Hi guys,
Nothing big here, just thought I'd share my experience with Samsung's plastic build quality.
So long story short: I've always kept my phone in a case, until I bought the 2000mah extended battery pack for about a month ago (the mesh case don't fit with the new battery cover). Also, I ALWAYS keep my phone alone in my pocket. It hasn't even touched harder stuff than denim as I'm very careful with it. The disappointment was therefore big when I noticed that the chrome on the screen bezel had a dent some days ago. This small dent has now started growing bigger and bigger, and I must say I'm really disappointed with the finish on this product. When you buy a high-end device and treat it even better than recommended by Samsung, it should last longer than 5 months before the chrome painting starts falling off. I've now sent a complaint to my carrier, so we'll see how that goes. Check out the attached picture to get a glimpse of the black plastic beneath the chrome paint.
I've had my phone since release and have had it with no case since. I've dropped it numerous times and barely have any marks around the phone. That's weird the phone has faded/chipped like that.

Somebody else posted yesterday about some of the chrome on the bezel coming off as well, see link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291118
I also have this problem but it doesn't disturb me that much.
Too bad it already has signs of wear after 3 months
Chrome rubbed off on the same corner. Now that I have a cover it doesn't bother me so much...
Like a lot of people I'm suddenly debating an edge but I'm worried about losing a rim of aluminum or plastic around the screen. I don't do cases and do drop my phone on concrete around twice a year but have never broken anything, am I right in guessing that edge screens lose a lot of durability without a case?
Dropped mine twice, both times onto my Kitchen floor (stone). Not even a scratch, much to my surprise.
Haven't found a case I like yet, and I'm insured, but will eventually get a flip cover I think.
drop it in the toliet 2 times on wooden floor, looks the same as before when i buy it.
That's sweet to hear, thanks!
Dropped my on kitchen floor yesterday thankfully not a mark on it !!
I've had mine for over 2 months, and it's in mint condition. You learn early on that the thing is a bit of a tank, but still manages to be well-manufactured with a premium feel. I've had a few drops thag were hard to look at, but a spray-adhesive screen protector and a flimsy TPU case bought online have protected the phone from any cracks or scratches.
i watched a drop test on youtube of this phone a while back vs an iphone, and although ymmv compared to the video, it did seem like the S6 was pretty tough, it took dropping the phone from around 10feet high before the glass smashed on back or front! I was very impressed.
I want to also highlight how I've gone without a case for the few months I've had this phone, and there isn't one scratch to be seen! Yes it is a fingerprint magnet, but I seriously thought that the back of the phone would look awful pretty quickly, but it's just pristine!
Dropped mine again in the kitchen again no damage thankfully.

My phone is cracked to **** - top right corner, middle of screen and on rear! I may need to rethink a glass phone next time lol

Without a good case; this thing is so painful to hands, i mean sharp rear lines. After a long surfing on the hand, it is giving cramp. [emoji51]
And sending an another post. Why?
Because I can..
Yes I dropped mine onto a beer can on the floor which still had some beer in it, this made sure the can did not move. The result of the 3ft fall? the pixels at the impact point are completely knackered, so will need to claim on the insurance when it comes to selling it for the Note 6, as I imagine the phone is probably a write off as it is the screen as well as the glass. Not sure I think much of this Gorilla Glass!
I owned the xperia z and z3 and never managed to crack these once. On the three occasions I dropped my s6e+ it resulted in damage. Why buy an expensive beautiful glass phone to put it in a plastic case?
yep yesterday camera len broken. looks like a right pain to do and looks like camera its self looks damaged too.

