Is there any way to load TWRP on a non-rooted 6P, without a PC/cable? I left my only USB-C cable at work. Back in the day you used to be able to create a .zip that would automatically be picked up by fastboot/HBOOT, but not sure if that's possible anymore. I tried searching for this answer for a while so I apologize if it's already been posted.

I don't think so. You either need a PC with a cable to do it through fastboot, or route so you can use an app like Flashify to do it

Root usually has nothing to do with being able to flash TWRP, all you need is an unlocked bootloader. But, there are apps like Flashify and Flashfire that can flash TWRP directly from the phone, these apps do require root though.

Hi,
I'm expecting my Nexus 4 some time this week and I'd like a little help.
I have a htc one x at the moment. A while after I got it, I decided to unlock it and use custom rom etc.
With the nexus 4, I just want to root it without disrupting anything if possible. The one thing I don't want to mess up is getting the Ota updates as I couldn't get that to work again on my one x.
So to summarise, I want to root my Nexus 4 whilst retaining the ability to get Ota updates and full functionality as normal. Can anyone help?
You'll need adb/fastboot + the appropriate drivers.
-unlock BL via fastboot,
-flash recovery via fastboot,
-flash SU zip via recovery,
-leave BL unlocked, no reason to relock it.
That's it. Don't remove, or rename any system apps if you want the OTA to apply. You can even flash OTA's via a custom recovery, this will likely be available here prior to you getting a notification.
Good info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
So there is no way to root the device without unlocking the bootloader and flashing the custom recovery?
I'm basically in the same boat. I'm developing android apps and want to use log reading apps but I don't want to have any custom rom/recovery on the phone.

You know when you are on other phones, you are actually unlocking the bootloader via a exploit or through the manufacturers developer center.
You need a custom recovery in order to obtain root. It is a must need, without it you cannot be rooted.
Only way to change your recovery is to unlock the bootloader. Having a locked bootloader locks it so your recovery can't be changed. So.... You get the idea

You can do it via adb with an insecure boot image, outlined here below the CWM method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993331&highlight=insecure
If you do it the CWM, or TWRP way you can flash the stock recovery again. You absolutely have to unlock the bootloader however, no way around that.
CF Root is another option: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025274
i just want to make sure you know that if by some circumstance you lose ota that you can always just download the zip of the update here and flash in recovery. there really is no reason for ota that i can see on a nexus device. its here as soon as its released pretty much.

Convenience? With CWM it even patches on first boot so you don't lose root or anything so I like being able to do OTA (well the one update so far) vs. having to connect to my desktop.

no reason to connect to desktop if you have recovery. you can come here on your phone or 'chrome to phone' it over. find the thread. click the download link. then reboot in recovery and flash.

I also could drop it into dropbox but that is all more work than just hitting "install" on my phone, it isn't like updates are released with enough frequency that the amount of work matters but like I said OTA is more convenient for me and CWM made it even more convenient. The OP may have completely different reasons for wanting OTA.

i think you must have missed that part in bold. no reason to be a smart a$$ either when you are the one who didnt know there is no reason to connect to desktop.
remember... the whole reason for this thread in the first place is because the op lost ota on his last phone by rooting it. all i did was try to let him feel at ease.

Just use the nexus 4 toolkit, follow it's directions/steps - Can't get any easier or less impact than that. Install Drivers, unlock bootloader and root. Done. OTA still work, install busybox from the play store if needed.

I wasn't being a smart ass nor was I unaware of other ways to get an OTA update, you said there was no reason for OTA on a nexus device and I responded why someone would want it.

Don't use toolkits take the time and learn how to do it yourself so if you get into situations where you messed something up you know how to fix it as you know how adb and fast boot will work.
Toolkits are not worth the short cut

Can I just unlock the bootloader, fastboot boot not flash cwn and install root from there.
Also, how does unlocking bootloader affect warranty?

This is the best way to do it. Yes you can fastboot boot cwm so it'll be temp and just install supersu zip. Regarding warranty for bootloader, it originally came locked so should you need to return it, warranty will be voided if you unlock it. However, it would really be just fastboot oem lock if you need to relock it. The state won't show relocked if you do it. It'll be plain locked

First I have been to and searched every post and site I can find to turn this thing around, with no success. Sent several emails.
Took a rooted New Nexus 7 that had been restored back because it froze/did not respond. Got a new N7, unlocked bootloader and installed TWRP using Terminal (Mac) booted into recovery (TWRP) it said you are not rooted, install SU by swiping below. I swiped and tried to reboot and it stops at X. I have wiped, reinstalled TWRP and used a One Click Toolkit to Root. no success. Not really sure what I did wrong.....given I have always trusted TWRP.
Anyway... have unlocked bootloader, TWRP installed and cannot get Android File Transfer to recognize device. Welcome help or suggestions.
Thank you in advance.
David
Same thing happened to me. Don't listen to TWRP about SU. You'll need to do it manually for it to be successful. Follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381582. This won't relock your bootloader. You just need to root it by flashing the SU zip found on one if the "How to root" threads.

Yeah, youre correct, you have to manually flash twrp. I would suggest running the utility to make youre device boot again, then make sure you have the LATEST twrp, then reboot and flash COMPATIBLE SU and you should be golden. Im not sure about macs though but you should deff be goin the right way.
Thank you, I used that site the last time I got into trouble. Do you or anyone know of a Mac site that will get me out of this rut. I won't have access to a PC for a few days and am anxious to set this tablet up.
Thank you for response,
David

If you were able to install using a Mac, then you should have no troubles setting things up again. Avoid toolkits if you can, especially during the early days where things are buggy.
If you put your tablet into fastboot though, you can get started by going ahead and running fastboot -w and then flashing the stock recovery images back on. Sure, you won't have root, but I've found that 1) root doesn't take super nicely unless you're already signed into the tablet anyway, and 2) regardless of 1), once your bootloader is unlocked you might as well get set up and then root afterwards.
Mine did the same thing. What I did to fix was:
1. Go into recovery and format data in the wipe menu.
2. Then factory reset.
3. Restart os.
This was posted by decksy post #11 in tutorial for unlock, recovery, and root thread so if it works thank him.

