Bluetooth call volume too LOUD - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Bluetooth in call volume is way too loud even at minimum volume setting. Anything higher than a minimum is deafening.
It only happens with bluetooth and only in-call. Music and everything else is fine. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Yes - I have the same problem, but with headphones, not bluetooth. NO idea how to fix.

I had the same issue when I got my new s7. I was using it with several Plantronics m165's and they were all too loud to the point they hurt. I took it to the Samsung booth at Best Buy and they couldn't fix it. So I bought 14 different bluetooths and tried every single one of them to find the quietest one. The Jabra Steel and Plantronics 5200 series were the quietest. I stuck with the Plantronics model since it had the best connection.
Hope this works for you. I'm still adjusting to the bulkiness of this new headset but it is the only way to avoid hearing damage
Note: Best Buy likes to rename most products to make it seem like they have it exclusively. At Best Buy, the 5200 series is named 5220.

Same problem here after update lollipop 5.0.2 on Galaxy Alpha, also use Plantronics. Cant find any solution.

I decided to buy one of these. I've had it almost a week and I really like it.
The thing I like most about it, is that you can use any headphones that have the miniplug on them.
The headphones it comes with are really good though. It's plenty loud and I can get about 8 hours of play out of it, but I don't think my battery is done being exercised. It's still new.
The sound quality is AMAZING. When I listened to my first song, the first thing I said was "Wow!".
I use it all the time at work to listen to music and not disturb others. After an 8 hour shift (using it most of the time), I still have an hour or so I can use when I get home.
Pairing it was easy and when I turn the headset on, it connects to my Kaiser within 2 seconds. The only thing that annoys me, is that after a phone call - for some reason the bluetooth will disconnect. I have to press the play/pause button to get it to connect again.
Other than that, I consider it one of the best things I've purchased this year. I would recommend it to anyone that wants an A2DP bluetooth stereo headset.
The only thing I wish it had, was the ability to change tracks/songs. Other than that, it's totally perfect. I can wander all over my house and it still gets good reception. There is absolutely no hiss or static. It either plays totally clear or it cuts out entirely. It immediately picks back up when you're back in range of the signal.
I second that. One of the best BT stereo headset.

The only bad thing is bad UI for volume adjustment, and no FF/RW button.

The DS-220 is outdated now. The new DS-205 comes w/ an extra button for Volume control and FF/RW.
does the DS 220 or 205 use USB mini to charge?
i have the ds 220, the sound quality is excelent and its plug and play.
the only thing is that the volume of the headset is VERY low...

No, it use the same adapter as Sony's phone. The only improvement I want for DS205 is feature on it's 970/980 series like multiple devices handling and lcd screen for caller id. (Too bad those series don't use clip and does not have 3.5mm adapter)
Hi, I have some questions after reading the commentare from other users above.
On the SE site I can read that this headset uses AVRCP, what should say you could manage the tracks (FF/RW etc.) But you all say it is not possible, why is this? Is this another version?
I'm dubbing about buying a (new) stereo bluetooth headset after my Philips SHB7102/00 was broken. I like all the features it had and want something comparable now.
The cons of the HBH-DS9xx are for me that the headphones aren't replaceable.
But I also would like to have in-ear headphones (for in the train e.g.).
Besides this one, can you recommend other headset? I hardly couldn't find any.
Battery-life is also important for me btw. It has to last at least for 6 hours, but I prefer at least 8...

I have a Jabra BT620s, which is also A2DP. It is total crap. I would look at a different brand. Motorola headsets are supposed to work well.

