it a few weeks after it launched. However I have never gotten "good" battery performance. I just saw the thread where people posted their SOT, 8, 9 hours...? I can barely get 4, and that's if I'm on WiFi... The phone for me barely lasts a day? With far from heavy usage. I have tried various ROM/Kernel configurations but nothing helps. Currently I am using AEX and that's what I got yesterday (see attachment). Stock OOS is similar if not worse... I am soo frustrated about this issue. Could anyone point me towards what I am doing wrong? Battery stats don't show me anything wrong, I use normal apps like Facebook, Snapchat etc and they don't drain that much battery according to the stats. What could it possibly be?
Thank you

Battery stats don't show me anything wrong, I use normal apps like Facebook, Snapchat etc and they don't drain that much battery according to the stats. What could it possibly be?
Thank you

You can use better battery stats to explore more about your battery life. How to do that? Have a look at here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809

Thanks for the reply but I tried BBS, Accubattery and I'm currently trying Gsam, but none have showed me anything particularly wrong. It's just the percentage that goes down really fast

Here are my BBS stats for overnight, I lost 15% while the phone was simply left idle while I slept.

Sorry to say, but Screenshots are not a dump file. Also you have nearly 1h screen on time, that's too much.
Please read the linked thread about bbs and repeat the recording of a dump file according to the instructions in the first post.
Thanks!

(Not before tonight as I use my phone during the day and I have to let it sit for 6 hours right?)

Excellent idle drain of 0.5%/h, nothing to complain about. It's like mine. There's nothing to investigate imo.
Poor idle drain starts at 1%/h or above

I'm actually so surprised, it's the end of the day and I've gotten a very stable 3.5%/h on mixed usage.
Best battery life I've got since buying the phone over a year ago

I've just gone back to a much more routine lifestyle (summer is over) and so my phone followed suite, I don't use it so much during the day and the average drain of a whole day of small usage is 3-4% an hour which is great for me! However, whenever I start using is when things get out of hand, the usage shoots up to 20+% an hour. Very strange as it is obviously not a wakelock problem but a screen problem? Okay I don't have a 100% black substratum theme but I mean. The phone is designed to handle colours haha

Usage drain is nearly impossible to compare or analyze. But 20%/h is too much for op5 imp. Even with gaming.

I'm getting this massive wakelock from Google Services, even though I have the magisk module which is supposed to enable doze for it

Wakelocks are not dangerous in general. And Google play services are essential for majority of your communication.
Without a dump file like before its not possible to track down any issues to Google play services. And if you don't have a higher drain, it's just the observation of the wakelock.
