Extremely slow - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

for some reason when i turn my phone on the cpu will be at like 97 percent and itll stay there and if my apps auto update its like a death sentence my phone will just freeze and heat up until either i pull the battery out or it shuts on and off and wont come back on and when i pull the battery it takes it a long time to restart so its almost like a never ending circle and is getting really irratating the only thing that seems to help is hibernating apps but even that doesnt stop it
ive noticed it only does it while installing/downloading an app and if you pull the notification bar down itll freeze im running lollipop and moar

Do you have XPosed installed? It sounds like a memory leak. Try disabling all modules temporarily to see if the problem is resolved. If you do not have XPosed, what modifications have you done?

Turn off auto-updates and see what apps need to be updated. Do the same apps need to be updated every time you restart?

Yeah the same apps need to be updated unless they manage to update before the phone freezes and turning off the modules in xposed seems to have helped and restarting my phone fixed the calling problem I'm gunna try and turn each module on and see if it's a certain one that's messed up

Look in the directory /data/app
Do you see any directories that are duplicated?

Have you tried a factory reset?

GB debloating: removing "blur_yahoo.apk" breaks contacts.

I just spent some time trying to figure out what had broken my contacts functionality and this was it. Again, removing "blur_yahoo.apk" and the associated .odex file will break the contacts app. After removal, clicking on a contact in the dialer/contact app will just shut the app down. I've no idea why, since the yahoo app is for yahoo mail.

F**k...I just noticed that too
I noticed that freezing some of the messaging/social services also seems to force close the built-in message app too. If you use something like ChompSMS then it isn't a big deal b/c that still works.

You should probably do some more research before you start messing with that b/c it can brick the OS requiring a full install of the ROM. In this case, if you don't do a restore before removing stuff you'll be restoring the SBF file a lot.
But to answer your question though...the app you want is Titanium Backup Pro (aka the pay version b/c of the "Freeze" option.)

Well since the GB build for the DX just came out, I haven't been able to find a definitive thread anywhere (including on MyDroidWorld) listing what is save to remove or at least freeze. As of right now I think it's safe to say that its going to be a trial and error situation.
There are threads somewhere (droidforums?) about which of the 2.1 and 2.2 apps are safe to remove. While there are some new apps, those that were safe before are still safe. Of the new apps, the blur_yahoo is the only one that's given me trouble. Be warned, though, that while you can remove Backup Assistant and Blur Home, if you do a factory reset from within Android (rather than from clockworkmod), your initial install will break and you'll need to sbf if you can't get back into clockwork.
Also, bluremailengine is needed for blurcalendar to work properly. I remove bluremail, all the third party crap, all the social crap, swipe, and various other things I don't use like universal inbox, widgets, etc. Really, you just need to play with it.

Yea I know about those threads (I have one open right now actually) but since this is a whole new version of Blur & version of Android w/ a lot of changes & new options...who knows what Motorola changed or buried deeper into the system.
Thanks for being the guinea pig though I've never had a reason to use factory reset after a ROM is installed so removing BA & Blur Home isn't a big deal.
One question...have you removed the Messaging & Text Messaging apps at all? I still can't figure out what it was that caused the Text Messaging app to quit on me as soon as it was opened. Not that it's a big deal...b/c ChompSMS worked fine for me
Does anyone else notice a SEVERE amount of lag immediately after you reboot the phone? Lasts about 3-4 minutes every time I reboot then goes away. Affects everything from changing home screens, to opening apps, even turning the ringer volume up and down lags...

That's always been a problem with MotoBlur (and even HTC Sense)...it's all the services that load in the background all at once (even after freezing or removing some services.)

I removed all the messaging crap except the default messaging app (conversations.apk). I use Google Voice so I don't use the default app, but I sent myself a message using it and it worked just fine.
Note: you can do a data wipe/factory reset from within clockwork and you'll be fine.
If someone can produce a list of everything in /system/app (well, just the .apks would do), I can mark the ones I've successfully removed without problems.
Ditto to that...I'd be happy to contribute what I've frozen.

Mine takes about 10-15 seconds from the appearance of the homescreen until it's at full speed. Of course, I've overclocked to 1.2 GHz, debloated, zipaligned, implemented drod's rubix tweaks, and used autostarts to kill unnecessary apps from loading at boot.