I have the 8010 and it with all due respect to the previous poster, it works great. I have used it with the original shipped ROM and several cooked ROMS (Currently on Sleuth's 6.1 ver 3) and it worked well with all of them. I will say it seems to work the best (longer distance from the PPC) with the radio included in Sleuth's 6.1
Can either of you provide more specific information about the issues you had with it? I've never had a bluetooth headset before so I might not even notice.
My BT620s sounded like a bad record. The pitch kept shifting very subtly, but it is INSANELY annoying and makes it completely un-listenable. Also, it would drop audio for about 5 seconds of every minute, which is very annoying. It had trouble with pairing, when you turned it off, it would sometimes refuse to re-connect to the phone. The call quality with it was OK though. I sold mine and bought a pair of Motorolas.
i have the bt8010 (only for a week) and the head set is pretty good
i have had the headset cut out on me i think there is interference from the cell or wifi. but it doesn't happen all the time. the battery life is good i have played at least 9 hours of music (stereo) straight before it need a charge. the sound quality is ok, there is some distortion on the extreme high and low notes.
but it is wireless
the headset need to be angled in a upward angle in order to be conformable (at least for me) i was able to were it for 3 hours with out a problem
the cord between the ears some times get pulled by twisting my neck, it's about 1 inch too long
i have used it in a noisy production floor and the person on the other side head me fine, a little downed out but they didn't hear the hum of the loud machine in the background and because i had the stereo on i head him better then on my phone, and yes you do hear the person on both right and left sides.
i was going to get a Motorola (mono) one but i got this one because the talk time and standby life is longer (according to specs) and this one has stereo option.
this is the only headset that you could switch from work to play
i am happy with it, and other around me like it.
btw i got mine refurbished.
I have the BT8010. I've had it for about 7 to 8 months now, maybe longer.
I really do not like the headset at all. It has great sound so don't get me wrong. If sound is all you are interested in then go for it. But if you are looking for fit or the ear loops to stay on then they aren't the ones.
For me, the fit for me is horrible and the headset hurts because I have small ears.
SECOND and this is the BIGGEST LET DOWN, the ear loops keep falling out.
So if you get it go ahead and call and order some extras right away. You can contact them via phone I think and they will send you a few. Just keep one in your wallet and one in the car and some @ home, and some in your briefcase.
The ear loops fall out way too easy for my tastes. I'm currently looking for another set of A2DB enabled headsets.
I use it for some 4 month. Mostly monoaural. It's ok, but...
Pros: VERY good sound quality (noise reduction, environment supression), good battery lifetime (up to 3 days), clear display, handy controls.
Cons: the ear hanger (? sorry for my english) slips out from the unit causing unit to fall, fast dial numbers are too short (cannot add cell codes e.g. enabling my phone number identification before dial number), does not fit perfectly into the ear - the sound is good when I puch it with my finger toward my ear, but listening to the music is a bit painful (not full spectrum due to distance between speaker and ear-hole that cannot be, at least in my case, adjusted).
Overall: good design/performance. Better quality then BT800 (my previous earphone). Cannot be securely and properly adjusted toward ear.

I use the 8010. The only complaint I had was the ear hook kept falling out, like the poster above. What I did was to superglue the hook in. Now, it doesn't fall, and it fit tighter to the ear, making it better to hear conversations and music. I lost one of the hooks before, and when I called jabra to order another set of hooks, they sent me out a Free pair, no ? asked, so support is great. Now, you can find the headset at a very good price. I paid $100 for mines, you can find them for $40-60.

I also have problems with the ear loop falling out. But it's not that often.
What I find annoying is that it doesn't automatically connect to my HTC prophet as stereo headphones when I switch the Jabra to music mode. I have to manually go into bluetooth settings and click on Jabra BT8010 to set as stereo headphones. Does anyone have a fix for this? If I don't do the above steps, AVRCP is able to work, but music will still come out of the phone. It would be nice if I can just listen to music with a push of the mode button without having to fumble for my phone.

the only problem ive actually had is like everyone else has mentioned...the ear loop comming off..but thats so small in comparison to what they have to offer.

the best bluetooth I know so far is Itech. They don't sell here but you can find it on ebay. A2DP, bluetooth stereo, cliping on you cloth, looks like a ipod shuttle on you collar.

[Q] Phone call quality on headset

Does anyone actually use the phone as a phone? I'm finding that the echo cancel really limits the quality of the phone. I can hardly carry on a decent conversation in the car using the supplied headset.