Hi my computer has died. MY boot is unlocked. In the past I've rooted galaxy phones without a computer, using a file app. Is it possible to finish my N4 this way? I'd hate to buy a new laptop just to root one phone
Sent by mobile telephone.
U dont need to buy a new one, just use one of ur friends, thats the easiest way.
A lot of the older phones needed to be rooted using an exploit, and thus people made applications that could root it from within the system. Since the Nexus phones are so easy to root without any exploits, all of the toolkits that are created are just using the ADB and Fastboot commands to flash a custom recovery and root the phone.
If you were rooted but didn't have a custom recovery, that would be simple to fix. If you had a custom recovery and needed root, that would be simple to fix. But with neither, I think you're going to need a computer.
You need a computer, OR another device that supports OTG and has a fastboot binary installed.

Actually, I think there's a kernel somewhere here that you can flash and it will root the device simultaneously. I'll try to look for it and see if it's something you can use. Cheers.

That's not the problem... the problem here would be flashing the kernel.

My Nexus 7 (2012), with broken usb port, lost root while updating but the bootloader is still unlocked. Also, I have no recovery on it and have been unable to flash a new one so far.
Is there any way to salvage root via terminal or am I SOL? I've searched the forum but haven't been able to find anything that specifically applies to my situation. Help?
P.S. I'm charging it via the dock, thanks for asking

I think you're SOL - Every which way I think about this... It always comes down to having a working USB connection.
Hi, ndhusn....
I've been thinking about your situation all day... and I can't think of anything that would work.
The "traditional" way of rooting the Nexus 7 is...
** fastboot flash a custom Recovery (CWM or TWRP)...
** Using that Custom Recovery, flash Chainfire's SuperSU root package.
But with a knackered USB port, you obviously can't fastboot flash anything.
Looking into alternative options... there is something called CF-autoroot...
http://autoroot.chainfire.eu
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025272
I've never used this means of rooting myself... but it has been mentioned several times on this forum. It's chief advantage, it seems, is it doesn't require the fastboot flashing of a Custom Recovery first.... so I thought this might work for you. But upon closer examination, it appears you still have to hook up your Nexus 7 to a PC via USB in order to run it.
--------------------------------------
Without CWM or TWRP installed, I can't think of any way of rooting your Nexus 7.
The irony here is... that there IS A WAY of flashing a Custom Recovery without recourse to fastboot (and the need for a USB connection) using the Flashify app. But you need root to do it. You can even flash a Custom Recovery via a terminal shell, with...
Code:
$ su
# dd if=/sdcard/recovery-image-file.img of=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/SOS
...but as you can see from the initial su command, root already needs to be available.
You're stuck in a 'chicken and egg' situation! You can't root without a Custom Recovery... and you can't install a Custom Recovery without root.
--------------------------------------
Even a 'root exploit' requires a USB connection... like the old 'motochopper exploit' which would root the Nexus 7 even with a LOCKED bootloader. Anyway, that 'exploit' now no longer works, since Google 'blocked' such exploits as of Jellybean 4.3 onwards.
--------------------------------------
ndhusn said:

If the USB port is that damaged, such that you have to use the dock to charge, then presumably this precludes the possibility of trying another, different USB cable... with the intent of fastboot flashing TWRP or CWM.
Sometimes, it's just the USB cable at fault... and not the USB port itself. Anyway, just a thought.
--------------------------------------
I'm sorry to say, that without a working USB port on your Nexus 7, I don't think you'll be able to root it... or at least, I can't think of anyway of doing so.
Rgrds,
Ged.
*** Edit & addendum - WARNING ***
Whilst tinkering around with various methods in order to acquire root, will likely not hardbrick your Nexus 7... but they may cause softbrick/bootloop situations.
Normally, these are relatively trivial to resolve... but in your situation, they could be permanent.
Without a Nandroid backup created with a Custom Recovery, you won't be able to restore back to a previously known 'good' version of Android.
And without a working USB port, you won't be able to fastboot flash a Google factory image.
So... tread carefully.
Better a working Nexus 7 without root, then a Nexus 7 perpetually locked in a bootloop. It's unlikely, but be aware that you're recovery options are limited.
Needs be as needs must...
I have a broken port also! Low quality parts.
Cheapest replacement I have found is here....

Not to be rude, when you ask these kind of questions, you need to read more by searching.
1- confection to ? has nothing to do with root whatsoever. Troubleshooting that would be great start. By insuring drivers.
2-no root without pc. Odin is safest bet instead of trying other apps or methods outside xda. Not taking the warranty in mind here.
3-you can't use stock recovery for anything that is called useful. No you can't flash roms with it, nor flash supersu.
4-twrp is a great recovery that you need and should use. It's easy and does what it should.
You can't root without ?.

You could use an app in play store to flash twrp but again you need root. Root requires ? as far as I know.
What ? du you have? Only one USB port? Ask a friend or family to borrow their ?. Takes only 10 min.
Pc isn't a problem. My note can connect to pc. I see malfunction note when I connect to pc. Windows don't recognise this phone. I'm sure it isn't drivers problem because every other phone is OK with my pc.