Hmm. 10-15 seconds seems a tad excessive then. I'm still running stock speed, LPP 0.8.4.1, debloated most major apps and also used Autostarts to kill some apps at boot (as well as in the Widgets menu)...and while I see a slight lag it's not 10-15 seconds.

You're right. I just timed it. About 38 seconds from red M to full appearance of desktop (I've got the boot animation disabled) and about 25 seconds from full desktop to all widgets loaded and ready to go. I underestimated by 40-60%! I'm using the blur launcher, btw.
Something must be wrong with mine then...because mine lasts a good 3 to 4 minutes...and that seems very long for services to be starting...

Annoying Pop Up Ads

I have a Note 3 in Canada with Rogers and I am getting these extremely annoying pop up ads as soon as I unlock my phon it would pop up. It is basically a box in the middle of the screen different websites usually NSFW that give two options of either downloading or checking later. I have tried Push Detector and other Adware detector but they don't find any issues.
Please help.

If you have a rooted device you can always install Greenify and simply just hibernate all the apps you don't use.
None of the standard apps should do that -- and if Rogers has installed bloatware that does this then they should be taken to task.
It is almost certainly some app you installed,

What is happening when you click long on him ? Try keep finger little longer of him.
I tried holding the ad for a while to maybe the app info, but it wouldn't give me any option.
I can definitely feel my Note 3's performance has slowed down and battery drains much faster.
I used Greenify as well, using only the Apps that I am certain shouldn't have an adware but no dice.

Use Minmin guard and r xprivacy modules for xposed framework...
Minmin guard stops those annoying popup ads being downloaded from the net. Please note however that any popup downloaded already is still there and will be displayed until you clear cache and dalvik cache...
Xprivacy offers you the choice of allowing apps the right to use or block certain privelages, things like like access imei/contact lists/accounts and access to the internet and also root privelages... This is essentially a firewall that requires your authorisation to allow new apps the right to use your phone how it wants...

Sounds like you need to do a full wipe and stay away from that App. It's most likely a virus that will keep doing this. Do you install a lot of third-party apps? Like, you didn't find it on Google Play Store and you just downloaded it from internet and installed it?
I was thinking maybe I should just do a wipe and then see what happens.
I don't download a lot of third party apps but I have downloaded some.
How about clearing cache and Dalvik cache as the other poster had suggested?
My devise is rooted, maybe just back up the essential apps and install a new ROM ?
Maybe you should check your battery usage in Settings. If it is draining your battery, you should see the app on the list? Unless you know what app is causing it, you probably install it later and get it back. No, Dalvik and Cache clearing won't fix your problem.

If you rooted try in this way. Backup all user app with titanium backup.
Then uninstall all suspect and new installed app. if ad disappear then restore one by one with TB and see what make this popup

FC when trying to activate Power Saving mode

Ive a problem when trying to activate the Power Saving mode in settings.
when i press it i always get a Force Close on the Settings app. i can press the quick settings button in the notification area, but that does not seem to activate anything.
anyone has any idea? should i try to clear data on the settings app? or will i lose all of my settings?
thx
Anyone any idea?
I noticed that it works now when I use the quick settings tile in the notification pull down. Don't know if that's because I rooted and Uninstalled a bunch of samsung apps.
Anyways it's now also visible as activated in settings, but clicking in settings results in an fc still.
Another thing I noticed is that gsam battery monitor does lose battery stats from time to time, maybe that's because of the same problem.

If that is the case, try clearing cache from the Recovery and see if that works. If not, you can always try flashing the latest firmware!
Ok i will try tomorrow. But one question : where can I find the last firmware. I am pretty new to a Samsung device.
Thank you for your help

How to stop ActivityManager killing apps due to "high power cost"???