Try this: connect the headset. Call your phone from another phone. Listen to both at the same time. You can clearly hear when you talk that the phone is suppressing noise.
What I find is that when I'm in the car, it actually seems to suppress the volume of the person on the other end! So, it can be very frustrating as I miss words that they say.
Combine this with AT&T's marvelous AGC (where if you don't talk, it cranks the volume so that when you do talk, it blows the person on the other end away!), and the total quality of the call is horrible.
I've been using cell phones for almost 20 years. This is the worst phone quality I've ever experience.
When I use the phone directly for calls, everything sounds clear and at a consistent volume with one exception, while waiting for the other party to answer, the call ringing tone goes up and down in volume.
I've paired 3 different bluetooth headsets to the phone and found that the volume in my headset goes up and down quite a bit. Usually it's the worst at the beginning of the call. Sometimes I can't hear the other person answer but then it levels out a bit and the volume fluctuations are less extreme. I've tried an old Sony Ericsson, a Jabra Extreme, and have settled on a Plantronics Voyager Pro+. The Voyager is about the best I've tried but still exhibits the volume fluctuations but not as bad. It also supports A2DP so I can listen to podcasts through the headset.
I use it with the Sync system in my ford f150 and have no problems at all. It works great. I dont use headsets so..........only my sync system
I thought it was just me. My Plantronics 925 does this as well. Calls from the phone are fine, but the headset volume cuts in and out. Is this a bad Bluetooth stack or other problem? I think I remember another phone (WM 6.5) that had to get hacked to fix this. I'm a little miffed on this. Did anyone at Samsung or ATT test the bluetooth on this phone before selling it?
I have had very good call quality whether using the "phone as a phone", the phones speaker phone, or a blue ant bluetooth headset. I have had poor call quality only when trying to call someone in very low signal area. That has only been once. Otherwise overall clarity and volume have not been an issue, actually phone volume on high is too loud for my ears!
adding to my earlier post. I exchanged my Focus due to an unrelated issue. Both handsets had the same fade out issue with the bluetooth headsets. I've experienced it on every call so I don't think it's signal related. I don't see any volume fluctuation at all when using the handset without the bluetooth headset. I've tried the same three bluetooth headsets on my wife's iPhone 3GS and all work fine. I've also streamed at least a couple of hours of podcasts from the Focus to my headset and the volume is perfectly level. Whatever the issue, it's only related to phone calls. Very frustrating.
I've experienced the same issues. I have an Aliph Jawbone Icon. Before I updated the firmware on it I could barely hear someone on the other end. With the new jawbone firmware I have the ability to control the volume in the headset and only when I have it turned all the way up does it work ok. I do, however, still have trouble when people are talking that when the first start and or finish talking what they say seems to get clipped. Further, the volume seems to fade in and out. Also, if I'm using the AT&T navigator software and have my headset attached it will give me directions through the headset, but the end of every direction gets chopped off. So, the avene or street part of a direction doesn't come through.
I've been following this issue in a few different forums. Today a moderator in the Microsoft Answers forum jumped in and said they were experiencing the same problem and they would escalate the issue.

Can't recommend this phone
I was so excited when I first got my Focus. I thought it was such a huge step forward for MS mobile and actually had some chance at being mainstream. Sure it lacked a few features but there was the hope that MS would update the phone quickly. After all, they seemed to have made such phenomenal progress in getting the phone to market, seemed like fixing a few things and adding a few features would be a no-brainer.
Well, here we are 3 months later (Apple released the first update for iPhone 1.0.1 only one month later) and lots of rumors but nothing substantial on the long-awaited update. We'll see cut/paste but it's not at all clear if they will address anything else.
Here in CA we have a law that says we can't talk on the phone unless it's hands free. For the first time since that law was imposed, I've been regularly breaking it. I can't use a handsfree headset. Even the wired one that comes with the phone is so damn inconvenient that by the time I get it going, the caller is long gone. So, seemingly MAJOR features like BT headsets appear to get no notice at all from MS. I've looked through all the threads and there's nothing from MS. They don't even acknowledge the problem.
Looking at the thread from mcraine, I don't see where MS is going to do anything about this. Also, don't see any indication that it's part of any forthcoming updates.
Too bad. I thought this MS had a chance with this phone but they are blowing it big time. Momentum is gone now. If we have to wait another 3 months to get the browser fixed then the phone is destined to be like the Palm Pre. Good phone but can't keep up with the 'big' boys. This horse jumped out of the gate and was looking really good for the first couple of strides but then completely fell down and they are trying to coax it to get up again.
same issue here as well. mine is only a month old. it is not as noticable when sync'd to the car, but still noticable. and as said before more at the beginning of the call. if there were not issues, it would not be M$