I was in the office, my Note 5 was on the desk. Was getting up and knocked my phone and it dropped to the office-carpeted floor on its back. Didn't think much, I picked it up and went to do my thing. Came back to my desk, then felt like checking something on the phone, fingerprint unlocked, fine, then I found a tiny 1 cm (0.3 inch) crack on the top left corner of the AMOLED screen. I was like wtf?? I'm using a Spigen hybrid case with tempered glass screen protector... it fell 2 feet from the desk on the carpet floor... and it bloody cracked the screen??
After getting really annoyed at what I saw, thought I start looking for the thing I was after on my phone.... but what's this.... I swiped and I swiped but it's not responding.... touch sense has died on the screen.... wtf???? 2 foot drop??? After a minute of being furious, I had an idea of trying if the stylus still worked... and it still does. So the touch layer has died but the digitiser layer is still working... sigh. After 10 mins of being angry, I just put the phone back to sleep and back to work.
30 mins later I went to check my phone again.... and what did I find? My AMOLED screen slowly bleeds purple blood from the sides (not from the crack itself) and purple spots like bruises all over the screen. Omgwtf??? 2 foot droooop come ooooon! And after a day, you can see what my screen looks like now on the attached picture.
I've never seen anyone having 3 different failures from a phone drop.... felt extremely unlucky. I have treated my Note 5 super carefully, although that was the third drop (never more than 3-foot drop) since I purchased it 4.5 months ago from Dubai. I live in UK, so there's no chance of the components being available here since it was never released in Europe. This is the first time I ever broke a phone.... and from a slight drop as well.
Take extra care of your Note 5... it's very fragile...
That's gutting. I switched last month to the note 5 cos I dropped my Nexus 6 off the office desk onto carpeted floor and the screen cracked. Guess side effect of such great designs
It's amazing how fragile things are now days. I dropped an sd card on the carpet once from waist height. Killed it. Lmao
Must of seen at least 50 phones broken in the reception of my old work. People would accidentally drop em or knock them of the counter as they were about to leave and smashed everytime.
For a device that is meant to be carried everywhere they sure are easy to kill.
Why make them.sturdy when they can make another $1000 by selling them a replacement...

my note 5 fell from 5 feet and nothing happened. it was without screen protector. you have bad luck.
It's unfortunate that this happened. Next time spend the extra cash and get a Otter Box defender. It's not the fact the phone dropped but how it hit once it dropped. My guess is, it dropped directly on the corner.

Yeah, well worth the money for a decent case. I got blind rotten drunk and dropped my s6 on the concrete numerous times without damage to the phone and just a few chunks of plastic gone from the case.

I've dropped my note 5 about five times onto hardwood flooring and never had anything happen more than the SPen going for a wander. My friend was skateboarding with his n9200 and he dropped it, poor device went flying face down on the pavement the same day he decided to remove his glass screen protector becaise it was cracked. Bad luck.
I always get insurance with my phone. Worth the 9 bucks a month. Go to the store, ask for replacement, new one is at my door the next day.
ON a side note, my note 5 flew out of my hand and slapped the corner of my closet and the zagg shield shattered but the rest of the phone is golden.
Another problem with lcd glass
In the upper left corner there is an air bubble inside the lcd glass.
it dropped from 2- 3 feet height with silicon cover on it.
here the pictures
Silicone covers are worthless and make the phone look crap. Better to get a minimal hard case
That's how amoled screens work. If you crack an LCD, everytime you turn it on back again you will see the cracks but the screen will still be backlighted. But, since every single led is individually backlighted in amoled screens, if you turn off the screen and turn it on again there's a 90% of chances that the screen will not turn on again. It will start bleeding purple or green colors and flashing straight lines all over the screen until it finally dies. The screen slowly and painfully agonizes until it's dead. Time to get a new Glass + Screen replacement my friend...

This, they could protect you from scratches but they will never save you from a screen crack. Same goes for the tempered glass.
Probably worth remembering that even though stuff does happen, the Note 5 is basically a "glass" object.
Treat it as such.
My note 5 fell more than 5 times on the street and not on the its back but on the screen, everytime i picked it up i was ready to see a big crack! But never was!! And i don't even use a screen protector, just samsung view cover case, i guess it's a bad luck for u my friend.

Silicone cases dont make anything look like crap unless the color or design on it looks like crap. They actually should give u slightly better shock absorption than a hard plastic case. Otterboxes are unusable to me because of the bulk it adds. I prefer slimmer cases and mainly silicone or rubbery. U just were having bad luck.

Sady it will be slowly and painfully agonizing for the owner too :crying:
Jokes aside,
The bigger the size of the screen, the easier the glass can resonate-flex when hitting the ground and knock-bend in the AMOLED, without cracking the glass outside. Interesting that the tempered glass protector didn't save it.
Freak accident, indeed
I would buy a screen from ebay, they're 200 bucks, and I'd find a mobile service place who fixes S6 screens in your area and ask them if they could do the swap.