By now you may have heard about Axon 7 killing music playing app issue, if you haven't experienced it yourself already. For me I'm having a similar or at least related issue. The phone would kill my game when I turn off and on screen. After some investigation, below is my observation
1. Doesn't happen all the time. After a fresh reboot, no killing for a while... but after some time using the phone, it starts to happen
2. Not app-specific: After playing a game heavily for a while, the killing starts... only for that specific game. If I play a different game, then only that new game gets killed.
This have driven me kinda crazy. A look at adb logs reveals this:
12-22 12:45:34.229 I/ActivityManager( 1752): Killing 23881:jp.co.happyelements.toto/u0a122 (adj 0): excessive high power cost :jp.co.happyelements.toto
What the actual f***??? Why would ZTE kill my "excessive high power cost" process *after* I turn on the screen (and not when I turn off screen, which was 5 seconds earlier)??? Has nobody in ZTE thought about that apps that has "high power cost" may not be actually "excessive" but totally within reasons and fall into the category of normal every day use?
And no amount of changing the native "power saving" options stopped this behavior. Back in the days I remember there was some root/xposed module that would whitelist apps from being killed by the OS but I couldn't remember the name. So now I have to ask help on how to deal with this idiocy.
Edit: My apologies... I just noticed I posted in the wrong section... mods please move the thread to Q&A section if possible. Thanks a lot.
is there seriously no solution?
This is intolerable

I did. Didn't help.
If it was that easy, then I wouldne be here asking about it would I?
Yep, have the same problem after trying the same things. Several apps (2 of which I use for monitoring blood sugar levels) will randomly stop updating until either re-launched or the phone is rebooted. I have disabled all power manager options to no avail. Whatever power management system ZTE has implemented, it's FAR too aggressive.
Disclaimer - I haven't pulled logcats, but your description of the problem matches mine exactly. Here's hoping for a fix in Nougat and/or a custom ROM, otherwise I'm moving to a different phone. The A7 has great hardware but the stock software is a bloated mess.
B27 does not have this issue (which is why I downgraded to it). Might be a solution for you until the next upgrade releases.

@whoiswes If you are talking about the xdrip app. I too want this app to work with this phone. I tried CM13 and had the app work for hours then at night it stopped working. I only tried it for one night so didn't try different settings. At least this is a positive sign once CM13 becomes more stable or CM14 is released. I heard the app won't work with B27 either.
Found a solution, though it needs root
Code:
pm disable com.zte.powersavemode
then reboot
This totally disables the power saving menu though

I made this xposed module specifically to fix the problem described in OP. If you have the exact problem, including the logcat message, then the module should fix it.
If you dont have the exact problem, including the logcat mesage, then go ****post in another thread.
My solution is to whitelist all apps in:
settings -> energy management -> app energy management -> option button (upper right) -> app protection list -> option button -> set all to off
But the problem is that this setting resets everytime you install/delete an app
Edit: Ok i just tried out manually setting all apps to "off", now it doesn't reset the apps when installing an app but the new app ist automatically allowed to be cleaned. So you still have to disallow cleaning for each installed app manually.
Just an FYI, I updated to the Cyanogenmod/Lineage 13 Beta by UDev and one of my problem apps has been running for 18 hours without a single hiccup. Trying the second problem app later today. Not a solution for this problem but from my perspective it definitely pinpoints Power Manager as the culprit.
@borijess - yeah, Nightwatch and xDrip are the 2 apps that I've had trouble with, and so far Nightwatch is working great on CM13 (1228 build).

Hou can I make Android 6.0's doze feature not suck that much?

Hi,
I really don't understand how the doze system works on android marshmallow. I mean, it kills apps that I need, and leaves on apps that I need killed. I have done all the battery optimization exceptions from settings->apps, I have excluded and included in the keep alive after screen lock option in battery manager, nothing is working how it should be.
I want apps like Tasker and Automate It to work when i close the screen, but even if I exclude them from all things that could kill them, they work for only about 2 minutes and then bye bye.
Is there a setting I missed, or maybe an app that keeps them alive, or maybe some root underground terminal emulator magic I can do to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance.

It's not Doze that sucks so much, it's EMUI's power management. It's overly aggressive in killing apps.

You're probably right, even though they fixed this in EMUI 5.0, but I don't like Nougat because it has an annoying bug, so maybe there's a fix to this for MM. I'll try to write to them too.

At random times, my screen won't turn on when I unlock it. I can hear the unlock sound, receive phone calls and probably use all other phone functions, but my screen stays black. I have to force-restart the phone in order for the screen to work again. It probably is a problem with my phone, but I'm too lazy to send it to warranty.