Headphones making volume decrease automatically

Just found a weird issue with my priv, when using my ear buds the volume randomly will go all the way to zero by its self, and when I try to increase the volume it fights me and goes down while I'm trying to turn it up. The brand of headphones is skullcandy and I have 2 pairs that do the same thing. I tried some samsung ones and they didn't have the problem but they sound worse and do not get nearly as loud. I need them loud because when I play my drums I need to hear the music which I can't with the Samsung ones. Anyone else have this issue? I would hate to have to buy new ones as i like the ones I already have.

Interesting...could it be that the connector on your new headphones is different from the samsung one? Also have you tried this pair of headphones on another phone?
It really sounds like the headphones have a button that's stuck on them. I haven't come across this issue with my priv yet.... Have you tried using the headphones with another device and see if they do the same thing?

UPDATE NOT fully solved.
Audio still really distorted and staticy in car (Honda Civic 2016, link to thread). For the JBL FLip3 speaker, here's my fix: In the S8 paired devices list, click the settings icon next to JBL Flip 3. Turn "Call audio" off. Test out music - it should sound clear now. Turn "Call audio" back on, the music still sounds clear.

Hi guys,
I am using an Australian Galaxy S8 SM-G950F, and a JBL Flip 3 portable bluetooth speaker.
I have noticed that when using the S8 with my speaker, the sound is distorted as if the treble frequencies are too high.
I can confirm portable speaker works fine with great sound using my previous phone (Galaxy S5). i paired both phones to the portable speaker and compared them together to see which caused the problem. I tested the exact same song, same quality, same app (Google Play Music) on the S8 and then the S5 and noticed the S8 sounded really bad and the S5 sounded great.
On my galaxy S8 I have not done any EQ or sound effects, I am really not sure why it is like this. I do use volume sync so my S8 volume controls the portable speaker volume.
Anyone else experiencing this? I also have the S8 inbuilt speaker fading/cutting out so I am definitely taking my phone back to get replaced. I just hope my replacement phone will not have the same bluetooth audio issue.

I guess it should be a software issue, due to Bluetooth 5 backward compatibility.

I've got the same speaker at home though that I've yet to pair with this phone so I'll give it a go and compare the s7, s8 and maybe my laptop and see if I notice anything.

Edit: also don't forget that you can adjust and fine tune your equalizer to your liking in settings. Search for "Sound quality and effects". Might want to see if that helps at all.

I haven't adjusted EQ, I'm trying to avoid that - my S5 with flat EQ sounds great on the portable speaker so I'd like the S8 to do the same
Just in the meantime, have you tried to unpair and restart the pairing process? (Just for the sake of absolute clarity, I'm not talking about turning Bluetooth off and then back on again.) Go to your Bluetooth connection menu, click the setting gear icon next the JBL flip 3 and select Unpair and then try again. Worth a shot perhaps?

Just unpaired and re paired now, no improvement
Also turned off media volume sync (so the phone volume and JBL volume are separate), also no improvement
Alright I've had a good play around with the speaker for a bit now and I've tried swapping between my S7, Laptop and this S8+. I played the same song through Spotify on each.
Between s7 and s8 the difference is negligible if not non existent. The s8 and laptop are indistinguishable from each other, as in they're 100% identical to my ears. I was able to instantly swap devices with Spotify as well so I was able to do a lot of fast A-B testing on different parts of the track and there was no distinguishable difference.
The s8 BT sounds fine to my ears. No complaints.
That leads me to consider that;
1. Your phone may in fact be faulty
2. It could be the speaker itself causing issues, or
3. The s5 is actually the one that objectively "worse" or otherwise different. Perhaps you grew accustomed to the sound of the s5 and anything else would sound slightly off by comparison.
Also remember that the JBL flip 3, while nice, isn't a particularly high-end speaker. Its not exactly the best system to get a solid reference from. You might want to try some other BT peripherals such as a home theater system or headset or w/e other BT stuff you have on hand.