Well, don't ask me how but my Note 4 screen stopped working when I took it out of my pocket like a year ago. I've sent it for repair and the guy told me that the screen was all shattered by the inside but the glass was brand new. Also they werent signs of bending or a certain sharp point that caused the screen failure. I still have the photo of the old screen. As you can see the glass was fine, but the screen was broken from inside (look at the left edge). Even there's dirt inside the screen!
That sucks for sure, hopefully you can get it fixed without too much trouble.
However since it seems you have the dropsies (3 drops in 4.5 months is a lot) I would do as the others suggest and get a rock solid case for it to prevent future issues.
I've had mine over 6mos and haven't dropped it once. Fingers crossed that trend continues lol

Help me out here bro's .. for a whole week i have watched hundreds of reviews and drop tests etc , i like the S7 Edge but i am terrified of that glass screen on the front side cracking by itself without drops acording to many people on the web, i normally use cases on all my phones but with this model i'm afraid that its edge will be easy to crack if dropped in a certain position with a case , it is not a cheap phone and if i pay this much i want to be sure that is a bit tough and won't have to be in service centers a hundred times , what are your experiences with it , i am stressing between S7 Edge and the HTC 10 full metal body and its resistance Thanks.
I had same hesitations as you have even with a spigen tough armor case. I have broken a S6 edge plus in past and vowed not to buy a edge phone. Stayed long time with My Note4, the longest phone i have ever kept for 2 years.
S7 Edge is fragile. and if u are not careful yes you will break the screen if u have fumbling hands like me. I have bought a Otterbox Defender case for my s7 edge. it looks bigger, feels heavy, touch might not be as smooth as one without a case
The best reason for otterbox defender was built in screen protector, its not glass mind you but work fine. I dropped my phone from around 4ft height but not even a single scratch on the case or phone...
That is the only case i use most of the time , although i have 4 more like Spigen Tough Armor, and the Original flip cover, but im not a fan of flipcovers, not my taste. I also have Samsung Accidental Warranty replacment for screen 1 time if i break it
The warranty plus the otterbox for me was the only combo that makes me feel safe.
Many would disagree and say they think its best not to use screen protector and have the best of edge screen. But a little compromise makes me feel comfortable to throw around my phone on table , in car , on bed etc without worrying that i might break it.
So in the end other cases can give u Semi type protection. but be careful as if it falls on floor u will surely damage the phone... I have no regrets . amazing phone , killer camera and screen on time. i get around 6 to 7 hours screen on time mostly
Dropped my phone multiple times from different heights. Thank God UAG saves my phone.

So far not even a scratch on my s7 edge. Even after like 2-3 drops maybe. It is a really durable phone. Everything is nice and solid. Best phone I had so far. Even Note 4 had a unbreakable glass, as well as Galaxy S6. But S7 Edge has the best glass out of them all.
i have been using a Spigen Crystal Shell on my S7 edge since day 1. Brilliant protection. Haven't dropped the phone thankfully yet but the crystal shell has these air cushion bumps that are pronounced on all 4 corners.
i have mine in a vrsdesign case, got it from amazon for under £10, and with my job im constantly climbing in /out on top and under machines, and mines hasnt broke i think theyre more durable than people think, just look after it properly, too many people are careless with devices these days

I'll close it, and leave this one open. But I will also move this one to Q&A.
As for the screen glass, it doesn't crack on it's own. It never has, and never will.
If you worry about that, you may as well not buy any phone in case it smashes.
I've never had a screen protector or case on any of my flagship smartphones, for the last 10 years or so, and never had a smashed screen.
I've even dropped my S7E a few times onto concrete, and barely left a mark.
Mine broke on its own. but don't worry, its only $260 to replace it by samsuck and it will no longer be water resistant.
On it's own?
Sorry but I just can't see how that would ever happen with Gorilla Glass 4.
My S7 Edge Lens cover broke on its own. And the display cracked on the edge recently. Still working perfectly as the shattered pieces are held together by the ScreenGuard - Best ScreenGuard by GadgetzShield.
They don't break in their own unless you put pressure on the screens or your phone is faulty and overheating. Does mine a few times with a Spigen case and it's all good. Maybe there are imperfections in the glass as edge screens are not perfectly flat and hard to make. Each one is unique.
Sent from my SM-G935F using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yes. The Display edge cracked on fall. The camera lens cover is fragile.
It is doubtful that you need another person telling you that the phone is worthwhile, but I'm going to anyway
As mentioned previously, Gorilla Glass 4 is very durable. NO phone is meant to be dropped without consequence, save for maybe the "Active" series. That said, I just received my Spigen Neo Hybrid Crystal case, and I threw on a Skinomi tech skin (for cases, not full coverage).
I too watched a ton of videos, looked at a lot of case reviews, etc. Many of which showed shattered backs, cracks, etc. I'm extremely careful with my devices because I believe in only buying them once. I'm not careless enough to drop my phone from 20 feet, or something ridiculous like that. If you are a normal person, who takes care of their electronics, the demise of this phone need not be feared.
I have a s7 edge and my only concern is that at some point Samsung will decide that it will not update the software any more or bring software features which will come to the newer devices. The hardware is great. The update policy is bad and it makes you feel like you have an old device even if the hardware is perfectly fine.