Same problem with my Bose QC30
Problem is solved when I reboot the phone, but appears again a few hours later. Very annoying

Are you using a gear or another wearable or smartwatch at the same time you are testing with your s8? If it is..that's your problem rigth there!!
Its a known issue..so we are out of luck!

Actually I do have a wearable paired! Completely forgot. Will delete all and try.
Yea, a wearable will cause treble distortion. Quite annoying actually.

Hi guys, no improvement I'm afraid
First I unpaired my fitness band (Xiaomi mi band 2)
No improvement
Then I uninstalled xiaomi mi fit app (it was watching my notifications)
No improvement
Then I unpaired all my Bluetooth devices (1 car and 1 laptop) so only JBL Flip 3 remains
Still no improvement. I am still hearing this distorted shrill treble sound which I don't hear from S5.
I will try the sound experience of my car via Bluetooth too.

I turned off "Call Audio" in paired device settings for the JBL then tested music
The shrill sound is gone, the music sounds the same as my S5!
I then turned Call Audio back on and music is still sounding good.
I made a phonecall, sounded normal, ended the phonecall and music still sounds good. Hope this lasts!
I am just going to investigate the JBL App because I remember I once switched the button settings there to get Google assistant working. I wonder if that's what caused the problem back then?
EDIT: I also paired my fitness band back and music is still good

Changed the JBL button function to voice assistant, music still good

Thank you so much. The muffly sound was driving me crazy. This is the only thing that worked for me.
Hi everyone, I'm having the exact same issue and unfortunately, none of the solutions here worked for me (tried disabling and re-enabling "call audio", tried unpairing my wearable, even tried unpairing everything else except for my car audio). I also just updated to Android Oreo hoping for a fix, but it didn't solve it...

Just updated to Oreo the other day and that's actually when I started having the problems. I've had this S8 Plus almost a year now, and everything sounded great until the update a few days ago.
The best way I can explain it is the audio, to me, sounds over saturated.
I mainly stream Spotify via bluetooth in my car - JVC head unit, JL in-doors, 1000w Kenwood amp and 2 Alpine SWS D12s. This setup used to sound pretty damn sweet, but post-update, it sounds like garbage and I can't figure it out.
This has been an issue with many newer phones and is related to the newer bluetooth protocols in the 2017+ flagship phones, it seems. I haven't been able to figure out a solution, yet, and I've been trying for over a year. I think that most car stereos and bluetooth speakers are still on the older bluetooth protocols, and that seems to be the underlying disconnect in all of this. If one uses the latest high end bluetooth headphones with support for aptx hd and such the sound is on a whole different level unlike it is paired with my sync based Ford entertainment system or similar.
This is a weird issue that I've also experienced. To me it seems like Samsung prioritises Apt-X bandwidth over the older bluetooth audio codecs, such as SBC - which is what a lot Bluetooth devices still use. In theory SBC is capable of 'sufficiently' good sound quality, but in my experience my S8 just sounds like garbage whenever there's any other than one device connected. I did a Bluetooth HCI log and confirmed that whenever the SBC procotol was being used, my phone would just set the quality to medium despite everything I tried.
What's odd now that is post-Oreo my sound has improved and a new HCI log shows that the majority of the time I'm getting the higher quality mode. Not sure if it's coincidental that I also reset my phone completely after Oreo, or whether Samsung has fixed something... who knows.
My advice is that if you're after good quality audio, either stay away from Bluetooth or buy Apt-X or even LDAC enabled equipment. It works flawlessly with the S8. Great in principle, but not exactly an option if you have an in-built stereo!