Anyone else have very faint surface scratches on the back of their phone? No idea how I got them on this supposedly sturdy phone, but they are there. The phone has been on microfiber resting at all times.
My question is this, anyone think we can polish the back to get light scratches out?
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
I have this same thing going on, day 3 with the device. They're not that noticable but I know they're there and that's what bugs me. Somewhere I read said it could be scratches in oleophobic coating... IDK. JerryRigEverythings scratch test didn't show any markings until around 8 on the hardness scale.

Yea I saw the video. That's what has me annoyed. Essentials talk of durability is well documented. Add that to the fact that no cases are readily available means you kinda need to just put up with whatever happens. I'm wondering if we can just use a mild polish on the back to alleviate any minor scratches. Mine are almost invisible, but I their presence at all on a phone I baby, bothers me.
I think baking soda and water would do the trick.

I began to see fine scratches on the back of mine within days. I carry it in my front pocket with nothing else. I'm not aware of any rough treatment at all. I feel disappointed as well.
Same problem here ,another thing to be disappointed besides the Camera.
Same here
I was getting some as well. Try the polish out and see if it works? I don't think anyones tried it yet. Also if you don't mind covering the back you can always throw a skin on it. Also makes the phone a lot less slippery
I had quite a few on my first unit. My replacement unit I have none so far but I put a dbrand skin on it the minute I took it out of the box. My first one also had some scratches in the titanium near the charging port and a nick on the side that came from who knows what.

I also have fine scratches on the back of mine, with scratches near the USB c port. I also have a replacement supposedly on the way, but for freezing & random reboot issues. What did they replace your phone for? How long did it take for you to get the replacement?
Mine was for bad light bleed and the coating on the titanium coming off. Now I have to exchange again because the one they sent me has no speaker grille.
They sent the replacement next day air after they called to confirm. I had already sent my defective device in. This was before they started doing advanced replacement.
I wish you hadn't said anything.. I have them too
Maybe they could be polished out, but if it scratches this easily they are destined to return.
The phone is not supposed to be scratch proof. I'll be surprised if they'll take your phone back just because of slight scratched. Put it in a sleeve to install vinyl backing for peace of mind.
Mine had scratches from day one... lol Just placed my replacement order yesterday but I don't expect to get it anytime soon. Phone is off and collecting dust til I get the box to return it. They stated they wouldn't have any new devices (hopefully ones w/o much of the hardware issues like the speaker grille) in stock until this week when they emailed me last week.
I ended up getting a replacement from essential and placing a skin on the back to protect from getting these fine scratches. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, I miss the shiny back but I like not having scratches and finger prints all over the back. Wahoo!

Had mine for over six weeks, and no scratches here.
I have a ton of scratches near the camera and magnet ports. No idea how they got there since I carry my phone in my pocket with nothing else in it. The only thing I could think of would be resting it on it's back on a table and sliding it to pick it up? Odd how it is only around the top part. Fingerprint sensor and below is spotless.

Close to that area are the magnets, magnets attract metal and sand, sand is one of the few things that can scratch glass and ceramic. Sometimes even if we believe or not we have sand in our packets due to daily life. Then we have scratches without knowing where we scratched.
Sent from my SM-N950U1 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I don't understand people complaining about micro scratches like it's something wrong with the phone? If you live in a place that has sand then you should have some type of protection on your device if you don't want scratches. Sand (silica) is harder than any coating and will scratch any phone. It also can become ubiquitous. One of the persons here literally has a user pic with them on the beach! Why make it Essentials fault when your failure to protect your phone is the issue?
I got my scratches at my corporate office in my cube. Nowhere near beach or anything of that sort. Was just playing with it and setting it up. Anyone who's not using any protection on the back and have been using it regularly saying they don't have any scratches, please share a close up video of your phone's back in nice HD detail close up so we can be in awe of your magical device with no scratches. Be sure to move it around under a bright light too. Lol. Be real people, you're gonna get scratches without a protection, whether it's a skin, case or whatever.
